Harpo Marx had curly yellow hair, but it was not really his hair. It was false hair, called a wig. He never said a word in any of the movies. Instead, he acted out what he wanted to say. The light brown Argentine(阿根廷)ants are originally from South America, spreading around the world and living in huge super-colonies, according to the latest scientific findings. Over the years, the Argentine ant has moved to other parts of the globe, possibly by hiding in people's luggage and in cargo. This hasn't always been a good thing since the insects can destroy local plants and affect what animals in that area eat.
Ants are fierce fighters. They protect their territory from invaders, including other types of ants and insects. But Argentine ants, though they live on separate continents, were rather friendly and not hostile towards each other when they come together, scientists say.
There are three known super-colonies of Argentine ants. In Europe, one super-colony is located along the Mediterranean Sea. It is believed to be 3,700 miles long. Another super-colony is located in California. It covers about 560 miles. The third super-colony is on the west coast of Japan.
Scientists have discovered that the insects in the three super-colonies share similar chemical composition. This helps them recognize one another. To prove this, the scientists matched each super-colony with ants from a different colony in a similar part of the world. The Mediterranean ant colony couldn't get along with a smaller one from Spain. And the ants from the west coast of Japan couldn't get along with those from another area in Japan. But when the ants from the three super-colonies came together, they acted like old friends, greeting each other by rubbing antennas to say hello.
The scientists think that the Argentine ant super-colonies are one big family. Because they have similar chemical profiles, the scientists believe they are genetically related. The ants recognize each other by the chemical composition of their outer shells.
35.How does the Argetine ant spread other places?
A.They creep slowly all over the world by themselves.
B.They were brought to other part through people and goods moving.
C.They were sent different part by scientists.
D.They were brought into other part by some kind of insects.
36.Argentine ants can recognize one another in the three super-colony through their ________.

B.help them reproduce more

Instead of going to camp this summer, Zach, 11, decided to walk 668 miles from Atlanta, Georgia, to the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Zach hopes to raise awareness about the difficulties of homeless kids. His journey to help others began two years ago. Zach walked from his home in Tampa, Florida, to Tallahassee. Then, in 2008, he did it again, this time walking from Tallahassee to Atlanta.
Since May, Zach has traveled 12 miles every day in his trusty Adidas shoes. Along the way, he has collected more than 1,000 letters about homeless children. He hopes to expose the letters to the public. Zach says he wants his walk to make a difference. “It was a long walk,” Zach says, “but it was definitely worth it.”
In 2005, Zach participated in an episode of the television show “Extreme Makeover Home Edition.” He says that helping to build homes made him realize there were people who didn't have anywhere to live. That's when he decided that he wanted to help homeless youth. He was also inspired by a movie he saw about Mildred Norman, an activist who promoted world peace by walking 25,000 miles. Zach thought that walking would be a good way to draw attention to his cause.
Zach is also the founder of the Little Red Wagon Foundation. The purpose of the non-profit is to help needy youth. Through his group, Zach has raised money and donated school supplies. “A lot of homeless youth don't get the opportunity to succeed in school because they don't have supplies,” he says.
Zach's volunteerism has even inspired a Hollywood movie based on his life. “He's the most extraordinary ordinary kid I've ever met,” says Michael Guillen of the Philanthropy Project, who is making the movie. “He hasn't just talked the talk. He has literally and figuratively walked the walk.”

The Western has been the favorite type for American adventure story since the nineteenth century. While the American West was being settled, newspapers and “dime novels” could depend on stories of the frontier settlements and tell tales about living in the untamed wilderness to sell. The public back East was eager to read about the West, even if the stories were more fiction than fact.
In 1902, Owen Wister published his novel The Virginian, which was one of the first novels to treat the Western as a serious literary form; the novel still sold well and had inspired several movies and a television series. In 1905, Bertha H. Bower and Zane Grey published their first novels, and the popular Western novels had continued to flourish from that day on, with current novels by Luke Short, Max Brand, and Louis L' Amour carrying on the tradition
The first Western movie appeared even earlier than these serious Western novels. Before the turn of the century, an associate of Edison's had filmed Cripple Creek Barroom Scene, a few seconds of film showing the inside of a saloon, to help publicize the invention of the movie camera. In 1903 the Edison' company filmed the first “full-length” Western—The Great Train Robbery. The film lasts less than fifteen minutes, but a story is told its entirety. In the movie, bandits (强盗) rob a train and its passengers, killing the engineer, and find themselves tracked down by a posse. Audiences loved the movie. Some theaters were actually opened for the single purpose of showing The Great Train Robbery and only later realized that they could do equally well showing other movies. The film was so successful that other companies, and finally even the Edison company itself, began producing copies and other versions of The Great Train Robbery. Ironically, in an era when the West was still very real —Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma were all territories rather than states in 1903—The Great Train Robbery was filmed in New Jersey.

Rome wasn't built in a day, and the Internet didn't come out of a golden egg. Many of today's creations were born of people who had creative ideas, but who did not stop at simply having an idea. They took one brick of capital (资本), another brick of knowledge, perhaps a brick or two of family and friends, and built their empires brick by brick.

Remember, having an online empire does not mean that you have to do it alone. You can take your_friends along with you.Having a friend advertise your services online is a good way to attract more visitors to your empire.
Building an online empire, you will have to be prepared to not only come up with creative ideas, but to carry your ideas through.Talk to people who have already succeeded in building their own empires.Talk to people who are struggling.Join a mailing list that will help you get through your struggle to achieve your goal.
As you move forward, you will find that you can help other people, and you will have a good many stories to tell—not to mention a lot of money in the bank.

During basketball practice last year,12-year-old Nicole Dehart was shooting the ball when a defender tried aggressively to block her shot. The two players made contact, and Nicole hit the floor headfirst. At the hospital, doctors diagnosed a concussion (脑震荡) —an increasingly common injury in youth basketball, particularly among girls, yet one that has yet to gain widespread attention.
On Monday, the medical journal Pediatrics reported that about 375,000 children and teenagers are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year for basketball-related injuries.Obviously, the proportion(比例) related to head injuries is on the rise.About 109,000 children and teenagers were treated for basketball-related head injuries during the 11-year study period. Boys were most likely to experience cuts, fractures(骨折) ; girls were more likely to suffer head or knee injuries.
Basketball is the country's most popular youth sport, played by one million children—550,000 boys and 450,000 girls—each academic year. And the injury numbers, which were gathered by researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus,Ohio, reflect only emergency room visits, leaving out the many thousands of injuries treated by clinics, trainers, family doctors.
“A lot of kids play basketball, both organized and unorganized,” said an author of the study,Lara McKenzie, chief investigator at the Columbus hospital's Center for Injury Research and Policy.“We probably need to do a better job of cultivating children to protect themselves.Preventing brain injuries is going to be pretty challenging.”
A separate report in Pediatrics found that basketball accounted for more than 9 percent of athletic concussions among 8-to 19-year-olds,placing it second among youth sports, behind only football (22 percent),which is followed by hockey and baseball, just under 4 percent each.
Nicole, now 13,has fully recovered but that it took some time.“After the injury, she complained about headaches and feeling lightheaded whenever she was active.Even after the doctor had released her to go back to playing, the high school trainer and I worked together and watched her closely,” Ms.White said.“Kids play rougher and tougher than they ever have.”

Li_Hua综合检测(二)
There's no doubt that...; There's some doubt whether...。
从“How terrible!”
hold down“控制,抵制”;hold up“举起(提出,抓举,支持住,阻挡)”;hold out“伸出;坚持”;hold to“固执(坚持)”。
it is / was the first time +that-clause
A、C、D三项作名词用时皆可接to,但“voyage”意为“航海,航行”,“way”意为“方式,方法;道路”,“visit”意为“参观,访问,到(某地)”,比较A、C、D的意思,显然D项符合题意。
首先排除A、C两项,“introduce sth. to sb.”
此处与上文“by carrying hunters over parts of the country”相对应,故选A项。
A项的用法是tell sb./sth. 或tell sb.+ clause;B项的用法是announce to sb. that clause;C项为persuade sb.(not) to do sth.;D项为prevent sb./sth. (from) doing sth.。
carry out意为“执行,完成,实施”;take out意为“取出,拿出”;point out意为“指点,指明,指出”;work out意为“得出,计算出”。
另外onto one's back常连用,故应排除A项,B项为正确答案。
No,thanks. I can manage it myself,意思是“不用谢,我自己能够应付”,故选C项。

With summer vacation drawing near, some parents are anxious to hunt for summer crammer schools for their children. To get more money, many summer crammer schools have come into being under the name of famous teachers. In this situation, quite a few parents enter their children for the schools. However, as a result, not only do their children fail to improve their study but also the parents are cheated of a lot of money. Meanwhile, their children waste the valuable summer vacation.
So I think parents should have the right and reasonable options for their children as to the training class. In some way leaving the children to nature is a better idea.

There's a new kind of game on the Internet. When you play it, you do more than simply get points or have fun. As you play, you help computers develop new skills.
Computer scientist Luis von Ahn created the games as a way to solve problems that are difficult for computers, even though the problems may seem simple to us. Computers, for example, have a hard time identifying a cat in a photo, while we can spot a cat at a glance.
The idea is to invent online games that people enjoy playing. Then, as people play, they provide data that researchers can use to improve computers. The players don't know that they're helping out. They're just having fun.
“The potentials huge,” says computer scientist Manuel Blum, one of von Ahn's colleagues at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “These games with a purpose make use of humans in a wonderful way.”
By harnessing the brainpower of thousands of people playing games on the Internet, computers may learn how to identify pictures, translate Web pages into forms that blind people can use, develop common sense, understand foreign languages, and more.
Our brains are made to collect and process lots of information about what we see, von Ahn says.
Computers, on the other hand, simply “see” a grid of dark and light dots, called pixels. It's not obvious to a machine that a certain blob is a cat. Likewise a computer doesn't know that a tiger, a cartoon feline, and a kitty curled up on a couch all belong in the same category: cat.
“If you give me an image of some common animal, I can tell you if it's a cat or a dog,” von Ahn says. “Computers can't do that yet.”
Because computers can't make such distinctions, search engines have a hard time finding images on the Internet, and getting people to label each image doesn't work well. There are billions of images, and the job is pretty boring.

A
“A serious attack on the fantasy story for children comes from those who do not wish children to be frightened,” writes C. S. Lewis in an essay named Three Ways of Writing for Children. Those who say that children must not be frightened mean two things. Firstly, they mean that we mustn't do anything likely to give children fears, and secondly, they want to keep out of their minds that they are born into a world of death, violence (暴力), wounds, good and evil (邪恶). C. S. Lewis says he agrees with the first reason, but not the second.
He goes on to comment, “Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel(残酷的)enemies, let them at least hear of brave fighters and heroic courage. By limiting your child to perfect and nice stories of child life in which nothing alarming ever happens, they would fail to face fears and hardships.” “It would be nice,” he continues, “if no little boy in bed ever hears a frightening sound. But if he is to be frightened, I think St. George, or any bright champion in armor, is a better comfort than the idea of the police.”
Bruno Bettelheim, a well-known child psychologist, also points out that fantasy stories provide children with a valuable education about good and evil. He believes that all children have many personal fantasies filled with fears and fantasy stories comfort them and offer solutions. Happy endings tell them that solutions and hope are real and model the kind of happy life children want to find.
A good fantasy suggests rather than teaches possible answers to life. It's believed that reading fantasies quickens the ability to get and put ideas from books to reality. It's what good literature does-it makes life larger.

Berlin-Germany's University of Heidelberg says a researcher has given evidence that apparently confirms(证实)the identity of the woman behind the Mona Lisa's famous smile.
She is Lisa del Giocondo, wife of Florentine businessman Francesco del Giocondo, according to notes written in the margins of a book by a friend of Leonardo da Vinci as the artist worked on the masterpiece, the school said in a statement.
The discovery by a Heidelberg University library manuscript(手稿)expert Armin Schlechter appears to confirm what has long been suspected. It is also an answer that has been in plain(清楚地)view for centuries: the Mona Lisa is known as Lisa del Giocondo in Italian.
Lisa del Giocondo was first named as the woman in the painting by Italian writer Giorgio Vasari in 1550, who also dated the work at between 1503 and 1506, the university said.
But because Vasari relied on anecdotal(轶事的)evidence, there was always doubts about the identification, and Leonardo is not known to have made any notes about the model's identity himself.
Mixing the mystery, unclear references in 1517, 1525 and 1540 point to other identifications.
“One possibility discussed is the presentation of an imaginative likeness of a woman, Leonardo's female ideal,” the school said.
But the find by Heidelberg library expert Armin Schlechter settles the matter, according to the university.
In a copy of the works of Roman philosopher Cicero, Agostino Vespucci, a Florentine official and friend of Leonardo's, wrote in the margins that da Vinci was working on a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. He dated his notes October 1503,also helping fix the exact time Leonardo was working on the painting.
“All doubts as to the identity of the Mona Lisa are eliminated(清除)by one source,” the university said.
The discovery was actually made in 2005, but was not widely known until a German radio station last week aired it in a report.
