A
You may have heard fr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )om some so-called friends that what you have been striving for is not within your reach. The question is, do you believe them and alter your dreams or goals Throughout the centuries, so-called important people have told people of various walks of life that they have no chance to succeed. In a lot of cases, many people cower (畏缩) from these kinds of comments and start to believe that they cannot succeed, or that they don’t have the intelligence to accomplish a goal or a dream.
Two years ago, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) I happened to meet a lady at a local craft market who wanted to branch out further in her life by starting to expand her own small home business. She worked daily for a group home as a day provider but wanted to establish better control of her destiny. She was hesitant to go it alone (单干), afraid that she wouldn’t be able to make enough money to quit her boring day job. Her biggest challenge to succeed was not her ability; it was her belief in herself.
For her, most of he ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r friends and acquaintances doubted her ability to be a business owner, and suggested that she should just forget about her business idea and keep her job, telling her that jobs were hard to come by. Fortunately for her, though, she did not want to totally give up her idea. And, while she continued to have nagging (不断的) doubts about what she really wanted to do, her goal was totally supported by a new business acquaintance.
Her business acquai ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ntance gave her encouragement, made time available whenever she needed questions or suggestions, or just to talk about business issues. Though she had the right plans and ability to succeed, she remained her own obstacle. The good news is that she continued even though struggling with self-doubt and quit her day job to go it alone last year.
What she conquered w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )as more than issues around developing her business; she conquered her own anxiety, her own self-doubt. She succeeded because she did not listen to the naysayers (说不的人); she succeeded because she overcame the greatest obstacle—her own belief in herself.

C. tried to stop her D. lent her money
38. What was the n ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ew business acquaintance’s attitude towards the lady’s idea
A. Cautious. B. Supportive. C. Skeptical. D. Critical.
39. We can infer from the last paragraph that the lady _______.
A. has overcome her self-doubt B. is not successful in her business
C. is still influenced by others D. will listen to others’ advice
40. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage
A. Never listen to others B. Have big dreams

More than half of A ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )merican teenagers and young adults volunteered last year, and this turns out to be peer pressure: three quarters of people aged 13 to 22 whose friends volunteer regularly also do so, which is nearly twice the number of those who pursue voluntary activities based on their concern about particular social issues.
These were the key f ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )indings of research results released by DoSomething.org, a non-profit organization with the goal of motivating young people to take action around social changes through national campaigns. The study, based on data from 4,363 young people, found that the most common form of support by volunteers was assistance with fundraising. Thirty-eight percent of those in the survey said they helped with solicitations (恳求), prompting the study’s authors to conclude:“Young people are a secret weapon. A donation from a passionate teen is more influential than a cold call or a newsletter you were thinking about sending.”
The study also fo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )und a gender divide in voluntary activities. Boys were more likely to undertake physical activities such as environmental cleanup or working with younger children in sports, while girls were more likely to help the homeless and other needy people or to work with arts groups.
Among other findings from the survey:
Students in priv ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ate high schools were 25 percent more likely to volunteer than those in public schools.
Seventy percent o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )f young people from wealthy families volunteered, compared with 44 percent of those from low-income households.

Despite the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) heavy use of technology by young people, few of those surveyed went online to find volunteer opportunities. Young people were 66 percent more likely to seek voluntary activities by talking to people than by turning to social media or websites.
The researchers say t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he survey also pointed out nonprofits can do a better job of getting young people to volunteer.【版权所有:21教育】

I can still remembe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r how slowly time seemed to pass as a child when I was on the beach, and had to wait an hour after I’d finished my sandwiches before I was allowed back into the sea. The reason, I was always told, was that swimming on a full stomach is dangerous because you might get cramp (痉挛) or a stitch (突然剧痛), leaving you unable to swim, and this could result in drowning. But is there any truth about it
The causes of cra ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mp still aren’t fully understood. There’s no evidence to suggest that exercising after eating gives you cramp, but what we do know is that vigorous (强度大的) exercise makes blood flow away from the digestive area to the skin and to the muscles in your arms and legs. So, if your food is still half-digested this could make you feel nauseous. It’s the same reason that extreme fear makes you feel sick. This response of blood flow abandons less-urgent processes like digestion, changing blood flow to the muscles so that you can defend yourself physically, or run faster than you ever have before.
But these studies ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )on cramp involved athletes taking part in long-distance running or even triathlons (铁人三项)—involving a lot more vigour and endurance than the kinds of splashing about kids are more likely to do on holiday. Professional swimmers are careful not to race on a full stomach, but they do ensure that they have eaten enough to provide the fuel needed for them to perform at their best. When endurance swimmers undertake very long distances they even consume food during the race. If they do experience cramp, it’s more a result of overexertion (用力过猛); it doesn’t seem to be related to food.
So how about a stit ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ch Although this can feel like cramp, researchers differentiate between the two. Despite having been given the medical name of “exercise-related transient (短暂的) abdominal(腹部的) pain”, stitches are still not fully understood. In Australia sports scientist Darren Morton has devoted his research career to the subject of the stitch. He’s found that elite swimmers are even more likely to get a stitch than runners. Swimmers who had eaten a large meal between one and two hours before a race were more likely to get a stitch, even though they had waited the necessary hour before exercise.
46. Why was ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the author not allowed to go into the sea soon after meals
A. Because it wa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s believed that swimming on a full stomach will lead to cramp or stitches.
B. Because ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )his parents considered it dangerous for children to swim in the sea.
C. Because it wa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s a local tradition for children not to swim on a full stomach.
D. Because he ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) once got cramp as a child when swimming on a full stomach.

Getting plenty of ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )fresh air, enjoying beautiful scenery, exploring wonderful destinations—United States national park rangers (管理员) have a job that many of us dream about. However, it’s not all fun and games. Park rangers work tirelessly to help preserve natural areas, protect endangered species and ensure visitors enjoy their experience. This week’s Geocache (寻宝) Program is the Park Employee for a Day Geocache series, which put you in the well-worn boots of a park ranger in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA.
This geocach ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e series is relatively new and ranges from 1.5–2.5 in difficulty and terrain (地形). Most of the geocaches were placed in January 2013. “So far, the caches have been wildly popular with visitors. We’re getting positive feedback from visitors about the real-world issues we’re asking them to consider. Visitors are reflecting on how we should respond to climate change, protect endangered species, and manage risks from wildlife. This sort of back-and-forth conversation is an exciting new way different from traditional ranger programs found at most national parks,” said Larry Perez, the U.S. park ranger in charge of the series.
The Park Emp ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )loyee for a Day Geocache is one of the very few geocaches that are placed within a US national park. Geocachers will be able to experience more than just another find—they’ll be able to see the park through the eyes of a ranger. The series begins with a simple park and grabs the cache that contains information about the other geocaches, as well as their coordinates (坐标). Each geocache then presents a different, real-world scenario (场景) that park rangers could face. “The issues we ask our visitors to consider are ongoing, real-world challenges for our park personnel. The series helps expose visitors to the ‘behind-the-scenes’ work—both past and present—that has been undertaken by many of our rangers. These include dealing with invasive exotics, managing large wildfires, and planning for the future in light of sea level rise,” said Larry Perez.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
Geocachers share h ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ow they would handle the situation in their logs. So far, the geocachers that have made the trip to southern Florida have enjoyed the series. Geocacher Lily had this to say, “Thank the national parks for being willing to take a chance on us geocachers. These caches were all placed in excellent locations where the minimal impact would be made. The challenges presented really helped give a glimpse of the different issues the national parks are facing. We love it! Thank you!”

[1] Your mind i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s just like a large computer that has billions of folders (文件夹). Once you access a folder you can reach all the resources inside it very easily. When you read the word “ice” you access the folder that has all related information on the word “ice” according to your own past experience. You might have found ice cream, polar bear, cold water or even skating there.
[2] So what does this ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )have to do with motivating (激励) someone Actually it has a lot to do. Just read further. Why do motivational songs motivate people Motivational songs can’t give you something that you don’t have. They don’t motivate you by introducing new concepts to you but instead they just direct your thoughts to a different part in your brain that has all the motivational stuff you need.
[3] Just as t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he word “ice” is the key that guides your thoughts to a certain area of your brain, a motivational song can guide your thoughts to areas that can help you become motivated. So in fact the song just directs your thoughts to a certain part in your brain and then you are the one who motivates yourself!
[4] For each ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )and every person there are billions of keys that lead to . By getting more understanding of that person you will be able to know how to direct his thoughts towards the areas that contain all the motivational data that he is in need of.
[5] You can motiva ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )te someone by reminding him of something, showing him a picture or letting him hear a song. The key used won’t matter as long as it opens the way and allows the person’s thoughts to be directed from a certain point to another. The reason you might fail to motivate someone is not that he is so helpless but it’s the fact that you haven’t found the right key that can direct his thoughts to the right point.
