A
(2013·广东高考)Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear. Children know this very well. Fred Epstein, in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of his friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.
Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes. Dr. Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.
The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid. “Maybe I could go as Superman,” he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume(戏装), but finally she agreed.
The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation.
The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could. Just as Dr. Epstein puts it,“If you can dream it, you can do it.”
It doesn't mean that you should dress as a superhero for your next job interview. But, next time you are tested in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it. Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.

Long ago, poems were recited out loud instead of being written down. When the Greeks first started the Olympics, they held poetry contests as well as athletic competitions.
Now,poetry competitions have been revived(恢复).This year 120,000 high school students competed in the first Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest, performing poems from memory for $100,000 in prizes.
The first competitions were held in classrooms. The winners went on to school-wide contests, and then they competed in city and state competitions. Finally, the 50 state champions, along with the District of Columbia champion came to Washington,D.C.for the last showdown. After the 51 champions competed against one another,12 went on to the finals. Then the field was narrowed to five. The final five had one last chance to“perform”a poem. The overall champ,Jackson Hille,a high school senior from Ohio, won a $20,000 scholarship.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started Poetry Out Loud because they realized that hearing a poem performed is a different experience from reading it on a page.
It's not just a matter of saying the words in the right order. It's the tone of voice, the pauses, the gestures, and the attitude of the person performing that bring the words to life.“Each time we hear somebody recite a poem,we find something fresh and interesting about it,”says National Public Radio Broadcaster Scott Simon, master of ceremonies for the finals.Hearing it in a new voice offers something new to the listener.

Rome wasn't built in a day, and the Internet didn't come out of a golden egg. Many of today's creations were born of people who had creative ideas, but who did not stop at simply having an idea. They took one brick of capital (资本), another brick of knowledge, perhaps a brick or two of family and friends, and built their empires brick by brick.
If you want to build an online empire, you cannot settle for simply having a website full of articles, or a website full of pictures—there are already thousands of sites like that,so you need to come up with something new and creative.
So if you are starting to build something up, ask yourself: what do you really want to do, and what are you really good at? Believe it or not, you can make money at something that you are an expert in, and you need to know what that is.
Remember, having an online empire does not mean that you have to do it alone. You can take your_friends along with you.Having a friend advertise your services online is a good way to attract more visitors to your empire.
Building an online empire, you will have to be prepared to not only come up with creative ideas, but to carry your ideas through.Talk to people who have already succeeded in building their own empires.Talk to people who are struggling.Join a mailing list that will help you get through your struggle to achieve your goal.
As you move forward, you will find that you can help other people, and you will have a good many stories to tell—not to mention a lot of money in the bank.
If you learn the real secrets of creating a long?term stable online business then you will have enough money to retire on.

[1]The quickest way for you to lose potential friends is to put yourself down all the time.People who do this,no matter what's going on in their lives, are very tiresome and drain(耗尽)everyone's energy.
[2]We've all been the victims of self-deprecation(自我贬低)before.We lost our confidence in ourselves and used language that conveyed to others we were incapable of doing things. Now this has changed a lot as we quickly recognized it or our friends, family and colleagues would ask us why we were putting ourselves down and hopefully we would get out of self-deprecation mode and regain our confidence.
[3]For some people they have developed the art of self-deprecation.They draw people in and make people feel sorry for them and thus offer help. This quickly becomes tiresome and the person who is helping all the time will start to avoid the person putting himself down.
[4]Self-deprecation can be an indicator of some form of mental illness. It can also be an indicator of some kind of emotional wound in one's life such as abuse. Many women who suffer from domestic abuse are prone to(易于)self-deprecation.Therefore,we as colleagues, friends and family have a duty to understand what is going on in their life and help them get through difficult times.
[5]If you constantly say to yourself you ________,guess what-you won't be able to do it.If you don't do things you will sink further into the“can't-do”attitude and try even less activities. The less you try to do,the lower your self-esteem will become. This is a circle which is hard to break if not recognized.

There's no doubt that...; There's some doubt whether...。
结婚”时是及物动词,后面直接跟宾语;get/be married to sb.“和……
8.C build up one's strength
从“How terrible!”
hold down“控制,抵制”;hold up“举起(提出,抓举,支持住,阻挡)”;hold out“伸出;坚持”;hold to“固执(坚持)”。
it is / was the first time +that-clause
A、C、D三项作名词用时皆可接to,但“voyage”意为“航海,航行”,“way”意为“方式,方法;道路”,“visit”意为“参观,访问,到(某地)”,比较A、C、D的意思,显然D项符合题意。
首先排除A、C两项,“introduce sth. to sb.”
此处与上文“by carrying hunters over parts of the country”相对应,故选A项。
A项的用法是tell sb./sth. 或tell sb.+ clause;B项的用法是announce to sb. that clause;C项为persuade sb.(not) to do sth.;D项为prevent sb./sth. (from) doing sth.。
carry out意为“执行,完成,实施”;take out意为“取出,拿出”;point out意为“指点,指明,指出”;work out意为“得出,计算出”。
另外onto one's back常连用,故应排除A项,B项为正确答案。
No,thanks. I can manage it myself,意思是“不用谢,我自己能够应付”,故选C项。
The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman...
根据最后一段中的...do it in your mind first.以及So,let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.
根据第一段...to provide every child with access to a complete and competitive education...
The President will urge states to introduce high standards across all publicly funded early learning setting...
和第四段...remove ineffective teachers from the classroom及第五段He supports the expansion of high-quality charter schools可知,A、B、D三项都是Obama要采取的措施,而C项不是。
America will regain its lost ground...in the world by 2020可推断,答案为D。
根据第六段...all Americans should enroll in at least one year of higher education or job training可知,答案为B。

With summer vacation drawing near, some parents are anxious to hunt for summer crammer schools for their children. To get more money, many summer crammer schools have come into being under the name of famous teachers. In this situation, quite a few parents enter their children for the schools. However, as a result, not only do their children fail to improve their study but also the parents are cheated of a lot of money. Meanwhile, their children waste the valuable summer vacation.
So I think parents should have the right and reasonable options for their children as to the training class. In some way leaving the children to nature is a better idea.

Dear Sir,
Yesterday afternoon,we had a discussion on the question:“Would you go shopping with your friend at his request while you are going over your lessons?”
My classmates Li Lei and Tom had different viewpoints. Li Lei thought that he couldn't refuse his friend's request even though his study would be affected. But Tom didn't think so. He said he wouldn't meet all requests from his friends. Studying was more important than shopping.
In my opinion, either Li Lei or Tom is right to some extent. We may meet our friends' requests, but that depends. If we have difficulties,we should let them know.
Yours,
Li Hua

There's a new kind of game on the Internet. When you play it, you do more than simply get points or have fun. As you play, you help computers develop new skills.
Computer scientist Luis von Ahn created the games as a way to solve problems that are difficult for computers, even though the problems may seem simple to us. Computers, for example, have a hard time identifying a cat in a photo, while we can spot a cat at a glance.
The idea is to invent online games that people enjoy playing. Then, as people play, they provide data that researchers can use to improve computers. The players don't know that they're helping out. They're just having fun.
“The potentials huge,” says computer scientist Manuel Blum, one of von Ahn's colleagues at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “These games with a purpose make use of humans in a wonderful way.”
By harnessing the brainpower of thousands of people playing games on the Internet, computers may learn how to identify pictures, translate Web pages into forms that blind people can use, develop common sense, understand foreign languages, and more.
Our brains are made to collect and process lots of information about what we see, von Ahn says.
Computers, on the other hand, simply “see” a grid of dark and light dots, called pixels. It's not obvious to a machine that a certain blob is a cat. Likewise a computer doesn't know that a tiger, a cartoon feline, and a kitty curled up on a couch all belong in the same category: cat.
“If you give me an image of some common animal, I can tell you if it's a cat or a dog,” von Ahn says. “Computers can't do that yet.”
Because computers can't make such distinctions, search engines have a hard time finding images on the Internet, and getting people to label each image doesn't work well. There are billions of images, and the job is pretty boring.
1.The new kind of game on the Internet created by Luis von Ahn can mainly________.
A.help us have fun at any time
B.help the computer spot a cat
C.help the computer solve problems
D.help us relax by playing it

A.we can identify everything while computers can't do it at all
B.the computers do what people tell them to, which we can not do
C.our brains can collect information while computers can only identify dots
D.we can recognize a computer while a computer can not recognize us
4.Computer scientists control the brainpower of people playing games on the Internet to________.
A.get personal information to make lots of money
B.make computers faster and safer than before

come from the direction来自……
由固定结构fix one's eyes on/upon.

“……的梦想”应该用the dream of sth. /doing sth。dream作动词时,“梦想做某事”也用dream of doing,而不能用dream to do。 His dream of going abroad was never realized.

所以选but。

“A serious attack on the fantasy story for children comes from those who do not wish children to be frightened,” writes C. S. Lewis in an essay named Three Ways of Writing for Children. Those who say that children must not be frightened mean two things. Firstly, they mean that we mustn't do anything likely to give children fears, and secondly, they want to keep out of their minds that they are born into a world of death, violence (暴力), wounds, good and evil (邪恶). C. S. Lewis says he agrees with the first reason, but not the second.
He goes on to comment, “Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel(残酷的)enemies, let them at least hear of brave fighters and heroic courage. By limiting your child to perfect and nice stories of child life in which nothing alarming ever happens, they would fail to face fears and hardships.” “It would be nice,” he continues, “if no little boy in bed ever hears a frightening sound. But if he is to be frightened, I think St. George, or any bright champion in armor, is a better comfort than the idea of the police.”
Bruno Bettelheim, a well-known child psychologist, also points out that fantasy stories provide children with a valuable education about good and evil. He believes that all children have many personal fantasies filled with fears and fantasy stories comfort them and offer solutions. Happy endings tell them that solutions and hope are real and model the kind of happy life children want to find.
A good fantasy suggests rather than teaches possible answers to life. It's believed that reading fantasies quickens the ability to get and put ideas from books to reality. It's what good literature does-it makes life larger.

Berlin-Germany's University of Heidelberg says a researcher has given evidence that apparently confirms(证实)the identity of the woman behind the Mona Lisa's famous smile.
She is Lisa del Giocondo, wife of Florentine businessman Francesco del Giocondo, according to notes written in the margins of a book by a friend of Leonardo da Vinci as the artist worked on the masterpiece, the school said in a statement.
The discovery by a Heidelberg University library manuscript(手稿)expert Armin Schlechter appears to confirm what has long been suspected. It is also an answer that has been in plain(清楚地)view for centuries: the Mona Lisa is known as Lisa del Giocondo in Italian.
Lisa del Giocondo was first named as the woman in the painting by Italian writer Giorgio Vasari in 1550, who also dated the work at between 1503 and 1506, the university said.
But because Vasari relied on anecdotal(轶事的)evidence, there was always doubts about the identification, and Leonardo is not known to have made any notes about the model's identity himself.
Mixing the mystery, unclear references in 1517, 1525 and 1540 point to other identifications.
“One possibility discussed is the presentation of an imaginative likeness of a woman, Leonardo's female ideal,” the school said.
But the find by Heidelberg library expert Armin Schlechter settles the matter, according to the university.
In a copy of the works of Roman philosopher Cicero, Agostino Vespucci, a Florentine official and friend of Leonardo's, wrote in the margins that da Vinci was working on a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. He dated his notes October 1503,also helping fix the exact time Leonardo was working on the painting.
“All doubts as to the identity of the Mona Lisa are eliminated(清除)by one source,” the university said.
The discovery was actually made in 2005, but was not widely known until a German radio station last week aired it in a report.
