Christmas Traditions
The Origin of Christmas
Since about 400 AD,Christmas Day has been celebrated on 25th December. This date was the old mid-winter festival in pre-Christian times, around the time of the longest night and the shortest day.Christmas in the 21st century has many traditions:Christmas trees, cards and presents.
Presents and shopping
Shops can make about 60 per cent of their year's income in the three months before Christmas. So most shops get ready for it in October. The shopping centres are beautifully decorated and stay open late at night. The first time this happened was in 1867 when Macy's,a famous shop in New York, stayed open until midnight on Christmas Eve(24th December).
Trees
By mid-December,almost every house, shop and street has a Christmas tree. This tradition was started by the Germans as early as 700 AD.In the northern countries of the world, winter is cold and dark and most trees lose their leaves. The beautiful green trees decorated with lights and coloured glass balls give people hope that spring will come again.
Cards
The tradition of sending cards to friends was started in 1840 in the UK and now millions of Christmas cards and emails are sent all round the world.Cards are a good way of keeping in touch with family and friends who live far away.
Father Christmas
Father Christmas is known across the world with his white hair, red coat and big bag of toys.Young children are told that he lives in the north of Finland and makes toys for them.By tradition,he brings the toys to children at midnight,on the night before Christmas.
Food
On Christmas day a traditional meal is eaten, usually turkey(like a big chicken)and a rich, spicy cake. Some people hate Christmas.Others feel it is a magical and exciting time. They love seeing family and friends;they also love the traditions.Love it or hate it,Christmas is a time to look back over the old year—and forward to the new one.

The population of the United States is growing older and will continue to do so. According to a report, 39 million Americans will be 65 or older by the year 2010,51 million by 2020,and 65 million by 2030.
The “graying”of the United States is mainly due to the fact that people in the U. S. are living longer. As a matter of fact, the number of U. S. citizens 85 years old and older is growing six times as fast as the rest of the population. It is also largely due to the old-growing of the“baby boomers”,the generation born after World War Ⅱ. In 1957,over 4.3 million babies were born. More than 75 million Americans were born between 1946 and 1964,the largest generation in U. S. history. In less than twenty years, millions of them will become elderly people.
The“graying”of the U. S. will greatly affect the nation's family and workforce; one likely development will be a gradual change in the family unit; it will move away from the nuclear family and towards a multi-generational family. The other likely development will be a change in the proportion (比例) of the nation's workforce. In 1989 there were 3.5 workers for every person 65 and older; by the year 2030,there will only be 2 workers for every person 65 and older.

Time management is a skill that can be learned. First, you need to understand how your time is spent. Keep a record for several days documenting how much time is spent in class, studying, visiting friends and family, working and eating. Take a look at the list to see ________.
Once you know how your time is spent, start a daily or weekly planner (记事簿). Put down your classes, appointments, meetings, work schedule, assignment due dates and other activities. Check the planner every day so you will know what needs to be done that day. A daily “to-do” list may assist you in knowing what needs to be done immediately.Get a copy of your school calendar and put in the important dates and holidays, so you will know when to expect tests and other important events.
In order to use your time wisely, put your assignments in a priority order with the most difficult one first. If you do your most difficult task at the beginning, it will be out of the way and the others will be easier.Be sure to schedule enough time to study and start studying in a distraction free environment.
Schedule time to allow for tests, papers, and speeches. These larger assignments may need to be broken down into smaller bits and pieces.Be sure to go over your lecture notes within a twenty-four-hour time period to keep the material fresh in your mind. Try to review your notes and any reading just before your class period so the material will be fresh in your mind.
Once you become aware of how you use your time, you will be able to manage it and do well in your studies.

1.B make the most of意为“充分利用”,为固定搭配,由此排除A、C两项。
It's likely to rain.it指天。
recognition“认可”;contribution“贡献”;devotion“奉献,专心”;attraction“吸引”。
come up with提出;make up for弥补;make use of利用。
9.D 第一空可用sitting和seated作宾补,her与sit是主谓关系,seat与her为动宾关系;第二空用fixed作宾补,fix与her attention为动宾关系。
out of one's reach 某人够不着;out of touch失去联系;out of sight看不见。
22.B 根据上文的she looked through the small open space and...,此处指动作再次重复了一遍。
28.unless/until/before 29.a 30.their 31.for 32.every/each/an 33.where 34.warm 35.but
根据第一段的内容“Students plan Homecoming Day for many weeks in advance.”
根据文章第五段最后一句话“It is a great honor to be chosen.”
从“All the students vote a most popular student”可知道这是学生之间的评选活动,而没有涉及“客人”或者是“队员”和“选手”。
A的诱答性很强,但根据第二段最后一句mainly because it is Jesus' birthday,应该选B。
51.Graying U.S. 52.By 2010 53.Causes/Reasons
54.citizens' living longer 55.Effects/Results
56.family unit change 57.workforce 58.Nuclear family 59.Workers 60.In 1989
61.Time management for students
62.where your time is going/how your time is spent
63.A daily “to-do” list may assist you in knowing what needs to be done immediately.
64.Start a daily or weekly planner and write down the things you should do.

My Teacher Mrs.Amon
Of all my teachers,Mrs.Amon is the one who impresses me most.Though she is 44,she looks very young for her age.And she's one of the most popular teachers in our school.
Compared with other teachers,Mrs.Amon pays more attention to her way of teaching. She tries various ways to make her classes lively and interesting. In her opinion,we should not only know “what”,but also understand “why”.So,instead of giving us answers immediately, she encourages us to think by ourselves whenever she puts forward questions. With her help,we've learned how to analyze and settle problems. What a wonderful world of “why” she leads us to!
She is such a learned person that we all admire her very much.

One evening I was parked in front of the mall wiping spots of mud off my car.I had just come from the company and was waiting for my wife. She was buying presents for her mother.Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a beggar. From his looks,he had no car,no home,no clean clothes and no money.
There are times when you feel generous, but there are times that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one of the times that“you don't want to be bothered and hope he doesn't ask me for money,” I thought. But he didn't.
After a few minutes he spoke.“That's a very nice car,”he said.He dressed poorly, but had an air of dignity (尊严) around him.I said “Thanks” and continued cleaning my car.
He watched quietly as I worked. The expected plea (请求) for money never came.As the silence between us widened, something inside said,“Ask him if he needs any help.” I was sure that he would say yes,but I held true to the inner voice.
“Do you need any help?” I asked.I expected nothing but a dirty hand.He spoke three words that shocked me and I shall never forget.“Don't we all?” he said.
I needed help.Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed help. Those three words still ring true.No matter how much you have, you need help.No matter how little you have, you can give help.
Maybe he was an angel, dressed like a beggar.Maybe the man was just a homeless beggar, but his words were reasonable.

I saw a lady with a guide dog pass my window. Before she had managed to disappear from view she stopped. After a minute or so I watched as she signalled her dog to walk forward, the dog however remained sitting and refused to move. This continued for another minute or so until I was so puzzled by it that I went out to see what was happening.Sure enough the woman was still standing and trying in vain to get the dog to move forward.
I approached and asked what the problem was.She explained that a car a few yards ahead had its tyres on the kerb(路沿)and its motor running. In a situation like this the dog is trained not to proceed but will wait for the car to either move on or have its engine turned off.As I looked at the car I was able to tell the blind lady that in fact there was no one in it.The driver had left the engine running and popped into a shop for something.I waited another 2 or 3 minutes until the driver returned and hopped into the car totally oblivious to the inconvenience he had caused.
I pointed out what had happened to the driver who seemed a little embarrassed and shot off in the car.Only a week or so later I saw the same thing.Only this time I had the answer.Once again the same blind lady and her dog were on one side of the path. The dog sat on the pavement and the lady signalling it to move forward. This time a van was parked at the side of the dirt track, the driver reading a newspaper with his engine running to keep warm.I was able to explain to the van driver what was happening and he immediately switched the engine off and the dog got up and crossed the dirt track.
A lesson to us all? It was to me and one I will never forget.

Sydney-A shark savaged a schoolboy's leg while he was surfing with his father at a beach in Sydney on February 23.It was the third shark attack along the coast of Australia's largest city in a month.
The 15-year-old boy and his father were in the water off Avalon,on Sydney's northern beaches, around dawn when he was attacked. The city's beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the summer months.
“The father heard a scream and turned to see his son thrashing (激烈扭动) about in the water,”police said.“Fortunately, the shark swam away and the boy was helped to the shore by his father.”
Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller said,“It got him around the top of his left leg and the father came and dragged him out of water.”He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to the shore.“There was a lot of pain,as you could imagine.”The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment for leg injuries.
Police said the bites “cut through to the bone”,but the boy did not appear to have sustained any fractures(骨折).He was in a stable condition now.
Several beaches were closed after the attack.Water police and lifeguards were searching for the shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too early to say what type of shark attacked the boy.“I don't even know if he saw it.”Miller said.
Many shark species live in the waters off Sydney's beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively rare. However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the city's world-famous Bondi beach.
Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks.Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to the shore as they chase fish. Many shark species, including the Great White—the man-eaters made famous in Steven Spielberg's Jaws—are protected in Australian waters.

“Happiness Advantage” Effect
(2013·湖南师大附中高一期末)In July 2010 Burt's Bees, a personal-care products company, was going through big change as it began a global expansion into 19 new countries. In this kind of high-pressure situation, many leaders bother their assistants with frequent meetings. In doing so, managers lift everyone's anxiety level, which is responsible for effective problem solving.
Burt's Bees's then-CEO, John Wolfgang, took a different approach. Each day, he'd send out an e-mail that praises team members for work related to global marketing. He'd remind his managers to talk with their teams about the company's values. He asked his managers to hold another three-hour meeting on happiness with employees in the course of the expansion effort. Wolfgang's emphasis on developing positive leadership kept his managers loyal as they successfully transformed the company into a global one.
That outcome shouldn't surprise us. Research shows that when people work with a positive mind-set(思维模式), performance on nearly every level—productivity, creativity,—improves. People who have a positive mind-set perform better in the face of challenge. I call this the“happiness advantage”—every business outcome shows that it has been improved when the brain is positive. I've observed this effect in my role as a researcher and lecturer in 48 countries on the connection between employee happiness and success. In an analysis of 225 academic studies, researchers found strong evidence of cause-and-effect relationship between life satisfaction and successful business outcomes.
A common misunderstanding is that only our genetics, our environment, or a combination of the two determines how happy we are. To be sure, both factors have effects. But one's general sense of happiness is surprisingly unstable. The habits we form, the way we interact with colleagues, how we think about stress—all these can be managed to increase our happiness and our chances of success.

Kids may need to apologize if they do something wrong-like telling a lie or breaking a rule on purpose. When they do something their parents tell them not to do,or they don't do something they are supposed to do,they apologize, too.
Grown-ups can apologize, too—to other grown-ups or even to kids. After all, even grown-ups make mistakes sometimes.By apologizing when they're wrong,grown-ups can set a good example and show kids how to do the right thing and apologize when they need to.
Saying “I'm sorry” when you need to is the right thing to do.It does a lot of good. But by itself,it might not be enough to make everything all better again.Sometimes along with an apology,a person needs to fix the mistake or promise to do better.Sometimes doing a nice thing for the person after you apologize helps show that you really are sorry and want to be friendly again.
Sometimes a heartfelt (由衷的)“I'm sorry” fixes everything right away.Other times,it might take a while for someone to feel friendly after you apologize. You might need to give the other person some time.Even after you say you're sorry, you might still feel bad about what you said or did-but you can feel good about apologizing and about making up your mind to do better.
When someone apologizes to you,you might not feel like being friendly again right away.Once in a while,if a person doesn't change, you might not want to be friends anymore. You might feel glad that the other person apologized and admitted being wrong. But if someone keeps behaving in mean ways or does something that keeps hurting, you might not feel the same way anymore.Someone apologizes to you;it doesn't mean you have to be friendly again. That part is up to you.

Ⅰ.1.puzzled 2.recognized 3.volunteers 4.ignored 5.reduced 6.sniffed 7.analyse
8.sweat 9.firmly 10.approach
5.D 由本题题干中的“When I was young”可知后面的句子应用一般过去时。
该句包含一个由whether引导的主语从句“whether the newly formed committee's policy can be put into practice”,该主语从句不缺成分,所以排除B和C;由语境中的remains to be seen可知,“是否实施新政策”还有待观察,所以此处要用whether。
have total belief that...
13.B 句意:你为什么不让他注意到你病得无法继续工作这一事实呢?it在此作形式宾语,真正的宾语是后置的从句that you're too ill to work on。
4.C 根据后句“After all,both of them are college students.”
6.A 根据persuaded me not to do that可知,作者放弃了那个愚蠢的想法。
8.A 从后边的tell me they are proud of me可知父母很高兴。
9.C 根据句中的...get an “A”on a project判断,这些学生想与他人分享自己的快乐。
12.D 根据前面的they are proud of me可知作者希望自己能继续使父母骄傲。
13.So 14.it 15.could 16.in 17.As 18.too 19.which 20.more
Saying “I'm sorry” when you need to is the right thing to do.It does a lot of good很明显可以看出,代词it指代saying “I'm sorry”。
You might feel glad that the other person apologized and admitted being wrong可以推知,当朋友伤害了你,你想让他/她承认“我错了”。
