A
(2013·广东高考)Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.
However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that,_in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, time that most people won't put in.
This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.
When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.
Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

B.the meaning of success
C.the standards of success

40.What is the main theme of the passage?
A.Having a goal is vital to success.
B.Being good is different from being great.
C.One cannot succeed without time and practice.
D.Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.

Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉)can cut highway crashes.Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75% using a simple optical illusion.Bent stripes, called chevrons(人字形),painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are,and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C.is planning to repeat Japan's success.Starting next year, the Foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.
Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the Foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the Foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards(危险)are the greatest-curves,exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can at first cut the average speed of drivers in half.
However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bar.
Chevrons, scientists say,not only give drives the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

A.can keep drivers awake
B.can cut road accidents in half
C.will have a longer effect on drivers

Fourteen-year-old Richie Hawley had spent five years studying violin at the Community School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles when he took part in a violin contest.Ninety two young people were invited to the contest and Hawley came out first.
The contest could have been the perfect setup for fear, worrying about mistakes, and trying to impress the judges. But Hawley says he did pretty well in staying calm.“I couldn't be thinking about how many mistakes I'd make-it would distract(干扰)me from playing,”he says.“I didn't even remember trying to impress people while I played. It's almost as if they weren't there.I just wanted to make music.”
Hawley is a winner. But he didn't become a winner by concentrating on winning. He did it by concentrating on playing well.
A characteristic of high performers is their intense, pleasurable concentration on work, rather than on their competitors or future glory or money, says Dr.Charles Garfield, who has studied 1,500 achievers in business, science, sports, the arts, and professions.“They are interested in winning, but they're most interested in self-development,testing their limits.”
One of the most surprising things about top performers is how many losses they've had and how much they've learned from each.“Not one of the 1,500 I studied defined losing as failing,”Garfield says.“They kept calling their losses ‘setbacks’.”
A healthy attitude toward setbacks is essential to winning, experts agree.
“The worst thing you can do if you've had a setback is to let yourself get stuck in a prolonged depression. You should analyze carefully what went wrong, identify specific things you did right and give yourself credit for them.”Garfield believes that most people don't give themselves enough praise. He even suggests keeping a diary of all the positive things you've done on the way to a goal.
51.Hawley won the contest because ________.
A.he put all his mind to his performance
B.he cared much about the judges' feelings
C.he worried about making mistakes.
D.he paid close attention to the people around
52.According to the passage, successful people concentrate on ________.
A.defeating their opponents
B.learning from others
C.challenging their own limits
D.avoiding setbacks
53.High performers is that they tend to concentrate on ________.
A.glory B.wealth
C.pleasure D.work
54.The passage tells us that“praise”in times of trouble ________.
A.helps people deal with their disappointment
B.makes people forget their setbacks
C.makes people regret about their past
D.helps people realize their goals
55.It can be learned from the passage that top performers are not ________.
A.interested in winning
B.free of losses
C.accustomed to failures
D.concerned about setbacks

16.D 根据the better off your life will be可知这里是指你早点“开始”克服这些消极心理。
Overcoming negativity is something that can take a lifetime.

根据上句...to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical.
A项与本段首句不一致,并未提到成功的人喜欢展示自己的技巧;C项at the cost of life“付出生命的代价”是对they have put in a huge part of their life“付出他们生命中绝大部分的时间”的曲解;根据...thinking that way does you no good...
文章倒数第二段最后一句话“...within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bar.”
由第二段内容可知Hawley没有太过担心评委的感受,没有担心犯错,也没太在意打动观众,而是“...did it by concentrating on playing well”,即A项。
由第五段第一句话“A characteristic of high performers is their intense, pleasurable concentration on work”可知D项正确。

What does an artist want to do?Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand...he wants to teach, and he wants them to learn from him.
What visual (视觉)artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible,is exceptionally (特殊地)interesting for them and worth showing to us.Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors,or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist.
Most artists take shapes and colors from the world or nature and from human bodies in motion and repose (静态),their choices show that these fields of the world are worth looking at,that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary (当代的)artists might say that they only choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it.Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.
If one painter chooses to paint a gangrenous (生疮的)leg and a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something and emphasizing something, all of which means that he is trying to teach us.

A.nothing but meaningless patterns
B.uninteresting aspects of the world
C.subjects chosen partly for their meaning

Having crossed mountains and plains, rivers and lakes, some of France's greatest works of art are now on show at China National Museum of Fine Arts.Fifty-one impressionists' (印象派画家)paintings are forming part of an exhibition in Beijing to kick_off the Year of France.
The show is being held in the capital between October 10 to November 27,2012.Then it will move on to Shanghai and Hong Kong.
“It is such a good opportunity to see the masters' work up close,”said Feng Jiajia,a Senior 3 student from the High School Affiliated to the Academy of Art and Design (中央工艺美院附中).Although Feng is very busy with his studies at the moment he says he will definitely make time to see the exhibition.“I hope it will inspire me and help me with my own work,”he said.
Worth a total of US $ 600 million, the paintings are painted by French Impressionist masters, including Monet,Cezanne,Renior and Degas.
As an art style, impressionism was developed in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Their work was a fresh and original way of painting. They look like the artist painting a scene after just a quick look at it.
Often painting outside, rather than in a studio, the artists observed nature more directly and tried to catch individual moments in time, especially the changing light of the sun. They avoided black and earth colors and as a result their work is often very bright and can also look like it is shining.
When they first appeared, the artists were criticized for not finishing their paintings and for being lazy.Critics (批评家)said the Impressionists were satisfied with just a few inexact brushstrokes (笔画)instead of completing a real painting. It was an art critic who first used the term “Impressionist” in a review of Monet's work Impression,Sunrise (1873)to satirize (讽刺)his loose, inexact manner of painting.
“Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand,as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love,” said Monet.
Monet is the leading figure in the creation of Impressionism. He painted sunlit rivers and gardens with forceful brushstrokes and bright colors,in which objects lose their shape in the light. Monet's painting reached its height in later life with his paintings of Water Lilies (睡莲).
5.What does the phrase “kick off” mean in the first paragraph?
A.Start. B.Finish.
C.Go on. D.Congratulate.
6.Why do the students want to see the exhibition?
A.Because they are free during that time.
B.Because they think it can inspire them and help them with their own work.
C.Because they can buy some of the famous paintings.
D.Because the paintings are better than the paintings drawn by our own artists.
7.Which is NOT true about the impressionists?
A.They began to paint this kind of paintings about 100 years ago.
B.They often paint outside,not in a studio.
C.Their paintings are very bright and the paintings are shining.
D.Their paintings are not completed at all.
8.What is the critics' real meaning of using “impressionist” to Monet?
A.He is very satisfied with Monet's painting.

D.He can't understand the theme of Monet's painting.
