The weather was terrible that night. The summer thunderstorm had knocked out the power.Luckily, there was enough candlelight flickering on the kitchen table. With the candlelight,I could see the card I was writing to my husband's cousins in Finland.
Dear Heli and Risto,
You are on my mind tonight because we are using the candles you gave us when you visited us two years ago. There was a horrible summer thunderstorm this evening and the power went out,and your candles were just what we needed. They have lit our dinnertime, the bedrooms and now I am sitting by one in the kitchen...
What I didn't say to Heli and Risto is that we never burned the candles before because they, well, smell like a campfire. And so they stood in iron candlesticks until we needed them.
I'm so thankful that we had candles on hand that dark night. And I'm equally as thankful that I had a beautiful card on hand, too,or I would have let the opportunity to keep in touch with faraway family escape. It would have turned into another one of those moments when the thought of sending a card crossed my mind but never actually happened.
The candle burned slowly. After I finished my card to Finland,I enjoyed looking through the rest of my “Someone Cares” greeting cards. The air was fresh and cool, and I had cards and enough light to write.I found a birthday card for my nephew's 10th birthday,a thinking-of-you card for my aunt, and a fun greeting card for an old friend and I began writing.Candles and cards—two things that make a thunderstorm into the perfect storm.

American teenagers hear it all the time from their parents,“Are you listening to me?Turn down that music or you'll hurt your ears.” A new study has found the parents may be right.
The study has found that many young people in the United States do not hear as well as they used to.One out of five American teenagers have some hearing loss. That is a 30% increase in the past fifteen years. One out of twenty teens have a large hearing loss. That is a fifty percent increase.
The researchers used results of hearing tests taken in the past years. They have found that boys are more likely to have hearing problems than girls. The age or race of the teens who were tested had no effect on their chances of a hearing loss. The researchers say they are not sure why some teenagers are losing their hearing. Not enough studies have been done and more are needed. Some say the causes may be found in their diet, exposure to poisons,or in their genes.Others believe that listening to loud music on MP3 players with earphones is the major cause.
Researchers think that some teenagers do not realize that they are listening to music at very loud levels.Researchers suggest parents stand next to their children while they are wearing earphones. If the parents can hear the music, the sound is too loud.Teenagers should set the volume control on their music players to somewhere between one-half and two thirds the highest level, never louder.
Even a small hearing loss can affect a child's social development.Communication skills and grades in school can also suffer.Doctor Eavey says,“What we're seeing is a big jump in the prevalence(患病率)of hearing loss in a very short time,in less than one generation.”

Who are these people rushing by you in the street?More than 215 million people now call America “home”,but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become “American”is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of “side-by-side” living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their customs and habits. They join the general American society only in certain areas of their lives—such as in schools, business, and sports—but they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially and at home. This living “side-by-side” has both advantages and disadvantages.Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from one another. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food, and social customs in America. Ⅴ.阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
E-mail may be the most important, unique method for communicating and developing relationships since the telephone. First of all,____________. Anyone who can use a word processor can also write an e-mail message without difficulty. Secondly, it saves time and money. It costs nothing more than your time. No paper expense, no postage and no envelope expense. People also find it familiar and safe because it is similar in many respects to writing letters but avoids the annoyances of addressing envelopes, licking stamps, and trips to the mail box.
Of all the methods for developing relationships on the Internet, e-mail is the most common and perhaps the most powerful. Although friendships and romances may indeed begin in chat rooms, instant messages, blogs, or other environments, these relationships almost always expand into e-mail as a way to deepen the communication. It is a more private, more reliable, less chaotic way to talk. Even when other online tools improve greatly by becoming more effectively visual and auditory(听觉的), as in video teleconferencing, e-mail will not disappear. Many people will prefer it because it is a non-visual and non-auditory form of communication. After all, we don't see people rushing out to buy video equipment to add _it to their telephone, even though that technology has been available for some time.
E-mail is not just an electronic mail sent via the Internet. It creates a psychological space in which pairs of people or groups of people communicate with each other. It creates a situation in which human relationships can unfold.

Ⅳ.阅读理解
A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It's remarkable first for what it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sports to business to fashion to science, and the range of comment and special feature(特写)as well, from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art theatre and music.A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: never completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there,in and out, glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the text.A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but for more than the reader is interested in.What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality(时事性),its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now.But immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it means also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient (短暂的)value. For all these reasons, not two people really read the same paper: what each person does is to put together, out of the pages of that day's paper, his own selection and sequence, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need and without wasting time, demands skill and self-awareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading.

(2013·陕西高考)In 1978, I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 km away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to having five days off from duty. Unfortunately, the only one train a day back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I'd hitch a ride(搭便车).
I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally,a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn't give me a lift,I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured(使……放心) me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch,he helped me find a lift home.
Twenty-five years later, in 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the favour I'd been given decades earlier. I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water.
After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me,“You haven't changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.”
I couldn't remember where I'd met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.
