Study after study shows that regular moderate walking can help you lose weight and reduce your risk of heart disease.
In a study,Japanese researchers tested obese men before and after they joined a one-year modest walking plan. All they did was up the number of steps they took during their daily activities, such as walking from the car to the grocery store. The result: Their blood pressure and cholesterol levels improved and the amount of body fat around their abdomen(腹部) —the dangerous kind of fat that leads to higher rates of heart disease—greatly decreased.
That's good news, because walking has now become the most popular fitness activity in the United States.Convenient, simple, and gentle on the joints, walking is perhaps the easiest form of exercise to maintain.According to surveys, four out of five women who start a walking program continue to walk, while half of women who attempt other types of aerobic exercise, such as swimming,drop_out during the first few months.
Here are some ways to put more walking into your life.
1.Learn the basics. Before you take your next step outdoors, you need to know how much walking to do,and how often.
2.Pick a charity—it could be breast cancer, the American Red Cross, the United Way—and pledge to contribute D|S1 for every mile you walk. You'll take pride in the fact that you are walking for something beyond yourself.
3.Walk with a friend. If she's expecting you, you're more likely to get out of bed on cold winter mornings or skip the cafeteria for a lunchtime walk.
4.Walk for entertainment one day a week.Instead of walking around your neighborhood, walk through the zoo,an art museum,or a shopping mall.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing?Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all,you probably sing or whistle(吹口哨)when you are happy. However, some scientists believe that birds sing out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims(声称)as its own.Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome.Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you,you might shout.Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so,you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him.A bird does the same thing. But he expects no outsiders almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird's song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
41.Some scientists believe that most of the time birds' singing is actually________.

B.a way of warning

D.Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.

A.By comparing birds with human beings.
B.By reporting experiment results.

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home?People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight.A recent research has found a new recipe of success.According to the study,if the cat is adopted before the dog,and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats,a year for dogs),it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly.Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.
However,it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “Dog”,and dogs can learn how to talk “Cat”.
What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected.Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom(梳理)each other.
The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets—to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

(2012·湖南师大附中高一段考)While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can't be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.
Try physical activity.
When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.
Take care of yourself.
You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.
Make time for yourself.
Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don't forget, play can be just as important to you over-all well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window-shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.
Make a list of the things you need to do.
Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there's so much to do, and not enough time. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time. Set out to do the most important tasks first. Check off each task as it is completed.

TV viewers may no longer be able to hear English abbreviations(缩写), like “NBA” (National Basketball Association), from mainland broadcasters.
China Central Television (CCTV) and Beijing Television (BTV) confirmed to China Daily on Tuesday that they had received a notice from a related government department, asking them to avoid using certain English abbreviations in Chinese programs.
The channels, however, did not reveal exactly how many English abbreviations are listed in the notice.
The notice not only limits the use of English abbreviations in sports news, but also in economic and political news. Abbreviations such as “GDP” (gross domestic product), “WTO” (World Trade Organization) and “CPI” (consumer price index) will also be substituted(代替) with their Chinese pronunciations, it said.
The move comes after a growing number of national legislators(立法委员) and political advisors called for preventive measures to preserve(保存) the purity of the Chinese language.
“If we don't pay attention and don't take measures to stop mixing Chinese with English, the Chinese language won't remain pure in a couple of years,” said Huang Youyi, editor-in-chief of the China International Publishing Group and secretary-general of the Translators' Association of China.
The restricted use of English abbreviations on Chinese television programs has provoked a debate among scholars.
“It makes no sense to introduce a regulation to prevent the use of English in the Chinese language in the face of globalization(全球化),” Liu Yaoying, a professor at the Communication University of China, said on Tuesday. “It is cultural conservatism(保守主义).”
“If Western countries can accept some Chinglish words, why can't the Chinese language be mixed with English?”

be fond of doing sth./enjoy doing sth.“喜欢做某事”。
have difficulty (in) doing sth.
4.B 考查devote one's time to doing sth.
7.A make use of“利用”,use提到前面作先行词,make of改为定语从句的形式。we make of the used paper这个定语从句中,省去了关系代词which或者that。
used to do sth. be used to do表示“被用来……”;be(get)used to sth.,be used to doing sth.
If “如果”; As “就如;因为”; Though“尽管”;Unless “除非”。
12.C 不定式作定语;she thought of是定语从句,修饰the way。
whether...or...
no more than“仅仅”,nothing but“只不过”,not more than“不超过”,都不合题意。
16.B 根据下文have a lot of friends可以推断他们待人有礼貌(polite)。

28.a 29.as 30.if 31.whose 32.of 33.it
34.who 35.them

由“four out of five women who start a walking program continue to walk, while half of women who attempt other types of aerobic exercise, such as swimming,drop_out during the first few months.” give up放弃;take part in参加;go in for参加,爱好;fall behind落后。
39.A 计算题。由文中“four out of five women who start a walking program continue to walk,”可知4/5的女士继续步行,1/5的女士放弃了步行。

由本句的前两句“...they will fight.A recent research has found a new recipe of success.”的逻辑关系,特别是new一词,我们知道,两者“相处得好”;再由本句后面一句中的“a positive relationship between their cat and dog”可以进一步确定猫狗“相处得好”,故选D。
只是用“are less different(不同点更少了)”替代了原文的“have more in common(共同点更多了)”;用同义词thought来替代suspected。

Many Chinese students think American students enjoy more freedom than them at school. But American schools also have their rules. If the students break the rules, they will get punishment, too.
On the first day of a new term, 128 students of Morton High School were sent home for wearing the wrong clothes. There are altogether 1200 students in the school. Usually only 20 students break the school dress rule every day. So the headmaster Theresa Mayerik said it was the worst new term she had ever seen.
At Morton High School, students' favorite clothing such as baggy(宽大的)trousers, low-necked shirts and tanktops(紧身短背心)are not allowed in classrooms. Some students think they have the right to choose what to wear. But the headmaster doesn't think so.“I'd be supportive if half the school was sent home, because 99% will get the message that our school are for education.”“Freedom”does not mean “free of restrictions(约束)”. That is to say there is no total freedom in the world, no matter in the US or in China.

It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad as summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick_off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the things you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day, but it's a great day to make new friends, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad you did, and so will your new friends!
Seeing friends you haven't seen for a while can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(运动鞋). It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you'll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don't have time in the morning.
6.Why do some students feel sad when they return to school?
A.Because they have to meet their teachers.
B.Because they will meet new things at school.
C.Because they can no longer play as they did in the summer vacation.
D.Because they miss their friends and teachers.
7.According to the passage you usually do everything on the first day of school except________.

“A school without a newspaper is a school without a student voice.” This is the motto of the Webster Stanley Elementary WAVE:the first elementary school newspaper in Wisconsin. The WAVE is an innovative, student-based program at Webster Stanley Elementary School designed to foster real literacy opportunities for students as well as civic engagement. It centers on teaching students to research, to write, to edit, and to produce photographs and other art works into a professionally printed newspaper. Although the students work with two advisors, the students themselves produce and edit the newspaper.
The WAVE began in the fall of 2005. The newspaper name was selected by an all school vote. The masthead(报头) was designed by Derrick Reese, one of the two cartoonists on the staff. The staff of 24 is comprised mainly of fourth and fifth graders who must apply with a written application form that includes samples of their work. The process is highly competitive with over 70 applications the first year. Webster Stanley students work with mentors(导师) at the Northwestern and use their computers and presses to produce a four-page newspaper, four times a school year. In addition, the Gannett Foundation has contributed $1,000 for each year to help defray costs for the WAVE. It costs approximately $ 500 per issue to print with a run of 1,000 copies. In the fall of 2005, Jonathan Gibson, a fourth grader, assumed a new position as business manager. His job is to raise money to support the WAVE. Through his efforts, mainly by presentations and business letters, Gibson has raised approximately $ 1,500 for the paper.

Are you scared about moving up to senior high school? It can be a new experience, but you shouldn't worry. We've put together a guide on how to survive the first week.
You're not alone
Remember everybody_else_in_your_year_is_in_the_same_boat. They may not realize it, but they're just as nervous as you are. Moving to senior high is an opportunity, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.
Teachers are ready to help!
If you're unsure what to do or are worried about anything then you had better ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they're experienced in helping new students. Some senior high schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.
All change
There are lots of differences between junior high school and senior high school. You'll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.
Other points
If you've got an older brother or sister at the school then ask them for advice.
Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally.
Having early nights makes a difference and you'll find it easier to get up in the morning!

A couple from Miami, Bill and Simone Butler, spent sixty-six days in a life-raft(救生艇) in the seas of Central America after their boat sank.
Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales(鲸鱼). “They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water.
For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water—two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw(生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish until something very strange happened. Some sharks(鲨鱼) came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface. I caught them with my hands.”
About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea their life-raft was beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up.
Ⅰ.1.scene 2.Anyhow 3.act 4.frightened
5.tolerate 6.fault 7.upset 8.deserves 9.defend 10.behavior
Though he was surprised to see us,...。
can't wait to do sth.
What (a/an)+adj.+n.+主语+谓语! How dangerous a scene was!
be hard on是固定短语,意为“对……严厉,对……苛刻”;mean当“打算”讲时,应接不定式作宾语,故选B。
8.A 本题考查动词短语辨析。句意为“我们转败为胜了”。turn...into...
“让某人做某事”表示为have sb.do sth.,故答案为C。
He thought the writers were respected and could get a lot of money. He wrote a lot of stories and posted them to the editorial departments but didn't receive any answers.
He wrote a lot of stories and posted them to the editorial departments but didn't receive any answers.
根据第4段最后一句...he asked his daughter if the article had been chosen to post the editorial department.
I described just my father,但根据老师的要求他应该描写他自己。
在第二自然段的第1句就告诉我们they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales 说他们是在Simony 旅游时遇见了Whales.
They started to hit the side of the boat,也就是说the whales broke the side of the boat。
8.D 在他们的船沉没之后,the couple是一直待在船上直至获救,而不是一直都在jumped into the life-raft。
They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water—two things which saved their lives.可知:a fishing-line和a machine救了他们的命。
After fifty days at sea...
