Some say everyday miracles(奇迹) are predestined(注定的)—the right time for the appointed meeting. And it can happen anywhere.
In 2001, 11-year-old Kevin Stephan was a bat boy for his younger brother's Little League team in Lancaster, New York. It was an early evening in late July. Kevin was standing on the grass away from the plate, where another youngster was warming up for the next game. Swinging his bat back and forth, giving it all the power an elementary school kid could give. The boy brought the bat back hard and hit Kevin in the chest. His heart stopped.
When Kevin fell to the ground, the mother of one of the players rushed out of the stands to his aid. Penny Brown hadn't planned to be there that day, but at the last minute, her shift(换班)at the hospital had been changed to see her son's performance. She was given the night off. Penny bent over the senseless boy, his face already starting to turn blue, and giving CPR, breathing into his mouth and giving chest compressions. And he revived in the end.
After his recovery, he became a volunteer junior firefighter, learning some of the emergency first-aid techniques that had saved his life. He studied hard in school and was saving money for college by working as a dishwasher in a local restaurant in his spare time.
Kevin, now 18, was working in the kitchen when he heard people screaming, customers in confusion, employees rushing toward a table. He hurried into the main room and saw a woman there, her face turning blue, her hands at her throat. She was choking.
Quickly Kevin stepped behind her, wrapped his arms around her and clasped his hands. Then, using skills he'd first learned in Scouts. The food that was trapped in the woman's throat was freed. The color began to return to her face.
“The food was stuck. I couldn't breathe,” she said. She thought she was dying. “I was very frightened.”

Over 70 percent of the “double single-child couples” in China need help from their parents in taking care of their own kids, according to a recent survey.
“Women of China” magazine and a consulting company carried out a survey recently on young couples of the “single-child” generation, the Morning Post reports. The couples surveyed were around 29 and have been married for three years on average, with university education and monthly income of 4,000 yuan ($531). Among them, 43.5 percent have kids.
Results show that 71.9 percent of the young couples have help from their parents in taking care of their kids.
Grown up as the “single-child”, the only child in a family since the family planning policy was adopted in 1979, this generation depends much on their parents.
The parents of the “single-child” generation focused more on their children's physical well-being rather than their attitudes and values, according to some psychologists.
The research also found that the “double single-child couples” follow a rather traditional value system.
Survey shows that 27.5 percent of them got married after dating for one to two years, 25.2 percent two to five years, and 20 percent didn't tie the knot until dating for five years. Also, 30 percent of the couples were schoolmates, while 43.8 percent were introduced by someone.
Since their marriage are based on enduring relationships, 65.2 percent of the husbands and 62.9 percent of the wives think that compromise(妥协)and tolerance(宽容)are necessary in their marriage. Meanwhile, 21.7 percent of the husbands and 37.1 percent of the wives support the idea that happiness is the key standard for a marriage.

In December 1940, Sir Nicholas Winton was just a 31-year-old businessman from London, headed off for a skiing vacation in Switzerland. But shortly before he was scheduled to leave, he received a call from a friend, Martin Blake. “I have a big task and I need your help,” Blake told him.
Under Blake's urging, Winton skipped out(偷偷溜走) on his holiday and headed to Prague instead. There, he volunteered as an aid in a refugee camp where thousands of Jewish families were living in terrible conditions. It became more and more evident that war was unavoidable, and Winton knew that Jewish families everywhere would be in grave danger when the Nazi troops arrived. “At the refugee camp, the parents desperately wanted at least to get their children to safety,” Winton said. “I began to realize what suffering there is when armies start to march.”
Winton decided to help all of the children escape. He worked late into the night after his day job, with help only from his mother and a few volunteer helpers. It wasn't easy, but he managed to find adoptive homes for all of the children in Great Britain and Switzerland. Winton put 669 children on trains to safe refuge over the next months. Though many of their relatives were sent to concentration camps and never seen again, all 669 children survived the war.
Last Friday, another train pulled into a railway station in London, carrying 22 of “Winton's children,” as they now call themselves. Now in their 70s and 80s, the survivors had come together to mark the 70th anniversary of their escape, and to pay tribute to Winton, who is now 100 years old.
Wilton's family of survivors has grown quite a bit: today, between the 669 survivors and all of their descendants, Winton's “children” number more than 7,000. We'd have to agree with words inscribed(印刻的) on a ring that one of the survivors gave to Winton years ago: “Save one life, save the world.”
39.Why did Winton go to Prague? Because ________.
A.his family was living in terrible conditions there
B.he was in danger of being hurt by the Nazi troops
C.he wanted to help the Jewish families in danger
D.he wanted to adopt the Jewish children there
40.From this passage we can infer________.
A.The Jewish children would be killed if not being transferred
B. nobody wanted to be the dangerous volunteer helping Winton
C. every rescued child survived the war
D. Winton has more than 7,000 “children” when he is 100 years old
41.Wilton is a person of________.
A.positiveness and optimism
B.determination and perseverance
C.challenge and kindness
D.bravery and selflessness

My father traveled from Southern California a few weeks ago to go skiing with his friends. This is an annual event, in which he and several of his club friends stay at a local hotel, dine out, and ski. And because this trip is planned far in advance, they go regardless of the snow conditions. This particular week there was just a small amount of man-made snow. When I asked him how the skiing was, he informed me “It was the best day ever!”
Dad has been skiing for over forty years, in every imaginable condition. He has skied in snowstorm where you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. He has skied in sunny days of fresh powder and no crowds. Regardless of the circumstances or conditions, whenever I asked, “How was skiing Dad?” — he always responded the same way, “It was the best day ever!”
Skiing is not the only thing that makes Dad happy. He has the same positive attitude about his job. For twenty-five years he was a fireman, and if you asked him how he liked it, he would tell you that it was “the best job ever!” After retiring from the fire department, he became a traffic warden. And again, he said it was a wonderful job and he loved it!
Maintaining this positive, happy attitude has not always been easy for Dad, either. But on occasion where he has been negative, he always pulls himself out of it and works himself back to that optimistic place of delight in life.
Dad's attitude towards life has taught me an invaluable lesson: life holds such hope and promise for the person who positions his attitude for joy and success. And I have had the pleasure of being raised and loved by a father who usually chooses to stay in a positive frame of mind, which helps him to face each new situation expecting the best outcome.

A.he liked skiing every winter
B.he took part in a competition

Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves.University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.
“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度),” said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU.“The radioisotope (放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”
Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS).Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.
“People hear the word ‘nuclear’and think of something very dangerous,” he said.“ However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace?makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”
His new idea is not only in the battery's size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体).Kwon's battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.
“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶格结构) of the solid semiconductor,”Kwon said.“By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”
Together with J.David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery's power, shrink its size and try with various other materials.Kwon said that the battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.

Do you sometimes wonder why some animals seem smarter than others? Perhaps you have different pets and some appear wiser and sharper than others. They may learn faster and seem to understand more. What is the difference? Can you help change things to make them smarter?
The difference can be accounted for in many ways.Sometimes genetic factors have a lot to do with many things. In my work on animal behavior consulting, the best animals are those that are directly bred (繁殖) from wild animals.
You can make_a_difference in your animal's IQ,despite its inherited background. It is really rewarding and fun to help them onto the path of education! How do you do it? To be the most effective, start right after you acquire the animal.Ideally, this will be at a young age. However,it is possible to work with an older animal. The main difference is that it might take a bit longer to do.This is because older animals are more like senior citizens and can become confused more easily. They can be slower in their reactions and responses,or in grasping new concepts.
Increasing intelligence could be compared to raising a baby.As they develop they are more responsive to different things. You have to expose them to the world and introduce them to new toys, colors, tastes, and environments, bit by bit. This also includes introducing them to people of different ages, animals and many other things.
All animals are different. Some will adapt better than others. You should start this work at a young age to increase their IQ.Have fun with your pets. They love you and can teach you some wonderful things.Give them something in return by opening up their world and helping them to understand many different things.
56.What is the most important and possible reason for some pets' being smarter than others? (no more than 5 words)

When I was in high school, I had an awful experience. At that time I was so brave and outgoing as the others. Because of that, a boy name Big Tom would do all kinds of bad things to me. I was scaring to see him.
So yesterday, a friend told me that Big Tom wanted to see me and invited me to dine out. I agreed. We met in a bar and I was so happy that nothing went well. By the end of that night, Big Tom apologized for what he has done to me. Now we have become close friends.
In our life, everyone may make mistakes. What counts most are that we have the courage to correct them.

2.D despite=in spite of prep.
5.D should have done
6.B (常与oneself连用或作被动式)使忙碌,使从事(+in/with); abandon与oneself连用,使放纵;使听任(+to)。
pick up“学会”,A项符合句意。
应选from where。因为关系副词where前加from可表示in/on/at/to which,而不能用from which。
Because Tom was surprised and afraid, he rushed out of the house.
11.C for certain“无疑地,确定地”,是一个固定用法,相当于without doubt, for sure;for certainty应为for a certainty才对。
12.A keep time“走时准确”,是习惯用法,tell time“报时”,observe time “守时”,strike表“鸣钟”时,常用结构为“strike the hours(每小时报时一次); strike 12这钟刚敲12点”。
13.B wind sth. up“上(钟或表)的弦;上发条”。
14.D set a clock / watch “对钟;对表;将闹钟等定时”。
17.C make sb.do sth. / get sb.to do sth.
如:This watch neither gains nor loses.
broke“打碎”; tore“撕毁”; cut“切碎”。
25.B but前有实义动词do时,but后要接省to的动词不定式。
26.A keep(on)doing sth.,
27.B tell the time
由第三段中but at the last minute, her shift(换班)at the hospital had been changed to see her son's performance.
Penny bent over the senseless boy 和下一段的After his recovery可以推出revived的意思为“苏醒;醒了过来”,与senseless(昏迷,没有知觉)相对。
最后一段中 “...65.2 percent of the husbands and 62.9 percent of the wives think that compromise and tolerance are necessary in their marriage.”
从第二段的第二句话“There, he volunteered as an aid in a refugee camp where...”

When I was in high school, I had an awful experience. At that time I was so brave and outgoing as others. Because of that, a boy Big Tom would do all kinds of bad things to me. I was to see him.
yesterday, a friend told me that Big Tom wanted to see me and me to dine out. I agreed. We met in a bar and I was so happy that went well. the end of that night, Big Tom apologized for what he done to me. Now we have become close friends.
In our life, everyone may make mistakes. What counts most that we have the courage to correct them.

The Founding of a Republic, directed by Huang Jianxin, has new breakthroughs in some ways. It describes a series of stories that occur during 1945 to 1949. The main line of the film is preparations for the first session of the CPPCC National Committee conference, reflecting the new situation before China was founded. The play focuses on the relations among Mao Zedong and Song Qingling, Li Jishen, Zhang Lan, the three later elected Vice President. It is designed to replicate the deep friendship between the Chinese Communists and the Chinese democracies in the long period.
The Founding of a Republic is new in perspective and also has a new theme. It fully demonstrates the leader's inner world and restores the leaders to an ordinary person. All things considered, this is a real masterpiece.

A couple from Miami, Bill and Simone Butler, spent sixty-six days in a life-raft(救生艇)in the seas of Central America after their boat sank.
Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales(鲸鱼).“They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water.
For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water—two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw(生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish until something very strange happened. Some sharks(鲨鱼)came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface. I caught them with my hands.”
About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea, their life-raft was beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up. They couldn't stand up. So the captain carried them onto his boat and took them to Costa Rica. Their two months at sea was over.

Ⅰ.1.abandoned 2.occupied 3.drowned 4.rescuing 5.eventually 6.overlooking 7.survivors 8.wounded 9.condemn 10.invaded
it为形式主语,“to have.”
(be) shocked at the news of...“听到……
5.D declare sth. open
last“持续”,符合句意;cover“覆盖”;reach“到达”;play“表演”;A、B、C三项不符句意。
spread from...to...“从……
本句句型是“It will be+时间段+before”从句。
1.A order“点(菜),命令,订货”;make“做,制作”;arrange“安排,筹划,排列”;demand“要求”。由前面的my friends and I went to a fast food restaurant可知作者和朋友去了快餐店,并且从1题后面的hamburgers and Coca Cola可知作者和朋友“点餐”了,所以此处要用ordered。
6.A take a bite of的意思为“咬一口”,从空格后面的a bite of his sandwich可知他是正要吃三明治。
11.C 从后面的“my friends and I went to a table and sat there”可知作者和自己的朋友“不知道该做什么了”,所以此处要用what to do。
13.B 从前面的the man came out of the washroom可知男子从洗手间出来了,并且从第14空后面的I thought he was going to ask for...
17.D 从下文的without even finishing his food可知那名男子“离开了”,所以此处要用walked away。
在第二自然段的第一句就告诉我们after they left Panama, Simony, they met some whales说他们是在离开了Panama后,到Simony时遇见的whales,故选C。
They started to hit the side of the boat, and then suddenly we heard water.也就是说是the whales broke the side of the boat。
先是heard water,然后jumped into the life-raft,然后watched the boat go under water,之后their boat sank, 最后stayed in the life-raft,故选D。
They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water-two things which saved their lives可知:a fishing-line和a machine救了他们的命。
After fifty days at sea...我们知道:the couple是太虚弱所以不能站起来,而不是too excited to stand up;是由船长carried them onto his boat而不是they climb onto the boat;而救生艇早在出事后的50天就坏掉了,而不是获救当天开始坏的,所以A、B、C都可以排除,D项为正确选项。
Ⅴ.1.We should declare war on the old customs.
2.Losing hope of life, he abandons himself to drinking every day. 3.It will be eight years before we meet. 4.We can see the river from where we live. 5.Scientists have made a major breakthrough in the treatment of cancer.

A
Black Americans have served with honor in every American military action, though this fact is often omitted in history books. Even though black men almost had to beg to be allowed to serve in the Revolutionary War, they went on to serve well. Two black men, Oliver Cromwell and Prince Whipple, were with Washington when he crossed the Delaware on Christmas Day, 1776, to attack the British at Trenton. A black man named Estabrook captured the Royal Army's general Prescott Newport, and Peter Salem, a black, killed Major Pitcairn as he was savoring his expected victory at Bunker Hill.
Even though they were forced to serve in separated units, black soldiers distinguished themselves in combat. This was despite the fact that whites had long believed that blacks could neither command nor use firearms. In 1863, William Carney of the Massachusetts Colored Infantry received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his role in battles with the Plains Indians. Isaiah Dorman, Coster's black scout, served and died at the Little Big Horn in 1876.Henry Flipper was the first black graduate of West Point in 1877.
In World War Ⅰ, 40,000 black American combat soldiers served with the French command. Neither U.S. nor British commanders would use these men. But Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts, soldiers in the 369th Infantry's black “Hellfighters” were still the first Americans to win the Croix de Guerre, France's top military award.
During World War Ⅱ over 600,000 black men and women served in the armed forces, including some 400,000 who served overseas. Dorie Miller, a black mess attendant in navy, was one of our first heroes in this war. At Pearl Harbor during the Japanese sneak attack, he manned a machine gun and shot down four planes. The black fighter pilots of Benjamin Davis, Jr. distinguished themselves throughout the war. They served most courageously during the Italian campaign. During the war in Vietnam, mainly because of civil rights pressures in America but also owing to the fine record of black military units, all American forces were fully integrated. Once again blacks played vital roles. And 13.2 percent of all war deaths were of blacks, even though blacks constitute only 11 percent of all Americans. Black American soldiers continue to serve their land well.

There are stories about two U.S. presidents,Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, which attempt to explain the American English term OK.We don't know if either story is true, but they are both interesting.
The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact,he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson,he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said.If he approved of a paper, he would write “all correct” on it.The problem was that he didn't know how to spell. So what he really wrote was “ol korekt”.After a while,he shortened that term to “OK”.
The second explanation is based on the place where President Van Buren was born,Kinderhook,New York.Van Buren's friends organized a club to help him become President. They called the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported Van Buren was called “OK”.

A.demanding 要求、需要;B.commanding 指挥、控制;C.assuring 确信、放心;D.enjoy 享受……
A. And 13.2 percent of all war deaths were of black, even though blacks constitute only 11 percent of all Americans.
We don't know if either story is true...
President Jackson had very little education.... he had difficulty reading and writing.
第二段最后两句so what he really wrote was “ol korect”.After a while, he shortened that term to “OK”.
Van Buren's friends organized a club to help him become President. They called the club the Old Kinderhood Club and anyone who supported Van Buren was called OK.
