第二部分 阅读理解 (共两节,共50分)
第一节(共20小题;每小题2分,共40分)
A
This story happened during World War Ⅱ. It was a fierce battle. Many soldiers had lost their lives. Horror gripped (紧抓) Jim’s heart because he saw that his lifelong friend was left behind in a trench (战壕). Continuous gunfire whizzed over his head. Jim asked the lieutenant (中尉) if he might go out into the “no-man’s-land” between the trenches to bring his fallen friend back.
“You can go,” said the lieutenant, “but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your life away.” Jim looked up. Continuous gunfire was still whizzing over his head, but he had made up his mind. He went out of the trench and moved towards his fallen friend slowly. Amazingly, he managed to reach his friend, put him onto his shoulders and bring him back to their company’s trench. As the two got to the bottom of the trench, the lieutenant checked the wounded soldier, and then looked kindly at Jim.
“I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead and you got shot. You may die, too.” “It was worth it, though, Sir,” said Jim. The lieutenant was confused and asked, “What do you mean? Your friend is dead.” “Yes, Sir,” Jim answered, “but it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive and I had the satisfaction of hearing him saying, ‘Jim…, I knew you’d come.’”

Guilford County Schools’ oldest volunteer, 97-year-old Thurman Haynes, has been chosen as the national winner in the Salute to Senior Service Competition, sponsored (赞助) by Home Instead.
Haynes, a daily volunteer at Haynes-Inman Education Center in Jamestown, was selected from thousands of nominees (被提名者). “Thurman Haynes reminds us all how important it is to celebrate life on a daily basis,” said Kevin Carr in his nomination. “His love he gives others is amazing.”
Haynes has been involved with the school from the start. He sold the school system the land on which Haynes-Inman was built. He can see the school from his home. The school, which opened in August, 2010, educates special-needs students between the ages of 3 and 22. And Haynes knows something about that, too.
His only grandchild, Meredith, had mental and physical disabilities. She died in 1993 shortly before her 21st birthday. The school is named in part for her, the Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center. In her honor, he volunteers more than 80 hours per month at the school.
He is often one of the first to arrive and greet students each school day. He assists them off the bus and ensures they arrive at class safely. Haynes also lends a hand during PE classes, helping students participate in volleyball, jump rope and other activities.
The students and staff at Haynes-Inman held a parade in January in honor of Haynes’ 97th birthday. “Haynes proves age is not important when it comes to making a positive difference to the lives of others,” said Jeff Huber, president of Home Instead. Haynes is among the 62 percent of seniors 68 and older who take part in voluntary work, according to a recent Marist Poll sponsored by Home Instead.
38. What is the main idea of the text?

B. A 97-year-old man is kind to others.
C. More and more seniors do voluntary work.
D. A 97-year-old volunteer wins a national award.
39. Haynes got nominated probably because of .

B. his excellent voluntary service
C. his positive attitude towards life
D. his long work hours per month
40. How does Haynes help the special-needs students?
A. He helps them rebuild their confidence.
B. He drives them to school and back home.
C. He teaches them patiently in PE classes.
D. He treats them kindly with a heart of gold.
41. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Jeff Huber was in charge of Haynes’ birthday parade.
B. The author calls on more seniors to do voluntary work.
C. Volunteering can make the old people live a positive life.
D. Many American seniors devote themselves to voluntary work.

People with different interests and preferences can enjoy themselves through hip-hop culture. It involves spoken words, break-dancing, painting, fashion, lively design, technology and more. Hip-hop is becoming the unofficial music in the education world, as more artists organize school programs, summer camps, and other activities aimed at engaging (使参与) city youth in the classroom through the beliefs in hip-hop culture. Even more and more university teachers — who were once strongly against hip-hop — have joined the group: in the past two decades, hip-hop culture, including hip-hop education, has become an accepted field in universities and the subject of a lot of books.
Hip-hop culture has influenced every piece of American culture and global culture. Teachers must be willing to engage in it because it’s a part of their students’ lives. In that way, teachers can truly be effective in teaching students.
Teachers might at first feel frightened by hip-hop culture, an area in which they might not have previous experience. But a lack of knowledge is actually a blessing; the best trained hip-hop educators have been those that are at the beginning disconnected from the culture. One of the biggest sayings in hip-hop is “keep it real”. If a teacher comes to the classroom and says, “I don’t know hip-hop, but I recognize that it’s your culture and I want to learn,” the kids will teach the teacher, and then the students will be more willing to learn from that educator.
Peer (同龄人) teaching has long been recognized as a powerful way for students to learn and gain confidence in their own abilities. It’s also a useful way of approaching technology in the classroom, where students who love digital technology might know more than their teachers. Thus, teachers and students are put on a more equal basis, with more respect between them — developing an atmosphere where everyone has something to offer for a better educational process.
42. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Some teachers still dislike hip-hop culture.
B. Hip-hop is the most influential music in the world.
C. Hip-hop has become the center of people’s daily life.
D. Hip-hop culture becomes more popular in the education world.
43. According to the text, young people prefer to learn from the teachers who .
A. are fond of music B. show respect for their culture
C. know nothing about their lives D. are willing to teach hip-hop culture

A. Paying more attention to students’ interests.
B. Involving students in teaching certain subjects.
C. Admitting that students know more than teachers.
D. Learning hip-hop culture with advanced technology.
45. Where can we most probably read the text?
A. In the education section of a magazine.
B. In a book on how to learn technology.
C. In a book on how to sing hip-hop songs.
D. In the fashion section of a newspaper.

Why do we always want to go faster when talking about travel? We want our cars, trains and planes to get us to places more quickly. This century, there’s been a rise in high-speed rail travel as people have seen the benefits of this form of transport.
Spain recently joined the railway revolution with its AVE modern high-speed train that has a top speed of 310 kilometres per hour. Its service from Madrid to Barcelona took 20% of passengers away from Spain’s national airline. In Japan, a magnetic train is being developed that will run at 500 kilometres per hour. Britain has one high-speed line from London to France—HS1, but now it is planning to construct a new line called HS2 which will connect London with the north of England. The UK government’s transport secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, says it is essential to make sure that the great cities are actually connected and people get the right benefits.
The idea of fast train travel may appeal but not if it’s going to be built in your backyard. It’s causing disagreement and people are arguing over the benefits and cost of having shorter journey time and less traffic on the roads. John Kelleher, who is a farmer and lives on the site of the new line says that the government is not taking into consideration the amount that HS2 will destroy on its construction and route through the countryside. Some people are worried the financial and environmental cost will be too high to save just half an hour on a journey.
But other countries have shown that high-speed rail is good for the economy. It has helped poorer parts of the country, reduced the need to fly and has made train travel cool. For me, there’s nothing better than drinking a cold beer and watching the world go by from the comfort of a train seat. In fact, if it’s that good, what’s the rush? Maybe I will stick with the slow train.
46. What kind of transport has been more and more popular with travelers in this century?
A. The car. B. The slow train.
C. The plane. D. The high-speed rail.
47. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Patrick McLoughlin is against the construction of HS2.
B. The magnetic train in Japan now runs at a speed of 500 k/h.
C. The high-speed train in Spain has affected the national airline.
D. Britain has built two high-speed lines from London to France.
48. What’s mainly talked about in the third paragraph?
A. The construction of HS2.
B. The popularity of the high-speed rail.
C. The development of the high-speed rail.
D. The disadvantages of the high-speed rail.
49. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. There is no need for people to fly when they travel.
B. John Kelleher lives far away from the new line called HS2.
C. People in poorer places benefit little from the high-speed rail.
D. The author may prefer to choose the slow train while traveling.
50. What’s the main topic of the text?
A. The railway revolution. B. The means of transport.
C. The high-speed rail travel. D. The construction of new lines.

In the past 18 months Omar Khan has driven a Dubai taxi, and passengers have left many things behind—from mobile phones to shopping bags. On Tuesday afternoon, the 26-year-old Pakistani driver’s character was put to the test when he found a briefcase full of money and jewellery.
At the petrol station, while cleaning his taxi, he noticed a case behind the driver’s seat. When he checked to see what was inside, he found 123,700 Saudi Riyals and gold jewellery. Immediately, Mr Khan took the bag and its contents to the Police Station.
“The officers at the station also seemed surprised by what was inside the briefcase. They told me that they would call me when they located the owner of the bag and I’d have to return to check his identity,” Mr Khan said.
Less than an hour later, Mr Khan received the call from the station. He returned to find a 30-year-old businessman from Saudi Arabia, who said he was blown away when he heard the taxi driver had handed his briefcase in. He was very grateful to Mr Khan and gave him Dh500 for his trouble. Mr Khan’s friends were impressed by his returning the money.
Dubai Police were so moved by Mr Khan’s honesty that they held a ceremony in his honor on Wednesday and presented him with a certificate of appreciation for his honesty.
“I’ve never taken a dirham I didn’t earn,” Mr Khan said. “Even if no one else was around to see me, God sees all. Besides, if I had taken them that day, I don’t think I could ever have looked my 2-year-old daughter in the eye. I’m a much happier person with Dh500 that I earned than Dh120,000 that I didn’t.”
