“Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said, too loud. She does that when she’s excited, because she can’t hear herself. Some kids turned to stare at us and I wanted to hide.
I led my family into my classroom and looked around. Other kids and parents were there, but I didn’t see Evelyn.
Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced her to my family and explained that my parents are deaf.
“Oh,” she said. “Well, how do you say ‘Welcome!’ in sign language ”
“Like this.” I swept my open right hand in toward my body, palm (掌心) up.
She repeated the movement.
“Thank you,” Mom said, smiling. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Ms. Jennings looked surprised. “You speak very well,” she said.
In sign language, I repeated what Ms. Jennings had said in case my parents hadn’t read her lips (嘴唇).
Mom nodded. “I lost my hearing as a child, after I’d learned to talk. Amy’s father was born deaf. He can talk, too, but he’s shy about his voice.”
Dad smiled in agreement.
Some of my classmates were watching us and whispering. Then I noticed Evelyn and her mom standing by the door.
“I sit over there,” I told my family and quickly walked toward my desk.
“Hi, Amy,” Evelyn said suddenly.
I turned around. “Hi.”
“I didn’t know your parents are deaf,” she said.
“Yeah.” I couldn’t think of anything else to say.
“And you can talk to them with your hands That’s so cool.”
“You think so ” I asked. I exhaled with relief.
Evelyn nodded. “It’s like a secret code. Would you teach me some words sometime ”
I smiled. “Of course.”
“One of my dad’s neighbours uses sign,” she said. “Maybe I can surprise her with a greeting next time I visit my dad.”
“Your dad doesn’t live with you ” I said.
She shook her head. “My parents are separated.”
“Oh, I...” I’d been so worried about my family that I hadn’t thought about Evelyn’s family. “Hey, if you come over tomorrow, we can practice some sign language then.”
1 got my parents’ attention. “Mom, Dad,” I said, signing, “I’d like you to meet my friend Evelyn and her mom.”

A 22-year-old British student has invented a mobile fridge that could save millions of lives across the world.
Will Broadway’s “Isobar” has been designed to keep vaccines(疫苗) at the ideal temperature while they are being sent in developing countries. And Will doesn’t plan to make money from his creation. His purpose is to get vaccines to people who need them, which is why he won’t be trying to get a patent(专利). Will’s Isobar has won him the James Dyson Award that challenges young people to “design something that solves a problem”.
Present methods of transporting vaccines can lead to the vaccines freezing(冻住) before reaching their places in developing countries, but the Isobar keeps a temperature of 2 to 8 degrees for 30 days.
Will’s invention is expected to save the lives of 1.5 million people across the world, a number he says is “amazing”. Having now finished college education, he is making an effort to take the Isobar into production. “I would be hands-on, all the way through it, knowing that it works,” he says. “It’s amazing to just give it a go, even in my back yard, and see the potential(潜能) of the technology.”
The product has been designed to transport vaccines, but already Will sees the possibility for other medical uses in the developing world and beyond. “Blood donations, organ transplants(器官移植) — if they get trapped in traffic, you still use cold-bags that really aren’t good enough for a long time,” he says.
There is also a possible, non-medical use for the Isobar. “It would be a great thing to take on a five-day trip where you have no power,” he says. But he insists vaccine transportation is the primary function(功能) of his invention.
1. What’s the advantage of the Isobar for sending vaccines in developing countries
A. It can save more energy. B. It can send more vaccines at a time.
C. It can keep vaccines in an ideal condition. D. It can transport vaccines at a faster speed.
2. The James Dyson Award is presented to _________.
A. old scientists who have developed modern technology
B. young men who have solved problems with their designs
C. doctors who have saved people’s lives in developing countries
D. college students who have got patents for their creative inventions
3. What is the passage mainly about
A. The production of a new fridge and its future. B. The invention of a new fridge and its inventor.
C. The transportation of vaccines and its problem. D. The introduction of an award and its new winner.

As we are writing this book, we are in Venice, Italy, speaking at a meeting on cultural differences.
If we had never travelled to Italy, we would have been shocked by what we’d experienced. All cultures walk on the same side of the pavement as they drive on the road. This means if you’re British, Australian, South African or a New Zealander, you drive and walk to the left. What you’d find is that Italians sometimes bump into you as you walk on the pavement because, as they come near and you move to your left, they move to their right.
You’d also be shocked when you go to shake hands to say goodbye to an Italian but, instead, you get a kiss on both cheeks. “As I was leaving, the Italian man kissed me on both cheeks. I was tying my shoelaces(鞋带) at the time!” Woody Allen wrote in her article.
As you talk with local Italians, they seem to stand in your space, holding your arms, talking over the top of you, shouting in fact, and sounding angry about everything. But these things are a normal part of everyday friendly Italian communication. Not all things in all cultures mean the same things.
When they talk, Italians use their entire arms and body, while English people and Germans stand at attention. Italians keep their hands held high as a way to mean that they want to go on talking. Arm touching during an Italian conversation doesn’t show love or affection, but is nothing more than a way of stopping the listener from raising his hands and taking the turn to talk. To interrupt an Italian you must catch his hands in mid air and hold them down.
34.Which of the following is true
A.Italians drive and walk to the right.
B.Italians drive on the same side as the British.
C.Italians like to bump into others when they walk.
D.Italians do not walk on the same side as they drive.
35.What does an Italian do to say goodbye
A.To shake hands. B.To tie the shoelaces. C.To stand at attention. D.To kiss on both cheeks.
36.If you want to stop an Italian from talking, you’ll have to ________.
A.move your entire body B.hold down his hands
C.look at the floor D.raise his hands
37.The passage mainly wants to tell the readers that ________.
A.all cultures drive and walk on the same side B.if you walk in Italy, don’t bump into others
C.things do not mean the same in all cultures D.if you travel to Italy, you will be shocked
34.A 35.D 36.B 37.C
34.推理判断题。根据“What you’d find is that Italians sometimes bump into you as you walk on the pavement because, as they come near and you move to your left, they move to their right.”可知,你会发现,当你走在人行道上时,意大利人有时会撞到你,因为当他们走近时,你向左转,他们向右转,由此可推测意大利人是向右行驶和行走的。故选A。
35.细节理解题。根据“You’d also be shocked when you go to shake hands to say goodbye to an Italian but, instead, you get a kiss on both cheeks.”可知,告别时,意大利人会吻你的双颊。故选D。
36.细节理解题。根据“To interrupt an Italian you must catch his hands in mid air and hold them down.”可知,如果你想打断意大利人讲话,你必须抓住他的手,把他们的手放下去。故选B。
37.主旨大意题。根据“Italy speaking at a meeting on cultural differences.”,“If we had never travelled to Italy, we would have been shocked by what we’d experienced.”,“Not all things in all cultures mean the same things.”可知,文章主要讲述了意大利的文化差异,可知作者想告诉读者在所有的文化中,事物的含义并不相同。故选C。
