In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources(资源),the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise.Actually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm.People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable(可持续的) ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words,we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.
Today, sustainable development is a popular trend in many countries.According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade.China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition,we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil(棕榈油),which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%.
Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets.First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions(排放)and targets for saving and reusing energy.Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from traditional model to a sustainable one.
The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of a growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.

I have to say I usually want to throw up when I hear someone say each of us has a purpose because I realize that as far as most people are concerned it is the cliche I do believe it is true that as humans we all feel that we must be here for a purpose, but I also know that most of us have no idea what that purpose is.
For most people the problem is that they don't believe that they have a passion. I know you hear it all the time:“find your passion”. The key step is hard to make if someone is so numb, that they don't know what their passion could possibly be. Somehow we seem to hang onto our failures and limits more than we do our success, which is just human nature. Stop and think about the things that you have always done well and loved to do,which will help you find your passion.
We should know it's easy to determine our purpose, but your purpose must be combined with your passion. For example, I have been involved in weight lifting and fitness since I was in my twenties and have a great deal of self-taught knowledge about bodybuilding. All I had to do was take an exam from a certifying organization to gain my certification and be a fitness trainer which is my purpose. I had a purpose and passion so I made it at last.
Generally, your purpose must be in the area that you love, enjoy and are passionate(狂热的,热诚的) about and that is why you have chosen to spend time and energy to realize it. Your success will always be greater when you are working in an area that you are passionate about.

A.being a fitness trainer is promising
B.purpose and passion can lead to success
C.it's possible for you to find a purpose

We have learned information about global warming, whether in school, from TV programs,or by overhearing the adults around us.The pieces of information and facts are everywhere, but where on earth does global warming come from? How does it relate to our lives? And what can we do to help?
Let's check out The Down to Earth Guide to Global Warming, written by Americans Laurie David and Cambria Gordon. In the book, the concept of sustainability(可持续性的概念)is compared to the love of your pet.“Even though your cat might pee(撒尿)on your bedspread or your dog might chew your favourite shoes, you still keep it.You don't throw it away.”The planet is also compared to your messy room, and CO2 and temperature“go together like peanut butter and jelly(果酱)”.
While a mere one degree increase in world temperature might seem small,a comparison of a popsicle(冰棒)you can lick(舔)and one you’d have to drink may make your concern for global warming grow.
The book, constructed from 100 percent recycled paper and printed with soy(黄豆)inks, has a chapter“What you can do to stop global warming”.There are tips you might have already known, but the book has more interesting ideas. For example, leading an unplugged(不通电的)life for a day,or considering your career ambitions in light of climate change. From hydrologist(水文工作者)to biofuel(生物燃料)engineer, they are careers that are sustainable and can be realized.
“Kids are the number one influence on their parents. They are guides of change,”said author David.

[1]“Show them the money!”That's what some people are saying for college athletes. They say students who play sports for their school should receive salaries(薪水).
[2]Top athletes should be paid because many of them practice full time,Mark Jameson argues. Rico Cannon,a former college football player, agrees.“Nonathletes can get a job for extra spending money, but many student athletes spend so many hours in training that they don't have time to work,”he explains.“Shouldn't athletes be able to earn extra money too?”
[3]College athletes are about honor and tradition, but they're also a business. With ticket sales, schools have money to build new athletic stadiums and give the coaches high salaries. The cash should be________athletes.They're the ones out on the field or the court working hard for their school.
[4]The money matter has others crying_foul,_though.Kaitlyn Rentala argues that colleges should not pay their athletes,Students are in school to get an education. Playing a sport is an extracurricular(课外的)activity, not a job.If athletes need extra money, they can apply for college scholarships(奖学金).Michael Massett is a middle school teacher and a football and basketball coach. He agrees.“Athletes should be paid with scholarships, like non-athletes are,”Massett explains.
[5]In addition,if colleges pay their athletes, those students might focus more on sports than on their education.“Most students do not become professional athletes after college. If they focus too much on sports, they may not learn the skills they need to get good jobs,”Kate Macrae reasons. Should_teachers_give_students_physical_punishment?_Opinions_differ_on_this_topic. For those who are for it, it produces a better effect than asking or educating students to believe well. If they break the rules, they should answer for what they've done.
Others, however, hold the opposite opinion. For one thing, teachers should respect their students no matter what happens. Anyway, it's natural for students to make some mistakes. For another, this is likely to cause serious results, which may be beyond teachers' expectation.
In my opinion, teachers should take proper measures when finding a student doing something wrong. After all, there are so many other methods that are more effective than physical punishment, for instance, they can give students encouragement and inspiration as well as an envision of a bright future. Besides, teachers should make efforts to make friends with their students. In a word, much can be done to educate students who make mistakes except physical punishment.

(2013·山东高考)George Gershwin, born in 1898,was one of America's greatest composers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old.During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.
Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s.Many of his songs have remained popular as ever.Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way-from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music.Could jazz, some people asked,be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music.Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it.And in that short time,he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue.Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him worldfamous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.
In 1928,Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition(作曲) with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him.She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there,Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家) were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life,to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.
George Gershwin died in 1937,just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old.Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages.People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.

Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music.可知这是惠特曼举办音乐会的原因,不是举办音乐会的结果,因此排除选项D;根据第三段中的最后一句...showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert.
While there,Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. It still remains one of his most famous works.
Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages.
He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.

Public schools in Washington, D.C. provide students with musical instruments for free. When something goes wrong with an instrument, Charles West and Larry Jernigan do the repairs. Both men approach their work with a passion(激情). For them, it's important that students have a joyful experience with music.
The two have worked together for almost 20 years. This year alone, they've fixed about 450 instruments. Both men are musicians and music lovers, so learning to do repairs came naturally.
“I have been a musician all my life,” says West. “I played in an orchestra here in the city. I majored in music in college. I played in an army band.”
Jernigan's musical interests are varied. “I was formerly trained in the piano and guitar. The alto sax and the flute, I picked up while working here.”
In addition to fixing instruments, the two also go to schools to instruct teachers and students on how to make minor repairs on their own.
West believes if children start early and stay involved with music, it enriches other areas of their lives.“I see that in other kids. I see it in myself. I have seen it hundreds of times and it works,” he says. “They learn teamwork. They learn patience and respect.”
But West has concerns about the future of music in the electronic age.
“This instant age has taken away from the sit-down, the patience. And to learn to play an instrument, it takes patience, it takes diligence and it takes time.”
Being able to enjoy music on the job is one of the benefits of the job. Both men agree their best rewards are the students' performances.

What's your favorite type of music? Most people may prefer rock and roll, pop or jazz. These types are most publicized by television and the radio. Country music now would seem to mistakenly belong to the category of rock or pop. Publicity of this category started to drop only after the year 2000, however, it did have its peak years just before the decline(衰落).
What people may not know is that this type of music inspired(促成)rock and roll especially with one of the most important figures in music history—Elvis Presley who is known as the “King of Rock and Roll”. Elvis used to be very famous at a radio program which broadcast country music back in the late 1940's. Country is also influenced by jazz and blues. Rock music too is influenced by jazz and blues but is also heavily influenced by country so that they may even seem similar.
Nowadays, country is closely related to pop due to artists' preference and popular demand. Starting from the 1980's, it slowly divided itself into New and Old Country Music. Legends like Johnny Cash began to slip away because the new perception(理解)of country actually contains pop and his music just doesn't fit the category. Fortunately, country music is still heavily promoted through websites and reviews.
Certain types of music nowadays are linked with different age groups. Classical for the people in the mid 19th century, pop in the 1920's, and then there's country. All these types continue to grow and modernize while still appealing to certain age groups. More modern country music tends to become different in their own ways which makes it even harder to identify them as country while, again, remain appealing only to certain age groups. Active promoters of country music videos, however, seem to appeal to a large number of age groups especially those active in Australia. For as long as country isn't mixed with other types, it will eventually regain(重新获得)its charm as music for all ages.
6.It can be learned from the first paragraph that country music________.

8.Some legends of country music began to slip away because________.
