Numbers in different countries may have different meanings. In China, some people think that some numbers bring them .Take "8" for example, the Chinese pronunciation of the number "8" has almost the 2 sound as that of the Chinese character"发[fa:]", which means making a fortune. So, many Chinese people spend a lot of 3 to get their telephone numbers or car numbers to include this number "8".They believe without 4. doubt that the number will bring
them money.
5 others don't believe that numbers have anything to do with good luck. They think such an idea is only an ignorant(愚昧的)and superstitious(迷信的) belief. A number is one thing, and good luck is 6 . They will ask,"7 can you ever have any good luck simply because of some lucky numbers, even if you don't work hard, don't have good opportunities and don't get along
well with the people around you "
As for me,I 8 with the latter(后者). Clearly, lucky numbers are only a kind of superstition. Perhaps it holds true for some cases, but often it does not. Numbers can 9 bring good luck to a person at all and our fortune is in our own hands. So, everyone can have a good fortune only if he
tries his best. Let's always remember "Opportunities are only for the 10 mind" and "No pains,
1
no gains."

Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly(蝴蝶).11. Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is
unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn't struggle(挣扎/奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can't fly!
12 Similarly(类似的), the challenges(挑战) of life bring out the best in young people and
make the fly.
When people are young, meeting and overcoming(克服) challenges will make them strong and
ready to face life. When we look at successful people,13. One famous businessman, who
now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only
twenty. 14. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and
overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.
Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage(鼓励) young people to face challenges. They might organize(组
织) some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing.
camping, volunteer work and so on. 15. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young
people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become
successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.
A.His father's death forced him to mature(成熟)fast. B.The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis(蛹). C. We see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. D. The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. E. These activities are good for us. F. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life.

World famous physicist( 物 理 学 家 ) Stephen Hawking died peacefully at his home in
Cambridge on March 14th, 2018.
Hawking was born in Oxford, England on January 8h, 1942. He went to school in a small city near London. As he himself admitted, he wasn't very serious about studying. At the age of 21, Hawking noticed something wrong with him. He had a bad illness that stopped him from moving and talking. He couldn't communicate except by blinking(眨眼). He chose his words from the screen, which were then spoken by a voice synthesizer(音响合成器)."I've had the disease for most of my life," Hawking once said,
"Yet it has not stopped me from being successful at my work."
Although Hawking was a disabled man, he made great achievements. He received many
awards and prizes for his work, including the Albert Einstein Award--the highest achievement in

With the development of economics(经济), the problem of the left--behind children(留守儿童) has become a serious social problem. More and more people have realized we should do
something to help them.
The biggest problem is that the children are all hungry for the love from their parents. Many of them can just get a call or a letter from their parents half a year, a year or even several years. So some children can't remember what their parents look like. When they meet their own troubles,
they have no one to talk with. Nobody gives them enough care.
Because of being too far away from their parents, the left--behind children's study is the second biggest problem. From a survey about their study, only two percent of the children get good results, while ten percent of them are common and eighty--eight percent of them are poor.
What a pity!
There are also many other problems of the left--behind children, such as having no ability to
protect themselves, unhealthy lifestyles, spending too much pocket money and too much time on
4
the Internet and so on.
In a word, to solve all the problems of the left--behind children needs the government, families

Zombies(僵尸) are real! You meet them every day on the sidewalk. They walk slowly, with
their heads down and they will not look at you. They are living in a different world, a world of the
mobile phone!
Many people are complaining(抱怨)about these mobile phone zombies because they walk slowly, making it difficult for other people to use the sidewalk. Chongqing and a few other cities have come up with an idea to try to solve the problem. They've divided up sidewalks into lanes(线 路):one lane for mobile--zombies and one lane for everyone else. The experiment hasn't worked
out too well, since most mobile--zombies don't even notice the lanes.
I have another suggestion for the problem. In Shanghai, we have blind paths. They are made of small raised tiles(凸起的瓷砖) that help blind people follow a straight line. Perhaps the same way could be used for mobile--zombies. A lane with a rough surface would allow people to concentrate on their mobile phones and still know they are walking in a straight line. Of course,I
have a further suggestion. At the end of the lane would be a large hole where all the
5
mobile--zombies would disappear into the center of the earth!
Well, I don't think my suggestion is going to be taken, but I don't think special lanes for mobile--zombies will work, either. I think it's just a better idea to remind( 提 醒 )people that sidewalks are shared space and they should think of others when they are using their mobile
phones.
31.According to the passage, who are mobile phone zombies
A. The people who always look here and there on the road.
B. The people who always play with mobile phones on the road.
C. The people who hate using mobile phones when they are walking on the road.
32.Why has not the lane for mobile--zombies in Chongqing worked out well
A. Because it is too expensive to walk on the lanes.
B. Because there are so few lanes in Chongqing.
C. Because few mobile--zombies notice the lanes in fact.
33.The underlined word "rough" in Paragraph 3means " " in Chinese.
A. 粗糙的 B. 光滑的 C. 漂亮的
34.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. Shanghai has also built lanes for the mobile--zombies.
B. The writer's suggestion for the mobile--zombies was taken.
C. Mobile--zombies should think of others on the road.
