A very long time ago, when the world was just created (创造), the moon was not there and the sun shone all the time. So there was no idea of night and people kept working hard and didn’t know when to sleep. They went to bed only when they were too tired.
One day the Creator visited the men in the fields.
“When did you last water this field ” he asked one of them.
“Today”, answered the man.
He saw a woman with a child. “When was this boy born ”
“Today,” said the woman.
The creator then got to know: without a division (分界) of time, people had no understanding of time. He decided to change it. He told the sun, “You must set in the evening and rise again in the morning. So people will know it’s time to sleep when it is dark.”
But there was a big problem. When the sun went down, everything became dark suddenly. People were so frightened that they ran here and there. They fell down and broke things.
Then the creator decided to give people something else with less light. So he created the moon. People were excited, because they could see at night and did not hurt themselves any more. They slept quietly in the light of the moon and got up the next day when the sun shone brightly.

Last weekend, I went snowshoeing with some friends. A snowshoe is a large plastic frame (塑料框) which you connect to your shoes. It can increase the surface (表面) area of your feet to make you walk more easily on the snow.
At first, it felt a little strange—a bit like wearing flippers (脚蹼) when you swim! However, I often walked in the mountains so I soon liked it. At times, walking uphill in the snow was hard. However, after we reached the top, we all thought it was worth (值得) it! The sights were fantastic. The mountain we climbed was called “Le Tanet” and it was 1,292m high—that’s higher than Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales! After taking photos, we started going down. In some ways, going down the mountain was harder than climbing up.
At the bottom, we had a hot drink in a small house—it was certainly needed after a few hours of walking in the cold!

Dear Li Hua,
I hear your dream is to be an astronaut. Here’s my advice for you.
First, you must study hard. An astronaut should know a lot about space.
Second, you have to learn English well. Astronauts come from many different countries. You need to be good at English so that you can better work and communicate with them.
Third, you must keep healthy. To be an astronaut, you will have to take a lot of training. It will be very tiring.
Lastly, in a spaceship, astronauts live and work in a small place. So it’s important to learn to get on well with others.
I hope your dream will come true one day.
Yours,
Dr. King
