If you've often been told that you need to build up your self-confidence, but didn't know exactly how, the following is a guide that will help you get there.
Understand your weak points.Everyone has weaknesses.Once you discover your weaknesses, work to overcome them. If, for example, you are a shy person, attend a social event and force yourself to speak to at least one or two people first. You'll discover that others appreciate your friendliness, and your nervousness will slowly disappear.
Spend time with positive people.People influence our lives.Spend time with successful, confident people at school and work. Please observe their behavior, their verbal and nonverbal language, and their ways of handling difficult situations.Remember, even these people have had to deal with a lack of confidence at one time or another.
Set personal goals for yourself. If you have a fear you need to overcome, challenge yourself to face that fear head on.Set goals for yourself. With each goal you meet, your self-confidence will increase. If you're afraid of trying new things because you might “fail,” give yourself a chance.
Greet each day with a sense of opportunity.Start your mornings by reading something inspirational. Think positively about yourself, and greet each day with enthusiasm and a renewed energy for living.
Don't fear refuse. All of us have experienced and will continue to experience refuse in our lives.Try not to take refuse personally.Sometimes constructive criticism can be perceived as a form of rejection to a personal suffering from low self-esteem.Remind yourself that you are an excellent person and that you are not afraid to take risks.

Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835.He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri on the Mississippi River. After his father died in 1847, young Samuel went to work as an assistant to a publisher.Ten years later, he became a pilot on a steamboat that sailed on the Mississippi. He heard the riverboat workers call out the words “mark twain!” That was a measure for the depth of water.
In 1861, the American Civil War put an end to steamboat traffic on the Mississippi. So Clemens traveled west and became a reporter for newspapers in Nevada and California.
Later, he wrote funny stories and called himself Mark Twain.Twain became famous for his story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865.
Twain also traveled a lot and began writing books about his travels. His stories about a trip to Europe and the Middle East were published in “The Innocents Abroad.” And his stories about life in the western United States became the book called “Roughing It.”
In 1870, he married Olivia Langdon and moved to Hartford, Connecticut.During the 1880s, he wrote books for children, such as “The Prince and the Pauper.” Twain also wrote “Life on the Mississippi.”
Mark Twain was already a successful writer before he became famous as a public speaker.Over the years, he had invested a lot of money in unsuccessful businesses. In 1893, he found himself deeply in debt.So to earn money, he traveled around the world giving humorous talks. His speeches made people laugh and remember events they had experienced.

Some people who like to eat very hot chili peppers say that they can help you breathe better if you have a cold.Others believe that chilies give you added energy.People have been growing chilies for centuries, and there are many kinds.
Want to fire up your meals with homegrown chilies? They need a warm climate. If you plant the seeds outside when the weather is cool, place the seeds under a glass. That will add warmth from the sun and protect them from wind. You can also start the seeds in your home or a greenhouse.
If you plant inside, fill a 7.5 centimeter pot with soil. The pot should have holes in the bottom so water can run out.Tap the sides of the pot to settle the soil.
Drop several seeds over the surface of the pot and cover with a thin layer of vermiculite(蛭石), a substance that can hold air, water and nutrients. Then cover the top of the pot with a see-through plastic bag.Place the pot in a warm area.
When the chilies start growing, take off the bag. When the plants have reached about two centimeters high, place each one carefully in its own seven and one-half centimeter pot.
When the roots show through the holes in the bottom of the pot, transplant each seedling into a twelve centimeter pot. When the plants are twenty centimeters high, tie the plants to a stick placed in the pot to support them.
When the chili peppers are thirty centimeters high, pinch the tops off with your fingers. That should make new branches grow. When the first flowers show, give the plants some potash fertilizer. When the weather is warm, put them into five-liter pots and place them outside.Make sure they get a good amount of light and water.

Ⅳ.阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the learned in the early days of the history, while during the fifteenth century the term “reading” undoubtedly meant reading aloud.Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading become popular.
One should be careful, however, of supposing that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud is distraction to others.Examination_of_reasons_connected_with_the_historical_development_of_silent_reading_shows_that_it_became_the_usual_mode_of_reading_for_most_adult_reading_tasks_mainly_because_the_tasks_themselves_changed_in_character.
The last century saw a gradual increase in literacy (读写能力) and thus in the number of readers. As readers increased, the number of listeners dropped, and thus there was some reduction in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the popularity of reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, trains and offices, where reading aloud would disturb other readers in a way.
Towards the end of the century there was still heated argument over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully, and over whether the reading of material such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening.Indeed this argument remains with us still in education. However, whatever its advantages, the old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and magazines for a specialized readership________.
The social, cultural, and technological developments in the century had greatly changed what the term “reading” referred to.

Ⅳ.阅读理解
Maurice Sendak's children's book, Where the Wild Things Are, published in 1963, has become very successful throughout the years and was made into a movie earlier this year.
The book's main character is a boy named Max who gets into trouble with his mother and is sent to bed without any supper. Before long, Max's room magically becomes a forest, and he sails away to a land where monsters live.Max isn't scared, though, and becomes king of the wild things, but after a while, he begins feeling homesick.Max sails back home and his supper is still hot when he arrives in his bedroom.
Many teachers and professors like this story and use it to help children develop creativity and imagination.Melina Davis, an education professor, said she likes how the book contains a couple of pages that have only pictures on them.“This allows children to shape the story themselves,” she said.
The book contains a few of larger words that some parents worry may confuse children, but experts say those words help improve children's reading skills and challenge them.
Davis said the book is well written which helps kids get involved in the story.“The book talks about what all children go through, like ‘I was naughty but my mommy still loves me’,”Davis said.
The book also encourages children to face their fears.“I think it's really good to show that Max is friends with the monsters,” Davis said, “Kids can find out monsters aren't always the thing under the bed that's going to scare them.I think this is good because it shows that the children can go to scary places but still have a positive experience.”
Since the book has been successful throughout the years, a movie was recently made and many people are excited to see it.Davis said she thinks the movie will be wonderful but it might be a little scary for younger children.“You don't want bad dreams over a book that's extremely wonderful,” Davis said.

Jamie Oliver has been invited by Gordon Brown to prepare a banquet at No.10 for President Barack Obama and other leaders of the G20, offering a cut-price menu to reflect times when trade and industry are far from prosperous and the rate of employment is decreasing.
Downing Street sources say Oliver, the well-known chef, will cook using “honest high-street products” and avoid expensive or “fancy” ingredients(材料).
The prime minister is trying to avoid a repeat of the embarrassment last year when he sat down to an 18-course banquet at a Japanese summit to discuss world food shortages.
Obama, President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and other leaders will be served by apprentices(学徒)from the Fifteen London,a restaurant Oliver founded to help train young people in poverty in order to make a living by mastering a skill.
Brown wants the dinner to reflect the emphasis of the London summit, which he hopes will lead to an agreement to lift the world out of recession.“To be invited to cook for such an important group of people, who are trying to solve some of the world's major problems, is really a privilege,” said Oliver.
“I'm hoping the menu I'm working on will show British food and produce is some of the best in the world, but also show we have pioneered a high-quality apprentice scheme at Fifteen London that is giving young people a skill to be proud of.”
The chef has not yet finalized the menu, but is expected to draw inspiration from his latest book, Jamie's Ministry of Food, which has budget recipes for beef and ale stew(啤酒炖菜)and “impressive” chocolate fudge cake.
