If you’re a parent, you will know how busy we are. Our brains never stop thinking about what needs to be done next. So many times while I was in the middle of a task, my daughter Elle would come running towards me with a smile on her face and say, “Mom, come and play.” Most of the time I replied, “Sorry, Elle, I have to make dinner / feed your brother / wash the dishes.”
I felt really guilty when I repulsed her invitation and I defended it by making myself believe that I had to get dinner on the table or that the task really needed to be done right now. Then I read this, “When we are too busy doing things to accept our child’s invitation to play, we miss out on the beauty and connection that those moments can offer us.” And I was reminded that not only was I missing out on playing with my daughter, I was missing out on connecting and bonding with her, and most importantly, I was missing out on my daughter’s life.
And so, this week I’m practicing slowing down and stopping. Several times this week, when Elle asked me to play with her while I was in the middle of a task, I stopped what I was doing and let her hold my hand as she guided me away from my task to her play area. I was present the whole three minutes of us playing together, after which she decided to move on to something else and I was able to return to my task.
This practice of slowing down and stopping is teaching me not to get too caught up with the daily work. There will always be more dishes that need to be washed or another meal to prepare. This moment with my family is a blessing and I shouldn’t let it go.

Robert Louis Stevenson was born on November 13th, 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a Scottish novelist, essayist, and poet.
In April 1871, Robert Louis Stevenson told his father he wanted to pursue the life of a writer. His father was not all that surprised, as Stevenson had written from his childhood. As a prolific (多产的) writer who left behind a large collection of essays, diaries, letters and short stories, he is best remembered for Treasure Island, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Story of a Lie and A Child’s Garden of Verses.
Stevenson was an only child, who was described as strange-looking and eccentric (古怪的), and spent a good deal of his early childhood in bed as he was fragile. Young Stevenson spent so much time in bed that his nurse encouraged him to read from an early age, and soon he began to write his own stories and read them to her. No doubt in remembrance of those years spent under the covers, he wrote A Child’s Garden of Verses in 1885 and dedicated (献给) it to his nurse who had been his faithful companion.
Stevenson attended the University of Edinburgh and was determined to follow in his father’s footsteps: a civil engineer and designer of light houses, an occupation that his fragile health would not allow. Ill much of the time, he traveled to the south of France and the South Seas, writing the entire time. While traveling in France, he met his wife, an American artist Fanny Osbourn and the two fell in immediate love.
Finding the winters of New York and England unsuitable for fragile Stevenson, the two sailed back to the island of Samoa which Stevenson had visited previously, and was to be their new home. Robert Louis Stevenson died on December 3rd, 1894 with his beloved Fanny by his side.
43. When Robert Louis Stevenson told his father that he wanted to be a writer, his father _____.
A. felt quite surprised B. thought it was something natural
C. didn’t support him D. had little confidence in him
44. From the third paragraph, we can learn that Robert Louis Stevenson was _____ to his nurse.
A. grateful B. considerate C. sympathetic D. unfriendly
45. We can learn from the text that _____.
A. Stevenson’s father was a civil engineer and designer of light houses
B. Stevenson spent most of his time traveling around the world
C. Stevenson wrote A Child’s Garden of Verses while traveling in France
D. Stevenson first met his wife Fanny on the island of Samoa
46. Which of the following best describes Robert Louis Stevenson?
A. Talented and productive. B. Weak and sensitive.
C. Popular and unhappy. D. Emotional and strange.

If astronauts have any plans to stay on the moon for extended periods of time, they will have to support themselves. One of the most important steps toward achieving that will be growing their own food. That is the reason NASA scientists recently announced plans to grow vegetables where no man has grown before. If they are successful, it will be the first time humans have ever brought life to another planet.
This, of course, will not be a conventional garden with astronauts physically planting seeds on the rocky surface and hoping for the best. Instead, the scientists will place the seeds on a filter (过滤器) filled with nutrients and put them inside a lunar plant growth room that will protect them against solar radiation. Once the garden lands on the moon, enough water will be added to ensure the seeds can grow well. There will also be enough air trapped in to allow for 5-10 days of growth.
So what treats are in store for the astronauts if the experiment works? Turnips (大头菜), basil (罗勒) and arabidopsis, a little white flowering plant that is similar to cress (水芹). Robert Bowman, a senior scientist who is working with the NASA Ames Research Center on this project, says these were selected because they are important crop plants. Additionally, basil has been grown successfully many times on the International Space Station (ISS). This gives researchers hope that it might grow on the moon as well.
Dr. Robert Bowman described how plants constantly have to cope with bad environments and threats, “Simply knowing how plants deal with stress on the moon can really tell us a lot about how they deal with stress right here on Earth.” We know how plants are affected by conditions like drought – by exposing them to entirely new factors, we can advance our understanding of how they fun_ction.
47. We can learn from the second paragraph that _____.
A. seeds don’t need air or water to grow on the moon
B. a filter filled with nutrients will protect seeds against radiation
C. astronauts will plant seeds on the lunar surface to get their food
D. growing a vegetable garden on the moon is different from on the earth
48. According to Robert Bowman, turnips, basil and arabidopsis are chosen to grow on the moon because _____.
A. they are most suitable to grow in space
B. they have been tested on the moon
C. they are important crop plants
D. they have some similarities
49. It can be inferred from the text that _____.
A. the project can help us learn about how to grow plants in bad climates on Earth
B. plants that can be grown successfully on the ISS can also grow on the moon
C. the moon has a pleasant climate which is very suitable for plants to grow
D. it will be the first time humans have sent some plants and animals to the moon
50. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. NASA plans to grow plants on the moon
B. NASA has found new life forms on the moon
C. Human beings will soon settle on the moon
D. Astronauts are testing how plants can survive radiation

When two teenagers in Oakville, Ontario learned that many First Nations children in northern Ontario communities had no access to books, the girls did more than empathize (同情). Emma Mogus and Julia Mogus decided to take action to help. Inspired by Bartleman who had sponsored Aboriginal youth, the sisters set out to collect books for the remotest communities of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN).
They started with their own money, buying used books that were in good condition from secondhand stores and garage sales. They had a goal: 1,000 books for northern children. Media attention to their mission (任务) brought a flood of donations. They told the National Post in July 2012: “They’re our brothers and sisters up north and they deserve the opportunities to receive education that we already have. We hope to fill up their public libraries.”
With hundreds, then thousands of books piled up, the sisters needed a place to store them and then needed a way to ship them. The local Hopedale Mall offered to provide the place. So did Panago Pizza. It offered to help with shipping costs. Then the Labourers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) offered to make arrangements for truck transportation to Wasaya Airways in Thunder Bay.
Wasaya Airways, the air lifeline to remote NAN communities, offered a 90 percent discount on the shipping. Fundraising brought in those dollars, and 5,000 books winged their way to the northern Ontario communities.
The Mogus sisters did not rest on their laurels (桂冠). By the time they visited Fort Severn First Nation in May 2013, Wawatay News reported they had sent more than 18,000 books to remote NAN communities. Along with the books they also sent warm winter clothing, craft supplies and so on.
They were teens with a dream, and they worked hard to make it come true. Next time you feel too powerless to change the world, just think about Emma Mogus and Julia Mogus. Their efforts are rippling (荡起涟漪) outward in the big pond we all swim in. If you want to read more about the similar stories, you’re welcome to visit my blog at www.dreamclimber.sina.com.

53. What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A. The government organized the mission of the donation.

The point is who first says sorry is actually about keeping or losing face. As a matter of fact, those who first make an apology may not lose face. Instead, by doing this, they can solve the conflict and maintain the friendship. Thus, in a way, saving your own face isn’t as important as keeping a harmonious relationship. So if you are in such cases, say sorry first!

Dear Li Hua,
Thank you for your letter. I’d like to share my experience with you about my study and life in London.
On arriving in London, I chose to live in a host family, in which three students from other countries had lived. Living together, we learned more about different customs and traditions. What’s more, to know more about British customs and culture, I had to read more books and found a lot of information about Britain. To adjust to the life in London quickly, I took an active part in all kinds of after-class activities and joined a few clubs. Besides, I made three friends, who gave me a lot of help and encouragement. During this period, my English was improved a lot and this experience also made my life colourful.
Would you like to write to me about your recent study and life? Looking forward to your letter.
Yours,
Wang Lin
