Last year was the first vacation my wife Emma and I had taken in a few years. That was largely because we were creatures of habits and getting out of our routine was not comfortable for us. Therefore, packing up and traveling somewhere was not necessarily “relaxing”. However, after our vacation to California last year I realized that this is something I need to do every year.
Vacations allow me to slow my mind. By slowing my mind I am able to be more productive. Before we set out on our vacations I always tell myself that I do not have to work and I put no pressure on myself to do so, but I often get several good ideas that I just have to write down. By slowing my mind I can concentrate a lot better. In the past, my mind was often wandering when I was reading and would have to backtrack to absorb what I read.
I have read several articles and books on the topic of productivity and most say that concentrated periods of work and effort are far more effective than long drawn-out periods. This is because your brain is not able to focus for large periods of time, especially with a lot of distractions. By forcing yourself to work in shorter periods of time your brain will have more energy, and therefore be sharper; and you can eliminate a lot of distractions because you can tell yourself that you will have plenty of time for those later.
So if you want to improve your productivity, take a vacation from time to time. It really works!
39. The author and his wife seldom took vacations in the past mainly because _______.
A. they couldn’t afford a vacation
B. both of them had a very busy schedule
C. they felt traveling was tiring and not relaxing
D. they didn’t want to break their daily routine
40. The second paragraph mainly tells us _______.
A. vacations have brought many benefits to the author
B. the author couldn’t focus on anything in the past
C. how to improve your working productivity
D. why the author can concentrate a lot better now
41. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Remember. B. Remove.
C. Stand. D. Find.
42. What does the author mainly want to show by writing the text?
A. It’s very important to relax.
B. It’s important to be more productive.
C. We should break our habits and try new things.
D. Employers shouldn’t keep employees working all the time.

You may be familiar with massive open online courses (MOOCs) delivered by professors. But a new open course provider has a slightly different approach—its lecturers are all students. Its name is One-man University. It offers a wide range of interesting teaching programs that convey knowledge in an accessible way.
Students teaching students may sound absurd, but this mechanism has been welcomed by One-man University’s tens of thousands of followers. They believe that the core competitiveness of One-man University comes from allowing student lecturers to inspire other students to learn. Besides, student lecturers deliver lectures in a way that may be more understandable than professors in universities. “One-man University encourages participants to learn things through their own efforts. On the way, they’ll find they have infinite possibilities,” says Tong Zhe, 26, founder of One-man University.
If students are interested in a course of One-man University, they can either take offline classes or watch online course videos for free. But the former requires registration. According to Tong, the knowledge content of a course provided by One-man University is equal to that of a university course in one semester. “Each course takes 16 hours to complete,” says Tong. “It is divided into several sessions, with each session taking about 20 minutes to cover one knowledge point.”
As for students who want to share knowledge with others, One-man University offers them a stage. “We select lecturers based on the following two criteria: first, they should be academically qualified. Second, they need to deliver understandable lectures,” says Tong. To be more specific, if someone wants to teach mathematics at One-man University, their audition (试讲) lectures must be approved by a group of students consisting of both mathematics majors and non-mathematics majors invited by Tong. “As long as we stick to our standards, we will attract more students and qualified lecturers. There’s a long way to go for One-man University,” he says.
43. One-man University is different from MOOCs in that _______.
A. it can provide free online classes
B. it offers many interesting programs
C. it admits no more than 10,000 students
D. it adopts the approach of students giving lessons
44. Which of the following is true?
A. Students can register to take online courses of One-man University.
B. One-man University provides more courses than most universities.
C. One-man University’s teaching method makes courses easier to understand.
D. Many people think that One-man University’s idea is unreasonable.
45. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. It is difficult for One-man University to find a qualified maths teacher.
B. Tong Zhe takes a positive attitude to the future of One-man University.
C. Any student is allowed to deliver lectures in One-man University.
D. There is an urgent need for more qualified lecturers in One-man University.
46. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Advantages of online education
B. Online education takes on a fresh look
C. One-man University’s founder—Tong Zhe

Studies say the chemical may be partly to blame for the widespread loss of honeybees in the United States.
The insects are important to farmers. Yet about 30 percent of honeybees in the United States and other areas have died in recent years. Dennis VanEngelsdorp is a researcher at the University of Maryland. He wants to learn why so many bees have died.
His research team examined the pollen grain (花粉粒) that honeybees carried to their homes. They found that the pollen contained high levels of 35 different pesticides, chemicals used to protect plants. They also found that bees eating some fungicides (杀真菌剂) became infected with a deadly micro-organism called Nosema. Yet fungicides are used, and have been used, pretty widely, for centuries, for protection of plants from plant disease. Fungicides are necessary to use for agricultural purposes in the United States.
Mike Leggett studies pesticide for the pest management industry group—CropLife America. He says that many of the pesticides found in the pollen examined by Dennis VanEngelsdorp actually protect bees from Nosema.
Maryland farmer and beekeeper Keith Ohlinger has watched many of his bees die. Mr Ohlinger does not feel sure that pesticides are part of the problem.
“I feel that it is a compilation (汇集) of a lot of little things. I don’t feel that there is probably one smoking gun. But some people feel that it is just one thing. Maybe I’m just not educated enough, I don’t know, but my view is that if you can take a bath in it, it’s probably safe.”
Honeybees are important to agriculture. This makes the search for an answer to their death especially urgent for Mr VanEngelsdorp’s team. As he knows, one in every three bites of food we eat is somehow pollinated (授粉) by honeybees.
47. We can learn from the text that _______.
A. many people haven’t realized the importance of honeybees
B. there is a growing population of honeybees in America
C. honeybees are in danger and need to be protected well
D. the plant disease is to blame for the loss of honeybees
48. We can learn that Dennis VanEngelsdorp’s research team _______.
A. found that pesticides did great harm to plants
B. hasn’t found the exact answer to honeybees’ death
C. believed that fungicides shouldn’t be used for agriculture
D. found that Nosema had nothing to do with honeybees’ death
49. In Keith Ohlinger’s opinion, _______.
A. it is not just one thing that has resulted in honeybees’ death
B. pesticides are safe and can protect honeybees from diseases
C. chemicals used to fight plant diseases are harming honeybees
D. one third of food we eat is pollinated by honeybees
50. In which section of the newspaper might the text appear?
A. Sports. B. Health. C. Animals. D. Agriculture.

Long before I had a chance to become acquainted with animals other than cats and dogs, I fell in love with Isaac Bashevis Singer’s story of Zlateh the Goat. In the story, the beloved goat no longer gave milk. With Hanukkah (光明节) approaching and money tight, Reuven decided to sacrifice her. He sent his oldest son, Aaron, to sell Zlateh to the butcher (屠夫).
The goat and her human companion were caught in a blizzard and quickly lost their way. They stumbled across a haystack. Aaron dug out a makeshift (临时的) cave, and he and Zlateh snuggled (依偎) together inside for the next three days. Because of Zlateh’s warmth and milk, Aaron survived the storm. The grateful family never again spoke of selling Zlateh.
The story is full of love and warmth. When I was a school librarian, I frequently recommended it to children and their teachers.
Years later I had goats of my own, the angoras (安哥拉山羊) whose hair could be spun (纺织) into mohair. They were friendly and lovely. When I was with them, I always thought of Zlateh.
In October 2002, Noel Osborne, an Australian farmer, was also kept alive by his goat. In October, a cow butted (以头抵撞) him into a manure pile (粪堆) where he lay helplessly, with his hip broken. The frequently-changed weather of late spring on the southern hemisphere brought rain storms, hot days, and cold nights.
The goat discovered him on the first evening. Osborne found a bottle and was able to put the milk into it. Though the goat wandered off during the day, she returned to his side every night, snuggling against him for warmth and feeding him her milk. Osborne’s dog, Mandy, also brought him bones and comfort, but it was the goat’s milk that actually brought him through.
Five days later, his friends stopped by the remote farm to pick up a goat. They found Osborne, still in the manure pile, and called an ambulance.
Maybe Oscar Wilde was right, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates Life.”
51. We can learn from the passage that ______.
A. the writer never liked animals before
B. the writer fell in love with Isaac Bashevis

C. his son was opposed to killing the goat
D. he owed deep gratitude to the goat
53. The underlined word “blizzard” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. flood B. tornado C. snowstorm D. earthquake
54. What do you think Noel Osborne would do after he got back home?
A. He would give his dog more bones.
B. He would invite his friends to dinner.
C. He would take better care of his goat.
D. He would sell his dog to the butcher.
55. Which of the following does the writer most probably agree with?

From the picture we can learn that lots of bad behaviors still exist in our school. For example, some students often spit in public. Some students don’t wait in line when they are in the dining room. What is worse, rubbish and plastic bags can be seen everywhere in our schoolyard, which makes us feel uncomfortable. In my opinion, we should behave well and say goodbye to all these bad behaviors and make efforts to build a clean and harmonious school.
