One afternoon, when I was cleaning the garage in our new house, I noticed a piece of carpet sticking out of the ceiling. I fetched a ladder and reached the ceiling. There I saw a metal container that I recognized as a World War II ammo (弹药) box; my grandfather used to store tools in ammo boxes on his farm. I opened the box and was surprised at what I saw —several rolls of money tied up in orange thread. I found $800. My God! I found another seven boxes, plus two big black bags also full of rolls of money. In all, about $45,000.
My first thought was that this was a blessing from God. But I knew I should return the money to the former owner, David, instead of satisfying all my desires. So I called him and asked him to drop by.
However, he was shocked not about the money but about what I did. He said he had recently inherited (继承) the house and it must have been his dad who had hidden the money. What made him do it? I think he did it for his children.
There were balls of that orange thread still hanging on the wall of the garage when we moved in. I used them to tie up Christmas presents last year for my kids. I hope it reminded my kids of the gift greater than money that my wife and I gave them — the honesty.

Here are some tips on how to keep you, your belongings (财物) and your money safe during travel. After all, it’d be a shame to spend all the time and research finding the best price for your trip, only to lose your cash and credit cards to a thief.
★ Don’t show others that you are not a native.
You’re a tourist. You know that, but you don’t want everybody else to know that. Don’t unfold your big map on a busy corner. Don’t ask strangers on the street for directions. Learn your route ahead of time, and step into a business for directions whenever possible. Avoid flashing your guidebook around, or publicly referring to your language dictionary when traveling abroad.
★ Keep your friends close and your money closer.
A lone traveler equals easy pickings for an experienced criminal. If you are traveling alone, try to hide that fact. Stick with groups whenever possible and keep information-sharing with taxi drivers and the like to a minimum (最少量).
Another thing you don’t want to advertise: where you keep your money. A fanny pack (腰包) may be convenient, but it means “I’m not from around here!” If you have a purse, keep it close to your body, preferably under an item of clothing like a jacket or sweater so that thieves can’t steal it. Be sure your wallet is in a securely fastened pocket. Or go like 007 with a hidden money belt. How cool is that?
★ Be careful, even in your hotel room.
Never ever blindly answer a knock at your door. If the knocker identifies (确认) himself as a hotel employee, call the front desk to confirm. Always make sure your hotel door completely closes.
Don’t leave your valuables lying around when you leave for the day.
8. Why shouldn’t tourists wear a fanny pack?
A. Because it can’t hide money.
B. Because it is not convenient.
C. Because it shows that they are not local.
D. Because it can’t be hidden under their jacket.
9. Why does the author mention 007’s money belt?
A. To persuade readers to learn from 007.
B. To persuade readers to buy the belt worn by 007.
C. To persuade readers to hide money in their belt.
D. To persuade readers not to show others where they keep money.
10. This text is intended for .
A. thieves B. tourists
C. hotel managers D. language learners
11. We can learn from the text that .
A. when traveling abroad, we shouldn’t open our language dictionary in public
B. we can leave our money at the hotel when traveling abroad
C. we should go to open the door if we hear a knock at it
D. we should not talk with taxi drivers abroad
D
Fast-food giant, McDonald’s, said that they would cut out excess calories in their kids’ menu choices. McDonald’s will reduce the amount of chips (炸薯条) in Happy Meals and will also include sliced apple “dippers” in every meal. McDonald’s says it will still include the ever-popular toys with each meal.
“We are going to pay attention to how we can introduce more food groups such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains,” said Cindy Goody, McDonald’s senior director of nutrition.
After getting much of the blame for childhood obesity, fast-food chains, especially McDonald’s, began selling more nutritious menu items such as oatmeal (燕麦粥) and salads. But the restaurant was most blamed for its marketing (市场营销) which is often aimed at young children. Some cities, such as San Francisco, California, have banned (禁止) toys from all kids’ meals that didn’t meet strict nutritional rules for fat, salt and sugar content because the prizes attracted more children to the fast food.
McDonald’s felt public pressure to change their offerings. The company has reduced chips in every meal. This decreases calorie content by about 20 percent, which means a new Happy Meal is less than 600 calories. In the past, the unhealthiest Happy Meal consisted of a cheeseburger, chips and one percent chocolate milk, which contained 700 calories and 27 grams of fat.
“It’s a good first step,” said Kelle Louailler, executive director of Corporate Accountability International. His group watches over companies. “However, we have yet to focus on the problem: its brand marketing to kids. And so long as burgers, chips and soda offerings to kids, along with toys, remain central to that brand, health professionals (专家) will continue to call for the marketing to stop.”
12. The underlined word “excess” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A. enough B. extra C. entire D. expensive
13. We can infer from the text that in McDonald’s the apple “dippers” is a kind of food that .
A. is most popular with customers B. contains apples and whole grains
C. is a lot healthier D. is high in calories
14. McDonald’s will make some changes in meals because of .
A. the high prices of fruits and vegetables
B. the change of children’s eating habits
C. the pressure from the public
D. some strict nutritional rules
15. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us?
A. The problems that McDonald’s is facing.
B. Some changes the McDonald’s has made.
C. Its marketing is blamed by some people.
D. Customers dislike its new menu.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Having a picky (挑剔的) eater in the house can turn every mealtime into a major battle. Nearly 85% of parents say they have a child who is or has been picky about food. In fact, picky eaters aren’t limited to the United States. 16 If you’re annoyed (生气的) with your child’s food refusals, try some of the following tips to encourage him or her to form healthy eating habits:
Small changes produce big rewards. 17 Once these changes become routine (例行的), then change another couple of items. Within a year, you’ll have improved your child’s diet.
18 By making small adjustments over time, your child’s taste buds will adjust until you can finally replace the old type with a healthier choice. Increase the amount of the healthier ingredients slowly, until the entire sandwich has been remade into a healthy lunch.
Give kids a choice. Routinely serve two types of fruit with lunch and two vegetables at dinner. 19 You can also engage your child’s decision-making skills by offering several healthy choices. For example, ask if he or she would like his or her carrots raw or cooked.
Choose wise rules. Sure, it would be great to ban fast food, sugar, and soda from your child’s life, but commercials, play dates, class parties, and other situations present unhealthy choices on a daily basis. Strict rules are not the wise way. 20 For example, eat only one treat a day, avoid sugar at breakfast, and try one bite of each dish during mealtimes.
A. Instead, create a few practical rules.
B. Teach and encourage their independence.
C. Create healthier types of favorite foods.
D. It’s typical for kids around the world to prefer a small selection of favorite foods.
E. So it’s important to teach them how to make good food choices.
F. Then you can double the chance your child will eat at least one.
G. Begin by slowly making a few small changes toward a more nutritious diet.

Thank you for your hard work during the last few weeks. We all like you very much. I am writing on behalf of the students in our class to give you some suggestions.
To begin with, we feel it is a little too fast in class recently. Maybe this is good for the top students in our class. However, some of us can’t keep up with you now.
