Picture a wasteland of old computer monitors and TVs, stretching as far as the eye can see. Imagine towers of boxes, all of them filled with broken glass and old electronic devices.
What’s behind the tech trash pile? About ten years ago, major advances were made in computer and television technology. The new electronic products are built with materials that are difficult to recycle. In addition, the new products have decreased the demand for recycled parts from the old monitors and screens.
Experts say there are ways to safely and responsibly solve the tech trash problem. Barbara Kyle is the national leader of the Electronic TakeBack Organization. The organization encourages people to donate their old electronic products to charities or neighbors who will use them. “It’s better for the planet if we keep using an electronic product as long as it keeps working,” Kyle said. “But many times, we stop using it even though it still works because we got a newer product.”
Students can also be a part of the solution. Schools can set up recycling projects to collect used electronic products. They can also work with responsible electronic recyclers to handle their old products. Many electronic factories also provide a return program where consumers can send back the products that they no longer use. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 25 states now have laws that deal with the disposal and recycling of electronic products. Most of these laws require them to pay for the collection and recycling at the end of a product’s life.
Through these various programs and organizations, consumers can reduce tech trash and become part of the solution. When you’re finished with something, bring it for recycling right away because there’s a chance it might be able to be reused. That’s the best conservation of resources.

Many people say they cannot start their day without first having a cup of coffee or tea. People say these drinks help them think clearly and feel more awake. This is because of caffeine, a substance found in some plants. It helps to give the start to the nervous system. Now a new report says it may also improve long-term memory.
Michael Yassa is a neurobiology professor at the University of California, Irvine. He and other researchers wanted to know if caffeine could improve what they called memory consolidation (记忆巩固). They asked a group of individuals to learn something new, and then the same people were given caffeine—the active ingredient in coffee, tea and chocolate.
They worked with a group of 160 people who were caffeine free. On the first day, all the subjects were shown pictures of everyday objects. They were asked to tell whether the pictures could be found inside the house or outdoors. Some of the subjects were then given a caffeine pill; the others were given a pill containing no caffeine. On the second day, all of the subjects were asked to look at more pictures. Some of the images were exactly the ones they had seen 24 hours early. But other images were quite different. The participants(参与者) had to decide whether the images they saw were the same as or different from the ones on the first day.
Professor Yassa says their answers help to show the effects of caffeine on memory. He says those who took the caffeine pills had a ten to twelve percent increase in their ability to remember the objects. The amount of caffeine used in the study was similar to one cup of strong coffee. Professor Yassa says pills with a little more caffeine also increased memory, but resulted in some participants appearing more nervous.

写作一
As is shown in the picture, the talented person can’t fly or move as he wishes because his foot is tied to the heavy stone marked with Laziness. It is clear that laziness has a negative effect on his achievement however talented he is. From this we can easily draw a conclusion that diligence and talent act as two strong supportive wings that help us fly high and achieve our dreams. In any case we should keep it in mind that working hard is the base for realizing our dreams.

An English-speaking contest held in our school
An English-speaking contest was held in our school on the morning of October 20.
Eighteen students from three grades participated in the contest. The contest, which lasted two hours, consisted of two parts: reciting and telling stories. All the participants performed wonderfully because they had made adequate preparations before the contest. Three professors from a university acted as judges. The judges, who thought highly of the students’ English, gave a mark to the contestants’ performance on the spot. In the end three students won first prizes. And each of them was awarded a laptop as the prize.
This competition not only showed our students’ English level, but also aroused our students’ interest in learning English.
