Candy Bruton, 56, a Delta Air Lines flight attendant flies about 90 hours over the course of 16 days a month.
But flying hours are only part of the time attendants spend on the job.Bruton explained that they also are required to put in “ground time”.They arrive about an hour before the flight takes off to make sure that the cabin is ready to go, the galley is fully stocked and all the required safety equipment is aboard and working. At the airport, Bruton and her fellow flight attendants are the first people on the plane and the last ones off.
For sports charters, attendants distribute welcoming snacks and drinks as the athletes, coaches and team officials board the plane, then provide nonstop service in the air. They hand-deliver everything — no carts in the aisles.Because the same attendants often are assigned to the same teams, they get to know what people want to eat and drink.“They don't have to ask,” Bruton said.
For a regularly scheduled flight, attendants help passengers put away their carry-on bags and get settled so the plane can depart on time.“In the air, they fill requests and continually check on the passengers,”Bruton said.
“I like to pick a couple of passengers and get to know them,” she said.“It's always the people. In the air, you're never alone.I've developed lifelong friendships with flight attendants and passengers.”
The job is not just about service.“A lot of what we do is safety-related,” Bruton said.In 36 years of flying, Bruton said she's seen only two emergencies, both of which were minor incidents that did not endanger anyone on the plane.

In the United States, elementary and middle schools are advised to give students two and a half hours of physical activity a week.Yet many schools across the country have reduced their physical education programs.Criticism of the cuts has led in some places to efforts to give students more time for exercise, not less.
The future health of Americans may depend on it.Just this week, a study reported that life expectancy has fallen or is no longer increasing in some parts of the United States. The situation is worst among poor people in the southern states, and especially women.Public health researchers say it is largely the result of increases in obesity, smoking and high blood pressure. They also blame differences in health services around the country.
In 2006, a study found that only 4% of elementary schools provided daily physical education all year for all grades. This was true of 8% of middle schools and 2% of high schools. The study also found that 22% of all schools did not require students to take any P.E.
The executive director of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education says one problem for P.E.teachers is that schools are under pressure to put more time into academic subjects.
Also, parents may agree that children need exercise in school.Yet many parents today still have bad memories of being chosen last for teams because teachers favored the good athletes in class. But experts say P.E.classes have changed. They say the goal has moved away from competition and toward personal performance, as a way to build a lifetime of activity. Some parents like the idea of avoiding competitive sports in P.E.class.Yet others surely dislike that idea.In the end, schools may find themselves in a no-win situation.

I found the imagination of becoming a grandmother somewhat discouraging.I was younger than I thought a grandmother should be when I got the news that I was going to become one myself.I admit,it was not a role that I was emotionally ready to accept.I had been a young mother, and had certainly hoped my daughter would not face that_same_challenge.I remarried when she was a teenager, and then had two more children. On getting the news that she was expecting,I remember thinking “What do I know about being a grandmother? —I haven't even finished raising my own kids yet!” I don't like to be unprepared,so I read a few books about grandparenting. That gave me a little help, but I was still uncertain.I thought about other grandmothers I knew, and got a few ideas I liked and a few more that I didn't.But I couldn't quite figure out what kind of grandmother I wanted to be.Then I thought about my own grandmother,Granny,as she's known by most people, and I knew I had the answer.
I didn't realize it until that moment, but my own grandmother was the example for the kind of grandmother I wanted to be.I am fortunate that I got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a little kid. Here's what I learned from my Granny.
Grandmothers always have a cookie jar.For my entire life,Granny always had a cookie jar full of cookies. When I was a little tiny girl, just at eye level with the counter,Granny would get the cookie jar down for me.When I was a little older I learned how to pull the chair over so I could reach. As I got taller,if I really stretched,I could reach the cookie jar with my finger tips and move it close enough to get it down off the counter to find out what kind of treat was inside.Always the first thing I did when I went to Granny's house was check the cookie jar,and there were always cookies in it.Many years later,I'll drive my own children to Granny's house and the first thing to do is get us all a cookie.
So grandmothers must have a cookie jar,and on my granddaugher's first Christmas,my daughter bought me my own cookie jar.She said when they came to see me,her daughter would find the treat the way she did and I did.

The world's first subway was built in London in 1863.At the time the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages—the taxis of those days to get around.
The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day .If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to get to and from work they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground—the first subway system was born. The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays but the first track was finally opened in January 1863.A steam train pulled the cars along the first underground track which was six kilometers 3.7 miles long.About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day.Riders were treated to comfortable seats, standing up while the train was moving was not allowed, and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars.
However the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot as well as chemical gases.Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe.Even with its problems riding the Underground did become popular. It carried nine million riders in its first year.Modern subways have come a long way since the early days of the London Underground.Today there are 94 large underground rapid transit systems around the world .The busiest of these subway systems is the Tokyo Metro which opened in 1927.This efficient subway has two billion riders per year and “porters” work on the platforms during busy traffic hours to help push riders onto trains. At times subway cars have been packed with up to 300 people.Shopping malls built in high traffic stations where riders move from one train to another have also helped the popularity of subways in Tokyo.Stations like the famous Ginza Sugo Eki Ginza Consolidated Station include underground department stores, supermarkets, restaurants and specialty shops.Shoppers never have to go above ground.

(2011·广东高考)A year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class.Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published.I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr.Davis.My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused.“Wait a minute.” someone might say, “are you talking about Mr.Davis the retired man, or Mr.Davis the respectable scholar?”
The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for briefcase (公文包) and standing before my full-length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class.I'm Mr.Davis.” Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice.Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came, my nerves kicked in and the true Mr.Davis was there.I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.
I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves.I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper.I saw nine students along a long table.I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.
“All right then,” I said.“OK, here we go.” Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment.I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day.I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forest of hands.Every student would yell.“Calm down, you'll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”
A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.
