Donald was shaken by thunder on the bed before he could count “one thousand one”. Then he heard the smoke alarm go off. He went downstairs quickly to investigate. When he opened the door to the basement (地下室), flames exploded out.
Donald fled (逃) back upstairs to call 911 but the phone didn’t work. When he tried to go downstairs, he was stopped by a wall of flames. He had to use a towel to cover his mouth. His house was three miles off the main road and so well hidden by trees that Donald knew calling for help would be useless. Actually, he didn’t even try to do that.
About one mile away lived Donald’s closest neighbor, Jeremie. When he heard some sounds, Jeremie jumped out of bed, holding a phone and a flashlight, and went towards the noise. He dialed 911 the instant he saw the flames. When he came close to the house, Jeremie knew he’d better wait until rescuers came. But he didn’t want Donald to die in the fire.
Without hesitation (犹豫), he rushed into the house. He shouted, “Donald, where are you?” Then he had to run outside to catch his breath. After one more attempt (尝试), he gave up and circled around back. He saw Donald on the second-floor balcony, but there was no way to get to him. Suddenly, he noticed a ladder. He dragged it over to the balcony and pulled Donald down just when the second floor fell down.
Within the year, Donald built a new two-story wood house at the site of the fire. Jeremie and Donald don’t run into each other regularly, but Donald knows that if he ever needs help, Jeremie will be there.

Like many grandparents, Irving Winson regularly looks after his grandchildren. So when the Red Cross put on a special child-centered course for older carers, he couldn’t wait to apply for (申请) it.
Irving, who has six grandchildren aged under 12, was just one of many grandparents attending the busy first aid session in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire. He said, “My wife is a nurse, so I’ve always relied on her to act in an emergency. But there are occasions when she’s out and I’m left looking after the kids by myself. Having some first aid skills means I’ll know what to do if anything bad happens.”
The everyday first aid course covered basic skills such as dealing with burns, fractures (骨折) and bleeding injuries. It also covered what to do if a child or baby started choking. Irving said, “Recently, my youngest grandson, who’s just 12 months old, swallowed a small part of a toy. Luckily, he didn’t choke and was still able to breathe, but he couldn’t eat and had a strange cough for a while. Finally, the doctors removed it. However, it made me think ‘what if that had happened when I was looking after him and he had started to choke?’ Before taking this course I wouldn’t have known what to do.”
Jo Riches, a first aid trainer, said, “We felt it was important to hold a course specifically for grandparents as more and more are responsible for caring for their grandchildren while parents return to work.” Irving said, “I took a first aid course many years ago, but the techniques have changed over the years. This one was so easy and made it simple to master the key skills. I feel I could respond to an emergency now if I have to.”

She has wiped your nose, packed countless lunches, driven you to piano lessons, cleaned your favorite jeans, seen you through college and given you sound advice more times than you can count. On Mother’s Day — the one day a year that is truly about “mom”, don’t take her out to a crowded, noisy and overpriced restaurant. Show your mom that you really put some thought into her special day and host brunch (早午餐) in her honor.
There’s no need for your hands to start sweating (出汗) from fear of standing near a hot stove, your face covered in flour and smoke alarms going off in the distance. Brunch can be as easy as you’d like it to be.
The beauty of brunch is that you can offer both breakfast and lunch selections (可供挑选的东西), so there’s usually something for everyone. Popular brunch selections include coffee cakes or quick bread such as banana bread. A lovely fruit salad can quickly be made by mixing together two or more of the following: strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe (甜瓜), watermelon, and mango.
Food is obviously the major part of brunch, but there are nice decorative things you can add to help make the occasion more memorable. Decorate the room or table with photos of mom with her kids or grandkids. A simple, fresh bunch of flowers will liven up (使活跃) any table and it will also make a great gift for mom as a memento of her wonderful brunch.

Kids may have a gift for predicting (预测) future technology, according to a new study from international research consultancy (咨询) firm Latitude. The findings are a result of asking kids across the world to give the answer to this question: “What would you like your computer or the Internet to do which it can’t do right now?”
“Across a variety of creative exercises, kids from all over the world have proven, time and again, that they think in unusual ways about how technology could improve their learning, play and interactions (互动) with the people and things around them — and the ways that technology might help us solve the big global problems we all face,” said Steve Mushkin, founder and president of Latitude.
Many kids imagined technologies with more intuitive (直觉的) modes of input and human-level interactions, such as verbal and gestural responses. Kids are asking for computers to look, feel, sound, act, and interact more like humans. In many cases, it’s not enough to have a machine that simply completes a task for them. Kids today have a strong natural skill in independent learning, creation and artistic efforts, and they’re looking for technologies that can teach them and really attract them in new ways.
One-third of kids imagined technologies that would empower (给某人做某事的权力) them by developing adult skills, such as speaking a different language or learning how to cook. Some participants moved beyond personal development, dreaming of technologies that could improve positive social connections or influence behaviors tied to sustainability (持续性).
The lines between “online” and “offline” and “virtual” and “real” distinctions (差别) are also disappearing, the report notes.
“Kids naturally think about a future in which traditionally “online” interactions make their way into the physical world,” Mushkin said.

A. meet many problems in using new technology
B. lack enough exercise because of the Internet
C. are concerned with both themselves and the world
D. try to avoid problems by staying online
53. Kids hope that computers in the future .
A. can predict their future life B. will take the place of teachers
C. can do all the things for humans
D. will be human-like and more intelligent
54. We can infer from the text that .
A. most kids prefer the real world
B. adults are unsatisfied with kids’ behavior
C. some kids hope to learn grown-ups’ skills
D. 30% of kids can do some kind of cooking
55. What would be the best title for the text?

D. How to help kids use new technology
第三部分 写作 (共两节,满分35分)
第一节 任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
Telephone, television, radio, telegraph and the Internet all help people communicate with each other. As a result, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, within seconds, people can know the results of an election in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set. News of a disaster such as an earthquake or a flood can bring help from distant countries within hours. Help is on the way. Because of modern technology like the satellites that travel around the world, information travels fast.
How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course this does not mean that the world is actually physically smaller. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago, communication between the continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even months to cross the ocean. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach America. This time difference influenced people’s actions. For example, one battle, or fight, in the War of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided. A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England, but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During these six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives after a peace agreement had been signed. In the past, communication took much more time than it does now.

Examples
(in the past)
Two centuries ago, (63) between the continents took a long time.
The news of peace agreement made in (64) took six weeks to reach America.
Conclusion

One possible version:
A discussion was carried out in our class on whether middle school students should go to school by e-bike.
Some of us think riding e-bikes is convenient and can save much time and strength on the way to school. Besides, compared to common bikes, e-bikes have strong locks and sharp alarms, so they can’t be easily stolen.
Others think the used batteries from e-bikes lead to the environmental pollution. Besides, unlike common bikes, e-bikes have to be charged, and as a result energy is wasted. Lastly, we will be in danger if we ride e-bikes too fast.
In my view, if time permits, it is better to ride common bikes instead of e-bikes because it is obvious that we can get more daily exercise by cycling.
