A
Honesty may seem to be the best policy and a value that parents teach their children. However,a new study has suggested that parents lie to their children more often than we think.
“We are surprised by how often parenting by lying occurs to our children,”said researcher Kang Lee of the University of Toronto,Canada.“Our findings showed that even the parents who attached much importance to honesty with their children got involved in it.”
Researchers ran two studies in which parents and students commented on nine situations where a parent lied to a child to either shape behaviour or make it happy. For instance,a parent is embarrassed by a child's crying and says,“The police will come to make sure that you behave if you don't stop crying now.”
To control the emotion of the child, the parent told the child,“a favorite uncle has just died and become a star to watch over you.”
The researchers tested about 130 parents, mostly moms, asking whether they had told similar lies.More than 70 percent said they taught their children that lying is unacceptable.Even so,nearly 80 percent of the parents admitted they had told at least one similar lie.
Researcher Heyman suggested the reasons can be benefiting the parents themselves or protecting the child from scary issues, such as lying about a murder in the news.
“Children sometimes behave in ways that are likely to harm their long-term interests,”said Heyman.“It is common for parents to try out a number of strategies, including lying. When parents are dealing with the demands of getting through the day, concerns about possible long-term negative influences on child-
ren's beliefs about honesty are not necessarily at the front position.”

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard.At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead,I'm sure he isn't really dead. With any luck he isn't even hurt. Why?Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stunt men. That is to say, they perform tricks. There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall onto hard ground but onto empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress.Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! But although their work depends on trick of this sort,it also requires a high degree of skill and training.Often a stuntman's success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is“blown up”in a battle scene,he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.
Naturally stunt men are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed.A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff a thousand feet high. His parachute failed to open, and he was killed. In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only.Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are stunt women too.

A monk called Hai Tong is connected with the Buddha forever. At that time, wild waters brought out many boat accidents and people just put the disaster down to the presence of a water spirit. So Hai Tong decided to make a statue beside the river thinking that the Buddha would bring the water spirit under control. After 20 years' begging from door to door,he finally collected enough money for the plan. When some local government officials tried to get this amount of money,Hai Tong said that they could get his eyeballs but not the money raised for the Buddha. After he dug out his eyeballs, these officials ran away scared. The project was half done when Hai Tong passed away, and two of his disciples(门徒)continued the work. After a total of 90 years' hard work, the project was finally completed.

The zebra belongs to the horse family. One of nature's great mysteries is why the zebra has stripes. One theory is that the stripes help the zebra cool down.On hot days the black stripes get a lot hotter than the white area of the zebra and under the black stripes there are special layers of fat for protection.Hot air then rises off the black stripes, forcing colder air down around the white areas, cooling the zebra down. This, however,is just a kind of theory. The stripes can also confuse predators(食肉动物,掠夺者)when zebras stay with other animals in great numbers.
Zebras have excellent hearing and eyesight and can run at speeds of up to 56 kilometers per hour. They also have a powerful kick that can cause serious injury to a predator, like a lion,or an African wild dog.Usually the lead male of the herd stays at the back of the group to defend against predators if necessary, while the females and youngsters escape danger.
Zebras are herbivores that feed only on plants and live mostly by eating grasses, although they also might eat a bit of the leaves and stems(茎)of bushes. They eat grasses for many hours each day, using their strong teeth.Spending so much time chewing wears the zebras' teeth down,so their teeth keep growing all their lives. As the dry season arrives and the grasses die back, zebra herds travel to find more food and water holes for drinking. Most zebras have no specific territories. They travel from place to place, never staying in one area very long.

[1]Have you ever been in the situation where you really didn't believe what someone was saying?Did you have a sense that something didn't ring true or a feeling that all was not right?Perhaps they were saying“Yes”yet their heads were shaking“No”.
[2]The difference between the words people speak and our understanding of ________ comes from non-verbal communication, otherwise known as“body language.”Body language includes body movements and gestures(legs, arms, hands, head and body),posture, muscle tension, eye contact, skin coloring, even people's breathing rate and sweat.Additionally, the tone of voice, the rate of speech and the pitch of the voice all add to the words that are being used.
[3]By developing your awareness of the signs and signals of body language, you can more easily understand other people, and more effectively communicate with them. There are sometimes subtle(微妙的)-and sometimes not so subtle-movements,gestures,facial expressions and even shifts in our whole bodies that indicate something is going on.We have ways of talking, walking, sitting and standing and they all say something about us,and whatever is happening on the inside can be reflected on the outside.
[4]By becoming more aware of this body language and understanding what it might mean, you can learn to read people more easily. This puts you in a better position to communicate effectively with them. What's more,by increasing your understanding of others, you can also become more aware of the messages that you convey to them.
[5]There are times when we send mixed messages-we say one thing yet our body language reveals something different. This non-verbal language will affect how we act and react to others, and how they react to us.Therefore,in order to communicate more effectively,we should learn the signs and signals of body language correctly.

What are the tips for a healthy lunch? Planning—not much is needed—is the key to a nutritious lunch at work and school.
“Making a healthy lunch takes me 10 minutes in the morning, and buying unhealthy fast food also takes me 10 minutes in the afternoon,”says Wendy Potkay,a busy mother and manager.“It's so easy to turn to eat fatty foods when you're sad or on a deadline. After a while, you realize if you are going to throw something in your mouth, why don't you just choose something healthy?”
How does she achieve this success that defeats so many? And how does she do it in less than 10 minutes? To borrow an old phrase, there are three keys to a healthy lunch:planning, planning and planning.
1.Plan lunch with whole grains, fruit and vegetables.
2.Plan a week's lunch in advance to make shopping easier.Make a list, and follow it. Don't give in to the temptation(诱惑)to buy extra sweets, junk food or fatty meat.
3.Plan for the next day's lunch the night before.Time is short in the morning, and rushing through lunch preparation often means not enough on nutrition or not even buying something from vending machines (自动贩卖机)or drive through windows of fast food restaurants.
Jane Ziegler,a working mother and nutritionist, also supports the idea of planning.“I wash and cut vegetables as soon as I get home from the store so it's not a mess (混乱) when I'm ready to make sandwiches,” she says.
1.The main idea of the second paragraph is ________.
A.how long it takes to make a healthy lunch in the morning
B.a woman's view towards healthy lunch
C.a woman's view towards healthy eating
D.a woman's suggestion of healthy eating
2.What is the main idea of the third suggestion of planning lunch?
A.Plan for the next day's lunch the night before.
B.Time is short in the morning.
C.Always have time for preparing a lunch.
D.Try not buying lunch from vending machines.
3.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.What Jane Ziegler thinks as a working mother.
B.What Jane Ziegler eats for lunch.
C.Jane Ziegler washes and cuts vegetables immediately.
D.Some people also support the idea of planning lunch.
4.This article intends to tell us the idea that ________.
A.healthy lunch is very important
B.people shouldn't skip lunch
C.people should plan lunch in the morning
D.planning is the key to nutritious lunch
5.Which is the BEST title for this passage?

D.Three keys to healthy lunch

Ⅰ.1.wealthy 2.anxious 3.injured 4.normal
5.fit/healthy 6.diet 7.pains 8.Rarely
9.captain 10.lifestyle
be nervous about意为“对……感到紧张”;be anxious/worried about意为“为……担心”;be crazy about意为“迷上……,对……
be anxious about相当于be worried about,意为“为……担心”.be on a diet或go on a diet意为“节食”。
7.C 句意:你能说出一些和吸烟有关的疾病吗?connected with smoking在句中作后置定语,修饰illnesses,相当于定语从句which/that are connected with smoking。
8.A be fit to do sth.
No pains,no gains意为“不劳则无获”,故选B项。
at all常用于否定句,表示“一点儿也不”;at most至多;at once立刻,马上,均不符合题意。
15.B would rather
3.B 根据下文“...often improve a child's appetite(经常能增进孩子的食欲)”暗示,可知B项attractively(有吸引力地)符合题意。
9.D take sth.for granted
14.A 根据eat all at once及后面的意思可知应选A。
18.A so that表示目的。
19.D on no conditions是固定搭配,意为“决不”。
Plan for the next day's lunch the night before.。
Ⅴ.1.The man may be connected with crime.
2.The child was happy to see the cat jumping around him. 3.He was caught in the heavy rain. It was why he was ill. 4.Listen to me carefully and do as you are told. 5.I would rather stay home and have a good rest.

Your body, which has close relations (关系) with the food you eat,is the most important thing you own,so it needs proper treatment and proper nourishment (营养).The old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is not as silly as some people think. The body needs fruit and vegetables because they contain vitamin C.Many people take extra vitamins in pill form, believing that these will make them healthy. But a good diet is made up of nourishing food and this gives all the vitamins you need. (2013·四川高考)On a sunny day last August,Tim heard some shouting. Looking out to the sea carefully, he saw a couple of kids in a rowboat were being pulled out to sea.
Two 12-year-old boys, Christian and Jack, rowed out a boat to search for a football. Once they'd rowed beyond the calm waters,a beach umbrella tied to the boat caught the wind and pulled the boat into open water. The pair panicked and tried to row back to shore. But they were no match for it and the boat was out of control.
Tim knew it would soon be swallowed by the waves.
“Everything went quiet in my head,” Tim recalls(回忆). “I was trying to figure out how to swim to the boys in a straight line.”
Tim took off his clothes and jumped into the water. Every 500 yards or so,he raised his head to judge his progress. “At one point, I considered turning back,”he says. “I wondered if I was putting my life at risk.” After 30 minutes of struggling, he was close enough to yell to the boys,“Take down the umbrella!”
Christian made much effort to take down the umbrella. Then Tim was able to catch up and climb aboard the boat. He took over rowing, but the waves were almost too strong for him.
“Let's aim for the pier(码头),”Jack said. Tim turned the boat toward it. Soon afterward, waves crashed over the boat, and it began to sink. “Can you guys swim?”he cried. “A little bit,”the boys said.
Once they were in the water, Tim decided it would be safer and faster for him to pull the boys toward the pier. Christian and Jack were wearing life jackets and floated on their backs. Tim swam toward land as water washed over the boys' faces.
“Are we almost there?” they asked again and again. “Yes,”Tim told them each time.
After 30 minutes, they reached the pier.
6.Why did the two boys go to the sea?
A.To go boat rowing.
B.To get back their football.

A.To take in enough fresh air.
B.To consider turning back or not.
C.To check his distance from the boys.
D.To ask the boys to take down the umbrella.
9.How did the two boys finally reach the pier?
A.They were dragged to the pier by Tim.
B.They swam to the pier all by themselves.
C.They were washed to the pier by the waves.

Ⅰ.1.overweight 2.lungs 3.throat 4.breathes
5.prescription 6.weight 7.awful 8.Insurance
9.questionnaire 10.symptoms
lay-laid-laid意为“放置”;lie down意为“躺下”,其过去式为lay down,故D项正确。
2.D 考查put....into结构。spend搭配的介词应是on或in。
6.B the problem with...
8.B 考查固定词组take a deep breath意为“深呼吸”,相当于动词短语breathe deeply。
have/run a temperature意为“发烧”。
根据第一段“The body needs fruit and vegetables because they contain vitamin C”可知我们人体需要维生素;又根据第二段可知“西方国家有些人由于忙而不注意合理的饮食,结果引起很多疾病”。
根据第一段“The body needs fruit and vegetables because they contain vitamin C.”可知苹果等水果富含人体所必需的维生素。
根据“The list of illnesses caused or made worse by bad eating habits is frightening.”
根据“In the modern western world, many people are too busy to bother(操心)about eating properly. They throw anything into their stomachs...”
本文开始提出“Your body,which has close relations(关系)with the food you eat...”
Two 12-year-old boys...search for a football.
此处的it指的是the wind。
I was trying to figure out how to swim to the boys in a straight line.“我在尽力弄清楚如何以最近的路线游到男孩们那里”可知,此处Tim抬头是为了确认他与孩子们之间的距离。
Tim decided...to pull the boys toward the pier.
Ⅳ.1.We've got a problem with the car;it won't start!
2.He is always the first (student) to come to school. 3.Get up early tomorrow, or you'll not catch the early bus. 4.He picked up Chinese when he was living in Beijing. 5.How beautifully she sings! I have never heard a better voice.
