My mom just bought me a new bike. Since my cousin Mary didn’t have a bike with her, she walked next to me. I thought that Mary would jump on the luggage carrier (行李架) over the back tire when I was riding. Mom knew exactly what I was thinking. “Don’t ride the bike with Mary on the back,” she said. “It’s too dangerous. You could kill yourself. Take turns.”
I nodded, but I was thinking I could handle this. A few minutes later, I turned right to a wide road. “Jump on the back,” I told Mary. I rode fast, laughing as the wind blew through our hair. It was exciting, until the handlebar (车把) started shaking. The front tire dropped into a drain (下水道) and I fell off the bike, still holding the handlebar.
My face, hands, and knees crashed into the pavement. The pain in my mouth was unbearable, and I tasted blood. I turned towards Mary who was on the ground, holding her knee and crying. Seconds later, it seemed that my mom’s car stopped next to us. I wanted Mom to say, “Oh, my poor sweetheart. Let me hug you and everything will be fine.”
However, my mom only said, “What have you done to your face? Vanessa, look at what you’ve done!” Mom wasn’t the gentle “I love you, sweetie” type.
Sometimes, I thought Mom had no mercy. But in her own way, she was holding me tighter than I could understand — she was teaching me the lesson I needed. “You did it — deal with it and learn from it. One day, the consequences (后果) will be greater and I won’t be there to help you. Think it out, Vanessa.”

CARE London to Paris Cycle Challenge
In this challenge you’ll cycle from London to Paris in three days, enjoying the beautiful countryside along the way.
You will cycle through the peace of rural (乡村的) England to Portsmouth, where you will cross the river by boat to Ouistreham. The route then winds through peaceful lands and attractive villages, where you can taste fine French food before cycling to your final destination, Paris.
Why join our London to Paris Cycle Challenge?
This is a great way to get fit and experience the best of rural Europe with friends, colleagues or on your own as a personal challenge. The money you raise will support CARE’s work around the world.

With local volunteers’ support, women living in remote areas can benefit from health services.

Three nights’ accommodation
Meals during the challenge, including a celebration meal on the final night in Paris

When Paul Cave was 19, his father-in-law told him how, on March 19, 1932, he had queued (排队) up for two days at Wynyard Station so he could buy the first rail ticket to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In 1985, two days before he died, he gave that ticket to Cave — ticket number 00001. “It created a fascination (酷爱) with the bridge that I have to this day,” says Cave. And it started him on a long journey towards another Harbour Bridge first.
Cave came up with a simple but daring idea — lease (租用) the bridge from the government and allow ordinary people to climb Australia’s greatest icon. “I thought it would take two years,” says Cave, 63. “What appeared like a simple job turned into some very complex activities. But in business, you just have to keep going — it’s about having self-belief.” Indeed, it took him nine years and ten months to convince the NSW government to allow his dream to be a reality. “Six years were wasted dealing with some very restrictive officials,” says Cave. They threw difficulty after difficulty in his path with doubts over the safety of the climbers and the motorists below — the list went on and on.
Through it all, Cave held the ticket tightly. It was a constant reminder of why, to Cave, this fight was worth winning. Finally, in 1995, came the breakthrough (突破) he’d worked for — a letter arrived from WorkCover, the state’s occupational health and safety insurer, backing his idea.
Since opening on October 1, 1998, over 1.8 million people have climbed the 1,439 steps to the top of the bridge, making BridgeClimb a $50-million-a-year success and a major international tourist attraction.
8. Cave at first thought his dream .
A. was a hard task
B. was easy to come true
C. would get support from the government
D. would become some complex activities
9. What was the restrictive officials’ attitude towards Cave’s idea?
A. Cautious. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Enthusiastic.
10. What inspired Cave to fight for his dream during the hard situation?
A. WorkCover. B. Harbour Bridge.
C. BridgeClimb. D. Ticket 00001.
11. The text mainly tells us that .
A. not every dream in our life is very easy to come true
B. you should have self-belief even faced with great difficulty
C. family members always give you the inspiration for success
D. life seems a long journey towards another Harbour Bridge first
D
A habitat is a natural area where wildlife lives undisturbed. Most animals and plants have become endangered not because they have been killed on purpose but because their habitats are being destroyed.
Human activities have changed or destroyed habitats for thousands of years. The natural habitats in almost every country in the world have been affected in some way. Let us take Britain as an example. Nowadays most of the British countryside consists of fields of grass grown for cattle and sheep or crops for humans. If you had lived about a thousand years ago, the countryside would have looked very different for most of Britain was covered with forest.
Now there are only small areas of woodland across the country, one of the largest areas being the New Forest in Hampshire. Throughout the centuries humans have steadily (持续地) cut down the trees to make room for the human population which has increased greatly particularly during the past 200 years or so. The trees have been replaced by houses, factories, schools, roads, farmland etc. Hedgerows (灌木篱笆) which were planted by humans as boundaries (界限) around fields have replaced woodlands.
As you may imagine, the great loss of habitats has affected the wildlife that lives in them. Large animals such as the Brown Bear and the Auroch became extinct in Britain during the 10th century mainly due to destruction (破坏) of their forest habitats. Other British species of animals and plants have become extinct during the last few hundred years and many more are endangered today. Although many organizations are working to protect wildlife, natural habitats are still being destroyed.
12. The text mainly tells us .
A. what a habitat is
B. how to protect wildlife
C. habitat destruction makes animals endangered
D. how to prevent the environment from being destroyed
13. According to the text, animals are endangered mainly because .
A. people kill wild animals on purpose
B. the environment is seriously polluted
C. humans haven’t worked to protect them
D. the human population has increased greatly
14. We can learn from the text that .
A. the New Forest is the largest woodland in the world
B. the Brown Bear has been extinct for many years in Britain
C. humans destroyed natural habitats mainly by growing crops
D. humans planted hedgerows to make home for cattle and sheep
15. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A. Setting up reserves is the best way to protect animals.
B. We can hardly stop animals from being endangered.
C. Things will become better for wild animals in Britain.
D. Human activities began to affect wildlife 200 years ago.

Dear Santa,
What do I ask this year? I have read each ad carefully in my mailbox, and looked through the colorful ads in the newspaper. There are so many lovely things, but I need nothing.
I realize this as I walk up the hill on my strong legs. I can hear the air fill my lungs. I feel the cold on my cheeks. I smell the smoke of the fire that warms my home. I see the snow-covered mountains and the small river dotted with fat geese.
I need nothing. There are people who love me. There are people who forgive my sometimes bad temper and who touch me with loving hands. There are neighbors who smile in the store. There are shopkeepers who tolerate me when I don’t have enough money. There are kind faces in public places.
There is a fat cat who often slides into my garage. Dogs and other cats share my hearth (炉床); I love to feel their fur with my feet. There are hawks that teach their young how to fly, right there behind my house. There are deer that wander into my yard and smell apples.
Green beans, tomatoes, peas and carrots color my kitchen. And a full bucket (桶) of hand tools and neatly dried seeds promise next year’s rich harvest. I need nothing.
Today I discovered a hole in my jeans. I felt the December air flow down my leg. How powerful the hand is that sweeps the wind along the mountains! Santa, dear old soul, just give me another day like this one in my life.

I want to become a journalist and I wonder what makes a good journalist. In order to find the answer, I talked to Mary Harte who worked with the BBC for over 20 years as a journalist.
“You’ve got to have the interest. If you don’t like it, you will not persist because journalism is a very difficult job,” Mary said.
Out of experience Mary told me that it was very important for a journalist to watch and talk to people. She said, “What a journalist does is painting a little picture of a story. The information has to be accurate. Therefore, you really have to be watching and listening.”
Mary also emphasized (强调) the importance of experience. “It is important to collect as many skills as possible to be able to stand out of the crowd. A lot of the skills come from experience, so you won’t walk in the street and be a good journalist. You will be a good journalist because you’ve done it long enough,” she said.
Mary said, “You will not get a job handed to you. You will have to be prepared to put in long hours; you will have to be prepared to ring people, and you will have to be prepared to have no money for quite a while. In a word, you will have to work hard for it. Then it gets to the stage where you love your job and you think ‘Why is somebody paying me to do something that I really love?’”
From what an experienced journalist said, I learn that it is not just about the skills, but also the passion required to work in the field of journalism.

At 91, Philip Theil lives in a century-old house in Seattle’s University District and that’s the way he wants to keep it. “As far as I’m concerned, I would not like to leave this place. Living in a group is something I couldn’t tolerate. I’d kill myself before I have to do that.” Many elderly Americans, who can no longer manage on their own, spend their final years in a nursing home. However, the vast majority of seniors would prefer to live in their own homes as long as possible.
Theil says he and his wife manage pretty well right now. But the couple can feel their advancing age and realize they will soon need more help with basic household chores, like changing the light bulb at the top of the stairs.
“To change that tube, I have to bring in a stepladder (折梯) and put it partly on the landing and partly on the stairs and climb up,” Theil says. “It’s frightening.” In the old days, the Theils could ask their children to help them. But those young helpers have grown up and gone. “We have kids and we call them sometimes, but one lives in Munich, Germany, another lives in London and the third lives in New York,” Theil says. “They’re not going to visit us for a weekend.”
So the Theils would like to join a virtual (虚拟的) village, which provides a local network of volunteers helping the elderly people in place. They help seniors with anything from transportation to home repairs and dog walking. The concept came into being in Boston a decade ago and has since grown into a national movement. In most cases, the villages charge a membership (会员) fee from about $100 to more than $1,000 per year. Once you’re a member, some of the services are free.

It all started off with five. It was raining, and my dad told me that I had to make five free throws (投球) one after another without a break before I could go home. I was ten years old at that time. So I shot (投球) until I indeed made five free throws. Pretty soon the number of free throws increased until I got to high school and I had to make seventy-five before I could leave the gym.
I used to get mad when I reached the required amount and I would miss the next one, but my dad made me start over, saying that I missed it on purpose. So in high school I would usually get to 120 before I stopped. My highest ever was 175. I never expected this would ever bring me some benefit, but one game really changed my idea.
Our school team was playing basketball match with Royal High School, and we lost the game by twenty points a week earlier, so this game was all about revenge (报仇). With two minutes left in the game, my team was up by six and their coach told them to foul (犯规). Our coach immediately put forward a perfect plan — giving the ball to me every time. And every time my teammates gave me the ball, the other team would foul me. Then I went to the free throw line and made two free throws successfully. I ended up going ten-for-ten that game all in the last two minutes. The final score was 57-50 and we won.

Having attended a first-aid-at-work course, Brian Cracknell soon found himself responding to two emergencies in a week.
Brian was at work in his bus company office in Weston-super-Mare on May 18 when a colleague called to say there had been an accident at a bus stop nearby. He ran to the scene with his first aid kit and found an old lady sitting at the bus stop. When boarding (上车) the bus, the old lady painfully hurt her left leg, which was bleeding.
He introduced himself, and asked some basic first aid questions to get a general picture of her health. Then he put his jacket on the floor, using the lady’s coat as a pillow, and gently laid her down so he could raise her legs and apply some bandages. Bryan said, “At first I was a bit worried about remembering to do all the right things. I made sure she was as comfortable as possible.” When he had nearly finished, he told the lady that she was his first one. The lady said he was doing a great job.
Just a week later, Brian got a second call-out to help another lady at a bus stop.
Having used his new skills twice within a short time, Brian has decided to sign up as a Red Cross first aid volunteer. A Japanese company has ordered all of its 2,700 employees to get identical (一模一样的) hairstyles. For men, the preferred cut is short on the sides and back but longer on top. For women, the company prefers a bob with a longer fringe (刘海) that can be swept to one side. This unusual request is its effort to help the country save energy.
The spokeswoman for the Tokyo-based construction firm Maeda Corporation Chizuru Inoue explained, “Our company is eager to protect the environment and we encourage our staff to carry out many environment-friendly actions.”
She added, “We are not sure of the data yet, but we believe if people have short hair, they do not need to use their hair driers for so long and they will use less water. If all our employees do this, then we may save a lot of power.” Some staff are confused about which style they must have and have been asking which salons (美容院) give the best cut.
The energy-saving move is part of a national campaign to reduce energy consumption (消耗) following the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Japan has been struggling to produce enough electricity since the tsunami ended production at the Fukushima plants. The disaster resulted in a review of the country’s energy policy that now means less than a quarter of its remaining nuclear plants are in use. The government has talked about a move away from nuclear energy towards more sustainable (能持续的) technologies. Many government departments have taken measures to save power, including a reduced use of air conditioning in offices and schools. Many employees cannot turn down the air conditioner below 27 degrees in the hottest summer months.

11. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Sustainable power is welcome in Japan
B. Nuclear disaster brings bad results
C. Short hairstyles may help save energy
D. Japan is lacking in energy
D
It turns out that nodding off (睡觉) in class may not be a bad idea, as a new study has shown that going to sleep shortly after learning new materials is the best way to remember them.
According to US lead author Jessica Payne, a psychologist at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, nodding off after learning something new is like “telling” the sleeping brain what to remember. Along with colleagues, she studied 207 students who slept for at least six hours per night. Students were randomly (随机地) assigned to study something declarative (陈述的) at 9 am or 9 pm, and returned for testing 30 minutes, 12 hours or 24 hours later.
Declarative memory refers to the ability to consciously (有意识地) remember facts and events, and can be divided into memory for events and memory for facts about the world. People use both types of memory every day — remembering where they parked today or learning how a colleague prefers to be called.
At the 12-hour retest, memory was better following a night of sleep compared to a day of wakefulness (不眠). At the 24-hour retest, with all students having received both a full night of sleep and a full day of wakefulness, students’ memories were greater when sleep happened shortly after learning rather than following a full day of wakefulness.
“Our study confirms that sleeping directly after learning something new is beneficial for memory. What’s special for this study is that we have shown sleep’s influence on declarative memory,” Payne said. “Since we found that sleeping soon after learning benefited both types of memory, this means that it would be a good thing to go over any information you need to remember before going to bed. In some sense, you may be telling the sleeping brain what to consolidate (巩固).”
12. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. How to improve one’s memory is a difficult problem.
B. Nodding off after learning something new helps remember it.
C. Students should nod off in class after they learn new materials.
D. The best way to remember new materials is to nod off in class.
13. We can learn about the study that .
A. Jessica Payne and her colleagues were tested
B. 207 students were eager to take the test
C. it tested students studying something declarative
D. people’s memory can be divided into two types
14. Paragraph 4 mainly tells us .
A. students’ memories are the best if they sleep for 12 hours each day
B. sleeping for 24 hours contributes to improving students’ memories
C. a full day of wakefulness can make students’ memories improved greatly
D. students’ memories are better when sleep happens shortly after learning
15. What suggestion does Payne give in the last paragraph?
A. The more you sleep, the more you remember.
B. Go over what you want to remember before going to bed.
C. Teachers should allow their students to sleep in class.
D. If you want to improve your memory, you should sleep.

Most of life is regular. You do the same things you did yesterday, the day before and every day for the last month. Habits, good or bad, make you who you are. 16 If you know how to change your habits, then even a small effort can create big changes. Here are some tips to get you started:
One habit for 30 days. You focus on one change for thirty days. 17 I’ve used this as the basis for most of my habit changes. It certainly works to form the automatic (自动的) programs that run in the background of your mind.
Replace lost needs. If you switch on your computer and start removing hardware (硬件), what will happen? 18 Similarly, you can’t just pull out habits without replacing the needs they meet. Giving up television might mean you need to find a new way to relax or get information.
One habit at a time. A month may seem like a long time to focus on only one change, but I’ve found trying to change more than a few habits at a time to be unwise. 19 Multitasking (多任务处理) between three or four often means none become habits.
20 Your change should involve one or two rules, not a dozen. Exercising once each day for at least thirty minutes is easier to follow than exercising on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays by doing yoga the first day and mountain biking the third day. Simple rules create habits while complex rules create headaches.
A. Keep it simple.
B. The key is how to control them.
C. Chances are that your computer will not work.
D. After that time it will surely become a habit.
E. You can’t know whether a different habit will work until you try it.
F. With just one habit change, you can focus on making it really stick.
G. If your change brings you more pain than joy, you’d better give it up.
