An Announcement
It was a small town which lay by the coast. Most people there lived by catching fish. The hurricanes often struck the area from July to October. Some of the people died on the sea when their boats were blown over by the high winds. So they paid much attention to the weather forecasts. They were afraid to meet with the hurricanes when they were catching fish on the sea. Each of the families had a radio and people always took them with themselves and listened to them at any time.
It was September.A hurricane attacked the town one night.Plenty of trees were pushed over and all the electric and telephone lines were broken.People couldn't watch TV,or call their friends,or go to work.To their anger, they couldn't listen to the weather forecasts the Town Radio Station broadcast. The food and fresh water would soon be short and the patients couldn't be given medical care-no medicine could be carried there.People didn't know what would happen and they looked anxious.
On the fourth day they read an announcement(通告)on the Town Weekly. It was written,“Recently we have to stop the weather forecast because of the bad weather. We usually get the forecasts from the airport. But the roads are all blocked by the fallen trees and stones.Whether or not we'll be able to broadcast the weather forecast tomorrow depends on the weather!”

An earthquake happens when two plates rub together. The earth plates travel in different directions and at different speeds. If one plate is slowly forced underneath the other, pressure builds up until the plates break apart. This process causes the ground to move.It is an earthquake. In other words, earthquakes are the shaking of the earth's surface caused by the earth's rocky outer layer as a result of the energy stored within the earth. The strain within the rocks is suddenly released(释放).
The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and when it happens. If an unpopulated region is struck, there will be low loss of life or property. If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destruction. Many of the areas at risk are largely populated now.Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could produce terrible damage.
Actually, there are several million small earthquakes every year.Large earthquakes such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, cause millions of dollars in damage. In the last 500 years, millions of people have been killed by earthquakes around the world-including 240,000 in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in China.
A 60-second or less earthquake can cause devastation (破坏) that continues for years after the first tremor (小震).In 1972,a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua,Nicaragua.Fifteen years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the country did not have the money necessary to rebuild it.
The shaking of the earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster. It is in the ensuing fires and floods that often the greatest damage occurs. In the 1906 earthquake,it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake can also destroy dams high above a city or valleys, causing floods to sweep down and sweep away everything in their path.
40.Which of the following is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.An earthquake comes from inside the earth.
B.The earth has great energy in storage.

Modern zoos are different from those built fifty years ago.At that time zoos were places where people could go to see animals from many parts of the world.Animals lived in cages with iron bars.Although the zoo keepers took good care of them, many of the animals did not feel comfortable, and they often fell ill.
In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural conditions.Animals are given more freedom in larger places so that they can live as they would in nature.Even the appearance of zoos has changed. There are trees and grass in cages, and water flows through the places the animals live in.There are few bars;instead, there is often a deep ditch, filled with water, which surrounds a space where several sorts of animals live together as they would naturally. In an American zoo,the visitor can walk through a huge special cage that is filled with trees, some small animals and many birds and large enough for the birds to live naturally. In a zoo in New York, with the use of special night light, people can observe certain animals that are active only at night, when most zoos are closed. Some zoos have special places for visitors to watch animals that live in the desert or under water.
Modern zoos not only show animals to visitors, but also keep and save rare animals. For this reason, fifty years from now,the grandchildren of today's visitors will still be able to enjoy watching these animals.
44.It seems that ________ is something most important for animals.
A.eating good food

Autumn and winter are cold and flu seasons-when people are most likely to catch the viruses(病毒)that cause influenza and the common cold.Is the old advice true that dressing warmly will help prevent a cold?Should you take medicine to reduce your temperature,or is it better to let the body treat the infection itself?
Doctor Alvin,a medical expert, knows a lot about cold and flu seasons in California. He says research may be just starting to provide evidence for the long held belief. For example, scientists for years doubted the idea that getting cold and wet might cause colds or flu.But recent studies have shown that low temperatures cause stress on the body. That stress can create conditions more inviting to viruses. So Doctor Alvin believes maybe it does make sense to dress warmly before going outside.
And what about a fever?Doctor Nelson El Amin says if you have a fever, especially a high one,you should drink a lot of water, because it is important.A fever can easily make the body lack water, which does harm to your blood system.Besides, drinking boiled water can help the body fight against the fever and recover.
Finally, when should you treat a fever?Doctor Nelson El Amin says a fever should be treated if it stays at forty degrees centigrade or above for a day or more.A high temperature can damage brain cells. The doctor also believes in treating a fever if it prevents a person from sleeping.
Aspirin and other medicine can all be used to reduce pain and fever. But aspirin should not be given to children because it may have some side effects on them. Also it's wise to keep your distance from people who have got flu in case that you might get infected.
48.What is mainly discussed in the passage?
A.What caused the cold and fever.
B.How to deal with the cold and fever.
C.Medicines that can cure the cold.
D.Doctor Alvin's research work.
49.According to Doctor Alvin,________.
A.the cold and flu are not caused by getting cold or wet
B.getting cold or flu causes no stress on the body
C.it is wise to dress warmly before going out in winter

B.throw up what you eat

D.drink a lot of boiled water
Ⅳ.阅读填句(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Dear Boris,
51
After I had spent a week with my English family, I slowly began to understand their English a little better. 52 Students in my group are from different cities of Britain and their dialects are different too! Some of their accents are quite strong and they also have their own words and expressions.
53 Before I came to England I had thought that fish and chips were eaten every day. That's quite wrong! I get rather annoyed now when I hear all the foolish words about typical English food.
I had expected to see “London fog”. Do you remember our texts about it? We had no idea that most of this “thick fog” disappeared many years ago when people stopped using coal in their homes. But the idea to speak about weather was very helpful. 54 On the other hand, habits are different. People tell me what is typical British here in London is not always typical in Wales or Scotland. 55
But what is ordinary for all British is that they follow traditions(传统). Probably Britain has more living signs of its past than many other countries. And people have always been proud of having ancient(古老的) buildings in capitals, big cities and the countryside.
I will tell you more about Britain in my other letters.
Love from Britain.
A.The weather in London is really changeable.
B.I have difficulty in understanding my classmates.
C.Thanks for your nice letter.
D.The family I live with are friendly.
E.It's very different from what I learned at school.
F.Local habits and traditions are not the same as what we knew.

In the past few years, there have been frequent natural disasters, such as floods, droughts, earthquakes, hurricanes and so on. The disasters have killed millions of people, and destroyed countless homes.
Now more and more people become aware that those disasters have much to do with what we have done to the earth. We have cut down too many trees in the forests, and we have badly polluted the environment. As a result, climates have become abnormal, rainwater rushes down hillsides angrily, and many buildings are destroyed.
The earth is our only home.It is urgent for us to stop damaging it, and to do our best to protect it and make it a lovely place suitable to live in,for we have nowhere to go and survive except where we are now.

Many people like the feeling of the gentle wind in spring. Many people like to see the falling leaves dancing in the wind in autumn. But sometimes, when the wind becomes a storm,it can be very destructive(毁灭性的).
A series of such storms struck the US last month and caused very serious damage.Every year, major storms cause many problems around the world. There is nothing people can do to stop these powerful forces of nature. But new techniques are helping scientists to predict(预测)how, when, and where big storms will happen. The more exact scientists' warnings are,the better people can prepare for the storms.
Predictions are improving.“We've gotten better over the years, especially the last few years,”says Phil Klotzbach,a scientist at an American university. How is a storm formed?Even if scientists know where a storm will happen, winds can suddenly change, carrying the storm to a new direction.“For a hurricane to happen, conditions have to be just right,”Klotzbach says.
First, the ocean water needs to be warm enough so that it evaporates and rises into the air.As it rises, the vapor(水蒸气)cools and turns back into liquid. This process gives off heat. This produces energy like an engine that causes winds to increase. It drives the formation of a hurricane.
If wind speed reaches 40 miles per hour, the system is called a “tropical storm”,and it gets a name.At 75 miles per hour,it becomes a hurricane.
Hurricanes that hit the US start when a thunder-storm forms off the coast of Africa.Storms also develop over tropical waters in other parts of the world.
On average,60 or 70 storms form off Africa every year.About 10 of them get names. There are usually about six hurricanes. Two tend to be very big, with winds of 115 miles per hour or higher.
