A
The ability to make “small talk” is highly valued. In fact, many English students are more interested in making effective small talk than knowing correct grammar structures! Small talk gets friendships started and “breaks the ice” before important business meetings and other events.
Making small talk is difficult not only for English learners, but also for many native speakers of English. This is because making small talk means talking about almost anything—and that means having a wide vocabulary that can cover most topics.
Let's look at some tips to improve small talk skills and some proper subjects for small talk.
●Do some research
Spend time on the Internet, reading magazines, or watching TV specials about the type of people you are going to meet. For example: If you are taking a class with students from other countries, take time after the first few days of class to do some research. They will appreciate your interest and your conversations will be much more interesting.
●__________________
While you may believe in something very strongly, making small talk about your own personal convictions may quickly end the conversation. Keep it light, don't try to convince the other person that you have the “correct” information about a political system or other belief system.
●Use the Internet to gain specific vocabulary
This is related to doing research on other people. If you have a business meeting, or are meeting people who share a common interest, take advantage of the Internet to learn specific vocabulary.
●Ask yourself about your culture
Take time to make a list of common interests that are discussed when making small talk in your own culture. You can do this in your own language, but check to make sure that you have the English vocabulary to make small talk about those subjects.
●Find common interests
Once you have a subject that interests both of you, keep to it! You can do this in a number of ways: talking about travel, talking about the school or friend you have in common, talking about the differences between your culture and the new culture.
●Listen
This is very important. Listening carefully will help you understand and encourage those speaking to you. You might be nervous, but letting others state their opinions will improve the quality of the discussion and give you time to think of an answer!
31.Why are English students more interested in making small talk?
A.Because of small talk's cultural value.
B.Because of small talk's practical effects.
C.Because it can help them get good grades.
D.Because it's easier than grammar structures.
32.English learners find small talk difficult because of________.
A.a lack of vocabulary
B.a lack of confidence
C.different values between speakers
D.different cultures between speakers
33.Which of the following is proper to be filled in the blank?
A.Don't persuade the others
B.Do have your own beliefs
C.Stay away from religion
D.End the conversation quickly
34.What will most probably be talked about in the paragraph that follows?
A. What subjects to talk about.

For forty-three years, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival has been bringing cultures from the United States and from around the world to Washington, D.C. Visitors to this year's outdoor festival can explore the music, history, art and food of Wales. Visitors to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival could enter into “un mundo musical,” a musical world, at the area of the festival called Las Americas.
The musical artists are here to connect the different kinds of music that are an important part of Latino life and culture. They also are attending the festival to exchange ideas about their music.
Music in Latino(拉丁美州的)culture is rich in tradition and poetry. The white tents of the festival are alive with exciting sounds. Visitors can hear the bomba and plena music traditions from Puerto Rico or the currulao from Colombia's Pacific coast.
Many forms of Latin American music, like the plena and son music represent the customs of the countries. Songs often go along with a dance. According to an expert on son music, a dance is like a proposal. Most importantly it is about the idea of being related to the earth.
With probably most traditions you have the music, the dance, the poetry, and it's often times a proposition, a proposal. For instance, you dance for rain, you dance for a good crop ... they dance to have a relationship with the earth.
Visitors can enjoy listening to the sounds of Latin America while tasting traditional Central and South American cooking. There are foods such as yuca and arroz con pollo. Many foods are especially traditional of Peru.
Not all traditional music from Central and South American remains local. In fact, some are international favorites. After a tasty meal, visitors and natives alike can enjoy music from the Mexican musical string group Son de Madera.

Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt—a mistake 75% of US population make every day. The big question is why.

Myth Number Two: Safety-belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.
Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious (昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situation, not to be trapped in them.
Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren't needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour (mph).

Tony Burke,Australia's environment minister, says he won't decide until next year whether the koala should be protected as an endangered species. He was expected to make his decision by the end of October. But that decision has been put off.Burke said he needed more time to go over the latest information about the koala's population.
In September,an Australian Senate committee reported that there was no question the koala's population is on the decrease.“But they may not yet be eligible(符合条件的)for listing as a threatened species,”said Senator Doug Cameron.“To have such a significant Australian icon(偶像)included on the threatened species list would be a national shame.”
The koala is found only in the eucalyptus(桉树)forests of Australia. And its population is reported to have fallen sharply for many reasons, including the cutting down of forests to make way for human beings' development, their own illness, climate change and killings by other animals such as wild dogs. And every year many koalas are hit by cars as they are trying to cross the busy roads.
Putting off the decision on protection for the koala “is really bad news,”said Debbie Pointing, the president of the Koala Action Group.“We've worked tirelessly for many years to gather data on the populations,”Pointing said.“That data should be enough to make a decision.”
However,Burke pointed out that the Australian government had spent at least $6.3 million on koala conservation efforts since 1996.Senators listed efforts that are already underway in Queensland-the construction of special koala bridges as well as fences along roads,to keep the animals out of harm's way.
Some people say that is not enough.“What we're doing at the moment is likely to drive this species to extinction,”Queensland University zoologist Bill Ellis said.
“Koalas are an iconic Australian animal,”Burke told Australians.“They hold a special place in the hearts of Australians.”
But it is a fact that if more isn't done to protect the koala, they might soon hold a place only in Australians' memories.

A.the construction of special koala bridges is of little use
B.koalas are becoming less important in Australians' hearts

My favourite sport is football. I was a member of our school football team. We practise for three times a week and often watch football match on TV together. Play football not only makes us grow tall and strong but also give us a sense of fair play and team spirit. We must keep in mind that we play for the team instead ourselves. The sport teaches us the important of obedience. Each player must obey the captain, which is the leader of the team. Meanwhile, they mustn't break the rules too often unless we want to win the game.

12.A 这里用a pay rise表示“涨工资,加薪”。
24.D 这里用as与前面构成比较结构as much praise as,本空的as引导比较状语从句。

Let's look at some tips to improve small talk skills and some proper subjects for small talk,可以判断作者在提供了一些提升small talk技能的建议后,将会讨论适合small talk的话题。

Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt—a mistake 75% of US population make every day.
Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times in cases where people are “thrown clear”.

Dear_Nancy,
I'm_writing_to_ask_whether_you_could_recommend_a_tutor_for_me. As you know, I am very eager to improve my English listening and speaking skills. What is worrying me now is that although I have been doing well in English exams, I find I don't have a really good command of English and can't use it freely, especially when I am talking with a foreigner. That's why I need a tutor to help me practice my English. Is there anyone, a native speaker, at your training center who is available on weekends? It's preferable if we can meet on Saturday and Sunday, two hours each time. Thank you for the favor.
I look forward to your reply.
Yours,

Informal conversation is an important part of any business relationship. Before you start a discussion, however, make sure you understand which topics are suitable and which are considered taboos in a particular culture. Latin Americans enjoy sharing information about their local history, art, and customs. They expect questions about your family and be sure to show pictures of your children. You may feel free to ask similar questions of your Latin American friends. The French think of conversation as an art form, and they enjoy the value of lively discussions as well as disagreements. For them, arguments can be interesting—and they can cover pretty much or any topic—as long as they occur in a respectful and intelligent manner.
In the United States, business people like to discuss a wide range of topics, including opinions about work, family, hobbies, and politics. In Japan, China, and Korea, however, people are much more private. They do not share much about their thoughts, feelings, or emotions because they feel that doing so might take away from the harmonious business relationship they're trying to build. Middle Easterners are also private about their personal lives and family matters. It is considered rude, for example, to ask a businessman from Saudi Arabia about his wife or children. As a general rule, it's best not to talk about politics or religion with your business friends. This can get you into trouble, even in the United States, where people hold different views. In addition, discussing one's salary is usually considered unsuitable. Sports is typically a friendly subject in most parts of the world, although be careful not to criticise a national sport. Instead, be friendly and praise your host's team.

3.The writer thinks politics and religion are ________for business.
A.cheerful topics B.taboos
C.rude topics D.wise topics
4.Which is typically a friendly topic in most places according to the author?
A.Sports. B.Children.
C.Personal feelings. D.Families.
5.What should you do when talking about sports with your partner from another country?
A.Praise your own country's sports.

A
Small talk is a very short conversation used by individual to kill time and make the other person feel comfortable in his presence. However, sometimes you should be careful of your topics.
There are certain “safe” topics that people usually discuss.
The weather is probably the number one thing that people who do not know each other well discuss. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation.
Another topic that is generally safe is current events. As long as you are not discussing a controversial_issue,_such as a recent law concerning equal rights, it is usually safe to discuss that. Entertainment and sports news is another good topic. If there is something that you and the other person have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about. For example, if the bus is extremely full and there are no seats available, you might talk about the reasons why. Similarly, people in an office might casually discuss the new paint or furniture.
There are also some subjects that are not considered acceptable when making small talk.
Discussing personal information such as salaries or a recent divorce is unacceptable between people who do not know each other well. Compliments on clothing or hair are acceptable; however, you should never say something (good or bad) about a person's body.
Negative comments about another person not involved in the conversation are also not acceptable. When you do not know a person well, you cannot be sure who their friends are. You do not talk about private issues either, because you do not know if you can trust the other person with your secrets or personal information. Lastly, it is not wise to continue talking about an issue that the other person does not seem comfortable with or interested in.

(2013·重庆高考)It is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson's famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson's observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weather-speak.
Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.
Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. “The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.
Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weather-speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”. In other words, English weather-speak is a means of social bonding.
6.The author mentions Dr. Johnson's comment to show that________.
A.most commentators agree with Dr. Johnson
B.Dr. Johnson is famous for his weather observation

A.Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weather
B.there is nothing special about the English weather
C.the English weather attracts people to the British Isles
D.English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty
9.What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?
A.To explain what English weather-speak is about.
B.To analyse misconceptions about the English weather.
C.To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.
D.To convince people that the English weather is changeable.

Ⅳ.1.Mary was seriously ill. As a consequence, she was in hospital. 2.Every time I see the picture, I always think of the days we spent together.
3.(Do you)Want me to tell you something funny to cheer you up? 4.This word is wrongly spelt; you've left out a letter. 5.It is estimated that about 2,000 students were admitted into the famous university.
