My dad was in the hospital battling a serious disease when he was rushed to the operating room. After a hurried talk with Dad's doctors,Mother told my sister and me the worst.
Throughout my childhood,my father had survived many serious medical problems, including a heart attack and cancer. He'd seen the four walls of the hospital room more times than anyone should have to.“Lord,” I prayed,“please save him.We can't live without him.” Dad pulled through. As soon as he felt better,he told us something amazing about that day in the operating room.
“I was scared.I knew I was dying,”he said.“I moved my head to one side and watched the nurses preparing for the operation.Beyond them I saw a large window which was open.Out of it was a lighted cross. My eyes were fixed upon it.My fears died out.I had the strength to beat the disease and I believed my operation would be successful. The operation started, and then I didn't know anything.”
Dad recovered fully and several months later he went to call on a friend at the same hospital. There he looked around for the cross he'd seen.He couldn't find it.He ran into one of the nurses who had taken care of him.“Can I take a quick look at the operating room where I had my operation?” he asked. The room was free so she took him in.My father was very surprised. There were no windows in the room, and the four walls were solid through and through. Why did he see the cross? This is the story of my dog called Shandy. He was my favorite pet and he was very lively. His main passion in life was to be taken for a long walk, ending with a big run out in his favorite park.
I would try to take him on this walk every day, weather permitting. The park itself was about three miles away from our house. To reach the park we had to cross a number of busy roads, and he would never pull or misbehave. He knew where we were heading and seemingly did not want to risk being taken home before he reached his dream destination.
But because of my work I had to rent a flat near the coast in Devon. It was nearly a hundred miles away from my home. This obviously meant I was no longer in the position to take Shandy on his walk.I spoke to my parents, who comforted me that they would continue to take him on the walks.
Two weeks after I had left,I had a phone call from my mother. She was panicking(惊慌),saying that Shandy had managed to escape from the back garden and that she could not find him.She insisted that she had been looking for hours but that there had been no sign of him.I was quite worried and thought about where he might have gone,“Have you been taking him on his walks to the park every day?”I asked. She replied,“Most days.”I asked her to try at the park.“He would not be there;it's miles away,”she said.I again asked her to try there because running in the park was his habit.Luckily he was there quite happily sniffing(闻) around, unaware of the panic(恐慌) he had caused.

Everything we know about the world comes to us through our senses.Traditionally,we were thought to have just five of them-sight,hearing,touch,smell,and taste.
Although we pay little attention to them, each of these senses is precious and almost irreplaceable-as we discover,to our sorrow,if we lose one.People usually fear blindness above all other disabilities.Yet deafness can be an even more severe handicap, especially in early life, when children learn language. This is why Helen Keller's achievements were so extraordinary.
As a result of an illness at the age of 19 months, she lost both sight and hearing and sank into a totally dark, silent world. She was rescued from this terrible separation by her teacher,Anne Sullivan, who managed to explain,by tapping signs into the little girl's palm, that things have names, that letters make up words, and that these can be used to express wants or ideas.
Helen Keller later grew into a writer and a wellknown advocate for the handicapped. Her remarkable development owed a great deal to her determination, her teacher, and her family. But it also showed that when a sense(or two,in Helen Keller's case)is missing, another sense(in her case, touch) may be trained to make up for the loss,at least in part.
Our nervous system reacts only to a selected range of wavelengths, vibrations,or other properties. It is limited by our genes,as well as our previous experience and our present state of attention.
What draws our attention,in many cases,is change. Our senses are finely adjusted to change.Stationary or unchanging objects become part of the scenery and are mostly unseen.Usual sounds become background noise, mostly unheard. The feel of a sweater against our skin is soon unnoticed.
If something in the environment changes,we need to take notice because it might mean danger—or opportunity.Suppose an insect lands on your leg, instantly the touch receptors on the affected leg fire a message that travels up to your brain. There it crosses into the opposite hemisphere(the right hemisphere of the brain controls the left side of the body, and vice versa)to alert brain cells at a particular spot on a sensory map of the body.
48.The author refers to Helen Keller in order to ________.

life
D.suggest hearing is precious and irreplaceable

Joining in early morning exercises is a good health habit to develop, but it takes a lot of effort to begin with.Everyone loves to stay longer in bed in the morning and only a few would actually love to get up early even if its purpose is to add more years to your life by exercising.Fortunately, here are some tips that can help you to develop your morning exercise habit.
Firstly, get prepared for your morning exercise the night before. In other words, prepare your exercise outfit(服装) the night before your scheduled morning exercise. This will help you to change immediately as soon as you wake up.You also need to make sure that all the things you need for your activity are all ready. This will help you to go out as quickly as you can.
Secondly, you do not need to force yourself to wake up at once to perform the activity.Remember, you are on your way to developing a habit, and you should not do something that you are going to hate afterwards.Allow your body to adjust(适应) itself instead of jumping out of your bed and forcing your body to exercise when it still needs to rest a bit.Take time to gargle(漱口),wash your face, brush your teeth and enjoy a cup of coffee before actually moving.
Thirdly, try to change your exercise to keep the excitement.Making some changes to your exercise can help you to avoid feeling dull. For example,if you like to walk or jog,you can change your route(路线) to see some changes in scenery. But you should always head to places that offer fresh air and sights that can encourage thinking and imagination. You can also try swimming or cycling for a change.
Lastly, get enough sleep and rest.Waking up early is a challenge if your body is short of enough rest and sleep. It is hard to force yourself to rise and get up if it has not replenished(补充) the energy that it lost the day before.Exercise is a serious business because it has something to do with your health. When you develop your exercise habit, you should also give yourself enough rest to get the energy you need to keep it.
These are some of the ways to develop early morning exercise habit.Do it for health. It can be your way to live a healthy lifestyle.

1.B make the most of意为“充分利用”,为固定搭配,由此排除A、C两项。
It's likely to rain.it指天。
recognition“认可”;contribution“贡献”;devotion“奉献,专心”;attraction“吸引”。
come up with提出;make up for弥补;make use of利用。

9.D 第一空可用sitting和seated作宾补,her与sit是主谓关系,seat与her为动宾关系;第二空用fixed作宾补,fix与her attention为动宾关系。
out of one's reach 某人够不着;out of touch失去联系;out of sight看不见。

My Teacher Mrs.Amon
Of all my teachers,Mrs.Amon is the one who impresses me most.Though she is 44,she looks very young for her age.And she's one of the most popular teachers in our school.
Compared with other teachers,Mrs.Amon pays more attention to her way of teaching. She tries various ways to make her classes lively and interesting. In her opinion,we should not only know “what”,but also understand “why”.So,instead of giving us answers immediately, she encourages us to think by ourselves whenever she puts forward questions. With her help,we've learned how to analyze and settle problems. What a wonderful world of “why” she leads us to!
She is such a learned person that we all admire her very much.

One evening I was parked in front of the mall wiping spots of mud off my car.I had just come from the company and was waiting for my wife. She was buying presents for her mother.Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a beggar. From his looks,he had no car,no home,no clean clothes and no money.
There are times when you feel generous, but there are times that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one of the times that“you don't want to be bothered and hope he doesn't ask me for money,” I thought. But he didn't.
After a few minutes he spoke.“That's a very nice car,”he said.He dressed poorly, but had an air of dignity (尊严) around him.I said “Thanks” and continued cleaning my car.
He watched quietly as I worked. The expected plea (请求) for money never came.As the silence between us widened, something inside said,“Ask him if he needs any help.” I was sure that he would say yes,but I held true to the inner voice.
“Do you need any help?” I asked.I expected nothing but a dirty hand.He spoke three words that shocked me and I shall never forget.“Don't we all?” he said.
I needed help.Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed help. Those three words still ring true.No matter how much you have, you need help.No matter how little you have, you can give help.
Maybe he was an angel, dressed like a beggar.Maybe the man was just a homeless beggar, but his words were reasonable.

I saw a lady with a guide dog pass my window. Before she had managed to disappear from view she stopped. After a minute or so I watched as she signalled her dog to walk forward, the dog however remained sitting and refused to move. This continued for another minute or so until I was so puzzled by it that I went out to see what was happening.Sure enough the woman was still standing and trying in vain to get the dog to move forward.
I approached and asked what the problem was.She explained that a car a few yards ahead had its tyres on the kerb(路沿)and its motor running. In a situation like this the dog is trained not to proceed but will wait for the car to either move on or have its engine turned off.As I looked at the car I was able to tell the blind lady that in fact there was no one in it.The driver had left the engine running and popped into a shop for something.I waited another 2 or 3 minutes until the driver returned and hopped into the car totally oblivious to the inconvenience he had caused.
I pointed out what had happened to the driver who seemed a little embarrassed and shot off in the car.Only a week or so later I saw the same thing.Only this time I had the answer.Once again the same blind lady and her dog were on one side of the path. The dog sat on the pavement and the lady signalling it to move forward. This time a van was parked at the side of the dirt track, the driver reading a newspaper with his engine running to keep warm.I was able to explain to the van driver what was happening and he immediately switched the engine off and the dog got up and crossed the dirt track.

Sydney-A shark savaged a schoolboy's leg while he was surfing with his father at a beach in Sydney on February 23.It was the third shark attack along the coast of Australia's largest city in a month.
The 15-year-old boy and his father were in the water off Avalon,on Sydney's northern beaches, around dawn when he was attacked. The city's beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the summer months.
“The father heard a scream and turned to see his son thrashing (激烈扭动) about in the water,”police said.“Fortunately, the shark swam away and the boy was helped to the shore by his father.”
Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller said,“It got him around the top of his left leg and the father came and dragged him out of water.”He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to the shore.“There was a lot of pain,as you could imagine.”The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment for leg injuries.
Police said the bites “cut through to the bone”,but the boy did not appear to have sustained any fractures(骨折).He was in a stable condition now.
Several beaches were closed after the attack.Water police and lifeguards were searching for the shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too early to say what type of shark attacked the boy.“I don't even know if he saw it.”Miller said.
Many shark species live in the waters off Sydney's beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively rare. However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the city's world-famous Bondi beach.
Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks.Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to the shore as they chase fish. Many shark species, including the Great White—the man-eaters made famous in Steven Spielberg's Jaws—are protected in Australian waters.
1.The report mainly tells us ________.
A.shark attacks on humans are on the rise

Anger is a natural reaction which comes out when we feel that we have not been given a fair treatment. The positive side of this negative emotion is that it has helped us to evolve as humans and cope in a better manner with our surroundings. However,it tends to become a problem when we fail to control it.Many a time it happens that your anger has hurt others or has spoiled one of your relationships for which you regret later. It has some bad effects on the health, too.
We should control anger so that it does not cause harm to us or to those around us whom we love. One of the best ways to control anger is to get help from others. If you feel that you are unable to manage your anger,it can make you more upset. So tell someone who is close to you,a friend or a family member, about your problem. When you discuss a matter with others, there is a better chance of finding a solution to your problem.Besides, there are no better stress relievers than humour. When you feel that it is because of stress that your anger is becoming unmanageable, you can use humour. It can help you look at difficult things in a lighter way and you will feel better about the things around you.
Anger tends to make us have a lot of negative thoughts. Therefore,we have to change the negative thoughts into positive ones. For this you have to first refuse all the negative thoughts that are in your mind one by one. This can be done with a lot of practice.Once you are successful in that, you have to maintain your focus only on the positive things of life.
Meditation (冥想) is an excellent anger management technique. In addition, what we do is disconnect ourselves from the outer world and focus all our attention into the inner world. This helps us develop a sense of controlling our thoughts that tend to cause anger.

Kids may need to apologize if they do something wrong-like telling a lie or breaking a rule on purpose. When they do something their parents tell them not to do,or they don't do something they are supposed to do,they apologize, too.
Grown-ups can apologize, too—to other grown-ups or even to kids. After all, even grown-ups make mistakes sometimes.By apologizing when they're wrong,grown-ups can set a good example and show kids how to do the right thing and apologize when they need to.
Saying “I'm sorry” when you need to is the right thing to do.It does a lot of good. But by itself,it might not be enough to make everything all better again.Sometimes along with an apology,a person needs to fix the mistake or promise to do better.Sometimes doing a nice thing for the person after you apologize helps show that you really are sorry and want to be friendly again.
Sometimes a heartfelt (由衷的)“I'm sorry” fixes everything right away.Other times,it might take a while for someone to feel friendly after you apologize. You might need to give the other person some time.Even after you say you're sorry, you might still feel bad about what you said or did-but you can feel good about apologizing and about making up your mind to do better.
When someone apologizes to you,you might not feel like being friendly again right away.Once in a while,if a person doesn't change, you might not want to be friends anymore. You might feel glad that the other person apologized and admitted being wrong. But if someone keeps behaving in mean ways or does something that keeps hurting, you might not feel the same way anymore.Someone apologizes to you;it doesn't mean you have to be friendly again. That part is up to you.

Ⅰ.1.puzzled 2.recognized 3.volunteers 4.ignored 5.reduced 6.sniffed 7.analyse
8.sweat 9.firmly 10.approach
5.D 由本题题干中的“When I was young”可知后面的句子应用一般过去时。
该句包含一个由whether引导的主语从句“whether the newly formed committee's policy can be put into practice”,该主语从句不缺成分,所以排除B和C;由语境中的remains to be seen可知,“是否实施新政策”还有待观察,所以此处要用whether。
have total belief that...
13.B 句意:你为什么不让他注意到你病得无法继续工作这一事实呢?it在此作形式宾语,真正的宾语是后置的从句that you're too ill to work on。
