At my heaviest, my weight rose to 160 pounds. My mother criticized(批评) me when she noticed my weight reaching 110 pounds. I thought she was unhappy when considering I was thin while she was beyond fat, but her words made me fear getting fat. I started freaking when my weight passed 130 pounds. Last fall, my doctor suggested that I walk my dogs more.
My weight at that time was 141 pounds. He told me that I could lose weight by walking my dogs. Every morning, after most people in the neighborhood go to work and after I finish my first few articles, I walk both of my dogs. They both love walk time and I love to walk them. The neighbors have got used to seeing us take our morning walk. They wave, walk out, and pet the dogs and then we move on.
I started out at 160 pounds and I'm getting closer to 130 pounds. I am proud of the fact that I have lost so much weight. My husband is proud, too. I am looking forward to comfortably fitting myself into a size 8 and maybe even finally dropping to a size 6.

Section A (10 marks)
One of the advantages of being self-employed is that the profit the business makes belongs to the owner. If the self-employed person is successful in business, he or she has the chance to earn plenty of money and even become wealthy. The profit earned by a self-employed person is the reward for his or her effort, ability and creativity. Thus, a second advantage of being self-employed is that a person's intelligence and abilities have a direct effect on his or her earnings. People who have out-standing abilities or intelligence often find they can earn far more through self-employment than they can through working as an employee. A third advantage of being self-employed is that a person can control their working hours. While not all self-employed people are completely free to choose whatever hour they want to work, most of them have more control over this area than the people who work for salaries or wages.
As with most things in life, being self-employed is not without problems. First, being one's own boss places the responsibilities for success directly on that individual's shoulders. Abilities and intelligence will be put to the test. Everyone has some weakness and is less capable in some things than in others. These weaknesses will affect how successful a self-employed person is. Second, though the self-employed can earn considerable profits with a successful business, losses can force them out of business and, in some instances, place them in debt. A third disadvantages concerns income security. Self-employed people have no guaranteed wage, depending on business conditions. Salaried people, on the other hand, can generally count on continued earnings from year to year. In addition, salaried people often enjoy fringe benefits (额外的福利), which are all of the benefits provided for employees in addition to wages and salaries. One of these benefits may be insurance paid for by employee's salary in the event of sickness or accident. Many self-employed people do not have such protection, unless they put money aside themselves.

Walking in any high school during the first class in the morning, you will find many students are struggling to stay awake.
“They're sitting in the classroom, but their heads are at home on the pillows.” said a teacher from a high school.
Don't blame them; blame the clocks in their brains. A research suggests that biological clocks make teens stay up at night and sleep in the morning.
During the first several weeks of school, students are more likely to lack sleep. In the holidays, students can sleep eight hours a night, but during the school days, they sleep only about six hours on average. Students lose 10 hours' sleep a week. This may affect their school performances and leads to poor health.
Scientists in the US did research to reset teenagers' biological clock to help them fall asleep earlier. They found the brain can produce a chemical that helps sleep. But it comes out only in the dark. So they use a special light in the classroom to try to force a reset of the students' biological clock.
The research failed in the end. So some schools in the US tried to reset their school time from 7:25 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The results seemed to be good.

Take most of us for example, the entrance exam to college seems to be a horrible monster. Accordingly, some people give up, some persist. In my eyes, with confidence, right assessment of the difficulties, as well as full preparation, try and exert your strength, and then we will overcome all problems and challenges. On the whole,I believe we youngsters should face the difficulties in right manner. And nothing is impossible, brave it out and just do it!

Almost every language in the world has a saying that a person can never be too rich.
Americans, like people in other countries, always want more money. One way they express this is by protesting(抗议) that their jobs do not pay enough.A common expression is,“I am working for chickenfeed.”It means working for very little money. The expression probably began because seeds fed to chickens made people think of small change.Small change means metal coins of not much value, like a nickel which is worth five cents.
An early use of the word chickenfeed appeared in an American publication in nineteen thirty. It told of a rich man and his son.Word expert Mitford Mathews says it read,“I'll bet neither the kid nor his father ever saw a nickel or a dime. They would not have been interested in such chickenfeed.”
Chickenfeed also has another interesting meaning known to history experts and World War Ⅱ spies and soldiers.
Spy expert Henry S.A.Becket writes that some German spies working in London during the war also worked for the British. The British government had to make the Germans believe their spies were working. So,British officials gave them mostly false information. It was called chickenfeed.
The same person who protests that he is working for chickenfeed may also say,“I am working for peanuts.”He means he is working for a small amount of money. It is a very different meaning from the main one in the dictionary. That meaning is small nuts that grow on a plant. No one knows for sure how a word for something to eat also came to mean something very small. But,a peanut is a very small food.

Ⅲ.阅读理解
(2013·无锡高一检测)During lectures,my students often ask which is the most difficult language to learn. It's not easy to answer because there are many factors to take into consideration. For a person's first language these factors are unimportant because people learn their mother tongue naturally. So the question of how hard a language is to learn is only relevant when learning a second language.
Studies have shown that native speakers of Spanish find Portuguese much easier to learn than, say, native speakers of Chinese, because Portuguese is very similar to Spanish, while Chinese is very different. So a person's first language affects their learning of a second language. The greater the differences between a second language and the first, the harder it will be for most people to learn. Many Westerners think that Chinese is the hardest language to learn because of its writing system and pronunciation. But for Japanese speakers, who already use Chinese characters in their own language, learning writing is less difficult than for speakers of languages using the Roman alphabet.
A recent study reported that British embassy staff found that the second hardest language to learn was Japanese.More surprising was the language that they found most problematic-Hungarian.In this case the issue was not the writing system(as both English and Hungarian use a similar alphabet) but grammatical complexity.Hungarian has 35 cases (forms of a noun according to whether it is subject, object, genitive, etc.) and it was this that caused the British diplomatic personnel most difficulty. One suspects they would have even more problems with Tabasaran,a Caucasian language with 48 cases,if they ever had to learn it.
Teachers and the circumstances in which a language is learned also play important roles,as does each learner's motivation for learning. If people learn a language because they need to use it professionally, they often learn it faster than people studying a language that has no direct use in their day-to-day life.
Put simply,no language is easy to learn well, though languages which are related to our first language are easier.Learning a completely different writing system is a huge challenge, but that does not necessarily make a language more difficult than another. In the end,it is impossible to say that there is one language that is the most difficult language in the world.
1.According to the passage, who is likely to have the most difficulty learning a new language?
A.A Korean person learning French.
B.A Spanish person learning Portuguese.
C.A German person learning English.
D.A Chinese person learning Japanese.
2.Which language do British embassy staff find most difficult to learn?
A.Japanese. B.Caucasian.

3.Which of the following is Not mentioned as a factor affecting language learning?
A.The amount of time spent studying the new language.
B.The environment in which language learning takes place.
C.The reasons a person has for learning the new language.
D.The similarity between a person's first language and the new language.
4.Why does the author believe there's no single hardest language?
A.All languages are equally difficult to learn well.
B.With enough effort, any language can be learned well.
C.There is not enough evidence to make any final
conclusion
D.To different people, the hardest language is different.
5.The writer is probably ________.
A.a language learner

Ⅳ.阅读填空
(2013·浏阳八中高一下期中考试)Charlie Chaplin's (卓别林) comedy was rich in creativity and cleverness. His ability to make people laugh by being humorous and funny was a rare gift. On stage, he always wore a small black hat, a pair of trousers which were wide and a moustache, and carried a stick that he swung (舞动) in the air as he walked.
Born in London, England on April 16th, 1889, Chaplin lived with his mother who made a living by sewing. She had some illness and sometimes was unable to work or deal with ordinary situations of life, leaving Charlie and his elder brother Sidney taking care of themselves or to live in a home which was supported by the government.
When Chaplin was 9, he toured with a stage company and had his first taste of life on the stage. He later took small acting jobs and toured with several troupes (剧团) . He finally toured the United States and decided to stay there in 1912.
After reaching the United States, he had parts in nine movies in only two months. Although his parts were small, his star quickly rose with the introduction of his world-famous tramp (流浪者) character. However,he wasn't satisfied to only act before camera,so he began to direct as well.At the age of 25, he directed his first film, “Twenty Minutes of Love”. This began an interesting part of his professional (职业的) life.
Satire (讽刺) was a comedic tool used by Chaplin and was most clear in his first sound film “The Great Dictator” which was released (发行) in 1940. In the film, he used the dangerous ideas of Adolf Hitler (希特勒). The German ruler must have appreciated the humorous film because it was believed that he grew his mustache in imitation of (模仿) Chaplin.
Though having experienced a number of ups and downs, he perfected his artistic skills. Charlie Chaplin is larger than life and deserves to be a legend.

In the English language there are striking similarities to many of the characteristics present in Spanish,French, and German. So what are the things that make English so difficult for foreign people to learn?
English doesn't necessarily have more regular consonant(辅音) or vowel(元音) sounds than other languages, but how the stress is placed on some of those consonants or vowels makes it such a difficult language for learners. There are hard and soft consonants like “c” taking on a “k” sound or an “s” sound depending upon the situation. There are silent letters in some words and then some consonants that take on an entirely different sound (like “th”)when combined. The changes in the pronunciation of words make English much more difficult to learn.
Another thing that makes English difficult to learn has to do with verb tense. Some languages have very limited changes in verb tense, sometimes just present and past, which makes it relatively simple to grasp.English,on the other hand,is a bit more difficult in this area. For example,in different situations it may be proper to use any of the following tenses: present, past, future, past perfect or present perfect. The verb “choose”can be used in the following forms depending on tense: choose, chose or chosen. This can be very difficult for a foreigner to grasp.
Slang is more widely used in American English than proper grammar. In the US just knowing the language as it's generally taught isn't enough. In every single region or even close neighborhoods, the same slang terms make an almost entirely different language. In some areas there are repeatedly used terms that wouldn't even be found in the Webster's Dictionary. They are created by locals and only locals understand them. This can make it very difficult for someone not familiar with the language to get used to it,especially if they don't remain in one area for a very long period.
1.The purpose of this passage is to________.
A.give advice on how to learn English well
B.tell us why English is very difficult to learn
C.encourage us to speak formal English
D.tell us how to deal with slang terms in English

______.
A.is always stressed
B.never takes on an “s” sound
C.has at least two sounds

The Super Ball has been popular for many years,so we think most of us have played with a Super Ball. These rubber bouncy(弹性的)balls are famous for the amazing heights they can reach bounce after bounce.
The Super Ball was invented in 1964 by Norman Stingley, who was a chemist at the Bettis Rubber Company. He finally sold his invention to a toy manufacturer Wham-O.Wham-O helped him to perfect his invention into the famous toy we know today.
The Super Ball is a rubber ball known for its high bounce and restitution(恢复原状).How high? You might be surprised! When dropped from the shoulder level,a Super Ball will bounce back almost all the way to where it was dropped.Thrown towards the ground by an average adult,a Super Ball can bounce as high as a three-story building.
Wham-O once created a large Super Ball, whose size was the same as a bowling ball.It was dropped from the top of an Australian hotel and destroyed a parked car on its second bounce!
In the 1960s,the Super Ball quickly became a fashionable toy.By the end of 1965,Wham-O had sold over six million of the bouncy balls. Finally, miniature versions(微型版)of the bouncy balls could be made as small as a dime in toy vending machines.
The Super Ball also can claim(宣称)to be the inspiration for the name of one of the most popular sporting events in the world.Lamar Hunt, who founded the American Football League, jokingly suggested that each year's football championship(冠军)be called the“Super Bowl”after watching his kids play with a Super Ball.It may have just been a joke, but sports writers quickly picked up on the name!
