第二部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
This story happened during World War Ⅱ. It was a fierce battle. Many soldiers had lost their lives. Horror gripped (紧抓) Jim’s heart because he saw that his lifelong friend was left behind in a trench (战壕). Continuous gunfire whizzed over his head. Jim asked the lieutenant (中尉) if he might go out into the “no-man’s-land” between the trenches to bring his fallen friend back.
“You can go,” said the lieutenant, “but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your life away.” Jim looked up. Continuous gunfire was still whizzing over his head, but he had made up his mind. He went out of the trench and moved towards his fallen friend slowly. Amazingly, he managed to reach his friend, put him onto his shoulders and bring him back to their company’s trench. As the two got to the bottom of the trench, the lieutenant checked the wounded soldier, and then looked kindly at Jim.
“I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead and you got shot. You may die, too.” “It was worth it, though, Sir,” said Jim. The lieutenant was confused and asked, “What do you mean? Your friend is dead.” “Yes, Sir,” Jim answered, “but it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive and I had the satisfaction of hearing him saying, ‘Jim…, I knew you’d come.’”

Guilford County Schools’ oldest volunteer, 97-year-old Thurman Haynes, has been chosen as the national winner in the Salute to Senior Service Competition, sponsored (赞助) by Home Instead.
Haynes, a daily volunteer at Haynes-Inman Education Center in Jamestown, was selected from thousands of nominees (被提名者). “Thurman Haynes reminds us all how important it is to celebrate life on a daily basis,” said Kevin Carr in his nomination. “His love he gives others is amazing.”
Haynes has been involved with the school from the start. He sold the school system the land on which Haynes-Inman was built. He can see the school from his home. The school, which opened in August, 2010, educates special-needs students between the ages of 3 and 22. And Haynes knows something about that, too.
His only grandchild, Meredith, had mental and physical disabilities. She died in 1993 shortly before her 21st birthday. The school is named in part for her, the Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center. In her honor, he volunteers more than 80 hours per month at the school.
He is often one of the first to arrive and greet students each school day. He assists them off the bus and ensures they arrive at class safely. Haynes also lends a hand during PE classes, helping students participate in volleyball, jump rope and other activities.
The students and staff at Haynes-Inman held a parade in January in honor of Haynes’ 97th birthday. “Haynes proves age is not important when it comes to making a positive difference to the lives of others,” said Jeff Huber, president of Home Instead. Haynes is among the 62 percent of seniors 68 and older who take part in voluntary work, according to a recent Marist Poll sponsored by Home Instead.
43. What is the main idea of the text?

45. How does Haynes help the special-needs students?
A. He helps them rebuild their confidence.
B. He drives them to school and back home.
C. He teaches them patiently in PE classes.
D. He treats them kindly with a heart of gold.
46. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Jeff Huber was in charge of Haynes’ birthday parade.
B. The author calls on more seniors to do voluntary work.
C. Volunteering can make the old people live a positive life.
D. Many American seniors devote themselves to voluntary work.

People with different interests and preferences can enjoy themselves through hip-hop culture. It involves spoken words, break-dancing, painting, fashion, lively design, technology and more. Hip-hop is becoming the unofficial music in the education world, as more artists organize school programs, summer camps, and other activities aimed at engaging (使参与) city youth in the classroom through the beliefs in hip-hop culture. Even more and more university teachers — who were once strongly against hip-hop — have joined the group: in the past two decades, hip-hop culture, including hip-hop education, has become an accepted field in universities and the subject of a lot of books.
Hip-hop culture has influenced every piece of American culture and global culture. Teachers must be willing to engage in it because it’s a part of their students’ lives. In that way, teachers can truly be effective in teaching students.
Teachers might at first feel frightened by hip-hop culture, an area in which they might not have previous experience. But a lack of knowledge is actually a blessing; the best trained hip-hop educators have been those that are at the beginning disconnected from the culture. One of the biggest sayings in hip-hop is “keep it real”. If a teacher comes to the classroom and says, “I don’t know hip-hop, but I recognize that it’s your culture and I want to learn,” the kids will teach the teacher, and then the students will be more willing to learn from that educator.
Peer (同龄人) teaching has long been recognized as a powerful way for students to learn and gain confidence in their own abilities. It’s also a useful way of approaching technology in the classroom, where students who love digital technology might know more than their teachers. Thus, teachers and students are put on a more equal basis, with more respect between them — developing an atmosphere where everyone has something to offer for a better educational process.
47. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Some teachers still dislike hip-hop culture.
B. Hip-hop is the most influential music in the world.
C. Hip-hop has become the center of people’s daily life.
D. Hip-hop culture becomes more popular in the education world.
48. According to the text, young people prefer to learn from the teachers who .
A. are fond of music B. show respect for their culture
C. know nothing about their lives D. are willing to teach hip-hop culture
49. What advice does the author offer teachers in the last paragraph?
A. Paying more attention to students’ interests.
B. Involving students in teaching certain subjects.
C. Admitting that students know more than teachers.
D. Learning hip-hop culture with advanced technology.
50. Where can we most probably read the text?
A. In the education section of a magazine.
B. In a book on how to learn technology.
C. In a book on how to sing hip-hop songs.
D. In the fashion section of a newspaper.

A phobia (恐怖症) is a strong fear of something that, in reality, presents little or no danger. Most phobias develop in childhood, but they can also develop in adults. The word phobia comes from the Greek language. It means “to fear”.
Some phobias are common. The fear of spiders is arachnophobia. The fear of small spaces is called claustrophobia. And the fear of heights is acrophobia.
But there are also uncommon phobias. Somniphobia is the fear of falling asleep. And papaphobia is a fear of the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope. The list of phobias goes on and on.
Having a phobia is not a laughing matter. Phobias often create problems in a person’s life. One common phobia that can create problems and hold people back especially at school and at work is the fear of public speaking or glossophobia. “Glossa” is Greek for “tongue”. A student with glossophobia may be afraid to speak up in class. At work, a person with this phobia may not speak up in meetings.
Whether it is a phobia or a real danger, our bodies react to fear. And we often use physical expressions to describe ourselves when we are afraid. I was so scared that “my blood ran cold” or “I broke out into a cold sweat”.
If a book or movie is scary, we often call it “spine-tingling” or “hair-raising”. If something scares us, we can say it “made our hair stand on end” or that it had us “shaking in our shoes”. All these expressions describe what happens to a person’s body when they are afraid.
The U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt famously said in his inaugural speech (就职演说) that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. That is a nice idea. But try telling that to a person who is “afraid of their own shadow”.
51. Which of the following can most properly describe “phobia”?
A. There are no waves without wind.
B. Fear is often greater than the danger.
C. Fear is everywhere around the world.
D. There’s danger where you think it exists.
52. Which of the following is a rare fear?
A. Fear of some spiders. B. Fear of getting to sleep.
C. Fear of standing high. D. Fear of speaking in public.
53. The author thinks that having a phobia is something .
A. not really scary B. not so serious at all
C. we must take seriously D. that is often laughed at
54. When you see something horrible you’ll “shake in your shoes”; it is .
A. a physical expression B. a natural reaction
C. a sign of a big danger D. a mental expression
55. Roosevelt’s words tend to indicate that .
A. only your shadow is fearful
B. there are very few scary things
C. there is no danger existing at all
D. the fear maker is usually yourself

Kids are loveable. With them around, our lives are brighter and more fun. Also our kids change the atmasphere of our house. When they’re in the house, it appears that every negative thing seems to disappear, and brighter moments start to appear. If they aren’t around, our life seems dull and boring, which is why we miss them when they’re gone. Yes, kids can change our lives but the question is: what can we offer them in return? As parents, it is our duty and our responsibility to provide our kids with what they need.
Then what are the basic needs of our kids? Firstly, it’s important to give kids the right foods and nutrition they need. Keep in mind that these foods aren’t just those foods found in stores and other fast food restaurants. Instead, our kids need foods that are rich in nutrients.
Secondly, it’s our duty to make sure our kids are safe all the time. We can give our family a good and simple house depending on our money but the important thing is that they feel secure. Our kids will appreciate it very much if we give them their play room or bedroom.
The third basic need is clothing, which protects them from harsh weather conditions. They could die from coldness or heat if we don’t consider proper clothing. Education is also one of the important basic needs of our kids, because there is a need for them to know the things around them.
However, It isn’t enough to spend all your time working to provide whatever your family need and want, because then you’ll lose time for the family. Just remember to give love and attention to your family no matter how busy you are. Every effort is surely appreciated and loved.

Idol worship is very popular among the youth both in China and in western countries. What kind of people should teenagers take as idols? As far as I know, some of my classmates choose famous film, TV or sports stars like Jackie Chan and Michael Jordan, while the others prefer great figures such as Zhou Enlai and Thomas Edison. There are also a few adoring their parents.
As for me, the superstar Jay Chou, a well-known singer, is my idol. Jay experienced a lot of difficulties at the beginning of his career. It’s his passion for music and persistence that made him successful.
Frankly speaking, having an idol in heart is amazing as long as we don’t spend too much time admiring him/her blindly. The fact is that an idol can always inspire us to achieve our dreams.

A
My mom just bought me a new bike. Since my cousin Mary didn’t have a bike with her, she walked next to me. I thought that Mary would jump on the luggage carrier (行李架) over the back tire when I was riding. Mom knew exactly what I was thinking. “Don’t ride the bike with Mary on the back,” she said. “It’s too dangerous. You could kill yourself. Take turns.”
I nodded, but I was thinking I could handle this. A few minutes later, I turned right to a wide road. “Jump on the back,” I told Mary. I rode fast, laughing as the wind blew through our hair. It was exciting, until the handlebar (车把) started shaking. The front tire dropped into a drain (下水道) and I fell off the bike, still holding the handlebar.
My face, hands, and knees crashed into the pavement. The pain in my mouth was unbearable, and I tasted blood. I turned towards Mary who was on the ground, holding her knee and crying. Seconds later, it seemed that my mom’s car stopped next to us. I wanted Mom to say, “Oh, my poor sweetheart. Let me hug you and everything will be fine.”
However, my mom only said, “What have you done to your face? Vanessa, look at what you’ve done!” Mom wasn’t the gentle “I love you, sweetie” type.
Sometimes, I thought Mom had no mercy. But in her own way, she was holding me tighter than I could understand — she was teaching me the lesson I needed. “You did it — deal with it and learn from it. One day, the consequences(后果) will be greater and I won’t be there to help you. Think it out, Vanessa.”

CARE works to help poor people lift themselves out of poverty (贫穷). For example, we support volunteers like Eugenia who travels by bike to distant towns near her home in Peru to make sure pregnant (怀孕的) women and new mothers receive medical care. Before, women were often left with little support or language barriers which meant medical care assistants could not communicate effectively with them. With local volunteers’ support, women living in remote areas can benefit from health services.
What is included on the London to Paris Cycle Challenge?
Guides, medicine and support staff
Three nights’ accommodation
Meals during the challenge, including a celebration meal on the final night in Paris
Boat from Portsmouth to Ouistreham
Return from Paris to London
The minimum amount of the money you’ll have to collect for this challenge is £1,350, which includes your registration (注册) fee. We’ll support you throughout your training and general preparation.

When Paul Cave was 19, his father-in-law told him how, on March 19, 1932, he had queued (排队) up for two days at Wynyard Station so he could buy the first rail ticket to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In 1985, two days before he died, he gave that ticket to Cave — ticket number 00001. “It created a fascination (酷爱) with the bridge that I have to this day,” says Cave. And it started him on a long journey towards another Harbour Bridge first.
Cave came up with a simple but daring idea — lease (租用) the bridge from the government and allow ordinary people to climb Australia’s greatest icon. “I thought it would take two years,” says Cave, 63. “What appeared like a simple job turned into some very complex activities. But in business, you just have to keep going — it’s about having self-belief.” Indeed, it took him nine years and ten months to convince the NSW government to allow his dream to be a reality. “Six years were wasted dealing with some very restrictive officials,” says Cave. They threw difficulty after difficulty in his path with doubts over the safety of the climbers and the motorists below — the list went on and on.
Through it all, Cave held the ticket tightly. It was a constant reminder of why, to Cave, this fight was worth winning. Finally, in 1995, came the breakthrough (突破) he’d worked for — a letter arrived from WorkCover, the state’s occupational health and safety insurer, backing his idea.
Since opening on October 1, 1998, over 1.8 million people have climbed the 1,439 steps to the top of the bridge, making BridgeClimb a $50-million-a-year success and a major international tourist attraction.

A habitat is a natural area where wildlife lives undisturbed. Most animals and plants have become endangered not because they have been killed on purpose but because their habitats are being destroyed.
Human activities have changed or destroyed habitats for thousands of years. The natural habitats in almost every country in the world have been affected in some way. Let us take Britain as an example. Nowadays most of the British countryside consists of fields of grass grown for cattle and sheep or crops for humans. If you had lived about a thousand years ago, the countryside would have looked very different for most of Britain was covered with forest.
Now there are only small areas of woodland across the country, one of the largest areas being the New Forest in Hampshire. Throughout the centuries humans have steadily (持续地) cut down the trees to make room for the human population which has increased greatly particularly during the past 200 years or so. The trees have been replaced by houses, factories, schools, roads, farmland etc. Hedgerows (灌木篱笆) which were planted by humans as boundaries (界限) around fields have replaced woodlands.
As you may imagine, the great loss of habitats has affected the wildlife that lives in them. Large animals such as the Brown Bear and the Auroch became extinct in Britain during the 10th century mainly due to destruction (破坏) of their forest habitats. Other British species of animals and plants have become extinct during the last few hundred years and many more are endangered today. Although many organizations are working to protect wildlife, natural habitats are still being destroyed.
47. The text mainly tells us .
A. what a habitat is
B. how to protect wildlife
C. habitat destruction makes animals endangered
D. how to prevent the environment from being destroyed
48. According to the text, animals are endangered mainly because .
A. people kill wild animals on purpose
B. the environment is seriously polluted
C. humans haven’t worked to protect them
D. the human population has increased greatly
49. We can learn from the text that .
A. the New Forest is the largest woodland in the world
B. the Brown Bear has been extinct for many years in Britain
C. humans destroyed natural habitats mainly by growing crops
D. humans planted hedgerows to make home for cattle and sheep
50. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A. Setting up reserves is the best way to protect animals.
B. We can hardly stop animals from being endangered.
C. Things will become better for wild animals in Britain.
D. Human activities began to affect wildlife 200 years ago.

The apple is a round shaped fruit that grows on small deciduous (落叶的) trees. There are numerous varieties of apples: Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Fuji and many more. They come in different colors such as red, yellow and green varying in flavor and sweetness.
Apples are all good for your health. They can improve your overall health by preventing heart disease, improving memory, maintaining blood sugar levels, reducing risk of stroke (中风), reducing risk of cancer and more! In addition, apples also can help make skin look younger, especially the Granny Smith, Red Delicious and Fuji kinds.
Apples can be eaten in so many ways! Bake them, use them in desserts or eat them whole! Add them in fruit salads, eat with cheese, or add a fun flavor on top or all over! You can eat them for breakfast, lunch or dinner! You can also eat them as a snack, or use them for fun party games!
However, there are some things you must pay attention to when you want to eat apples. For example, you must eat clean apples. Some apples are grown with the use of insecticides (杀虫剂) or protective waxes, containing unhealthy remains. So wash your apples with soap and water. Of course, you’d better buy organic apples if you can.
If you want to buy apple juice, just be careful and read the nutritional label on the container. Avoid drinks with high sugar content. Instead, look for 100% natural fruit juices or make your own freshly squeezed (榨), homemade juices. Consider buying organic apple juice, too.
CAUTION! Apples can turn rotten. Watch for signs of brown spots or soft texture when squeezed. In order to avoid becoming sick, don’t eat apples that have been rotten.

三、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Today I received a phone call from a former member of our courses earlier this year. His name is Ray Steers. He called to tell us a story that happened last Thursday. Here is the story.
Last Thursday night, a young man suffered heart failure on the football field in Portmarnock Centre. A security guard asked me to take action as he knew I was a first aider. I rushed to the scene and discovered that the man had no breathing.
I immediately started CPR (心肺复苏术). My friend John heard the news and followed me. We kept everyone away, including the man’s dad who was trying to hold him. I started CPR and the shock was given. The man responded but was not conscious (有意识的). I continued performing CPR while John gave more shocks to the man. Then we put him in recovery position. The CPR kept blood and oxygen to his brain and the shocks restarted his heart.
The man is now alive and well. His dad told me it was the best Christmas present that he could have wished for. The man we saved is of the same age as my own son. I was so happy for his dad.
This is an amazing story. It makes us really proud that we trained Ray twice in the last 2 years. We are very proud of Ray and hope that this story underlines the need that everybody in this country should be trained in first aid. If you are interested in joining a CPR course, please call us or visit our website for more details.
36. Why did Ray Steers call?
A. To ask about a CPR course.
B. To ask for help to save a man’s life.
C. To thank the writer for saving his life.
D. To tell his experience of saving a man’s life.
37. When the security guard found a man was suffering heart failure, he .
A. checked the man’s breathing
B. tried to perform CPR on the man
C. turned to someone who had first-aid skills
D. was too frightened to do anything
38. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To tell us how to perform CPR on others.
B. To show that danger can occur to us anytime.
C. To encourage more people to take their first-aid courses.
D. To share a story that he heard from a former member of the courses.
B
Many common sayings are familiar to us. However, what did they really mean when they were first used? Look at the following to find out.
clear as a bell
Now, it is used to mean something that can be understood without difficulty. Back then? Before the time of loudspeakers (扩音器), church bells were used to inform a village or town of danger, death or something important. These church bells were big and their sounds carried long distances so that they could be heard from faraway farms. The sounds were loud and clear — clear as a bell.
rain cats and dogs
This sounds silly. How can cats and dogs be rained from the sky?Okay, they can’t be rained from the sky, but they can fall down from slippery (滑的) roofs. In Middle-aged England, these animals used to live on the roofs of houses. When it rained heavily, the roofs would become slippery and these animals would fall onto the ground below. So now this saying means raining heavily.
saved by the bell
This phrase is often used in classes where students are “saved” from answering difficult questions by the school bell. Its beginning was quite fearful. Hundreds of years ago in England, there was a fear of being buried alive. Maybe because medicine wasn’t as developed as it is today, it was difficult to tell if someone was really gone forever. To make sure someone who was buried alive could be saved, a little bell was tied to the person’s hand. This way, if he woke up underground, the grave keepers would hear the bell and save him.

C. They hated to live together with their owners.
D. They were fond of walking on slippery roofs.
41. In the past, a little bell was tied to the hand of a dead person in the UK for the purpose of .
A. letting people know he was dead
B. preventing him from feeling lonely underground
C. making it possible to save him if he woke up
D. showing others that he died of some rare disease
42. What’s the topic of the text?

To me, everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find, it does exist.
One sunny afternoon in 1953, we went out to the school’s playground for our gym class. The teacher taught us various track and field events. I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin (标枪). Finally, when everyone had a chance to throw, the longest throw went about 30 yards. Now it was my turn. I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let it go. I watched as the javelin took off. As it went past the 50-yard mark, it was still going. Then people began cheering. Nobody could believe what little Orowitz had just done.
The very next day I began practicing with it, and every day that summer —for six hours or more — I would throw it in a nearby schoolyard. With an eye to the Olympics, I continued to work out until one day I could go into a college. But not warming up properly, I tore some tissues in my left shoulder, so I gave up my dream of attending the Olympics.
Several years later, a co-worker, who was a hopeful actor, asked for help in learning his part. When I began reading the script (剧本), the same kind of fascination that took hold of me when I picked up the javelin appeared. Immediately I attended an acting school. That led to small parts in movies, which at last led me to another area — directing.
I feel strongly that we must keep our minds open; we can’t let ourselves be discouraged or depressed when the talent doesn’t readily appear. Yet when it does, we must be prepared to get hold of it right away.
43. What did we know about the writer in 1953?
A. He found his true talent.
B. He was bad at all the subjects.
C. Many of his classmates didn’t like him.
D. He decided to choose a career in acting.
44. Why did the writer give up his dream of attending the Olympics?
A. Because he didn’t get prepared.
B. Because he was more interested in acting.
C. Because he got injured in the left shoulder.
D. Because he lost interest in throwing the javelin.
45. When the writer wrote the text, he was probably a(n) .
A. teacher B. actor C. director D. athlete
46. What doesn’t the writer probably agree?
A. Everyone has a talent although it’s hard to find it sometimes.
B. The joy of finding something that one can do makes one try his best.
C. One should be patient and active even if the talent doesn’t appear.
D. One can find his true talent only after suffering some failures.
D
You may have received CPR training some time ago, but could you remember the proper technique in an emergency? Do you know what to do in the event of an earthquake? A new study shows that people often do not remember things they have seen hundreds of times.
In the study, 54 people were asked to write down the location of the fire extinguishers (灭火器) near their offices. While many have worked in their offices for years and have passed the bright red extinguishers several times a day, only 24% knew the answer. Many of them were surprised that they had never noticed them.
“If I ask you to draw the front of a dime (一角硬币) or the front of a dollar bill from memory, how well could you do that?” asks Alan Castel, a professor from UCLA. “You’ve seen it so many times, but you probably haven’t paid much attention to it.” Castel says not noticing things isn’t necessarily bad, particularly when those things are not important in your daily life. But with safety information, such as knowing where fire extinguishers are, being prepared can, of course, be very useful.
A few months later, the office workers were asked to take the same test again. All of them performed well this time. “We don’t notice something if we’re attending to something else,” says Castel. “Fire extinguishers are bright red and very conspicuous, but we’re almost blind to them until they become relevant (相关的).”
Castel also stresses that making errors during training was useful. As with the fire extinguisher exercise, errors can teach us that we don’t know something well and need to pay more attention in order to memorize them. It’s good if errors happen during a training and not during an event where you need the information. That’s part of the learning process.
47. What does the writer want to prove by giving the example of a dime?
A. It is a coin of the least value in the US.
B. The front design is different from the back one.
C. Most of us can draw something quite well from memory.
D. We may ignore something that we have seen many times.
48. According to the text, we will pay attention to things .
A. that are related to us B. that we often walk by
C. that are in front of us D. that we have seen for long
49. The underlined word “conspicuous” in Paragraph 4 probably means “ ”.
A. dangerous B. expensive C. obvious D. heavy
50. From the last paragraph, we can infer that .
A. training is a process to make errors
B. wrong information in training is harmful
C. it is natural to make errors in training
D. errors in training are a chance to learn

Various people have various reactions towards public transport. Some love it, some hate it and others have no choice but to use it. If everyone could own their own cars and drive themselves anywhere they wanted, we would have more traffic jams on our roads. This is why public transport becomes important. Although getting good and comfortable public transport may be a bit troublesome, it’ll save you lots of money in the long run.
The use of trains is a common way of traveling in the UK. This is especially so for people traveling from London to Paris. The most common trains that are used are owned by the Eurostar Train Service. There are about 20 Eurostar trains that leave London every day heading for Paris. The good thing is that the trains take about 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach their destination.
Many people in London prefer to take trains to Paris. They consider traveling by train one of the safer methods of traveling on the ground. Car or bus accidents happen on a daily basis on the roads. It’s rare to hear of train accidents. More importantly, a train has to undergo many safety checks before it’s released for service.
Trains in London are quite spacious and provide comfort for their customers. You’ll find that some of the trains have tables where people can work. Some of them even provide power plugs to charge laptops or mobile phones.
It’s faster to travel by a train compared to a bus or even a car. When you travel with a car or a bus, you’ll have to regularly slow down for various reasons including speed limit and traffic jams. However, when traveling by train, the speed is almost constant and there is no traffic jam on the rail track.
