The past continuous tense
过去进行时
Lead in
过去进行时表示过去某一时刻正在发生的动作,
常与at that time / moment, then, at 9:00 p.m., yesterday等时间状语连用。
2. 过去进行时表示过去某一段时间内持续的动作,常与those days, the
whole morning, from 7:00 to 9:00 yesterday evening 等时间状语连用。
3. 过去进行时表示在过去某一个动作发生时,另一个动作正在发生。

when 后面的动词 一般采用短暂性动词的一般时态;当两个一长一短的动作在过去某时间同时发生时,用过去进行时表示较长的动作。
while 后面的动词一般采用延续性的进行时态,如果主要动作都是延续性的或同时发生,那么主从句都可用过去进行时。

一般过去时
它是对过去事实的客观描述,语气比较客观、肯定;

我父亲总是很晚才回来。
过去进行时有时也可表示带有描绘性和感彩。特别是带有always, forever这类状语时。
