The studio of the Lyon-based artist known as Ememem received an urgent call from an architectural firm close to Place Sathonay last year.Someone was in the process of removing a mosaic (镶嵌图案) he had fixed on the road in front of their offices.By the time he arrived, the man was gone.
Part of that artwork may have disappeared, but many of Ememem's creations remain dotted throughout the city streets… about 350 and counting.
Ememem calls himself “the road's surgeon”.He has written that the works are “a memory notebook of the city”.His works have been drawing more and more attention.“He's a star of local street art,” says Lisa Mambre, the mayor of Lyon.“His works are so noticeable.Everyone you ask seems to know about them.”
Yet while Ememem's works may be visible, he prefers to remain unknown to the public. He refuses to be photographed and doesn't give either phone or face-to-face interviews.Ememem's agent, Guillaume Abou, who has known him for 15 years, can offer some insight.“He's someone with a great urge to give,” says Abou.“He's quite laid-back.”
Whoever he is and whatever his growing popularity brings, one thing is for sure: Ememem will continue to go out at night to beautify Lyon's damaged roads. He sees his interventions not only as a service to the community, but also as a means of bringing beauty to daily life.“The goal,” he writes, “is to spread a touch of poetry under our shoes, to generate a moment of amazement, a smile.”

Can you define great art On the one hand, we can all see that great art is old art which is called great. But how do we know which art of our own times is great, and which will be forgotten And who decides
These are important questions, for the great art of the past often was not considered great during its own time. When Shakespeare and Charles Dickens were writing, for example, most critics considered them as hack (平庸的) writers with little or no literary ability.Similarly, Van Gogh and many of the other impressionist painters of the late nineteenth century were not allowed to participate in events involving what were thought to be the “real” painters of the time, and often they were very poor.Yet today their paintings often sell for millions of dollars, while those so-called “real” painters are now barely remembered.
So what makes great art Can, for example, rock music be great art Music videos Cartoons and comics Those who call themselves critics of the fine arts often have been the last to recognize great art in the past, and we can probably expect this to be the situation today.
Critics often don't recognize great art because they tend to be prejudiced against what is popular. Popular works, whether they are novels, movies, or comics, are usually considered to be produced for the sake of money only, and not for the sake of art.
But popularity, it seems to me, is one of the three signs that a present-day work of art may come to be thought of as great. The other two are that it is groundbreaking, and that it is inherently (固有地) beautiful.
Many works have one or even two of these qualities of being popular, unusual, and beautiful. But having all the three often will mean that a work of art will someday be seen to be great, though it may take a good spoonful of time, such as a century or two, to know for sure.
1.What is the purpose of the first paragraph ( )
D
A.To explain what kind of art will become popular.
B.To introduce some real painters to the readers.
C.To introduce the writer's confusion about art.
D.To lead into the following points by arousing the readers' curiosity.
2.What does the author want to prove by using the examples of Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Van
Gogh ( )
D
A.These masters' works have some shortcomings.
B.These masters wouldn't have been so successful without the critics.
C.Truly beautiful works of art are never understood when first created.
D.Great masters are often not acknowledged while they were alive.
These are important questions, for the great art of the past often was not considered great during its own time.
3.According to the passage, what do critics think of popular works ( )
B
A.They will be out of date quickly.
B.They are created for profit rather than for art.
C.They might be presented in a popular form.
D.They are thought valuable because of their low sale price.
Popular works, whether they are novels, movies, or comics, are usually considered to be produced for the sake of money only, and not for the sake of art.
4.What can be inferred from the last three paragraphs ( )
C
A.Critics have changed their attitudes to great works.
B.Critics' comments determine great art works.
C.The work of art itself determines its greatness.
D.Popular works today must become great art works someday.

To say that Spanish painter Pablo Picasso was a leader in Western art in the 20th century is to repeat an accepted fact, according to the Time magazine.“No painter before him had enjoyed such a large following in his own lifetime.”
Born on Oct 25, 1881, Picasso had created more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures and other pieces of art by the time he died at 91.That's a long time to paint! The result is not only a lot of art, but a lot of different phases in Picasso's works. On its website, Christie's auction (拍卖) house lists eight different periods in the course of his painting career.
Over a century ago, the painter once said that, “Every act of creation is first an act of destruction.” So the eight periods are all very different in their choice of subjects and yet unmistakably drawn by Picasso's hands. The Financial Express called his style unusual. As his style changed over time, it became more simplistic.A common joke is that Picasso forgot how to paint. After all, he was classically trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona.
Now he is best known for leading an artistic movement known as “Cubism (立体派)”.It used geometric shapes to create human and animal figures. With this method, Picasso tried to show his figures from multiple perspectives (视角) in two-dimensional space. For example, a person's left eye may be shown from straight ahead while his right eye and nose are shown from the side. The result is strange and beautiful, frightening and funny.
Picasso often said that he admired primitive art and drawings made by youngsters.“When I was the age I could draw like Raphael, but it took me a lifetime to learn to draw like them,” he said.Maybe that's why Picasso is still so popular. We look at his works and think, “Maybe I could do that!”

The term modern art sounds like it means art that is popular at the moment, but in fact, modern art is a style that originated over 150 years ago, and includes artists that by now have attained classic status, such as Picasso, Matisse, and Gauguin. And what's even more ironic (讽刺的) is that the movement they pioneered, considered revolutionary at the time, was inspired largely by an object of a traditional and ancient design.
As far back as the Renaissance, the primary European art movements emphasized conventional representation and adherence (遵循) to classical forms. But that began to change in the late 19th century as artists like Van Gogh and Cézanne expanded the boundaries of painting.Soon, a movement arose that sought to create an entirely new style of art, and one way of doing so was to look beyond Western civilization.
Henri Matisse showed his friend Picasso a mask he had acquired made by the Dan tribe of the Ivory Coast. The mask awoke Picasso's curiosity, leading him to visit the Trocadéro Ethnographic Museum in Paris in 1907.The visit was eye-opening for Picasso, who declared that African masks were what painting was all about. At this time, Picasso had been working on a painting of five naked women in a style that would later come to be known as Cubism. And while three of these ladies show facial features found in ancient Iberian art, a nod to Picasso's Spanish heritage, the faces of the two on the right closely resemble African masks.Created in 1907 after hundreds of sketches and studies, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon has been considered the first truly 20th century masterpiece, breaking with many previously held notions in art.
Inspiration from ancient cultures started one of the most revolutionary movements in art history, but were these artists playing the role of explorers or conquerors, stealing ideas and profiting from cultures they considered primitive Questions like this deserve scrutiny (审视), as artists continue to redefine standards.Perhaps not too long from now, the bold innovations (革新) of modern art will be overturned by a new set of pioneers drawing inspiration from another unlikely source.

D
A.When artists turned to nature for inspiration. B.When artists looked beyond Western civilization.
C.When artists began to emphasize self-expression. D.When artists expanded the boundaries of painting.
As far back as the Renaissance… But that began to change in the late 19th century as artists like Van Gogh and Cézanne expanded the boundaries of painting.

B
A.Artistic creation involves imitation and innovation.
B.The pioneering role of modern artists is questionable.

D
A.A Glimpse Into Modern European Art B.The Pioneering Figures of Modern Art
C.Why We Should Redefine Modern Art D.How Ancient Art Influenced Modern Art

Contrary to popular opinion, the scientific quest for knowledge is not a predictable and well-defined process. To make new discoveries, researchers need the freedom to be creative, fail, and learn by chance. There is the romantic idea of the scientist who has a eureka moment (突发灵感的一刻) and suddenly arrives at new insights. Another impression is that research only involves formal steps.Neither of those ideas is correct.
“Science and art are two different ways to make something comprehensible or imaginable,” says Biochemistry Professor Dolf Weijers.“From the outside, the research process looks very formal and the artistic process looks somewhat messy. But the scientific process can also unfold in an unpredictable way. Creative and associative thinking is very important for scientists to gain insight and make connections.”
There is an intersection between science and art. This is why Wageningen scientists look to artists for inspiration and exchange ideas about how to amplify creative freedom. Weijers and his colleague Joris Sprakel, together with other scientists and artists, have designed a plan to learn from each other and to exchange ideas. One example is the recent and special project in which they measured the forces that act on plant cells. A molecular (分子的) sensor was used to visualize the different forces. They revealed the results in colourful images, each representing a different force.
What science and art also have in common is that they are topics of discussion in society. There are people who say that they do not value art and people who mistrust science.“It often creates the wrong impression because only the results of scientific studies are presented, and people do not have any insight into the artistic process leading to discovery. As a scientist you are criticized if you say that something is different a few years later. Then you are viewed as unreliable. But what is often poorly understood is that there are no final results in science, ” says Weijers.

Mariana Bechtel isn't exactly someone who avoids stress.Throughout her career, she has pursued high-pressure management jobs.“I'm the hard core,” says the 44-year-old wife and mother of two.“I wanted to be on top at work, and I wanted to be a great mum—one who could attend baseball games, drive and help with homework even after an hour-long commute (上下班路程) on workdays, more often than not, with a 5 am marathon-training run.”
However, after months of losing sleep, dropping weight and feeling pushed to lose her mind, Mariana Bechtel decided she had to address her stress and turn it to her advantage. The new job she recently switched to still has its share of pressure, but with more support from her boss and more flexibility in her schedule, she says she feels great.
Contrary to popular belief, stress doesn't have to be a soul-sucking, health-damaging force. But few people know how to transform their stress into the positive kind that helps them reach their goals.
A recent study confirms that gaining control over job demands, doing work with meaning and purpose and enjoying support and encouragement from co-workers are all linked to beneficial stress.Simply changing attitudes and expectations about stress—through coaching, training or peer-support groups—can also develop the constructive kind of stress.
“Stress is paradoxical,” says Alia Crum, a research scholar.“On the one hand, it can be the thing that hurts us most. On the other, it's fundamental to psychological and physical growth. The attitude that we view and approach stress will shift the outcome.”
