Michael Jackson's pop music success lasted about 40 years and could extend well into the future as music companies re-produced his CDs, repackage (重新包装) his songs after his sudden death, meeting the demand of market.
His death has sparked new interest in his albums and videos. After hearing his death, many people get into sorrow. Flowers are placed on the star of Michael Jackson on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Hollywood. “I have Michael in my heart,” said Michael Jackson fan Selvin Ramirez. Ramirez met Jackson by chance in 2002 and now says that day was the most important day of his life. He now plans buy more albums of Jackson.
Jackson's influence on music faded (褪色) over time, with albums such as 1995's “History” and 2001's “Invincible” failing to top earlier pop music albums such as “Thriller” and “Off the Wall”. But when an artist of his stature dies, it sparks sales of once common albums, and encourages efforts to repackage his albums and singles.
“We have seen an important increase in sales of Michael Jackson CDs at our stores within the past day or so,” said a spokesman from a music company. At online company Amazon.com Inc, Jackson CDs and DVDs sold out in the first few minutes following reports of Jackson's death. Amazon sold more Jackson CDs in the past 24 hours than in previous 11 years, a spokesman said. The company eBay Inc also reported an increase in Jackson products, with new listings up 61 percent. People ordered more than 50,000 songs, with “Billie Jean”, “Thriller” and “Beat It” the most popular.

Facing fear is one of the most important things you can do. Some people have a fear of failure and others a fear of success. It may seem strange but neither one is a good fear. You might think the fear of failure could be a good thing but it's not, particularly if the fear of failure keeps you from accomplishing anything.
For myself, I have a huge fear of failure but I am good at facing that fear and overcoming it. I don't let my fear of failure cause me to delay(延误) my decision or get me off the track. I use the fear to make sure I'm doing my absolute best at all times because I know if I don't do my best I will fail. That frightens me. I'm not afraid of trying at all.
I started a business when I was married to my first wife. The business became successful and I was getting ready to make some huge money. However, my wife just wanted us to stay small because she was comfortable there. She feared what success might bring and did every little thing she could to make sure we didn't grow any bigger.
I'm sure you can see the problem. I had a fear of failure and she had an even bigger fear of success. Finally I couldn't stand any more of her fear and we got a divorce.
Facing fear and overcoming fear is very important. People even have a fear of fear. I'm sure that it is normal. People fear change more than anything else and fight that change with fear. They fear what they don't know or understand. They fear anything new to them. But we need to keep in mind that the world is changing all the time and that change is inevitable You can live a life free of fear by learning to face your fears.
35.From the first paragraph, we can learn that the fear of failure________.

A.To explain two kinds of fears.
B.To tell his problem in his early career.
C.To explain the bad effects of different fears.
D.To show the fear of failure is a good thing.
38.People who have a fear of fear
A.often fail to understand something new to them
B.just want to live an unchangeable life
C.believe that change is inevitable
D.fear that they can't change

Last week January 6, 2006, the famous singer Lou Rawls died of cancer in Los Angeles, California. He was seventy-two years old.
Lou Rawls made more than sixty albums. He sang it all: rhythm and blues, jazz, soul and pop. But like many great American singers, he started singing Christian gospel music as a child in church. One man died and Rawls came close to death. He later said the experience changed him for the better. He said he began to learn acceptance, direction and understanding.
Lou Rawls and Sam Cooke moved to Los Angeles to seek music careers. A few years later, in 1967, Rawls won the first of three Grammy awards. One of his hit song is Dead End Street.
Lou Rawls' music was played in disco dance clubs in the 1970s. In fact, he produced his biggest hit during that period. You'll Never Find (Another Love Like Mine) is one of his hit songs in this period.
Lou Rawls also worked as an actor in television, movies and theater. He was well known for his support of humanitarian groups. But he was best known for his voice. Sleep scientist Ying-Hui Fu at the University of California, San Francisco, says “We do not know why some humans need more sleep; why some humans need less sleep; why, when we do not sleep, we do not fun_ction well. We just do not know much about sleep at all.” But scientists now know: A team led by Professor Fu has reported the first genetic link to how much sleep we need.
The team was looking for a natural clock in the body that controls sleep and wakefulness. What they found was a genetic abnormality(反常). People who have this mutation(突变) need less sleep than others. But keep in mind that the scientists say this mutated gene may be rare. The study involved two members of an extended family. They did fine on just six hours of sleep a day. Studies have shown that over time, most humans need eight to eight and a half hours of sleep for the best health.
To test their theories, the scientists genetically engineered the mutation in mice. The mice with the mutation needed less sleep than normal mice. They were also more active even after being kept awake.
The researchers will continue to study the mice to test whether the gene is related to other medical conditions. And they will study whether it is involved in controlling sleep quantity alone, or also what scientists call the “wakefulness-behavioral drive.” This drive is important for getting food, shelter and mates.
How you sleep can be as important as how much you sleep—especially for newborn babies. The study found that more than one-third of the pictures in women's magazines showed babies in unsafe sleep positions. They showed babies sleeping on their sides or stomachs. The academy says babies should sleep on their backs. It says they should be placed on a separate sleep surface from their parents, without blankets, pillows or other soft bedding.

We have learned information about global warming, whether in school, from TV programs,or by overhearing the adults around us.The pieces of information and facts are everywhere, but where on earth does global warming come from? How does it relate to our lives? And what can we do to help?
Let's check out The Down to Earth Guide to Global Warming, written by Americans Laurie David and Cambria Gordon. In the book, the concept of sustainability(可持续性的概念)is compared to the love of your pet.“Even though your cat might pee(撒尿)on your bedspread or your dog might chew your favourite shoes, you still keep it.You don't throw it away.”The planet is also compared to your messy room, and CO2 and temperature“go together like peanut butter and jelly(果酱)”.
While a mere one degree increase in world temperature might seem small,a comparison of a popsicle(冰棒)you can lick(舔)and one you’d have to drink may make your concern for global warming grow.
The book, constructed from 100 percent recycled paper and printed with soy(黄豆)inks, has a chapter“What you can do to stop global warming”.There are tips you might have already known, but the book has more interesting ideas. For example, leading an unplugged(不通电的)life for a day,or considering your career ambitions in light of climate change. From hydrologist(水文工作者)to biofuel(生物燃料)engineer, they are careers that are sustainable and can be realized.

Do Dogs Understand Us?
Be careful what you say around your dog.It might understand more than you think.
A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩).
In one experiment, the researchers took all items that Rico is_supposed_to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back.In four tests,Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words.
In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before.
The correct object was chosen in seven out of 10 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法).A month later,Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.
Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog.For one thing,Rico is a border collie,a breed( 品种) known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog had been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months.
It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say.Even if they do,they can't talk back.Still,it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big,wet kiss in return!

It is the same with... be true of表示“与……情况相同”。由句意可知后者同意前者的观点,故B项正确。
2.A 句意:我一想到前面的艰辛工作就感到沮丧。depressed感到沮丧的。
3.A 句意:作为一名演员,你必须利用自己的经验去塑造可信的角色。draw upon利用,凭借,符合句意。draw in(白天时间)渐短;draw up拟定(文件、计划等);draw back向后移动,撤回。
connect...with与……有联系;combine...with...
8.B make contact with与……
11.C be about to do sth.

13.A 从第四段的第四句“...and started to take pictures in the direction of the window.”
14.C 从后面的一句话“I ran to my bed and pulled my blanket over my head.”

从第三段的最后两句话“He later said the experience changed him for the better. He said he began to learn...”
从第二段的第二、三句可以判断出B项正确;从第二段的倒数第二句“They did fine on just six hours of sleep a day.”

Dear_Denis,
I'm glad you'll come to China to learn Chinese. Chinese is very useful and interesting, and many foreigners are learning it now.
Chinese is quite different from English. First, you'd better remember as many Chinese characters as possible. Then add characters together to form words so that you could have a good study of phrases and sentence patterns. Next is communication. Watching TV and listening to the radio are good ways to practise your listening. It's important to do some reading and writing, too.
If you have any questions, please tell me. I'm willing to give you help at any time.
Looking forward to seeing you soon in China.
Yours,
Li_Hua

A new President with an ambitious agenda(议程). That describes former Nicaraguan foreign minister Miguel D'Escoto Brockmann, who took office at the United Nations this week as the organization's General Assembly opened its 63rd session. The new President's immediate agenda for all 192 members includes addressing the global food crisis, reforming the UN Security Council, and combating (防止) climate change.
As Brockmann addressed the Assembly, he noted that “trillions of dollars are spent on wars of aggression, while more than half the world's people are in hunger and poverty.” During this session, members will examine the root causes of the world food crisis caused by rising food prices, and its impact on world hunger and poverty. President Brockmann identified the root of world hunger as unequal trade of agricultural goods within and between countries.
The issue of expanding the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will likely cause heated debate during the Assembly. The UNSC is a powerful section of the United Nations, in charge of maintaining international peace and security. Currently, the UNSC has 15 members: 10 rotating, non-permanent members and five permanent ones. The five permanent members—China, United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Russia—have not changed since the UN's beginning in 1945. They are the only members to hold veto (否决) power. The General Assembly has agreed to begin talks no later than February 28, 2009, about expanding the membership of the UNSC.
In response to questions from journalists, Brockmann said that this session will examine climate change, unequal access to water, terrorism and human rights, nuclear control and disarmament (裁军), the ongoing situation in Palestine, humanitarian assistance, and race equality.
“What is important now is that we look to the future, learning from our past mistakes, and together carry wholeheartedly on the task of building a new and better world. I am aware of the great expectations that the vast majority of the inhabitants of our threatened planet have placed in the United Nations to bring them peace and security, and to defend their right to life and to full development,” said Brockmann. “We must not fail them.”

Public schools in Washington, D.C. provide students with musical instruments for free. When something goes wrong with an instrument, Charles West and Larry Jernigan do the repairs. Both men approach their work with a passion(激情). For them, it's important that students have a joyful experience with music.
The two have worked together for almost 20 years. This year alone, they've fixed about 450 instruments. Both men are musicians and music lovers, so learning to do repairs came naturally.
“I have been a musician all my life,” says West. “I played in an orchestra here in the city. I majored in music in college. I played in an army band.”
Jernigan's musical interests are varied. “I was formerly trained in the piano and guitar. The alto sax and the flute, I picked up while working here.”
In addition to fixing instruments, the two also go to schools to instruct teachers and students on how to make minor repairs on their own.
West believes if children start early and stay involved with music, it enriches other areas of their lives.“I see that in other kids. I see it in myself. I have seen it hundreds of times and it works,” he says. “They learn teamwork. They learn patience and respect.”
But West has concerns about the future of music in the electronic age.
“This instant age has taken away from the sit-down, the patience. And to learn to play an instrument, it takes patience, it takes diligence and it takes time.”
Being able to enjoy music on the job is one of the benefits of the job. Both men agree their best rewards are the students' performances.

What's your favorite type of music? Most people may prefer rock and roll, pop or jazz. These types are most publicized by television and the radio. Country music now would seem to mistakenly belong to the category of rock or pop. Publicity of this category started to drop only after the year 2000, however, it did have its peak years just before the decline(衰落).
What people may not know is that this type of music inspired(促成)rock and roll especially with one of the most important figures in music history—Elvis Presley who is known as the “King of Rock and Roll”. Elvis used to be very famous at a radio program which broadcast country music back in the late 1940's. Country is also influenced by jazz and blues. Rock music too is influenced by jazz and blues but is also heavily influenced by country so that they may even seem similar.
Nowadays, country is closely related to pop due to artists' preference and popular demand. Starting from the 1980's it slowly divided itself into New and Old Country Music. Legends like Johnny Cash began to slip away because the new perception(理解)of country actually contains pop and his music just doesn't fit the category. Fortunately, country music is still heavily promoted through websites and reviews.
Certain types of music nowadays are linked with different age groups. Classical for the people in the mid 19th century, pop in the 1920's, and then there's country. All these types continue to grow and modernize while still appealing to certain age groups. More modern country music tends to become different in their own ways which makes it even harder to identify them as country while, again, remain appealing only to certain age groups. Active promoters of country music videos, however, seem to appeal to a large number of age groups especially those active in Australia. For as long as country isn't mixed with other types, it will eventually regain(重新获得)its charm as music for all ages.
6.It can be learned from the first paragraph that country music________.

B.used to be liked by more people compared to jazz
C.has become less popular since the year 2000

8.Some legends of country music began to slip away because________.
