This story happened during World War Ⅱ. It was a fierce battle. Many soldiers had lost their lives. Horror gripped (紧抓) Jim’s heart because he saw that his lifelong friend was left behind in a trench (战壕). Continuous gunfire whizzed over his head. Jim asked the lieutenant (中尉) if he might go out into the “no-man’s-land” between the trenches to bring his fallen friend back.
“You can go,” said the lieutenant, “but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your life away.” Jim looked up. Continuous gunfire was still whizzing over his head, but he had made up his mind. He went out of the trench and moved towards his fallen friend slowly. Amazingly, he managed to reach his friend, put him onto his shoulders and bring him back to their company’s trench. As the two got to the bottom of the trench, the lieutenant checked the wounded soldier, and then looked kindly at Jim.
“I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead and you got shot. You may die, too.” “It was worth it, though, Sir,” said Jim. The lieutenant was confused and asked, “What do you mean? Guilford County Schools’ oldest volunteer, 97-year-old Thurman Haynes, has been chosen as the national winner in the Salute to Senior Service Competition, sponsored (赞助) by Home Instead.
Haynes, a daily volunteer at Haynes-Inman Education Center in Jamestown, was selected from thousands of nominees (被提名者). “Thurman Haynes reminds us all how important it is to celebrate life on a daily basis,” said Kevin Carr in his nomination. “His love he gives others is amazing.”
Haynes has been involved with the school from the start. He sold the school system the land on which Haynes-Inman was built. He can see the school from his home. The school, which opened in August, 2010, educates special-needs students between the ages of 3 and 22. And Haynes knows something about that, too.
His only grandchild, Meredith, had mental and physical disabilities. She died in 1993 shortly before her 21st birthday. The school is named in part for her, the Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center. In her honor, he volunteers more than 80 hours per month at the school.
He is often one of the first to arrive and greet students each school day. He assists them off the bus and ensures they arrive at class safely. Haynes also lends a hand during PE classes, helping students participate in volleyball, jump rope and other activities.
The students and staff at Haynes-Inman held a parade in January in honor of Haynes’ 97th birthday. “Haynes proves age is not important when it comes to making a positive difference to the lives of others,” said Jeff Huber, president of Home Instead. Haynes is among the 62 percent of seniors 68 and older who take part in voluntary work, according to a recent Marist Poll sponsored by Home Instead.
43. What is the main idea of the text?

D. A 97-year-old volunteer wins a national award.
44. Haynes got nominated probably because of .

C. his positive attitude towards life D. his long work hours per month
45. How does Haynes help the special-needs students?
A. He helps them rebuild their confidence.
B. He drives them to school and back home.
C. He teaches them patiently in PE classes.
D. He treats them kindly with a heart of gold.
46. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Jeff Huber was in charge of Haynes’ birthday parade.
B. The author calls on more seniors to do voluntary work.
C. Volunteering can make the old people live a positive life.

People with different interests and preferences can enjoy themselves through hip-hop culture. It involves spoken words, break-dancing, painting, fashion, lively design, technology and more. Hip-hop is becoming the unofficial music in the education world, as more artists organize school programs, summer camps, and other activities aimed at engaging (使参与) city youth in the classroom through the beliefs in hip-hop culture. Even more and more university teachers — who were once strongly against hip-hop — have joined the group: in the past two decades, hip-hop culture, including hip-hop education, has become an accepted field in universities and the subject of a lot of books.
Hip-hop culture has influenced every piece of American culture and global culture. Teachers must be willing to engage in it because it’s a part of their students’ lives. In that way, teachers can truly be effective in teaching students.
Teachers might at first feel frightened by hip-hop culture, an area in which they might not have previous experience. But a lack of knowledge is actually a blessing; the best trained hip-hop educators have been those that are at the beginning disconnected from the culture. One of the biggest sayings in hip-hop is “keep it real”. If a teacher comes to the classroom and says, “I don’t know hip-hop, but I recognize that it’s your culture and I want to learn,” the kids will teach the teacher, and then the students will be more willing to learn from that educator.
Peer (同龄人) teaching has long been recognized as a powerful way for students to learn and gain confidence in their own abilities. It’s also a useful way of approaching technology in the classroom, where students who love digital technology might know more than their teachers. Thus, teachers and students are put on a more equal basis, with more respect between them — developing an atmosphere where everyone has something to offer for a better educational process.
47. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Some teachers still dislike hip-hop culture.
B. Hip-hop is the most influential music in the world.
C. Hip-hop has become the center of people’s daily life.
D. Hip-hop culture becomes more popular in the education world.
48. According to the text, young people prefer to learn from the teachers who .
A. are fond of music B. show respect for their culture
C. know nothing about their lives D. are willing to teach hip-hop culture
49. What advice does the author offer teachers in the last paragraph?
A. Paying more attention to students’ interests.
B. Involving students in teaching certain subjects.
C. Admitting that students know more than teachers.
D. Learning hip-hop culture with advanced technology.
50. Where can we most probably read the text?
A. In the education section of a magazine.
B. In a book on how to learn technology.
C. In a book on how to sing hip-hop songs.
D. In the fashion section of a newspaper.

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
Kids are loveable. With them around, our lives are brighter and more fun. Also our kids change the atmasphere of our house. When they’re in the house, it appears that every negative thing seems to disappear, and brighter moments start to appear. If they aren’t around, our life seems dull and boring, which is why we miss them when they’re gone. Yes, kids can change our lives but the question is: what can we offer them in return? As parents, it is our duty and our responsibility to provide our kids with what they need.
Then what are the basic needs of our kids? Firstly, it’s important to give kids the right foods and nutrition they need. Keep in mind that these foods aren’t just those foods found in stores and other fast food restaurants. Instead, our kids need foods that are rich in nutrients.
Secondly, it’s our duty to make sure our kids are safe all the time. We can give our family a good and simple house depending on our money but the important thing is that they feel secure. Our kids will appreciate it very much if we give them their play room or bedroom.
The third basic need is clothing, which protects them from harsh weather conditions. They could die from coldness or heat if we don’t consider proper clothing. Education is also one of the important basic needs of our kids, because there is a need for them to know the things around them.
However, It isn’t enough to spend all your time working to provide whatever your family need and want, because then you’ll lose time for the family. Just remember to give love and attention to your family no matter how busy you are. Every effort is surely appreciated and loved.

Section B (10 marks)
Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.
David never believed that true love existed. His parents divorced (离婚) when he was young and he didn’t think that true love was able to survive in today’s world. He was proved wrong. His grandparents were always supportive to the kids and tried to help them when their parents divorced. He knew they loved each other; he just wasn’t sure if it was true love. He had never heard them say, “I love you” or they hadn’t shown any affection even hugging. They had been married for over fifty years and he thought that their true love was gone.
But again he was wrong. His grandfather, Ralph, was struck ill in his junior year of college and he didn’t know how serious it was until he fell and hurt his hip. While in hospital, the doctors found out a tumor (肿瘤) in his lungs. They told him that he had lung cancer (肺癌) and due to previous illnesses, they could not operate and he was too weak for chemotherapy (化疗).
It was around Thanksgiving and by Christmas that his condition worsened. The cancer spread and in late January his sister, who was away at college, too, called him crying and said she was on her way home, because the doctors told their family that their grandfather had only a week to live, and that by the weekend he would no longer be with them. Their family came in from around the country and stayed next to his side.
It was not until then that he realized that true love did exist and would survive beyond death. Every night as his grandfather grew more fragile (虚弱的), he would whisper sweet words to grandmother, Madgie. The night before he died grandmother was walking out of his room and he said to her “I love you Madgie baby”.
The next morning he received a phone call at work saying that grandfather had passed away during the night. From his greadfather’s short battle with cancer, David realized how much two people can love each other and he realized how much it means to be loved and give love. It is the greatest gift on the earth and it lasts beyond life because you never forget your true love.

One possible version:
To celebrate Earth Day on April 22, 2012, all the teachers and students in our school were involved in a series of activities. Its aim was to educate us on the importance of protecting the environment on the earth.
In the morning, we publicized Earth Day through the radio, window displays, or electric screens on campus. Then the class meeting on the topic of annual Earth Day was held in each class for the purpose of avoiding wasting resources. And we also did much reading about the environmental protection that afternoon, which I think was really helpful in guiding our practice.
To be honest, my awareness of protecting the environment was greatly raised after the event. The earth, the only home of human beings, really matters. So the way to find the true meaning of Earth Day is to capture its spirit and make it part of our lives. Only in this way can we enjoy living on a more comfortable earth.

“I phoned 999 but, because of our position, they took 30 minutes — maybe even more — to reach us. I knew an air ambulance was also on the way from Exeter, but it seemed like a lifetime while I was waiting.”
Luckily, Linda had recently renewed her life-saving skills at first aid in the workplace course so she stayed calm and knew exactly what to do.
She said, “First, I placed my friend in the recovery position. Then I lay against her to keep her warm and wrapped both our coats around her. Then I just kept talking to her to keep her awake.”
Linda’s treatment kept her friend safe and warm until doctors arrived and took her to hospital. Looking back, she said, “Being a first aider for real was scary, but I kept my cool and everything the Red Cross taught me kicked in. I’m so glad I renewed my course.”
Karen added, “If it had not been for Linda’s first-aid skills, the situation could have been so much worse. She stayed so calm the whole time and I felt completely helpless. This incident has made us all aware of how important it is to have some basic first-aid skills.”
Interestingly, the three friends belong to a dog charity — South West GSD Rescue. GSDR promotes safety awareness (推进安全意识) (always have your mobile phone, try and walk with another person) while his members are out walking dogs.

Some expressions describe people who are important — or who at least think they are. One such expression is “bigwig”. In the 17th century, important men in Europe began to wear false hair, called wigs. As years passed, wigs began to get bigger. The size of a man’s wig depended on how important he was. The more important he was — or thought he was — the bigger the wig he wore.
Today, the expression “bigwig” is used to make fun of a person who feels important. People never tell someone he is a bigwig. They only use the expression behind his back.
“Big wheel” is another way to describe an important person. A big wheel may be the head of a company, a political leader, or a famous movie star. They are big wheels because they are powerful. What they do affects many people. Big wheels give the orders. Other people carry them out. As in many machines, a big wheel makes the little wheels turn.
“Big wheel” became a common expression after World War Ⅱ. The expression has been popular with people who fix parts of cars and trucks since then. They said a person “rolled a big wheel” if he was important and had influence.
The top of something is the highest part. So it is not surprising that “top” is part of another expression that describes an important person. The expression is “top banana”. A “top banana” is the leading person in a comedy show. The funniest comedian is called “the top banana”. The next is “second banana”. And so on.
Why a banana? A comedy act in earlier days often included a part where one of the comedians would hit the others over the head with a soft object. The object was shaped like the yellow fruit — the banana. “Top banana” is still used mainly in show business. Yet the expression can also be used to describe the top person in any area.
41. Why did important men in Europe wear large wigs in the 17th century?
A. Because they didn’t like their own hair.
B. Because they were in fact unimportant.
C. Because wearing large wigs was in fashion.
D. Because they wanted to show their importance.
42. The expression “big wheel” is used for people who .
A. carry out orders B. are very tall and fat
C. have great influence on others
D. look like wheels in the machine
43. Which of the following about “big wheel” is TRUE?
A. It refers to the workers in a company.
B. It can be used to laugh at the political leaders.
C. It has been used by repairmen for many years.
D. It was well-known during the Second World War.
44. The word “banana” is involved in the expression “top banana” because .
A. bananas were used in early comedy acts
B. the early comedians liked to eat bananas
C. the banana was the favorite fruit of the leading actor
D. the object used in the early show was similar to the banana
45. What can we infer from the text?
A. A “top banana” means a most funny comedy.
B. The expression “top banana” can be widely used now.
C. It’s a good way to describe someone as “bigwig” face to face.
D. The longer the wigs were, the more important the people were.

What’s the magic of coffee shops? Many people often spend hours in these places drinking a cup of refreshing (提神的) coffee after hard work at the office. After that, they will feel energetic again. It’s been said that JK Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books sitting in one in Edinburgh. But if you’re spending all day buying one expensive coffee after another and haven’t sold your first novel yet, the costs can really add up.
For those who just want to take time out, there’s a new choice in London: a pay-per-minute café. You can stay in the Ziferblat coffee shop for as long as you like. You can choose your favorite cup, dessert, and magazine. You’ll be given a clock when you come in to keep time. When you leave, you return the item and pay the bill.
The cost of hanging out, eating, working and meeting new people in the place is 3p per minute — or £1.80 an hour. The shop’s owner, Ivan Meetin, says, “Everything is free, except the time you spend here.” Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food to eat while accessing the Internet through wi-fi in the shop.
Meetin’s customers clearly are not the types who rush to work with a paper cup to drink from at their desks. They are there for the new coffee shop’s atmosphere. It is relaxing. Informality is at the heart of Meetin’s concept (原则) of the design.
The concept of coffee shops, where you pay for the time and not for the coffee, has proved popular in Russia. Ziferblat is one of a Russian chain. Only time will tell if the British accept the idea. I’d like to try it at least once. Who knows — I might even start writing my own novel. If coffee shops are good enough for JK Rowling to spend quality time in, why can’t I?
46. Why do people usually go to coffee shops?
A. To write books. B. To spend their money.
C. To finish some office work. D. To drink a cup of coffee and relax.
47. What does the underlined phrase “the item” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The clock. B. The cup. C. The magazine. D. The bill.
48. The Ziferblat coffee shop will charge for .
A. the coffee people drink
B. the food people bring to the shop
C. the time people spend in the shop
D. the use of the Internet through wi-fi
49. What attracts customers most in the Ziferblat coffee shop?
A. Good service. B. Things that cost nothing.
C. The atmosphere in the shop. D. Delicious coffee and cookies.
50. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The Ziferblat coffee shop is very popular with the British.
B. The writer is in favour of the idea of the Ziferblat coffee shop.
C. The Ziferblat coffee shop is the only one of its kind in the world.
D. The writer encourages people to write novels in the Ziferblat coffee shop.

Various people have various reactions towards public transport. Some love it, some hate it and others have no choice but to use it. If everyone could own their own cars and drive themselves anywhere they wanted, we would have more traffic jams on our roads. This is why public transport becomes important. Although getting good and comfortable public transport may be a bit troublesome, it’ll save you lots of money in the long run.
The use of trains is a common way of traveling in the UK. This is especially so for people traveling from London to Paris. The most common trains that are used are owned by the Eurostar Train Service. There are about 20 Eurostar trains that leave London every day heading for Paris. The good thing is that the trains take about 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach their destination.
Many people in London prefer to take trains to Paris. They consider traveling by train one of the safer methods of traveling on the ground. Car or bus accidents happen on a daily basis on the roads. It’s rare to hear of train accidents. More importantly, a train has to undergo many safety checks before it’s released for service.
Trains in London are quite spacious and provide comfort for their customers. You’ll find that some of the trains have tables where people can work. Some of them even provide power plugs to charge laptops or mobile phones.
It’s faster to travel by a train compared to a bus or even a car. When you travel with a car or a bus, you’ll have to regularly slow down for various reasons including speed limit and traffic jams. However, when traveling by train, the speed is almost constant and there is no traffic jam on the rail track.

Dick Clark, entertainment pioneer, died at age 82. He suffered a heart attack and died in Santa Monica, California on April 18th, 2012.
Clark wasn’t a singer or musician, but he was famous in rock and roll. In the 1950s and 1960s, his afternoon television show, American Bandstand, was a daily program for teens across the country and it changed the way the Americans listened to pop music.
Clark hit the airwaves before he left high school. His career began in the mailroom of a radio station run by his father and uncle. Soon he was on the air. He continued to work as a DJ through college, and returned to the small, family-run station after graduation. One year later, in 1952, he hit the “big time,” moving to WFIL in Philadelphia. At that time, WFIL also owned a television station that had an afternoon teen dance show called Bandstand, and in some years Clark became the regular host of that program.
Later, renamed American Bandstand, the show became a part of network’s lineup (阵容) from 1957 to 1987. In 1963, Clark moved to Hollywood, where he produced some television programs. Some of the shows were music related, but many were game shows and award shows.
In 1972, Clark launched Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and watching the show every December 31 was soon a yearly tradition for the Americans. Clark continued to host the show until 2004, when he suffered a stroke (中风) that left him struggling to speak. But a year later, Clark was back and though his speech was sometimes still difficult to understand, many praised his bravery.

Today I received a phone call from a former member of our courses earlier this year. His name is Ray Steers. He called to tell us a story that happened last Thursday. Here is the story.
Last Thursday night, a young man suffered heart failure on the football field in Portmarnock Centre. A security guard asked me to take action as he knew I was a first aider. I rushed to the scene and discovered that the man had no breathing.
I immediately started CPR (心肺复苏术). My friend John heard the news and followed me. We kept everyone away, including the man’s dad who was trying to hold him. I started CPR and the shock was given. The man responded but was not conscious (有意识的). I continued performing CPR while John gave more shocks to the man. Then we put him in recovery position. The CPR kept blood and oxygen to his brain and the shocks restarted his heart.
The man is now alive and well. His dad told me it was the best Christmas present that he could have wished for. The man we saved is of the same age as my own son. I was so happy for his dad.
This is an amazing story. It makes us really proud that we trained Ray twice in the last 2 years. We are very proud of Ray and hope that this story underlines the need that everybody in this country should be trained in first aid. If you are interested in joining a CPR course, please call us or visit our website for more details.

A. To tell us how to perform CPR on others.
B. To show that danger can occur to us anytime.
C. To encourage more people to take their first-aid courses.
D. To share a story that he heard from a former member of the courses.

Many common sayings are familiar to us. However, what did they really mean when they were first used? Look at the following to find out.
clear as a bell
Now, it is used to mean something that can be understood without difficulty. Back then? Before the time of loudspeakers (扩音器), church bells were used to inform a village or town of danger, death or something important. These church bells were big and their sounds carried long distances so that they could be heard from faraway farms. The sounds were loud and clear — clear as a bell.
rain cats and dogs
This sounds silly. How can cats and dogs be rained from the sky?Okay, they can’t be rained from the sky, but they can fall down from slippery (滑的) roofs. In Middle-aged England, these animals used to live on the roofs of houses. When it rained heavily, the roofs would become slippery and these animals would fall onto the ground below. So now this saying means raining heavily.
saved by the bell
This phrase is often used in classes where students are “saved” from answering difficult questions by the school bell. Its beginning was quite fearful. Hundreds of years ago in England, there was a fear of being buried alive. Maybe because medicine wasn’t as developed as it is today, it was difficult to tell if someone was really gone forever. To make sure someone who was buried alive could be saved, a little bell was tied to the person’s hand. This way, if he woke up underground, the grave keepers would hear the bell and save him.

D. They were fond of walking on slippery roofs.
41. In the past, a little bell was tied to the hand of a dead person in the UK for the purpose of .
A. letting people know he was dead
B. preventing him from feeling lonely underground
C. making it possible to save him if he woke up

B. The modern meanings of some old sayings.
C. Some customs in England hundreds of years ago.
D. Different occasions on which some common sayings are used.

To me, everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find, it does exist.
One sunny afternoon in 1953, we went out to the school’s playground for our gym class. The teacher taught us various track and field events. I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin (标枪). Finally, when everyone had a chance to throw, the longest throw went about 30 yards. Now it was my turn. I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let it go. I watched as the javelin took off. As it went past the 50-yard mark, it was still going. Then people began cheering. Nobody could believe what little Orowitz had just done.
The very next day I began practicing with it, and every day that summer —for six hours or more — I would throw it in a nearby schoolyard. With an eye to the Olympics, I continued to work out until one day I could go into a college. But not warming up properly, I tore some tissues in my left shoulder, so I gave up my dream of attending the Olympics.
Several years later, a co-worker, who was a hopeful actor, asked for help in learning his part. When I began reading the script (剧本), the same kind of fascination that took hold of me when I picked up the javelin appeared. Immediately I attended an acting school. That led to small parts in movies, which at last led me to another area — directing.
I feel strongly that we must keep our minds open; we can’t let ourselves be discouraged or depressed when the talent doesn’t readily appear. Yet when it does, we must be prepared to get hold of it right away.
43. What did we know about the writer in 1953?
A. He found his true talent.
B. He was bad at all the subjects.
C. Many of his classmates didn’t like him.
D. He decided to choose a career in acting.
44. Why did the writer give up his dream of attending the Olympics?
A. Because he didn’t get prepared.
B. Because he was more interested in acting.
C. Because he got injured in the left shoulder.
D. Because he lost interest in throwing the javelin.
45. When the writer wrote the text, he was probably a(n) .
A. teacher B. actor C. director D. athlete
46. What doesn’t the writer probably agree?
A. Everyone has a talent although it’s hard to find it sometimes.
B. The joy of finding something that one can do makes one try his best.
C. One should be patient and active even if the talent doesn’t appear.
D. One can find his true talent only after suffering some failures.
D
You may have received CPR training some time ago, but could you remember the proper technique in an emergency? Do you know what to do in the event of an earthquake? A new study shows that people often do not remember things they have seen hundreds of times.
In the study, 54 people were asked to write down the location of the fire extinguishers (灭火器) near their offices. While many have worked in their offices for years and have passed the bright red extinguishers several times a day, only 24% knew the answer. Many of them were surprised that they had never noticed them.
“If I ask you to draw the front of a dime (一角硬币) or the front of a dollar bill from memory, how well could you do that?” asks Alan Castel, a professor from UCLA. “You’ve seen it so many times, but you probably haven’t paid much attention to it.” Castel says not noticing things isn’t necessarily bad, particularly when those things are not important in your daily life. But with safety information, such as knowing where fire extinguishers are, being prepared can, of course, be very useful.
A few months later, the office workers were asked to take the same test again. All of them performed well this time. “We don’t notice something if we’re attending to something else,” says Castel. “Fire extinguishers are bright red and very conspicuous, but we’re almost blind to them until they become relevant (相关的).”
Castel also stresses that making errors during training was useful. As with the fire extinguisher exercise, errors can teach us that we don’t know something well and need to pay more attention in order to memorize them. It’s good if errors happen during a training and not during an event where you need the information. That’s part of the learning process.
47. What does the writer want to prove by giving the example of a dime?
A. It is a coin of the least value in the US.
B. The front design is different from the back one.
C. Most of us can draw something quite well from memory.
D. We may ignore something that we have seen many times.
48. According to the text, we will pay attention to things .
A. that are related to us B. that we often walk by
C. that are in front of us D. that we have seen for long
49. The underlined word “conspicuous” in Paragraph 4 probably means “ ”.
A. dangerous B. expensive C. obvious D. heavy
50. From the last paragraph, we can infer that .
A. training is a process to make errors
B. wrong information in training is harmful
C. it is natural to make errors in training
D. errors in training are a chance to learn

Fever isn’t an illness but it’s a sign of some underlying complications (并发症) in the body, which may become worse if medical attention isn’t given to the person suffering from it. The normal body temperature for a healthy person is 98.6°F. This doesn’t mean that our body temperature is exactly 98.6°F, every time we measure it. Basically, body temperature depends on various factors and varies from person to person. Food, clothing, environment and exercise, all can change body temperature.
So, generally, if your body temperature is between 99°F and 100°F, there’s only a possibility of fever. However, if the temperature goes beyond 100°F, it can surely be called fever. Low-grade fevers range between 100°F and 102°F, approximately. Any fever above 103°F is considered serious and medical measures are necessary.
Breaking a fever is a must, as it can cause severe pains in the body and may make the person weak physically. If you’re suffering from fever, you can try various home remedies (治疗法) to break a fever, besides taking medicine. For example, it’s advisable to drink plenty of fluid, so that you never get dehydrated (脱水), especially in case of high fever. So drink enough water every day. Tea is also advised by many medical experts. There are various vitamins and minerals in vegetables and fruit juices that will help your body during high fever.
When suffering from fever, it’s necessary to sleep with the doors and windows open so that cool breeze (微风) in the night can enter the room and help you cool down. Also you should be dressed in thick clothes during the fever, so the fever can be lessened.
Stress, lots of physical activities and work pressure can lead to tiredness. Thus, it’s more important to give rest to your body so that the body can cool down.

Earth Day is held annually on April 22. It encourages people to organize events to help improve the environment, both locally and nationally.
At Oliver Street School, in Newark, New Jersey, Earth Day celebrations began early this year. In March, a group of students from a STEM class won the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest for creating a device to help reduce water pollution. After presenting their creation to a group of judges, the class was awarded $140,000 in Samsung technology for their school.
The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest began in 2009. Each year, the contest has a different theme or challenge. This year, Samsung asked students to seek a solution to a problem by applying the values of STEM —Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. And the students were judged on how they applied the values of STEM to find creative ways to make a difference.
At Oliver Street School, the students in James Intrabartolo’s STEM class decided to find a solution to a problem right outside their front door. After noticing rubbish collecting in a sewer (下水道) near the school, the class was inspired to create a drain (排水沟) cover that can stop garbage from entering the waterways. Using wooden panels (镶板) attached to a large metal box, the cover is designed to catch and filter waste from the drains before it causes further water pollution.
After being informed that they were among 15 finalists in the competition, Intrabartolo’s class presented a video for their creation. The students explained how they identified a real-life problem without having to go far from home and then found a way to solve it. Oliver Street School was among five winners in the competition, taking home the grand prize for the school.
