Yin Jui-rong was one of the lucky ones.“I watched my village get buried,” says the native farmer in southern Taiwan, one of hundreds in the mountainous region caught in the island's worst floods in 50 years. On August 8, Yin and 300 others in the township of Namasia fled their homes and climbed up a nearby mountain to higher ground. They spent three stormy days and nights under makeshift(临时的) tents before the weather cleared enough for them to make smoke signals for help. Finally, after more than 72 hours, military helicopters spotted and rescued them.
In neighboring Siaolin village, the government confirmed(查明) that nearly 400 were buried alive, bringing the death toll(伤亡人数) of Typhoon Morakot, which hit Taiwan last week, to over 500. It was the deadliest natural disaster Taiwan has seen since a 7.3 earthquake hit the island in 1999, killing 2,416, mostly in central Taiwan. The storm dumped more than six feet of rain in over two days, leading to floods that wiped out many mountainside villages and towns, a six-story hotel, 34 bridges, 253 roads and countless homes. As of Saturday morning, an estimated 35,000 people are still stranded in the region.
Seven days after Morakot hit, the thunder of large military helicopters landing every ten minutes at Cishan Junior High School booms through this small township—an epicenter(中心) of Morakot relief efforts—as they return from the ongoing rescue missions. With each landing, rescue workers raise a banner with the name of the village it flew in from as family members, lined up outside the classrooms, desperately look and hope to see their loved ones come out.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a member of one of the most famous families in American politics. Though she never ran for office, she spent her life energetically working to improve the lives of people with developmental problems.
Eunice Shriver was best known for creating the Special Olympics, an athletic event for people with mental disabilities. Her efforts changed the way the world thinks about the mentally disabled.
Mrs. Shriver officially became involved in helping people with developmental problems when she became the executive vice-president of a family organization in 1957. The Joseph P. Kennedy Junior Foundation was created in 1946 to honor her oldest brother, who died fighting in World War Two.

Eating disorders continue to be a leading cause of health concern for many young adults. For both young men and young women, the development of an eating disorder is often in response to peer pressures, perceptions(观念)about societal views and related to mental health complications.
For some young adults, especially those in college, the development of an eating disorder can lead to early attack of cardiovascular(心脏血管的)complications(并发症), electrolyte imbalances and even complications of early-onset osteoporosis(骨质疏松症)and abnormal menstrual(月经的)cycles.
Among many college campuses, there is a growing concern over the development of an eating disorder in students. Often, eating disorders that develop during the college years can be traced back to an issue involving a recent breakdown in a relationship with a parent. In fact, when a college student feels insecure or detached from a parent, it is not uncommon to find some comfort in food.
For many college counselors and healthcare officials, there is a growing recognition that eating disorders in women can generally be attached to some form of injured attaching issue while, for men, the lack of contact with a parent often does not arouse the same response. Therefore, focusing on issues of being home sick, creating support networks and identifying early signs of depression are often a key focus of college staff when working with female students.
If you, or your child, is about to head off to college, it is important to understand how the detachment from parents may affect your child's eating habits. While many college students gain the “freshman fifteen”, it is the college student who gains significantly more weight, or loses an abundant amount of weight, who may be experiencing an eating disorder. If you are attending college and you find that your eating habits have intensely changed, seek assistance from the campus healthcare facility.

Ocean waters are constantly under movement. But have you thought about the forces or reasons behind their movement? Do you know how they move? An ocean current is basically defined as a horizontal movement of seawater in the ocean. Some of the factors affecting the movement of ocean currents are the rotation of planet, temperature, wind and the gravitational pull of the moon.
Why do ocean currents flow? Although there might be various reasons for the existence or flow of ocean currents, the major ones are: the sun and the rotation of the earth. The sun affects the ocean by heating the atmosphere, creating winds and moving the sea surface through friction. This tends to drag the water surface along as the wind blows over it.Secondly, it affects the ocean by altering the density of the ocean surface directly by changing its temperature and its salinity (咸度).
The rotation of the earth also tends to affect the currents through the Coriolis force. This force makes water move to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. It exists because the ocean water is affected by friction with the earth only at the seafloor, and because the eastward linear velocity (线速度) of the earth decreases from a maximum at the equator to zero at the poles.
The ocean currents carry a large amount of energy and this is directly related to the density of water. Many Asian, European and North American countries are currently conducting research on currents in order to assist people.
It is essential to have knowledge of the ocean currents to reduce the costs of shipping such as fuel costs. The knowledge was even more essential in the sail-ship era.A very good example of this is the Agulhas current, which long prevented Portuguese sailors from reaching India.

A.They move from the right to the left.
B.Their speed decreases if the linear velocity of the earth increases.
C.They move from the east to the west.
D.Their directions are affected by the rotation of the earth.
49.Why do many countries carry out research on ocean currents?
A.To find out how they form.
B.To make use of the energy.

D.To check the density of water.
50.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Ocean currents do a great deal of good to sailing.

We have two daughters: Kristen is seven years old and Kelly is four.Last Sunday evening,we invited some people home for dinner.I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang.
Mommy would introduce them to the guests, and they would take the guests' coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom.
The guests arrived.I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids. Each of the guests made a particular fuss(关爱)over Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. They said she was a great girl to be carrying coats upstairs at her age.
I thought to myself that we adults usually make_a_big_“to_do”_over the younger one because she's the one who seemly more easily hurt.We do it with the best of intentions.
But we seldom think of how it might affect the other child.I was a little worried that Kristen would feel she was being outshined (逊色,相形见绌).I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been missing for twenty minutes.I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying.
I said,“What are you doing,my dear?”
She turned to me with a sad expression and said,“Mommy, why don't people like me the way they like my sister? Is it because I'm not pretty? Is that why they don't say nice things about me as much?”
I tried to explain to her, kissing and hugging her to make her feel better.
Now,whenever I visit a friend's home,I make it a point to speak to the elder child first.

In fact, I didn't realize it until I was chosen monitor of my class in my senior middle school. At first, I did most of the duties myself while other cared little about class activities. As result, I was tired out and unhappy. Then I turned to my teacher and he advised me cooperate with others. So I had a good talk my classmates for their ideas. They soon understood me and began to what they should in class.
Teamwork freed me of trouble and made my work effective than ever.

Dear Sir,
Yesterday afternoon,we had a discussion on the question:“Would you go shopping with your friend at his request while you are going over your lessons?”
My classmates Li Lei and Tom had different viewpoints. Li Lei thought that he couldn't refuse his friend's request even though his study would be affected. But Tom didn't think so. He said he wouldn't meet all requests from his friends. Studying was more important than shopping.
In my opinion, either Li Lei or Tom is right to some extent. We may meet our friends' requests, but that depends. If we have difficulties,we should let them know.
Yours,
Li Hua

Remember how great exercise was when you were a little kid!Back then, racing around the playground or skipping rope for hours, you weren't thinking fitness, you were thinking entertainment. But in this age of high-tech home equipment and underused gym memberships, the simple joy of jumping rope has been forgotten. Rediscovering it will give you a total-body exercise you can find.
Although considered an excellent form of exercise, jumping rope has never gained widespread acceptance because of two fundamental reasons. First, most people recognize jumping rope as an excellent form of cardiovascular (心血管的) exercise, but they also believe that it is simply too difficult. In other words, they don't think they'll be able to continue jumping for the near 20 minutes that it takes to achieve a beneficial physical outcome. Second, many view it as somewhat boring and overly repetitive—not as something fun or enjoyable.
As a matter of fact, jumping rope can be great fun if you find a proper way to practice it. Instead of doing the usual two-foot bounce over and over again, people good at rope-jumping often change their pattern every 10 or 20 jumps. A single bounce,a double-bounce,a skip,a knee-up,side swings as well as a variety of other easy-to-learn free-style rope-jumping.
Now researchers are learning that jumping rope also prepares the brain for learning. It is an exercise allowing both brain hemispheres to perform in parallel to each other. In short, jumping rope can be a life-long activity requiring little equipment, time and space, yet leading to a much healthier life.
1.From the first paragraph we learn that________.
A.jumping rope has faded from people's memories
B.people now have more advanced equipment

D.people now like to have exercise in a gym

D.there are many ways to follow
4.According to the researchers,jumping rope________.
A.only prepares the brain for learning
B.is suitable for students only
C.helps both brain hemispheres work together
D.can be dangerous for old people
5.What is the author's attitude towards rope jumping?
A.He is arguing against it.

句子主语I与see在逻辑上为主谓关系,应用主动形式,排除B、D两项;having done的否定形式是在前面加not,故选C。
knock..over意为“撞伤,撞翻”;knock off意为“撞落,撞下”。

Michael Greenberg is a very popular New Yorker. He is not famous in sports or the arts.以及1空前面的But可知,此处应填know about“知道”。learn from向……学习;cheer for为……
2.D 根据15空前的many poor New Yorkers know him...
3.B 由空前的he is “Gloves” Greenberg我们知道,那些人叫他“Gloves” Greenberg,所以此空应该是“名字(name)”。
He looks like any other businessman...(他与其他商人看上去一样……)以及39空之前的But可知,应选B项different(不一样的)。
5.A 空后为定语从句who look at the sidewalk and________,其中look at及6空都是路人的动作行为,所以选act。
cross over转变,变换;keep off远离。

11.C 联系前文我们知道Mr.Greenberg发放手套给穷人,所以此处为give away(赠送,发放)。其他三个选项的意思:search for寻找;store up储存;put on穿上,均与文章语境不符。
be sorry for为……感到遗憾;be satisfied with对……感到满意;be proud of以……
18.B 根据后面的“Michael's father always helped the poor...”
与make a big difference相对,选small。

A
When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate (照亮) me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share.
When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say, “Let's start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.
When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We_gave_London_to_each_other.
For almost four years I have had a remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, some times in a funny way, in the other's dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think, “Yes, I must tell...” We have never met.
It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of psychologist, who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.

B
Americans are famous for being friendly to people. Their friendships, however, tend to be shorter and more casual than friendships among people from other cultures. It is not uncommon for Americans to have only one close friend during their lifetime, and consider other “friends” to be just social acquaintances This attitude probably has something to do with American mobility and the fact that Americans dislike to be dependent on other people. They tend to “compartmentalize”(划分) friendships, having “friends at work” “friends on the softball team” “family friends” and so forth.
Because the United States is a highly active society, full of movement and change, people always seem to be on the go. In this highly_charged atmosphere, Americans sometimes seem abrupt(无礼的) or impatient. They want to get to know you as quickly as possible and then move on to something else. Sometimes, they ask you questions that you may feel very personal. No insult is intended; the questions usually grow out of their true interest or curiosity, and their impatience to get to the heart of the matter.
And the same goes for you. If you don't understand certain American behavior or you want to know more about them, do not hesitate to ask them questions about themselves. Americans are usually eager to explain all about their country or anything “American” in which you may be interested. They explain so much in fact that you may become tired of listening. It doesn't matter because Americans tend to be uncomfortable with silence during a conversation. They would rather talk about the weather or the latest sports scores, for instance, than deal with silence.
On the other hand, don't expect Americans to be knowledgeable about international geography or world affairs, unless those subjects directly involve the United States. Because the United States is geographically distant from many other nations, some Americans tend not to be aware of what goes on in other parts of the world.
6.According to the passage, Americans' attitude towards friendship is________.
A.it is unusual to have only one close friend
B.more informal than that in other countries
C.to regard all friends as only social acquaintances
D.to divide friends into several grades
7.The words “highly charged” (Paragraph 2) most probably mean________.
A.extremely expensive
B.much cheerful
C.highly responsible
D.full of mobility and change
8.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Americans know a lot about international affairs.
B.Friendships among Americans tend to be more formal.
C.Americans always seem to be on the move.
D.Americans like to cooperate with other people.
9.It can be inferred from the passage that________.
A.Americans want to take part in all kinds of activities
B.curiosity is the major characteristic of Americans
C.Americans do not know how to deal with silence
D.Americans' characters are influenced by their social and geographical environments
