Brianna was just 12 years old when her mother became severely ill, allowing her to know what it was like to care for someone else.Although many members of her family were nurses, taking care of her mum was what influenced her the most and helped her decide to become a nurse.
After she didn't get into UW-Eau Claire's nursing programme the first two times she applied, Brianna began exploring potential careers. She took several business classes, but quickly realised that business wasn't the right choice for her and her real passion was in nursing. She applied for nursing again and finally started the nursing programme in the fall of 2019.
She was just months into her first semester as a nursing major when she hit the next bump in the road.In November 2019, Brianna became extremely ill, with symptoms ranging from difficulty breathing to a high fever and a cough.Eventually, breathing became so difficult that she had to go to the emergency room. Therefore, Brianna could not attend classes for the rest of the fall 2019 semester, focusing instead on regaining her mental and physical health.
While Brianna was still in hospital, she already had connected with fellow nursing majors as well as professors, who worked closely with her to make sure she stayed on her courses. Those connections made all the difference when she was trying to stay on track to graduate despite her illness.
In spring, COVID-19 added additional obstacles (障碍) to her college journey, forcing her to find new ways to manage her time and keep herself motivated. What's worse, she was also laid off from her part-time job when stores were closed, making it more difficult to pay for college.
Despite all those obstacles, Brianna graduated with her nursing classmates in December 2021 and has already planned for what comes after she earned her bachelor's degree in nursing.

2.What does the underlined word “bump” in Paragraph 3 mean ( )

In November 2019, Brianna became extremely ill, with symptoms ranging from difficulty breathing to a high fever and a cough.
3.How did Brianna stick to her nursing programme during illness ( )
C
A.By attending classes with the aid of her classmates.
B.By seeking help from medical experts on the Internet.
C.By communicating with her classmates and professors.

I recently heard a wonderful new parenting phrase which I guess is going to become a regular addition to my vocabulary. The phrase is “benign neglect”, and it refers to leaving one's children free to make their own decisions, control their own time, and generally act like adults.
Jeni Marinucci, who first introduced me to this phrase, described how she treats her children almost as if they were hearty houseplants.“They should be watered plentifully and you should ensure they get plenty of sunshine. But otherwise, just let them be.” From a young age, her children have been making their own hair and other appointments (after she showed them how to do it).Similarly, their time is their own to use as they wish.On a lazy Saturday, it's up to them to figure out a ride to the movies and how to make breakfast and lunch for themselves.
The “benign neglect approach” may sound unacceptable to some readers.Indeed, one commenter on Marinucci's article accused her of not raising her children at all, which seems a bit unkind. It's true that her approach would not work for everyone, but at the very least she recognises what so many parents these days fail to acknowledge—that our beloved children will spend a far greater percentage of their lives as adults than they will as children, so we parents forget a basic requirement of our job if we fail to prepare them for that independence.
“Benign neglect” pays attention to the parental side of parenting, and does not focus entirely on the children. However, miracles will only happen if I hand responsibilities over to my growing children. It's like the old proverb: Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day.Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.
1.What is the first paragraph mainly about ( )
C
A.Making decisions. B.Controlling one's time.
C.A new parenting phrase. D.The author's vocabulary.
I recently heard a wonderful new parenting phrase和
2.How did Marinucci introduce “benign neglect” ( )
A
A.By giving examples. B.By analysing the data.
C.By giving a statement. D.By making comparisons.
From a young age, her children… how to make breakfast and lunch for themselves.
3.What are the parents advised to do in raising kids ( )
B
A.Give them a good education. B.Instruct them to be independent.
C.Meet their reasonable demands. D.Love them unconditionally.
根据倒数第二段中的our beloved children will spend a far greater percentage of their lives as adults than they will as children, so we parents forget a basic requirement of our job if we fail to prepare them for that independence可知,“良性忽视”这种育儿方法提醒了父母们,在抚养孩子时,不要忽略了帮助孩子变得独立。
4.What is the author's attitude to “benign neglect” ( )
D
A.Unclear. B.Intolerant. C.Doubtful. D.Favourable.

结构分析:此处破折号起到解释说明的作用,what引导的从句(宾语从句1)和that引导的从句(宾语从句2)都是作recognises的宾语;在that引导的从句中,than引导比较状语从句,其中省略了与前句相同的部分,即spend their lives,将此处的句子结构补充完整应该是:… will spend a far greater percentage of their lives as adults than they will spend their lives as children。

Four years ago, life rewarded me for all the challenges I embraced in search of self-improvement.My spirits rose when I was selected to be in the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program and I realised that I was going to spend a full year in the United States. Before that moment, living on the other side of the Atlantic had always equated—for a young Moroccan woman who had never set foot abroad—to an anxiety-free atmosphere, welcoming neighbours, and countless opportunities.Fortunately, my host community checked all these boxes.
My host mother went above and beyond to take care of my needs, my teachers were very accommodating with regard to my schoolwork, and I could use my status as an exchange student as an excuse when I needed a favour or an exception. As a YES student, peers from so many diverse backgrounds at school were interested in getting to know me better. With all this unique treatment, I thought to myself, “Hold on a second! Is this what you came for ” Even though my host community was so helpful and welcoming, I realised that I was growing too content with my life.I remembered that I came to the United States for a challenge and that I was determined to strengthen my capacities.
To develop greater perseverance, I joined my host school's swim team, even though I had no prior experience in this sport. For over five months, I walked myself—sometimes reluctantly—to swim practices.During those practices, I did the best I could for three hours each day.
One of my best achievements that year was competing in one of the biggest swim meets of the year. From an outsider's perspective, it might not seem like much, especially since I didn't even win. However, I was never the athletic type, nor have I ever been particularly outstanding in terms of
discipline and commitment.Yet that was exactly what I achieved.I gained discipline and I came to the realisation that I do not need to be perfect at everything that I try for the first time.
Growth can take many forms. In my case, it took the form of a humid ceiling and an overly tight polyester cap.Growth can only be achieved by defying personal limits and breaking free from your comfort zone. This is not always a glamorous process, but it brings you closer to a new and improved version of yourself!

2.( )A.continued B.changed C.settled D.started
B

Today's journalists face modern challenges.Online media platforms are springing up.But the lowly newspaper—and its reporters—are fighting money, tech, and distrust issues.Journalism students and teachers must emphasise new skills to keep their profession alive.
A trustworthy press helps inform people and monitors all levels of government. That is essential to a nation.Yet this useful establishment is growing increasingly unpopular.According to the University of North Carolina (UNC), newsroom jobs across the country are fewer than half what they were 10 years ago.And on many college campuses, the news about the news is bleak too.
Take the Syracuse, New York, student-run newspaper The Daily Orange: It isn't daily anymore. The paper prints just three times each week.Next year, The Diamondback of the University of Maryland will be online only.Half the newspapers that still exist on paper say they don't print as many copies. And UNC's The Daily Tar Heel has cut staff pay and rented cheaper offices to balance its budget.
Considering the problems in journalism, it's surprising that the enrolment (注册人数) in college journalism programmes is up.Managing editor of The Daily Orange Catherine Leffert calls the lay-offs and cutbacks disheartening.“But what keeps me wanting to be a journalist is seeing the effect that The Daily Orange has,” Catherine says.
But journalism educators wonder, “Are we preparing young people for a dying industry ” Years ago, journalism graduates took low-level reporter jobs at newspapers or television stations. That still happens. But today's jobs more often involve digital editing, social media production, and video streaming. Some universities are taking action. The University of Florida offers a sports media programme.Several schools highlight statistics-driven data journalism.
The news isn't all bad.Journalism professor Kathleen Culver says, “When I look at 18- and 20-year-olds in journalism and see what they want to do, I'm optimistic.” Maddy Arrowood is the student editor of The Daily Tar Heel. She says her experience makes her more interested in a journalism career, not less. Her optimism comes from knowing that people still need news. They still need information.

1.____
on
故填on。
2.__________
becoming
3.___________
have flown
根据时间状语So far可知,此处应用现在完成时,主语dozens of women为复数,助动词用have。故填have flown。
4._______
second
5.__________
celebrated
6.____
the
7.________
moving
spend some time doing sth为固定用法,意为“花费时间做某事”,设空处应填动名词。故填moving。
8.___________
Technically
9._____
who
10._________
platforms
