Najib is an Afghan who grew up in Iran. He led a tough life. When he found his children would be in the same situation, his family initially returned to Afghanistan. But with the country filled with conflicts, they decided to leave for Indonesia.
“When we first came here, we were in a bad situation. Its language, culture and even weather were different. We had moved away from friends and family,” says Najib. “I was in a tough position but I acted strong because there were no other choices."
Refugees(难民)cannot work in Indonesia and there are limited choices for refugee children to attend local schools. Determined to avoid such a fate, a group of refugees in Puncak took action and scraped together(东拼西凑)their resources to set up a school-the Refugee Learning Center(RLC).
“Our only goal and task is to provide basic education and prepare the refugee children for their future,” says Abdullah Sarwari. “We’re also trying to provide a normal life as much as possible for them.”
The RLC has also started offering Bahasa Indonesia classes to the refugee community. “Between the refugee and the local community, I feel like there's a language barrier which stops the refugee from having an honest and open interaction with Indonesians,” says Abdullah.
“If you try your best, to learn the language of a particular place or country, it really helps make things easier,” says Najib. He is among those who signed up for classes, although he admits progress has been slow. But life has improved in some ways for him and his family.

When you were at school, were you ever told to stop daydreaming and concentrate It was easy for your mind to wander if you weren't in what you were learning or if you had better things to think about. Staying focused can still be a challenge in adult life, but understanding how to do it, and knowing what is distracting you, can help.
Scientists have looked at what makes us delay and found a number of ways to help us stay in the zone. One of the most obvious things is eliminating noise. Research by Science Focus magazine found silence is best for concentration, or a gentle background hum and coffee shop noise is great! It also found turning off notifications on your phone or switching it off altogether, removes a major distraction and helps us focus on the task at hand.
Another possible cure for a short attention span is brain training. Psychologists and neuroscientists are increasingly interested in our ability to settle down and have looked at what we can change inside our head to make us concentrate. An article for BBC Future by Caroline Williams says that “Attention Researcher Nilli Lavie of University College London has found that making a task more visually demanding takes up more processing power and leaves the brain nothing left to process distractions.” So, keeping your mind busy might be the answer.
There are more practical tips to keeping your mind focused. These include making a list or timetable of the tasks you have to do, finding a workspace where you’re not tempted to do other things, or chewing some gum! It’s possible the movement in your mouth occupies parts of the brain that might otherwise get distracted.
But according to Science Focus magazine distraction isn’t all bad. “If we were always so focused that we never got distracted, we’d miss potential changes, such as threats, in our environment. Distraction is vital for survival.”
28.Which of the following is similar to the underlined phrase in paragraph 2
A. Concerned. B. Absorbed. C. Calm D. Enthusiastic.
29.Why does the author suggest keeping our mind busy
A. To introduce a mental recovery. B. To explain a cultural phenomenon.
C. To train our brain to concentrate. D. To recommend an intelligent train
30.What is Science Focus magazine's attitude to distraction
A. All-sided. B. Doubtful. C. Contradictory. D. Puzzling.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. How to stay focused B. The harm of distraction
C. The Benefits of keeping focused D. The research about distraction

The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school.
“I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed.
“It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.”
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.
32. What is the purpose of the project
A. To promote the elderly people’s wellbeing.
B. To provide part-time jobs for the aged.
C. To raise money for medical research.
D. To ensure harmony in care homes.
33. How has the project affected Ruth Xavier
A. She has learned new life skills.
B. She has gained a sense of achievement.
C. She has recovered her memory.

The Art of Recycling
Recycling is not new. Many civilizations have reused objects. However, recycling is more important today because there is more pollution and fewer natural resources. 36 Others use these recycled materials to make art!
37 Artists use old tires, pieces of metal, cloth, etc. These materials might come from yard sales or swap meets(旧物交换会). In addition, businesses might give used materials to artists.
38 For example, artists in New York City made a sculpture that looked like a giant white cloud. The sculpture, called “Head in the Clouds”, was more than 40 feet long and 15 feet high! People walked into the cloud sculpture and danced to live music. 39 That's the number of water bottles that are thrown into the trash every hour in New York City! The artists wanted to show how many water bottles ended up in the garbage.
Many art projects are shown at outdoor art and music festivals. Many cities even have festivals specifically for recycled art.
Museums also exhibit recycled art. A museum in Texas allowed visitors to add to the art or display. The project was called the 'Recycle Reef(珊瑚礁).’The background looked like an ocean reef, and people added to the 'reef’ with the recycled materials provided. 40
Have you made something using paper towel tubes or water bottles If so, you've made recycled art.
A. Not all recycled art is big, though.
B. Almost anything can be recycled into art.
C. Recycled art often says something about our world.
D. They even recycled the exhibit after the show ended.
E. Some people might recycle cans and bottles at home.
F. Others bring home plastic and cardboard that can be recycled.
G. The artists used over 53,000 recycled water bottles to make the cloud.
