It's pretty much common knowledge that Easter is a Christian celebration of Christ's rising.Where did the colored eggs, cute little bunnies, baby chicks, leg of lamb dinners, and lilies come from? They are all symbols of rebirth and the lamb was a traditional religious sacrifice(祭品).
Easter falls in the spring, the yearly time of rebirth, when the earth makes good itself after a long, cold winter. The word Easter comes to us from the Norsemen's Eostur, Eastar,Ostara, and Ostar, and the goddess Eostre, all of which involve the season of the growing sun and new birth. The Easter Bunny arose originally as a symbol of fertility (多产), due to the rapid reproduction habits of the hare and rabbit.
The ancient Egyptians, Persians, Phoenicians, and Hindus all believed the world began with a large egg,and thus the egg as a symbol of new life has been a long time.
The details may be different, but most cultures around the world use the egg as a symbol of new life and rebirth.A system of signs in the household accounts of Edward I of England showed an expense of eighteen pence for 450 eggs to be gold-leafed and colored for Easter gifts. The first book to mention Easter eggs by name was written five hundred years ago.Yet,a North African tribe that had become Christian much earlier in time had a custom of coloring eggs at Easter.Long hard winters often meant little food, and a fresh egg for Easter was quite a prize.Later,Christians give up eating meat during the Lenten season before Easter.Easter was the first chance to enjoy eggs and meat after the_long_abstinence.
Some European children go from house to house begging for Easter eggs, much like Halloween trick-or-treaters.Called pace-egging, it comes from the old word for Easter, Pasch. Many old cultures also considered the egg to be great healing powers. It is interesting to note that eggs play almost no part in the Easter celebrations of Mexico, South America, and Native American Indian cultures.Egg-rolling contests are a symbolic practice of the rolling away of the stone from Christ's tomb. The decoration of small leaf-barren branches as Easter egg trees has become a popular custom in the United States since the 1990s.

For decades, the number of farmers has been decreasing, and farming has often been seen as a backbreaking (辛苦的)job. But the recent research showed a 4 % increase in the number of farms, the first increase since 1920, and some college graduates are joining in the return to the land.
Jordan Schmidt, a manager at Hearty Roots Community Farm, studied environmental science at Wesleyan.Ms.Schmidt did not have so much as a garden growing up, but in college, she worked at a student-run farm and fell in love with agriculture(农业).So she gave up her scientific research and moved onto a farm in Pennsylvania after graduating. This is her third season at Hearty Roots Community Farm.
“Most people who work for me are here for one season and then move onto other farms, so that's actually the biggest challenge,” said Ben Shute, who owns Hearty Roots Community Farm with his wife, Lindsey.“Every year we are busy training new people. But it is worth having such people.A lot of young people want to farm for themselves, so they are motivated(有积极性的)to learn quickly.”
On the East End of Long Island, Sean Frazier and other four people who are recent college graduates in their mid-20s, work on Quail Hillfarm in Amagansett and have become close friends.Asked if he felt he was missing out on (失去……机会) the city lifestyle, Mr.Frazier replied, “I much more feel the opposite. It would just really bother me to feel like I was inside all day and I was just missing out on everything that happened.”

The city of Pompeii was once part of the largest and most powerful empire the world had ever seen.Behind this city was Vesuvius, a mountain that had been formed by an old volcano. It sometimes trembled as underground gases caused earth tremors(地震)which shook buildings. The people were sometimes alarmed, but never thought there was any real danger in being close to the volcano.
Then one day in the year 79, many dogs and farm animals began to act strangely.More tremors began.Unusual rumbling noises came from higher up the mountain until there was a loud explosion. The top of the volcano blew off-showering the city with smoke, hot stones and ashes.A tongue of fire appeared out of the crater(火山口) which had now formed at the peak(顶峰).
The hot air and debris (碎片) continued to rain down.At first the people locked their doors and windows, hoping that this would only last a short while. They went into cellars (地下室)and underground passages to avoid the poisonous gases that filtered through cracks and openings. But, soon they were choking to death as they gasped for fresh air. Some tried to escape by running away, but the streets became blocked with loaded carts that had overturned, and piles of dead and dying people.
In a short while all the houses were totally covered by the debris which piled up over the rooftops. The city lay buried. The volcano subsided and the people gradually forgot about the city and those who lay buried under the ashes.Over the years, winds carried soil over the top and gradually trees and grass grew over where all the streets and buildings lay meters below. The people farmed the land around Vesuvius, which remained dormant(休眠)for hundreds of years.
It was not until around 1860 that archaeologists, interested in finding the remains of the buried city Pompeii, started digging. It has taken many years for most of the city to be uncovered.Today you can walk along the paved(铺设好的) streets and see the marks made by wheels of chariots and carts. You can enter many of the houses and shops which are well preserved. There is a museum in which all kinds of possessions are housed. They include tools, cooking utensils (器具), furniture and clothing.

When people talk about a “slow boat to China”, they usually mean that something is taking a very long time. The term is often used in reference to movements of people or goods, as in “my package is taking so long to arrive;it must be on a slow boat to China”.This idiom is most commonly used in American English.
The origins of the term appear to lie in the game of poker, The player who lost at a slow and steady pace was often referred to as a “slow boat to China”.Therefore the patient player achieved his winnings slowly and steadily. In a way the loser's plight (困境) was beneficial for the winning poker player.
In 1948, Frank Loesser used the idiom in a slightly different way in his song “On a Slow Boat to China”.He used it in a romantic sense, referring to the idea of being so in love with someone that you would want to take the person on a slow boat to China to spend as much time with him or her as possible. Both of these meanings referred to the fact that shipping something to China took a long time, and it would have taken even longer to cross the Pacific on a slow boat.
People continue to use this term to refer to long trips, or to suggest that they have a great deal of time to do something. For example, one might say,“We can sit and talk as long as you like, because we might as well be on a slow boat to China.” As a matter of fact, the term isn't used as much in the romantic sense anymore, because the famous song has fallen out of favor.

Sometimes you find yourself unable to sleep in a hotel. Therefore, in order to get a full night's rest in a bed unfamiliar to you, firstly, try to reduce as much noise as you can.Find out the location of the possible hotel you want to stay at and see if it is near possible noise sources(来源), such as highways or airports. Before being given a room, ask if there are any quiet rooms. These rooms are located on upper floors and away from elevators.Make sure the room is at least two or three floors above the dining rooms.Another idea is to ask for rooms located in the back of the building, away from parking lots.
While finding the right room is important, it's also helpful to pack a few key items to make your hotel stay as pleasurable as possible.Pack some earplugs(耳塞),which can prevent noise entering your ears.Packing a sleep mask is also a good idea because it will prevent any annoying light entering the room, which is necessary if your room doesn't have curtains. If possible, bring some sheets, pillowcases, or blankets from your home. You'll find that your body is used to the material, which can help you sleep faster.
Before you decide to go to bed, there are some further steps you can take to prepare yourself.Don't eat before sleeping. You can also try having a small cup of tea or a glass of wine.Ask the receptionist not to put any call through to your room, making sure that you will not be woken up in the middle of the night.Remember to adjust (调节) the temperature in the room to your liking. You can also take a warm bath, which lowers body temperature enough to help make sleeping easier.
If you're a person who depends on background noise to sleep in hotels, there are plenty of steps you can try.You can put on background music and wear headphones. Also you can try putting the television on low, but make sure it will not annoy your neighbors.
Once you're in bed, clear your thoughts. If you have ideas and feelings controlling your mind, you'll find that it will be difficult to concentrate on sleeping.Look for ways to control your breathing and find a comfortable position (位置)on the bed. While sleeping in a new room might be scary at first, following these steps will help you make sure that your nights in hotels will be quite peaceful.

consist of“由……组成,由……构成”,不用于被动语态中;be made up of“由……构成/组成”;be made of“由……制成”。故选项B正确。
3.D 表示前面的否定情况也适用于后者时常用“Neither/Nor+be动词/助动词/情态动词+另一主语”,故D项切题。
4.A 句意:——你的报告完成了吗?——没有,再过十分钟才能完成。another ten minutes表示“还需要10分钟”,可用ten more minutes替换。
not really并非如此,how come怎么可能,no way不可能。
have sth.to do有某事要做(do所表示的动作由主语发出),have sth.to be done有某事要做(do所表示的动作不是主语发出的),此处you不是wash这一动作的执行者,故不定式用被动式,选A。
take off起飞,迅速流行;take out带……出去;take away带走;take in欺骗。
定语从句先行词为plan,从句谓语动词为see,关系代词代替the plan在从句中作宾语,the plan与carry out之间为动宾关系,故应用过去分词作宾补,构成see sth.done结构。
11.C as well as连接的两个名词作主语时,谓语动词与as well as之前的名词在人称和数上保持一致,排除B、D。
either...or...

There used to be a term that was used to describe someone who drove their vehicles down the highway while staring at the scenery. These drivers just drove slowly, taking their own sweet time,as if they had nothing to do and no place in particular to go.Thus, the expression,“Sunday driver”,was born.Consequently,a Sunday driver wasn't necessarily someone who was driving on a Sunday.A person could be a Sunday driver any day of the week.The_expression_simply_meant_that_the_person_was_an_obstacle_to_other_drivers_who_were_in_a_hurry.
The expression probably came about because there was a time when people would often decide to go for a relaxing drive on Sunday afternoons.A Sunday drive was a common occurrence years ago and especially on a nice warm sunny day. There were no stores open on Sunday because of the“blue laws”,so you needed to be sure and fill up the gas tank and make any other needed purchases before Sunday arrived.
Some of the states had strict blue laws that even prohibited some activities on Sunday. However, there is still a lot to be said for the slow, gentle life that once existed. It was a time when very few people worked on Sunday except for those professions vital to our well-being such as those in the medical profession. It was a day“set apart” that was used to rest, visit with neighbors and friends, or maybe go to grandma's house for supper.Today there are many who return to work and children who go back to school overly tired on Monday due to a lack of rest.Perhaps there would be less stress related illnesses if we really kept Sunday as a day of rest.

At dawn on Friday, May 19,1780,farmers in New England stopped to wonder at the pink color of the sun.By noon the sky had darkened to midnight blackness, causing Americans, still in the painful struggle of a prolonged war of independence,to light candles and tremble at thoughts of the Last Judgment. As the birds quieted and no storm accompanied the darkness, men and women crowded into churches, where one minister commented that“The people were very attentive”.John Greenleaf Whittier later wrote that “Men prayed, and women wept;all ears grew sharp...”
A recent study of researchers, led by Richard Guyette from the University of Missouri Tree-Ring Laboratory, has shown that vast forest fires in the Algonquin Highlands of southern Ontario and elsewhere in Canada brought this event upon New England. The scientists have discovered“fire scars”on the rings for that year, left when the heat of a wildfire has killed a part of a tree's cambium (形成层).Evidence collected also points to a drought that year.An easterly wind and low barometric pressure (低气压) helped force smoke into the upper atmosphere.“The record fits pretty close,” says Guyette.“We had the right fuel, the drought. The conditions were all there.”
Lacking the ability to communicate quickly over long distances, Americans in 1780 remained in the dark about the event, which had disappeared by the next day.Over the next several months, the papers carried heated debates about what brought the darkness. Some were the voices of angry prediction, such as one Massachusetts farmer who wrote,“Oh! Backsliding New England, attend now to the things which belong to your peace before they are forever hid from your eyes.”Others gave different answers. One stated that “a flaming star” had passed between the earth and the sun.Ash, argued another commentator. The debate, carried on throughout New England, where there were no scientific journals or academies yet, reflected an unfolding culture of scientific enquiry already sweeping the Western world,a revolution nearly as influential as the war for independence from the English.
New Englanders would not soon forget that dark day;it lived on in folklore, poems, and sermons for generations

Ending your day the right way will make sure that you look back on it with a sense of achievement and satisfaction, making it easier to get up and go to work the next morning. So there are some things that all workers should do at the end of every workday.
Evaluate(评估) your to-do list.Make sure you're where you need to be on these activities and that you've completed as much as you could. If you aren't satisfied with where you are, plan what you need to do and when you'll do it, so you don't get further behind. If you can quickly get something done before you leave,do it.More importantly, decide what you must complete the next day and make a new to-do list. This will save your time the next morning.
Go over your schedule for the next day.Make sure you're aware of any meeting or call for the following day.You can also use this chance to schedule time on your calendar (日程表)to complete any remaining items from today's to-do list.Think about one thing you are most looking forward to tomorrow. It'll help you leave behind what's happened today, improve your present mood and put a full stop to your workday.
Tidy up.Before walking out of the room, take a few minutes to throw any trash, organize your paperwork and tidy up your desk. This will give you a feeling of a fresh start when you arrive the next morning. You should also spare at least 15 minutes at the end of your day to sort through those happy hour invitations, unnecessary emails, and so on.
Leave in a positive manner.Find something positive that makes you feel good about your job and make sure that moment is the last thing on your mind before walking out of the office. If you have people reporting to you,say a few words of encouragement. Most workers want to feel appreciated and know they're making a difference in the big picture.Equally importantly, say goodbye to everyone in a friendly way before you leave.
Leave your stress at the door. When you walk out of the office, remember to leave your stress behind.Leaving the office at the end of the day can be difficult, but carrying your stress home with you won't do any good.Your family needs you to be present, so do what you can to make sure your stress stays at the office.

Drive-in movie theaters are considered an American invention.Drive-ins became very popular in the United States after World War Two.They combined two popular loves in America: cars and movies.
The first drive-in movie theater opened in the United States in 1933.People could watch a film on the big screen while sitting in their car, eating, talking and relaxing.
Many drive-in theaters opened in the 1950s, as the American economy expanded(发展)after the war and more people bought cars.In the 1960s,there were between 4,000 and 6,000 drive-in theaters in the United States. There wasn't really television at that point in all the homes. And so it was just sort of this thing that families did where they saw their neighbors, where they took their kids. But almost as soon as drive-ins were everywhere, their popularity began to fade.Today, fewer than 400 are still operating in the United States. So why did drive-ins lose their appeal (吸引力)?
Some of the older theaters were dirty and the quality of the films declined. In the late 1960s, more people were buying color televisions. And more indoor theaters were opening with multiple choices of films. The 1970s and the 1980s brought video rentals (录影带租借) and cable TV with many choices of channels.Televisions made it easier and cheaper to stay at home for entertainment.
Today, there are more choices and more ways than ever to experience entertainment. If you really want to watch a movie in your car,you could watch it on a DVD player or stream video on a mobile device. You don't have to go to a drive-in any more.
In spite of that, some people still think drive-in movie theaters can still be an important focus in the cultural life of a community and they still go there.

ices for relaxing
5.What is the BEST title of this passage?

Ⅰ.1.extreme 2.complaint 3.bone 4.solution 5.historical 6.fled 7.ashes 8.institute
9.disaster 10.beneath
4.B 题干中含有“have difficulty(in)doing sth.”
第一句中的consider意为“认为”,be considered to have done意为“被认为做了某事”;第二句中的consider意为“考虑”,consider doing sth.
7.B It remains to be seen...
appeal to对……有吸引力;call for要求;focus on集中精力于……;come to谈到,涉及。
A as well as B作主语时,遵循“就前原则”,也就是说谓语动词要和A保持一致。也可以理解为本句的主语是A而不是B,所以本题谓语动词的数要和the famous musician保持一致,用was invited。
分析句子结构可知,该句的主语部分为students' inner motivation with high expectations from others,中心词inner motivation显然为第三人称单数。
本题考查let sb.do sth.
I was about to go on a long drive...

7.B 联系句中的I said hello可知,这个人向作者问好(greeted)。
I saw that they had two carts starting to fill with __6__可以推知,他们是收集(collecting)捐赠的。
10.C 根据句中的...about the boy and his efforts to collect food donations since the age of 8可以推知,单子上内容还包括有关小男孩8岁以来收集捐赠的故事(story)。
13.B 根据下文中的...the store didn't have it等语境可知,作者走(walked)进商店。
