Goa Carnival dates back to almost 500 years ago when Goa was a colony of the Portuguese. When Goa was colonized by the Portuguese, they introduced the carnival to Goa. Picture a wasteland of old computer monitors and TVs, stretching as far as the eye can see. Imagine towers of boxes, all of them filled with broken glass and old electronic devices.
What’s behind the tech trash pile? About ten years ago, major advances were made in computer and television technology. The new electronic products are built with materials that are difficult to recycle. In addition, the new products have decreased the demand for recycled parts from the old monitors and screens.
Experts say there are ways to safely and responsibly solve the tech trash problem. Barbara Kyle is the national leader of the Electronic TakeBack Organization. The organization encourages people to donate their old electronic products to charities or neighbors who will use them. “It’s better for the planet if we keep using an electronic product as long as it keeps working,” Kyle said. “But many times, we stop using it even though it still works because we got a newer product.”
Students can also be a part of the solution. Schools can set up recycling projects to collect used electronic products. They can also work with responsible electronic recyclers to handle their old products. Many electronic factories also provide a return program where consumers can send back the products that they no longer use. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 25 states now have laws that deal with the disposal and recycling of electronic products. Most of these laws require them to pay for the collection and recycling at the end of a product’s life.
Through these various programs and organizations, consumers can reduce tech trash and become part of the solution. When you’re finished with something, bring it for recycling right away because there’s a chance it might be able to be reused. That’s the best conservation of resources.

Trinidad’s carnival is a beautiful example of how carnival can unite the world. For in this small nation, the beliefs and traditions of many cultures have come together; and for a brief five days each year, the whole country forgets their differences to celebrate life.
Like many other nations under colonial (殖民地的) rule, the history of Native Americans and African people in Trinidad is a cruel, sad story. Spain and England at different times both claimed Trinidad as their colonies. Under British rule, the French settled in Trinidad, bringing with them their slaves, customs, and culture. By 1797, 14,000 French settlers came to live in Trinidad, consisting of about 2,000 whites and 12,000 slaves. Most of the native people who were the first people to live in Trinidad died from forced labor and illness.
Carnival was introduced to Trinidad around 1785, as the French settlers began to arrive. The tradition caught on quickly, and fancy balls (舞会) were held where the wealthy planters put on masks, wigs, and beautiful dresses and danced long into the night. The use of masks had special meaning for the slaves, because for many African people, masking is widely used in their rituals (仪式) for the dead. Obviously banned from the masked balls of the French, the slaves would hold their own little carnivals in their backyards—using their own rituals, but also imitating their masters’ behavior at the masked balls.
For African people, carnival became a way to express their power as individuals, as well as their rich cultural traditions. After 1838 (when slavery was abolished), the freed Africans began to host their own carnival celebrations in the streets and they soon became more popular than the balls.

As a man who traveled to sell vegetables, the son of Italian immigrants, Amadeo Peter Giannini made a small fortune, and then he sold his share to create the Bank of Italy.
In the early hours of April 18, 1906, Giannini was suddenly thrown out of bed. Despite the earthquake epicenter (震中) occurring in San Francisco, the force was so strong that the chimney of their San Mateo home fell down. After making arrangements for his family’s safety, Giannini set off for his bank.
Because the earthquake had made rail service impossible, he would not be able to travel his typical route via the railroad. He set off by foot. Along the 17-mile walk to San Francisco, Giannini saw many wagons (四轮马车) carrying frightened people running away from the city.
Fearing the worst, Giannini reached his bank around noon and was surprised to find that it had not suffered any major damage. Two of his employees had rescued the overnight cash, about $80,000 in gold and silver. Giannini felt quite happy, but only for a short time, as the threat of fire was rapidly moving their way. He moved quickly and determined that they had about two hours to get everything out of there securely.
The three men got two wagons to transport the Bank of Italy’s money, books and furniture out of the city. Like many other nations under colonial (殖民地的) rule, the history of Native Americans and African people in Trinidad is a cruel, sad story. Spain and England at different times both claimed Trinidad as their colonies. Under British rule, the French settled in Trinidad, bringing with them their slaves, customs, and culture. By 1797, 14,000 French settlers came to live in Trinidad, consisting of about 2,000 whites and 12,000 slaves. Most of the native people who were the first people to live in Trinidad died from forced labor and illness.
Carnival was introduced to Trinidad around 1785, as the French settlers began to arrive. The tradition caught on quickly, and fancy balls (舞会) were held where the wealthy planters put on masks, wigs, and beautiful dresses and danced long into the night. The use of masks had special meaning for the slaves, because for many African people, masking is widely used in their rituals (仪式) for the dead. Obviously banned from the masked balls of the French, the slaves would hold their own little carnivals in their backyards—using their own rituals, but also imitating their masters’ behavior at the masked balls.
