I'm very glad to receive your letter. From your letter, I know you have shown 28 great interest in inventing new things. That's great. As for how to be an inventor, there is no quick answer to 29 .
Coming from different cultures and having different backgrounds, inventors do not seem to have much 30 common. But creative thinking, 31 is greatly valued, is perhaps the basic skill an inventor should have. In order to explore new possibilities, you will have to learn to break 32 from old thought patterns. When you get stuck, try to look at the problem in 33 many ways as possible. Each new way may improve your understanding.
More importantly, always keep it in your mind 34 success is no accident. It is the result of a long process(过程)of trial and error. Above 35 , the main task for you is to study hard and try to learn more knowledge. This, of course, will lay a solid foundation.
Hope your future invention will make a difference.

Charlie Chaplin was one of the greatest and widely loved silent movie stars. From Easy Street(1917)to Modern Times(1936),he made many of the funniest and most popular films of his time.He was best known for his character, the inexperienced and lovable little Tramp(流浪者).The little Tramp,a well-meaning man in an old suit with a walking stick, always found himself in embarrassing situations.More than any other figure,it is this kind-hearted character that we connect with the time before the films with dialogue.
Born in London in 1889,Chaplin first visited America with a theater company in 1907.Appearing as Billy in the play Sherlock Holmes, the young Chaplin traveled around the country twice. On his second trip,he met Mack Sennett and was signed to Keystone Studios to act in films. In 1914 Chaplin made his first film,Making a Living. That same year he made thirty-four more short films, including Caught in a Cabaret,Caught in the Rain,The Face on the Bar-Room Floor, and His Trysting Place. These early silent shorts allowed very little time for anything but physical comedy, and Chaplin was a master at it.
Chaplin's humorous tricks made him famous, but a new style of his acting made him great. For Chaplin, the best way to express the humour or sadness of a situation was through natural acting. The concern of early theater and film was to simply keep the audience's attention through overacting to communicate feelings, but Chaplin saw in film an opportunity to control the environment enough to allow feelings to come through by natural acting.
Chaplin knew that a successful scene was not simply about the star, but about everyone on the screen. He demanded that all the actors work together in every performance.Without this teamwork he could not express the feelings of the character that were so important to him.The only way to achieve that teamwork was to keep complete control over every scene.

George Gershwin, born in 1898,was one of America's greatest composers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old.During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.
Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s.Many of his songs have remained popular as ever.Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music.Could jazz, some people asked,be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music.Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it.And in that short time,he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue.Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.
In 1928,Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition(作曲) with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him.She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there,Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家) were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life,to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.
George Gershwin died in 1937,just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old.Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages.People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.

In the 19th century people from all over the country came here to find gold. Many people become very rich now. They bought all the ground near the bank of the river. They dug big holes in it, trying to find more gold.
Mike Judeson was one of those who came to find gold. He bought nearly the last piece of the ground. It was a long way from the river, so no one else wanted to buy it. But Mike paid all his money for it. He worked hard month after month, but didn't find any gold.
Then one night, just before he was going to give it up, it began to rain. It rained for several days and nights. When the rain stopped at last, Mike came out of his small wooden house to see his piece of ground. It didn't look the same. The holes were not there any more, and a lot of small plants grew everywhere.
“Perhaps there is no gold here.” Mike said. “But this ground is rich. I can grow flowers and sell them for money. The women in this town are rich now. They have beautiful houses and they will put flowers in their houses. If I can grow good flowers here, I can make money, too.” So he did. And soon his piece of ground was covered with beautiful flowers. Later he was able to buy more fields until he owned all the ground near the river.

As of 2020,space tourism will become a reality. You can book flights with 330 other people who want to fly into space. At this time, the cost is $200,000 per flight, but it is expected that the cost will soon come down.It is estimated that by 2025 about 15,000 people will fly into space every year.
No doubt these advances will lead to new extreme sports for brave people to try.By 2025 a famous actress that wants to give her career a boost might try to ride a surfboard (冲浪板) in space, through the atmosphere, and then sail past a beach in California before landing on the nearby ocean, and then surf back to the beach. The surfboard will be extra large, and it can control weather.
At the start of the flight, she will have to wear a space outfit and be strapped onto the surfboard which will act as protection. But as it gets lower in height and it becomes warmer, she can start taking off her clothes. The world's media will watch and report on every move as she throws each piece away, and watch as the pieces quickly burn up.As she gets lower and glides the surfboard over to the beach near Los Angeles, she will get rid of the rest.So she will be wearing a bikini as she glides in and lands on the ocean and then goes on to surf into the beach.

(2012·衡阳市一中、八中高一下期中)Retirement is the time to enjoy your hobbies and interest actively. A hobby not only gives a certain direction to the life of a retired individual but also allows him to relax and experience joy.
Reading is one of the most common hobbies that retired people pursue. Not only does it transport you to a different world, but reading is also a form of relaxation. Reading broadens your scope of knowledge and also builds your vocabulary.
Bird watching is another interesting hobby loved by many retired people. There are many clubs that you can join through which you can enjoy learning about different kinds of birds. Many people watch birds and then write down their experience along with pictures of various birds.
Sky gazing or star gazing is a hobby that many senior citizens like to pursue. Before you pursue your hobby, it is wise to read some books about astronomy (天文学) and space. You can also surf the Internet and learn about the basics of astronomy. You can also visit a planetarium (天文馆) which is a great place to learn more about stars, and the solar system. Once you have a basic understanding of the sky, you can join sky/star gazing clubs or buy a telescope through which you can get the best view of the sky.
Reading and writing poems can also be a good hobby to choose. You can pursue your hobby by reading a few famous classic poems. Writing your thoughts down also helps you to write good poems. Studying poetry, understanding it and reading more and more poems is the way people can develop this hobby and gain more joy than getting your work published.
Age is never a limit to learning anything new. Develop a child-like curiosity and learn to develop your hobbies so that you can have fun.

How to wash clothes in a flash
Laundry is never an easy part of housework. But if piles of sweaty T-shirts and smelly socks drive you crazy, then two Chinese scientists might have the answer.
Long Mingce and Wu Deyong of Shanghai Jiao Tong University have invented a kind of cotton that cleans itself.“No need for soap or water,”the scientists say.All you have to do is put the clothes out in the sun.
According to the Guardian, this magical self-cleaning ability comes from a special chemical mixture. The material is covered with this mixture. It can break_down dirt and remove bad smells after only a few hours in the sun.
One of the chemicals is called titanium dioxide (二氧化钛).Scientists have known for some time that titanium dioxide can clean fabrics (织物).However,it only works under ultraviolet (紫外的) light and so is not yet widely used-ultraviolet light cannot be seen.
“We knew that self-cleaning cotton fabrics with titanium dioxide coating had already been developed, but they cannot work,or they work weakly, under sunlight,”Long said.“If we want to use the fabrics in daily life,we must develop cotton that cleans itself under daylight.”
The scientists worked hard for years to find a better chemical. Finally, they added silver iodide (碘化银) into the mixture. This made the chemical reactions in sunlight faster. The new mixture is also nearly seven times better than the former one with pure titanium dioxide at removing dirt and killing bacteria (细菌).
The experiment was only carried out on cotton clothing. However, according to Long, the technology can be“applied to all kinds of fabrics and their related products.”“It is also cheap and environmentally friendly,”he said.
The self-cleaning material is not yet ready for the market.Scientists still need to know whether it could harm people.Although titanium dioxide is used in some foods,it can cause health problems if it gets into the lungs.Scientists need to make sure it is safe before we can start to enjoy the benefits of this technology.
