I experienced a proud parenting moment the other day. We took the kids to a mall and, when given a choice of how to spend their money, they both decided they wanted to buy 11 .
Even though my daughters both like to read, this is something that has actually been a bit of a(n) 12 . They have many other things they like. Fortunately, I have come up with three ways that have made the job a lot 13 . First, I make books a reward for them. The fact the books are 14 as prizes does seem to get them much more 15 about picking out a new one. Second, I get them 16 in some local book clubs. By being part of the clubs, not only do they read the book, but they get a chance to 17 it with others. Last, I have them make their 18 . This actually started last fall when I wrote a short story 19 The Lonely Leaf and had the girls create some artwork to go with it using real leaves.

While listening to the news reports on war, I often hear the generals or officers use the phrase “we’re acting as-if”. What they 21 , of course, is that they don’t always have concrete (确实的) evidence to stand on, 22 given what they do know, and in order to make the best use of time now, (instead of possibly missing an opportunity by 23 ), they act “as-if”.
I wondered, what if I used this strategy (策略) in my 24 ?
Just to 25 , I decided to act “as-if” I had just received some 26 news. I stood up from the couch with my shoulders back, 27 high. I smiled a big smile, and began 28 around the house with a little bounce (弹跳) in my step. At first, I felt 29 , but I kept doing it. I sang a little and I 30 danced a little. After a few minutes, I felt like going 31 , so I put on my shoes, and started walking down the street with the same “as-if” 32 . A neighbor 33 me, and said, “Wow, you sure look like you feel good today—know where I can 34 some of that?” It was at that moment that I realized that I actually felt 35 . I wasn’t just acting anymore.
You can 36 this too. Instead of waiting on a 37 place to stand in your life, you can make the best use of your 38 right now by acting “as-if”.
You are the leader in your life. You are in charge of what 39 you take. Author Joel Barker put 40 like this, “A leader is a person you will follow to a place you wouldn’t go by yourself.” Decide to follow yourself by acting “as-if” to a place where you thought you might never go.

Please forgive me for not using my full name. My name is MRS. I’m a 29-year-old mother of two lovely kids. I was diagnosed (诊断) with HIV (艾滋病病毒) in August 2004. I was not sick at that time when I decided to take a test. I just told myself to go and test. I think it was all God’s work.
The doctor asked me a few questions and the same time he drew my blood. He told me to come after 2:00 pm to get my results as it was between 10:00 am and 11:00 am. At 2:30 pm I went back to the hospital.
I got into the small room to get my results. The doctor told me I had HIV. I thought it was just a joke. But unfortunately it wasn’t. It was a serious thing. I was really HIV+.
I went straight home from there. I couldn’t tell my husband as I was very angry with him for giving me this horrible disease. But after a few days I decided to tell him; he was wondering what was wrong with me because I was always upset. So we decided to go to the doctor to find the next step. My husband started antiretroviral (抗逆转录病毒) treatment that day because his CD4 cell count was under 100. Mine was over 400.
It was hard for me to believe I was living with HIV. Sometimes it was very difficult especially when I looked at my kids, but there was a strong person in me that would remind me that I would live long to see my 6-year-old kids grow to be two handsome men. It has been 4 good years now and I’m still living a healthy and beautiful life.
We all have a purpose in life and until we all fulfill our different purposes we cannot die.

Doctor Paul Brand explains that while pain is not pleasant it is necessary. It is a gift without which our world would be ugly indeed.
The title of Paul Brand’s book, The Gift of Pain, sounds like a bad joke. However, the title should at least arouse the curiosity of those who have the desire to understand the nature and purpose of pain.
It was originally titled Pain: The Gift Nobody Wants and was published in 1993. When it was reissued in 1997 it was given the title The Gift of Pain. Brand’s argument in the book is that we need pain to survive.
The opening chapter of Brand’s book gives a horrifying glimpse into painlessness. He introduces us to Tanya who was born with a disease, which does not allow her body to recognize pain. As a result, she destroyed her body because she did not take care of it. Her mother first realized something was wrong with her child when she discovered that her eighteen-month-old had gnawed (咬) the ends of her fingers off and was using the injured tips to draw red pictures in her room.
Unable to judge what would damage her based on the pain signals her body gave her, Tanya destroyed her body. While Tanya represents a rare and extreme example of the results of painlessness, Brand’s years as a leprosy (麻风病) doctor gave him endless examples of the damage caused by the inability to feel pain.
Doctor Paul Brand wrote in the book, “When you are going through a painful situation and complaining that you’re unfairly treated, I hope you will think of Tanya’s story. We would never know the existence of danger without feeling pain. We would never know how to protect ourselves and we would never feel free without pain.”

Each person must find their own strength and motivation as they overcome the difficulties that stand in their way. Along the way I learned the universal unchanging keys to success that allowed me to develop in the competitive world of professional football and in my present profession as a motivational speaker and author.
The first key to success is desire (渴望). As a parent we want great things for our children but unless that desire comes from within your child they cannot succeed. I saw situations where parents had taken away the opportunity for their child to develop that burning desire to succeed. When parents step in and take these decisions away from young athletes, the young never develop the desire that competition at a higher level demands.
Goal setting is a training that successful people practice. Sports are great places to develop the habit of goal setting. I have found that setting preparation goals is much more effective than setting game goals. After honestly judging a performance I would pick one or two areas that I needed to concentrate on in preparation for the next game.
Dedication (奉献) is hard work, constant learning, and refusing to quit. Do your children know how hard their sports heroes worked and continue to work at their desire? Your dedication and your approval, and respect for dedication will help develop it in your child.??
Teamwork is what the world is hungry for. In great teams the team covers up for each person’s weaknesses while it values and makes full use of each one’s strengths. As a longtime captain of the Denver Broncos I have instant credibility in this field but the truth is that teamwork is as important in the workplace as at home.
61. The author used to be a .
A. football player B. writer C. speaker D. coach
62. According to the second paragraph, parents should .
A. find the desire to succeed in children
B. have higher expectations of their children
C. create opportunities for children to succeed
D. allow children to develop the desire to succeed
63. What kind of goals did the author set before a game?
A. Game goals. B. Preparation goals. C. Team goals. D. Personal goals.
64. How does the author emphasize the importance of teamwork?
A. By providing data.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving an example of his own.
D. By asking a question and answering it.
65. What is the main purpose of the author?
A. To argue a point. B. To recall his past success.
C. To give parents some advice. D. To share some keys to success.
