Authorities in In ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )dia warn that the world-famous Taj Mahal desperately needs repairs. Some say that this architectural landmark could eventually collapse unless efforts are made to protect and preserve it.
The Taj Mahal, complet ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed in 1648, was built in Agra, India, on the edge of the Yamuna River. The wooden foundation that holds up the building stays strong because of the moist environment around the river. If the river were to dry out, the wooden foundation could crack and fall apart. Over the past decade, the Yamuna has been shrinking, especially during the summer months. This is partly because of overuse of the river water by residents and businesses.21教育名师原创作品
Some official ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s have said the building may collapse in as little as five years. Other experts disagree and question whether the building really faces any danger. Certain politicians and historians, however, are pushing the government to begin preservation efforts, or work to repair and take care of the monument. This is not the first time the Taj Mahal has been threatened. In 1996, officials thought air pollution was turning the building yellow. The Indian government ordered nearby factories to stop burning coal or leave the area.
Shah Jahan, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a former emperor of India, began building the Taj Mahal in 1631. He had it built in honor of his deceased (已故的) wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who was buried inside the Taj Mahal with Jahan. Many architects say the building is a masterpiece of symmetry. Symmetry is a visual technique where the right side of an object looks the same as the left side of the object.
The Taj Mahal has b ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )een named one of the Seven Wonders of the World, a list of amazing human-made landmarks. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) lists the Taj Mahal as a World Heritage Site and helps preserve the famous structure. Because of the building’s importance in Indian culture, Minister of Parliament Ramshankar Katheria has taken the case to both the Prime Minister and President of India. Katheria has said, “I am demanding a high-level inquiry to analyze the severe threat posed to the wooden structures in the foundation of the Taj.”

Perhaps every old ge ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )neration since ancient times has complained about young people, and today is no different. Isn’t it clear that compared with our glorious selves, kids these days are self-absorbed social network addicts
However, this summ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )er, my impression of today’s kids has been restored by the story of Rachel Beckwith. She could teach my generation a great deal about maturity and unselfishness — even though she’s just 9 years old, or was when she died on July 23.
At age 5, Rachel ha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )d her long hair shorn off and sent to Locks of Love, which uses hair donations to make artificial hair for children who have lost their own hair because of cancer or other diseases. After that, Rachel announced that she would grow her hair long again and donate it again. And that’s what she did.
Then when she w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )as 8 years old, her church began raising money to build wells in Africa through an organization called charity: water. Rachel was astonished when she learned that other children had no clean water, so she skipped her ninth birthday party. Rachel set up a birthday page on the charity: water website with a target of $300. Instead of presents, she asked her friends to donate $9 each to charity: water. Finally Rachel raised only $220 — which had left her just a bit disappointed.
Then, on July 20, a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) serious traffic accident left Rachel critically injured. Church members and friends, seeking some way of showing support, began donating on Rachel’s birthday page — charitywater.org/Rachel — and donations reached her $300 goal, and kept rising.
But Rachel couldn’t h ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ear that she had raised beyond the $47,544 that the singer Justin Bieber had raised for charity: water on his 17th birthday. “I think Rachel would have been overjoyed for she secretly had a crush on (迷恋) him,” Rachel’s mom said.
When it was cl ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ear that Rachel would never regain consciousness, the family decided to remove the life support system. Her parents donated her hair for the final time to Locks of Love, and her organs to other children.
Word about Rachel’s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) last fund-raising spread. Contributions poured in, often in $9 each. The total donations soon topped $100,000, then $300,000.
This is a story not ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) just of one girl, but of a young generation of outstanding problem-solvers working creatively.

There are many thin ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )gs I regret from my past, and I can do nothing about them today. So I choose to move on and not dwell on what I cannot control. Every day is an opportunity to be better than I was yesterday, and I try to take full advantage of that.21*cnjy*com
Over the summer whil ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e visiting my parents, I kept talking about an old friend whom I had not seen or talked to for 20 years. My mother decided to help me track him down. A month later I did contact this old friend. That experience made me think. How many other people are living each day with the attitude that an old friend could care less about hearing from them So often we lose touch with old friends and family and we just assume that all is well left alone. The truth is, you have done nothing but create a stalemate (僵局) and no one wins.
Old friends are v ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ery important for several reasons, but to me the most important one is that they helped shape who we are today. Think about it, 20 or 30 or even 40 years ago, you were influenced by something that an old friend did or said. Think about all of the advice you shared with each other, all of the tears you cried and celebrations you had. They are indeed a big part of who you are right this minute.
We live in a world ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) today that makes it incredibly easy to find someone. Don’t wait a minute longer, pick up the phone or write an email and re-introduce yourself to your old friend. You will find that what happens next will simply amaze you. Most likely, you will be greeted with incredible love and happiness. Do not wait to hear that an old friend is now a grandparent, parent, getting married or even passed away. This is not the way you want to be re-introduced. Take the time today and prevent the ultimate regret, and you and your soul will be glad about what you did. The choice depends on you.

Although child labor w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )as not new to the world, it is believed that during 1780 and 1840, there was a massive increase in child employment. During the Industrial Revolution, it was very common to find children working in factories. In 1788, more than 60% of workers in textile mills (纺织厂) of England and Scotland were children. Many laws were passed to eradicate child labor, but hardly succeeded.
By then, many ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )people were aware of increasing demand for educated workforce. The demand for educated workforce provided all the extra reasons for children to join school. But there were parents who could not afford to send their children to schools, and hence children volunteered to work in factories, mines, mills, etc. In mines, children were to crawl through tiny pits to reach the coalface, and also were to operate on the ventilation (通风) ports. In mills, this child workforce grew annually.
In the 1830s man ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y US states enforced laws to restrict the employment of young children in industries. But this had no effect on the rural communities as children were working in the farms, mills and factories.
The laws in America w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ere always ignored, until 1904, when the National Child Labor Committee was formed by concerned people. This committee was chartered (特许) by Congress in 1907. When these people visited industries to inspect if they violated laws, young children were rushed out of their sight. Often the owners said that these children had come to the factory or mill for paying a visit to their mothers, or were helping their mothers.
After many attempts ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), many states passed strict laws, and banned child labor. In 1938, Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, also known as Federal Wage and Hour Law. This became constitutional (宪法的) in 1941 after a declaration by the US Supreme Court.
According to this ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) act, no child would work more than 40 hours a week, and the minimum wage would be 40 cents per hour. Minors below 16 are not to work in those industries which are classified to be dangerous. Children were to work only outside their school hours and during vacations, but only for limited hours.

The best teac ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )her I ever had was Mr. Smith, my high school English teacher in the U.S., because he knew exactly how to appreciate our interest and enthusiasm. 21cnjy.com
Our primary goa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )l, as we were teenagers after all, was to have a good time as well as gain knowledge. A good example was our weekly vocabulary lists. He changed the very ordinary weekly vocabulary assignment into a pleasant task. He asked us to write a story with as many of the new words as possible. With his blessing, we turned the vocabulary assignment into a weekly exchange of clever amusing remarks and laughter. We wrote our stories about each other, making fun of each other, inventing all kinds of tall tales, and including as well many other pieces of trivia (琐事) we would have never been talking about in class. We read the stories aloud in class and those weekly readings became an exciting event during which we did learn some vocabulary and laughed even more.
I try to remember this ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) when I teach my own students — that as a teenager, facing all the issues and concerns that any normal teenager has, what I most wanted and appreciated was learning in an enjoyable way.

The author w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )as impressed by his high school English teacher Mr. Smith most, because he could make his students learn something, especially vocabulary, in an enjoyable way.
Many student ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s learn well when the atmosphere is pleasant. So do I. I still remember that I always had a good time in my English class in junior high school. Mr. Lee, the English teacher, was good at praising his students. He never hesitated to encourage his students when they made a little progress, including me, a student who used to be rather shy and be afraid of speaking in public. Once I made a few mistakes while reading an English article in class, but I was still thought highly of by him, which made me more and more confident.
As a senior high s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )chool student, I am bored with the English class sometimes because we have to do endless exercises, although I know it would help improve my English.
I prefer a class wh ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ere the teachers are willing to share their valuable experience of studying English with us. And I believe we students could gain great knowledge in a class where we can fully take part in various class activities.
