第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题; 每小题2分, 满分40分)
A
In 1990, 22-year-old Christopher McCandless gave up his career plans, left behind everyone he knew, donated all his savings to charity, and went off on an adventure, hiking his way through America to Alaska.
Of course, this is an unusual story. Most college graduates would not do so. However, studies show that in teenage years, people are more likely to try out new experiences. For example, instead of working his way up the same organisation like his grandfather did, a 15-year-old teenager may dream about becoming a traveller—only to find in his early 20s that this attraction of new places is fading and change is less attractive.
The reason why people become less keen to change as they get older may be that people generally have similar life patterns and demands. Most people aim to find a job and a partner. As they get older, they may have young children and elderly family members to look after. These responsibilities cannot be achieved without some degree of steadiness, which means that new experiences and ideas may not have a place in the person’s life. New experiences may bring excitement as well as insecurity, so most people prefer to stay with the familiar.
However, not every individual is the same. A child may want to play a different game every day and get fed up if nothing changes at the kindergarten. Another may play with the same children and toys on every visit. Young children who avoid new experiences will grow up to be more traditional than others. Psychologists(心理学家)argue that those who have more open personalities as children are more open than others might be when they are older and that young men have a greater interest in novelty than women, although as they age, this desire for new experiences fades more quickly than it does in women.

Although 80% of the public have stated their opposition to cloning pet animals such as cats and dogs, companies still try to make a business out of selling cloned pets. These pet cloning companies make use of the grief of people who have lost their beloved pets, leading them to believe that their pets can be “brought back to life” or “copied” through new cloning technology.
However, there is no assurance that a cloned animal will be the same as the original physically, let alone in terms of behaviour or personality. In addition, more than 96 percent of cloning attempts fail, and according to the CEO of one pet cloning company, 15~45 percent of cloned cats will die within 30 days. The Roslin Institute, which produced the first cloned animal, posted a statement on its website stating, “. . . the supposed benefit of cloning a pet is an illusion(假象)but the harm to the other animals involved would be real. . . ”
Behind each cute picture of a cloned cat or dog lie hundreds of animals that were kept in laboratory cages, receiving bad treatment during various experiments. For all that, you end up with a cloned animal that may experience serious health problems. Also, while pet cloning companies are charging customers up to $150, 000 for a cloned pet, millions of homeless animals of the same species are available in animal shelters for around $100. Unfortunately, most of these animals are killed for no one brings them home.
With our No Pet Cloning movement, we seek to protect both animals and people from harm. We worked hard until the only US companies that sold cloned animals closed their doors. Currently, cat and dog cloning experiments for pet sales are only being conducted in South Korea.

The United Nations Environment Programme is calling for urgent action to reduce growing risks from chemicals. Better management of chemicals could save millions of lives and billions of dollars. As estimated, 143, 000 chemicals are now produced. Yet the report says only a small number of these chemicals have been studied for their effects on human health and the environment. It says death and disability rates are high from the unsafe use of chemical products.
Sylvie Lemmet, director of the United Nations Environment Programme, says poor management of chemicals has a high economic cost. For example, she says the cost is higher than the amount of overseas development aid, or ODA, for health care in sub-Saharan Africa.
She says, “Look at the estimated cost of poisoning from pesticide in sub-Saharan Africa, only the injury and the loss of working time is estimated to be 6. 3 billion US dollars in 2009. This is higher than the total ODA that is going to the health sector in the same area. ”
The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that chemical sales worldwide will increase by around three percent a year until 2050. Chemical production is moving quickly from developed to developing countries. By 2020, chemical production is expected to increase by 40 percent in Africa and the Middle East and 33 percent in Latin America. One of its biggest concerns is pollution of rivers and lakes by pesticides and fertilizer. Other major concerns are heavy metal pollution from the production of cement and textiles, and dioxin pollution from mining.
The UN report urges the chemical industry and governments to work together to develop safety policies. It says preventing harm costs less than fixing it.

We all have fears. Some of them are reasonable enough, such as the fear of losing one’s job or having a disease during an outbreak. Other fears, however, are not reasonable, such as the fear of snakes, or enclosed spaces. Doctors call the latter claustrophobia(幽闭恐惧症).
Phobia, from the Greek word for “fear”, is the term health experts use to describe these unreasonable mental states of anxiety. People who have claustrophobia feel anxious or nervous when they are in elevators, cars, or even large rooms. Their response, in severe cases, is to panic. They may end up shaking, sweating, hyperventilating(呼吸急促), or even fainting. To those without this phobia, it seems unreasonable to have these kinds of reactions to enclosed spaces, but to the claustrophobic person, it is their natural reaction to a situation they consider threatening. Unfortunately, having an anxiety or panic attack confirms that person’s fear, and they begin to avoid the objects or situations which bring on their discomfort.
The good news is that all kinds of phobias can be treated. Since the fear is not sensible, those suffering phobias can be helped to overcome them. The hardest step on the road to recovery is the first. The realization that a phobia is unreasonable leads to further anxiety. Support and encouragement from family, friends, and colleagues to seek advice is of great help. Techniques for treatment include flooding, which exposes the person to the source of their anxiety in a controlled situation, and counter-conditioning, using self-relaxation methods to get through anxiety attacks. In the most severe cases, these techniques may be accomplished by medicines. People being treated can get over their fear in eight to ten weeks.
There is no good reason to live in constant fear. If you have a phobia, seek medical advice and treatment. If you know someone with a phobia, be supportive. Fear is sometimes a necessary part of the human experience, but unreasonable fear is not.
63. According to the passage, what is phobia?
A. A fear of the Greek language.
B. A fear of health professionals.
C. Unreasonable anxiety.
D. An outbreak of disease.
64. A person with claustrophobia feels anxious .
A. at the seashore
B. at the foot of a mountain

65. Which of these physical symptoms would most probably be experienced during a claustrophobia attack?
A. Slow heart rate.
B. Loss of hearing.
C. Inability to keep still.
D. A sharp pain in the legs.
66. What advice is given to those who know someone with a phobia?
A. They should expose the person to the source of anxiety.
B. They should encourage the person to seek help.
C. They should share the person’s fear.
D. They should avoid that person.

Sports, drama, and a variety of organizations keep students busy during high school. Where do they find the money to do these things? Not everyone gets it from Mommy and Daddy. Most have to work to pay for these activities. Some adults question if high school students should have jobs.
Some people worry that teens with after-school jobs will struggle to find time for homework. Actually, the responsibility of having a job helps teens prioritize(划分优先顺序)their time. Many jobs are only a couple of hour shifts(轮班)on weeknights. According to a survey, 86 percent of high school students have an after-school weekend or summer job and students who work between 10 and 20 hours per week during the school year have statistically higher grade-point averages(平均分)than those who do not work at all. Those who work in high school are more likely to work in college, and financing(负担……的经费)their college education is a top reason for undergraduates to look for employment. Instead of considering jobs a barrier, employment should be looked at as real-world education.
Other people think that work adds too much stress, which may be somewhat true, but regardless of having a job or not, there is always going to be stress. Better to learn how to deal with busy schedules in a controlled environment like high school than to be out on your own and alone, experiencing stress for the first time. I personally would be more concerned for the teenager who has to become independent without having any familiarity with working.
The biggest reason teens should be allowed to work is that it is a healthy way of earning money. My dad told me, “Having a job is a good way to save up for things you are going to need or want to do. You get a lot more out of things if you are financially responsible for them. ”Kids need the freedom to choose how to spend their money. The sooner they have an income, the sooner they can learn how to use money wisely. If they are not allowed to work in high school, they may run into trouble in the future.
67. According to the survey, compared with those who don’t work teens with after-school jobs are .
A. more likely to go to college
B. usually doing better at school
C. more willing to pay for their education
D. able to find a better job after graduation
68. Who does the author worry about most?
A. Teens who have trouble in balancing their study and work.
B. Teens who will face much stress when working part-time.
C. Teens who have to learn to take responsibility for themselves.
D. Teens who have to be independent without any work experience.
69. The author’s father advised him to .
A. learn how to use money wisely
B. earn money to get what he wants
C. work hard to have a bright future
D. take part in after-school activities
70. The author’s attitude towards teens having after-school jobs is .
A. cautious B. unconcerned

【参考范文】
Hello,
I am a Senior High student. For your trouble, I take the view that parents should not force us to do things. Here, I want to share a true story with you. One of my elder brother’s classmates was forced to study abroad to live up to his parents’expectation. But in his inner heart, he just wanted to realize his dream together with his best friend in Beijing University. So he just felt left out in the foreign country and always out of place in that quite new environment. And at last his parents were cast down at what he obtained, not as well as his classmates at home.
Actually, your son can be good at a foreign language when studying at home, because it all depends on the effort he puts into it. Independence does not only mean living alone, but it also refers to the ability to think about problems and solve them by himself. As long as he values his independence, whether he studies abroad or not, he can be independent. Only when your son is happy about his studies can he study efficiently. Then, he will have a good future ahead of him.
So I suggest that you should respect your son’s choice and that you should not make him give up his dreams. Just remember: When children do what they are interested in, they will put more time and effort into it.
