A green light means traffic is moving forty-five miles an hour, yellow means thirty to forty-five miles an hour, and red means heavy traffic cars standing still or moving less than thirty miles an hour.
“See that red light near Austin Avenue(大道)?”the controller asked a visitor.“There's a repair truck fixing the road, and the traffic has to go around it.”
At the Roosevelt Road entrance to the expressway, the light kept changing from green to red and back to green again.“A lot of trucks get on the expressway there,”the controller explained.
“They can't speed up as fast as cars.”
The sensors(传感器)show immediately where an accident or a stopped car is blocking traffic, and a truck is sent by radio to clear the road. The system has lowered the number of accidents by 18 percent. There are now 1.4 deaths on Chicago's expressways for each one hundred million miles travelled, while in other parts of the country there are 2.6.
Traffic experts say that the Chicago system is the“coming thing”.Systems like Chicago's are already in use on some expressways in Los Angeles and Houston.“Chicago has taken the lead,”says New York City's traffic director, and he adds,“We are far behind...”

Tips are generally modest in Turkey(a few percent of the price paid),although Americans tend to do their thing and tip big, which is leading Turkish tourism industry workers to expect big tips from Americans who travel to Turkey.
Although the person you tip would prefer Turkish money(TL),you may tip in any country's money so long as you give paper money.Don't give non-Turkish coins,as these cannot easily be exchanged.
RESTAURANTS:Small tips(5% to 10%)are not necessary,but are appreciated in inexpensive restaurants.In luxury(豪华的)restaurants,tip 10% to 15%.
ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES:If a site guardian performs some special service, such as giving you a personal tour,a tip of a few dollars is appreciated.
TAXIS:For taxi drivers, don't tip and just round the fare upwards to a convenient amount. So if the fare is TL9.70,round it up to TL10.(If the fare is TL10.30,the driver may accept just TL10.)
MINIBUS:No tip expected.
AIRPORTS/STATIONS:Every airport, bus station and train station has an official tariff(价目表)for porters.Of course you probably won't see it,so tip about TL2 per bag, which should be plenty. If you actually end up underpaying according to the official tariff, the porter is sure to let you know!
TURKISH BATHROOMS:At the end of your bath all the attendants(and there are lots of them)will line up to“say goodbye” and expect a tip.Share out among them about 15% of the total price of the services you've used.
GUIDED TOURS:Tips to guides and drivers on organized tours are at_your_discretion.Certainly guides and drivers hope for tips, but a good guide or driver will not think less of you for not tipping and a bad guide or driver deserves no tip.You can decide the tip which is meant to thank good service, not his/her payment.
40.What can we conclude from the passage?

B.We'd better give tips in paper money in Turkey.
C.Tips are not allowed in luxury restaurants.

There are two methods by which hydrogen(氢)can be used to power cars. The first way is to use hydrogen to drive the engine,in much the same manner as many cars use gas.The second method is to use the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen in a battery(电池).
The dream of producing hydrogen for the car from water while driving is a long way off,so we are still at the period of batteries and filling the tank with hydrogen gas. This is the most difficult thing for car users and producers. There are only sixteen hydrogen filling stations in Los Angeles and none in 99% of other cities worldwide.
Indeed, some of the big name automobile producers have pulled out of the race to put the first practical hydrogen car on the streets.Ford and GM have announced that they are pulling out in America and so has Renault in France.
However, the Japanese companies are going on with it.In fact,Honda introduced its first hydrogen fuel car in 1999.They are now working on the second-generation hydrogen cars known as the FCX Clarity.Guess where you can buy these cars? There is only one city in the world.Yes,Los Angeles, because of its filling stations.
Honda thinks that they could go into full-scale production of the FCX Clarity by 2020,if the world is prepared for them by then.Hyundai has on-going plans to make hydrogen fuel cars and says that they will be produced in 2012.Daimler also says that they would be producing 100,000 hydrogen fuel cars in 2012-2013.
Then there are hydrogen powered buses in several European cities including Amsterdam,Barcelona,Hamburg,London,Luxembourg and Madrid.Lotus, the maker of London taxis, has announced that they want to produce some hydrogen powered taxis in time for the London Olympics.
So the hydrogen vehicles(交通工具)are out there and the numbers will be growing fairly soon. However, getting fuel is not the only difficulty for the average motorist.
44.Which of the following things may take the longest to come true?
A.Using the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen in batteries to power cars.
B.Using water to produce hydrogen for cars while driving.
C.Hyundai's developing hydrogen fuel cars.
D.Developing hydrogen powered taxis.
45.Which of the following statements about hydrogen powered vehicles is TRUE?
A.Hydrogen powered cars were not introduced to the public until the 21st century.
B.Hydrogen powered buses can only be seen in America right now.
C.Hydrogen powered taxis produced by Lotus will be used in America soon.
D.Hydrogen powered vehicles are likely to increase in the number soon.
46.The writer wrote this passage mainly to________.
A.tell us the history of hydrogen powered vehicles
B.tell us the present-day situation of hydrogen powered vehicles
C.introduce some Japanese car producers to us
D.introduce several European cities that are using hydrogen powered vehicles

Kids are natural scientists. That may be why they ask so many questions.
Younger kids take up science and math with amazing enthusiasm, yet as they get older they often lose their excitement.Children look on scientific exploration as play, but as they get older they start to connect it with big heavy books, long worksheets and a lot of really confusing words.
What a tragedy! We had their attention, they were listening, they were participating, they were learning and then we lost it to boredom.
We need our kids to play more.More play brings up basic scientific concepts(概念).Being familiar with basic scientific concepts brings about exploration which leads to research.Once they are researching, they are completely into the learning.
My boys built a small 9-hole golf course next to our driveway one day.It was a great product of science. They dug out the holes and channels to guide the golf ball. They played with architecture(建筑学)with a series of pipes they had found in the garage. They tested speed and momentum(动量)by creating one of the holes across the driveway. They experienced biology when deciding which front yard plants could be used as a part of the course and which needed to be pulled up.
If I had sent them out to the yard to build a 9-hole golf course,it would have never happened. It was because it was their idea that it worked.I try to tell them some of the concepts after the fact. When they ask about something,I try to relate it back to something they have built, experienced,or felt.I try to give them a vocabulary around what they already know.
An afternoon can change the way kids look at the world. Not bad for a day of play.
47.What can we learn about kids' attitudes towards science from the first three paragraphs?
A.Kids think they are born to work as scientists.
B.Younger kids begin to learn science on purpose.
C.Older kids often link science with boring things.
D.Children's taking an interest in science is a tragedy.
48.By building the small golf course, the writer's boys learnt about all of the following things EXCEPT________.
A.speed B.momentum
C.biology D.agriculture
49.If the writer had forced the boys to build a small golf course, they might have ________.
A.asked her some related scientific concepts
B.made a better golf course than the one they had built
C.asked their friends to help them with the work
D.got bored and refused to follow the writer's directions

connect to意为“与……连接”。
4.C 句意:此项法律通过后,那个州的犯人允许每天有两个小时的户外活动。permit许可,允许。promise允诺;agree同意;admit承认。
5.D 考查动词短语辨析。句意:我们本打算走侧道到达主街,可道旁一块标牌上写着:“此路不通”。get along“前进,与……友好相处”,通常和with搭配;get around“到处旅行,四处走动”;get away“走开,逃脱”;get through“完成,通过,到达”。
permit“专指准许某人做某事、去某地或拥有某物的书面凭证”;allowance“指允许可得到的食物、用品等的份额,尤指允许得到的钱款,故常作津贴解”;leave“主要表示准许度假,休病假、事假,也可指批准的假期本身”;agreement“协议,一致”。

由于the TV set在定语从句中作宾语,所以可以省略关系代词that或which。 The TV set that/which he has had repaired works well now.主句为The TV set works well now.
on time准时;at one time同时;all the time一直;in no time立刻,很快。
根据答语中The more,the happier.

由第二段最后一句可知本句中的“it”指代前半句刚提到的a repair truck fixing the road。

BATHROOMS:...Share out among them about 15% of the total price可知答案。
You can decide the tip可知给导游和司机多少小费是“由你决定”的。
The dream of producing hydrogen for the car from water while driving is a long way off可知B项所述内容在短期内难以实现;而A项所述内容已经实现了;C和D项所述内容都已被排上日程,近期内将会实现。
从第七段的the hydrogen vehicles are out there and the numbers will be growing fairly soon可知D项正确。

They played with architecture with...They tested speed and momentum by creating...以及They experienced biology when deciding...
If I had sent them out to the yard to build a 9-hole golf course,it would have never happened. It was because it was their idea that it worked.

As everybody knows, the traffic problem in our city is becoming more and more serious.
During the rush hours every morning and afternoon, the roads are very crowded. There are traffic jams from time to time. The accident rate becomes higher than before.I think that it is high time for the city government to take some measures to solve this problem.
First of all,we should repair the roads, for some of the roads are in bad condition and it is difficult for drivers to go through.Secondly,we should build more overpasses so as to cut down traffic jams.Thirdly, the production of cars should be controlled, for there are too many cars moving on the roads every day.
I believe as long as these measures are taken, the traffic problem will be solved or at least the accident rate will be lowered.I do hope our government will accept my suggestions.

Some people think they have an answer to the troubles of traffic jams and air pollution in large cities.Their answer is the bicycle,or“bike”.
In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day.In New York city, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work, there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines.
For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bike riders. For example, they want the city to draw special lanes—for bicycles only—on some of the main streets, because when bike riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be accidents.Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.
But no bicycle lanes have been drawn yet.Not everyone thinks it is a good idea.Taxi drivers say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.
The city government has not yet decided what to do.It wants to keep everyone happy.Only on weekends,Central Park—the largest open place in New York—is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.
