Donald was shaken by thunder on the bed before he could count “one thousand one”. Then he heard the smoke alarm go off. He went downstairs quickly to investigate. When he opened the door to the basement (地下室), flames exploded out.
Donald fled (逃) back upstairs to call 911 but the phone didn’t work. When he tried to go downstairs, he was stopped by a wall of flames. He had to use a towel to cover his mouth. His house was three miles off the main road and so well hidden by trees that Donald knew calling for help would be useless. Actually, he didn’t even try to do that.
About one mile away lived Donald’s closest neighbor, Jeremie. When he heard some sounds, Jeremie jumped out of bed, holding a phone and a flashlight, and went towards the noise. He dialed 911 the instant he saw the flames. When he came close to the house, Jeremie knew he’d better wait until rescuers came. But he didn’t want Donald to die in the fire.
Without hesitation, he rushed into the house. He shouted, “Donald, where are you?” Then he had to run outside to catch his breath. After one more attempt, he gave up and circled around back. He saw Donald on the second-floor balcony, but there was no way to get to him. Suddenly, he noticed a ladder. He dragged it over to the balcony and pulled Donald down just when the second floor fell down.
Within the year, Donald built a new two-story wood house at the site of the fire. Jeremie and Donald don’t run into each other regularly, but Donald knows that if he ever needs help, Jeremie will be there.

Like many grandparents, Irving Winson regularly looks after his grandchildren. So when the Red Cross put on a special child-centered course for older carers, he couldn’t wait to apply for it.
Irving, who has six grandchildren aged under 12, was just one of many grandparents attending the busy first aid session in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire. He said, “My wife is a nurse, so I’ve always relied on her to act in an emergency. But there are occasions when she’s out and I’m left looking after the kids by myself. Having some first aid skills means I’ll know what to do if anything bad happens.”
The everyday first aid course covered basic skills such as dealing with burns, fractures (骨折) and bleeding injuries. It also covered what to do if a child or baby started choking. Irving said, “Recently, my youngest grandson, who’s just 12 months old, swallowed a small part of a toy. Luckily, he didn’t choke and was still able to breathe, but he couldn’t eat and had a strange cough for a while. Finally, the doctors removed it. However, it made me think ‘what if that had happened when I was looking after him and he had started to choke?’ Before taking this course I wouldn’t have known what to do.”
Jo Riches, a first aid trainer, said, “We felt it was important to hold a course specifically for grandparents as more and more are responsible for caring for their grandchildren while parents return to work.” Irving said, “I took a first aid course many years ago, but the techniques have changed over the years. This one was so easy and made it simple to master the key skills. I feel I could respond to an emergency now if I have to.”

She has wiped your nose, packed countless lunches, driven you to piano lessons, cleaned your favorite jeans, seen you through college and given you sound advice more times than you can count. On Mother’s Day — the one day a year that is truly about “mom”, don’t take her out to a crowded, noisy and overpriced restaurant. Show your mom that you really put some thought into her special day and host brunch (早午餐) in her honor.
There’s no need for your hands to start sweating from fear of standing near a hot stove, your face covered in flour and smoke alarms going off in the distance. Brunch can be as easy as you’d like it to be.
The beauty of brunch is that you can offer both breakfast and lunch selections, so there’s usually something for everyone. Popular brunch selections include coffee cakes or quick bread such as banana bread. A lovely fruit salad can quickly be made by mixing together two or more of the following: strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe (甜瓜), watermelon, and mango.
Food is obviously the major part of brunch, but there are nice decorative things you can add to help make the occasion more memorable. Decorate the room or table with photos of mom with her kids or grandkids. A simple, fresh bunch of flowers will liven up (使活跃) any table and it will also make a great gift for mom as a memento of her wonderful brunch.

Your college roommates will probably be the first people you will share a home with besides your family. 16 You probably have responsibilities that you know you have to shoulder, but you don’t have to worry about things like rent, bills and other issues. If you can deal with the most common roommate problems in an effective way, you may end up with friends for life.
● Food
Are you planning on sharing food or having separate supplies? 17 If you decide to have your own separate food, split up (分开) the refrigerator and cabinet space. Sharing food can save you some money because you will probably buy less of each item and won’t have to throw away much food if it goes bad.
● Bills
18 It is important that you and your roommates find a method for paying the bills. One way to do this is to have each roommate be responsible for a separate utility (公用事业) bill. That way, one person isn’t stuck with all the financial (财务的) responsibility.
● Guests
College roommates should always have a guest policy. Before you move in together, sit down and have a discussion about your expectations as roommates. 19 You are probably going to have to set some basic rules if your roommate is a party animal. Set specific rules that you can both agree on. Write down the rules and stick to them.
● Noise
If your roommate is trying to study for a final exam, he or she probably won’t appreciate you making your heavy metal music in the next room. 20 Sharing a living space is all about compromises (折中), so be prepared to make some sacrifices (牺牲). Too much noise can put all of you into unnecessary trouble.
A. Nothing causes arguments like money does.
B. Living at home with parents is very different.
C. Are you someone who values quietness and privacy (隐私)?
D. Some of the biggest problems come from disagreements about cleaning.
E. Set rules about how late music can be played and how loud the television can be.

This morning I was doing my homework when I heard a loud scream. I hurried to my brother, only to find that he was scratched by a cat. Because his scratch wound was bleeding, I first applied pressure to the area with a clean towel until the bleeding stopped. After that I cleaned his wound with soap water and held it under running water for at least five minutes. Finishing this, I dried his wound and covered it with a clean cloth. For further treatment, I sent him to the nearest hospital. The doctor praised me and I felt proud. After all, I can help a person who suddenly gets inured using my knowledge of first aid.

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
Dear Santa,
What do I ask this year? I have read each ad carefully in my mailbox, and looked through the colorful ads in the newspaper. There are so many lovely things, but I need nothing.
I realize this as I walk up the hill on my strong legs. I can hear the air fill my lungs. I feel the cold on my cheeks. I smell the smoke of the fire that warms my home. I see the snow-covered mountains and the small river dotted with fat geese.
I need nothing. There are people who love me. There are people who forgive my sometimes bad temper and who touch me with loving hands. There are neighbors who smile in the store. There are shopkeepers who tolerate me when I don’t have enough money. There are kind faces in public places.
There is a fat cat who often slides into my garage. Dogs and other cats share my hearth (炉床); I love to feel their fur with my feet. There are hawks that teach their young how to fly, right there behind my house. There are deer that wander into my yard and smell apples.
Green beans, tomatoes, peas and carrots color my kitchen. And a full bucket (桶) of hand tools and neatly dried seeds promise next year’s rich harvest. I need nothing.
Today I discovered a hole in my jeans. I felt the December air flow down my leg. How powerful the hand is that sweeps the wind along the mountains! Santa, dear old soul, just give me another day like this one in my life.

I want to become a journalist and I wonder what makes a good journalist. In order to find the answer, I talked to Mary Harte who worked with the BBC for over 20 years as a journalist.
“You’ve got to have the interest. If you don’t like it, you will not persist because journalism is a very difficult job,” Mary said.
Out of experience Mary told me that it was very important for a journalist to watch and talk to people. She said, “What a journalist does is painting a little picture of a story. The information has to be accurate. Therefore, you really have to be watching and listening.”
Mary also emphasized (强调) the importance of experience. “It is important to collect as many skills as possible to be able to stand out of the crowd. A lot of the skills come from experience, so you won’t walk in the street and be a good journalist. You will be a good journalist because you’ve done it long enough,” she said.
Mary said, “You will not get a job handed to you. You will have to be prepared to put in long hours; you will have to be prepared to ring people, and you will have to be prepared to have no money for quite a while. In a word, you will have to work hard for it. Then it gets to the stage where you love your job and you think ‘Why is somebody paying me to do something that I really love?’”
From what an experienced journalist said, I learn that it is not just about the skills, but also the passion required to work in the field of journalism.

At 91, Philip Theil lives in a century-old house in Seattle’s University District and that’s the way he wants to keep it. “As far as I’m concerned, I would not like to leave this place. Living in a group is something I couldn’t tolerate. I’d kill myself before I have to do that.” Many elderly Americans, who can no longer manage on their own, spend their final years in a nursing home. However, the vast majority of seniors would prefer to live in their own homes as long as possible.
Theil says he and his wife manage pretty well right now. But the couple can feel their advancing age and realize they will soon need more help with basic household chores, like changing the light bulb at the top of the stairs.
“To change that tube, I have to bring in a stepladder (折梯) and put it partly on the landing and partly on the stairs and climb up,” Theil says. “It’s frightening.” In the old days, the Theils could ask their children to help them. But those young helpers have grown up and gone. “We have kids and we call them sometimes, but one lives in Munich, Germany, another lives in London and the third lives in New York,” Theil says. “They’re not going to visit us for a weekend.”
So the Theils would like to join a virtual (虚拟的) village, which provides a local network of volunteers helping the elderly people in place. They help seniors with anything from transportation to home repairs and dog walking. The concept came into being in Boston a decade ago and has since grown into a national movement. In most cases, the villages charge a membership (会员) fee from about $100 to more than $1,000 per year. Once you’re a member, some of the services are free.

Parents would remember their own first experience of leaving home. 16 In remembering their own experience, parents next have to consider the experience they want to provide their son or daughter with.

My mom just bought me a new bike. Since my cousin Mary didn’t have a bike with her, she walked next to me. I thought that Mary would jump on the luggage carrier (行李架) over the back tire when I was riding. Mom knew exactly what I was thinking. “Don’t ride the bike with Mary on the back,” she said. “It’s too dangerous. You could kill yourself. Take turns.”
I nodded, but I was thinking I could handle this. A few minutes later, I turned right to a wide road. “Jump on the back,” I told Mary. I rode fast, laughing as the wind blew through our hair. It was exciting, until the handlebar (车把) started shaking. The front tire dropped into a drain (下水道) and I fell off the bike, still holding the handlebar.
My face, hands, and knees crashed into the pavement. The pain in my mouth was unbearable, and I tasted blood. I turned towards Mary who was on the ground, holding her knee and crying. Seconds later, it seemed that my mom’s car stopped next to us. I wanted Mom to say, “Oh, my poor sweetheart. Let me hug you and everything will be fine.”
However, my mom only said, “What have you done to your face? Vanessa, look at what you’ve done!” Mom wasn’t the gentle “I love you, sweetie” type.
Sometimes, I thought Mom had no mercy. But in her own way, she was holding me tighter than I could understand — she was teaching me the lesson I needed. “You did it — deal with it and learn from it. One day, the consequences (后果) will be greater and I won’t be there to help you. Think it out, Vanessa.”

When Paul Cave was 19, his father-in-law told him how, on March 19, 1932, he had queued (排队) up for two days at Wynyard Station so he could buy the first rail ticket to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In 1985, two days before he died, he gave that ticket to Cave — ticket number 00001. “It created a fascination (酷爱) with the bridge that I have to this day,” says Cave. And it started him on a long journey towards another Harbour Bridge first.
Cave came up with a simple but daring idea — lease (租用) the bridge from the government and allow ordinary people to climb Australia’s greatest icon. “I thought it would take two years,” says Cave, 63. “What appeared like a simple job turned into some very complex activities. But in business, you just have to keep going — it’s about having self-belief.” Indeed, it took him nine years and ten months to convince the NSW government to allow his dream to be a reality. “Six years were wasted dealing with some very restrictive officials,” says Cave. They threw difficulty after difficulty in his path with doubts over the safety of the climbers and the motorists below — the list went on and on.
Through it all, Cave held the ticket tightly. It was a constant reminder of why, to Cave, this fight was worth winning. Finally, in 1995, came the breakthrough (突破) he’d worked for — a letter arrived from WorkCover, the state’s occupational health and safety insurer, backing his idea.
Since opening on October 1, 1998, over 1.8 million people have climbed the 1,439 steps to the top of the bridge, making BridgeClimb a $50-million-a-year success and a major international tourist attraction.

B. you should have self-belief even faced with great difficulty

A habitat is a natural area where wildlife lives undisturbed. Most animals and plants have become endangered not because they have been killed on purpose but because their habitats are being destroyed.
Human activities have changed or destroyed habitats for thousands of years. The natural habitats in almost every country in the world have been affected in some way. Let us take Britain as an example. Nowadays most of the British countryside consists of fields of grass grown for cattle and sheep or crops for humans. If you had lived about a thousand years ago, the countryside would have looked very different for most of Britain was covered with forest.
Now there are only small areas of woodland across the country, one of the largest areas being the New Forest in Hampshire. Throughout the centuries humans have steadily (持续地) cut down the trees to make room for the human population which has increased greatly particularly during the past 200 years or so. The trees have been replaced by houses, factories, schools, roads, farmland etc. Hedgerows (灌木篱笆) which were planted by humans as boundaries (界限) around fields have replaced woodlands.
As you may imagine, the great loss of habitats has affected the wildlife that lives in them. Large animals such as the Brown Bear and the Auroch became extinct in Britain during the 10th century mainly due to destruction (破坏) of their forest habitats. Other British species of animals and plants have become extinct during the last few hundred years and many more are endangered today. Although many organizations are working to protect wildlife, natural habitats are still being destroyed.
12. The text mainly tells us .
A. what a habitat is
B. how to protect wildlife
C. habitat destruction makes animals endangered
D. how to prevent the environment from being destroyed
13. According to the text, animals are endangered mainly because .
A. people kill wild animals on purpose
B. the environment is seriously polluted
C. humans haven’t worked to protect them
D. the human population has increased greatly
14. We can learn from the text that .
A. the New Forest is the largest woodland in the world
B. the Brown Bear has been extinct for many years in Britain
C. humans destroyed natural habitats mainly by growing crops
D. humans planted hedgerows to make home for cattle and sheep
15. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A. Setting up reserves is the best way to protect animals.
B. We can hardly stop animals from being endangered.
C. Things will become better for wild animals in Britain.
D. Human activities began to affect wildlife 200 years ago.
