A
“Around 500, 000 years ago, at the Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudianin Beijing’s suburban Fangshan district, which is about 50 km from the city of Beijing, there lived early human beings, ”says a China history textbook.
The textbook now has to be revised. New dating techniques suggest the remains of Peking Man—found in the 1920s—are over 200, 000 years older than previously thought. What’s important about that date, about 770, 000 years ago, is that this was an ice age on Earth.
Over Earth’s long history, there have been a number of times when ice and snow covered a large part of its surface. Such periods are known as ice ages.
Earth is in an ice age now. It started about 2 million years ago. Despite the many warm periods since then, scientists regard the whole time as one ice age because of the continuous existence of at least one large ice sheet—the one over Antarctica.
The new discovery was made by Chinese and US scientists. It suggests Peking Man is probably our oldest cold weather human being, said Darryl Granger, an atmospheric scientist at Purdue University whose research appears in Thursday’s edition of the journal Nature.
The average yearly temperature at the time in that part of China was around the freezing mark, but it was too dry for an ice sheet, Granger said.
This raises a question. How did Peking Man survive the cold weather?
Rick Potts, a Smithsonian Institution human origins expert who wasn’t involved in the research, raised three possibilities:
First, fire. Early findings showed signs of a fire in Peking Man’s cave. But there has been debate about whether the fire was accidental or controlled.
Second, fur. There is no evidence that Peking Man used simple tools to make more form-fitting clothes. It’s more likely he wore animal fur.
Last, he may have developed gradually to handle the cold. Peking Man may have experienced physiological changes that allowed more blood to flow to his hands and legs, Potts said. “People in general who live in colder climates tend to be shorter and wider, ”he explained.
Unlike the times of Peking Man, today the global temperature is rising due to the greenhouse effect. In the future, could humans develop to handle the warmth just as Peking Man did to fight the cold?
51. According to the new research, Peking Man actually dates back to .
A. around 500, 000 years ago
B. over 200, 000 years ago
C. about 770, 000 years ago
D. about 2 million years ago
52. What is the most important standard for scientists to decide an ice age?
A. The weather conditions.
B. The continuous existence of any large ice sheets.
C. The average yearly temperature.
D. The long period of snowfall.
53. Which of the following is TRUE of Peking Man?
A. He is the oldest human being.
B. He used fire to keep warm.
C. He wore form-fitting clothes made from fur with simple tools.
D. He might have been shorter and wider than previously thought.
54. What does the passage mainly want to convey to us?
A. The latest discovery about Peking Man.
B. The life of Peking Man during ice age.
C. The way the Peking Man use to fight against coldness.
D. The time the Peking Man date from.

As more Americans go to mainland China to take jobs, more Chinese and Americans are working side by side. These cross-cultural partnerships, while beneficial in many ways, are also highlighting tensions that expose differences in work experience, pay levels and communication.
In the last few years, a growing number of Americans in their 20s and 30s have been heading to China for employment, attracted by its faster-growing economy and lower jobless rate. Their Chinese co-workers are often around the same age. But the two groups were raised differently. The Americans have had more exposure to free-market principles. “Young Americans were brought up in a commercial environment, ”said Neng Zhao, 28, a senior associate at Blue Oak Capital, a private firm based in Beijing. “We weren’t. So the workplace is a unique learning process for my generation. ”
Managers hiring workers in China appear to be paying for Western experience. Foreigners tend to earn 10 to 15 percent more than their Chinese counterparts (persons working in similar positions), said Michael Norman, senior vice president at Sibson Consulting, an American firm. That imbalance does not go unnoticed by Chinese workers. “There is definitely the belief that Americans get paid more for the same work, ”said Ting Wang, 25, an associate at Wild China, a travel company based in Beijing. On the other hand, Chinese workers have a deeper understanding of the influences, like Confucianism and Communism, which play a part in their country’s culture and economy.
It is important and necessary for Americans working in China to adjust, said Mr Norman, who works on management and work force issues for multinational companies operating in Asia.
“In the West, there is such a bonus on getting things done quickly, but when you come to work in China, you need to work on listening and being more patient and understanding of local ways of doing business, ”he said.
55. More Americans go to China to take jobs because .
A. they want to experience different cultures
B. Chinese workers are easier to cooperate
C. they can’t find proper jobs in America
D. the economy of China is developing rapidly
56. What is mainly talked about in the passage?
A. Cross-cultural conflicts.
B. Cross-cultural partnerships.
C. Multi-national companies in China.
D. Different pays for the same work.
57. What does the underlined word “imbalance” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Unfair pay levels.
B. Different working experience.
C. Unequal opportunities.
D. Different upbringing environment.
58. We can infer from the last paragraph that .
A. Americans working in China adjust very well
B. ways of doing business in different countries differ
C. doing business in China takes money and patience
D. international companies need to understand each other[来源:21世纪教育网]

(2013·莱芜高二检测)
Neddine Parker is up by 7 in the morning. After her morning exercises and some housework, she drives to the local hospital, where she volunteers once a week. What makes Parker’s routine so extraordinary is that she is 104 years old.
“I don’t know why I’m still here, ”she said.
Dr Thomas Perls of the Boston University Medical Center is trying to figure that out. As the director of the New England Centenarian(百岁老人)Study, he studies there “super humans”, those age 100 years and older.
“It’s like winning the lottery”, he said. “You’ve got to choose the right numbers and the right combination. ”
Researchers believe about 30 percent of aging is genetic. For those who get to extremely old ages, family history may play an even more important role.
Reuben Landau’s mother lived to 100, and three of his brothers and sisters into their 90s. Landau is nearly 102, and he still practices law a few hours every day. Both Landau and Parker are remarkably healthy. They take few medications and have no major illness.
Perls has found that many centenarians lack a type of gene—E4—that is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. One study found the gene is in 29 percent of young men, but only 15 percent of centenarians. Perls also believes they may have a “protective gene”, one that helps them survive what might kill others. Parker, for example, smoked until she was 100 and had a stroke at 89.
However, living into your 100s isn’t just genetics. Aging successfully has much to do with environment and behavior. Landau watches what he eats and exercises his body and mind every day. He’s convinced it’s why he’s still in good health. “People still have to do the right things to get to very old age, ”said Perls. So it’s not just the cards you’re dealt, but how you play the hand.
59. According to the first two paragraphs, what Parker doesn’t know in fact means .
A. why researchers are studying her
B. why she still can manage her routine
C. why she volunteers once a week in the hospital
D. why she is still living at the age of 104
60. By saying “It’s like winning the lottery”, Dr Thomas Perls means .
A. it is quite unusual to be a centenarian
B. it is very difficult to find “super humans”
C. it is a tough job investigating the aging process
D. it takes a long time to win a lottery
61. Why are Landau and Parker remarkably healthy according to the research?
A. Because they are remarkably active in mind. [来源:21世纪教育网]
B. Because they lack a gene linked to illness.
C. Because they are fond of social work.
D. Because they enjoy sports and housework.
62. It can be inferred from the passage that .
A. smoking may increase the risk of heart disease and other fatal diseases
B. gene E4 may reduce the risk of heart disease and other fatal diseases
C. environment and living habits are as important as genes
D. genes are not associated with some types of fatal diseases

(2013·烟台高二检测)
Rae and Bruce Hostetler not only work very hard, they also relax just as well. Numerous vacations help the couple to maintain their health and emotional well-being—and it’s no surprise to health care professionals.
“Rest, relaxation, and stress reduction are very important for people’s well-being and health. This can be accomplished through daily activities, such as exercise and meditation, but vacation is an important part of this as well, ”said primary care physician Natasha Withers from one Medical Group in New York. Withers lists a decrease risk of heart disease and improve reaction time as some of the benefits from taking some time off. “We also know that the mind is very powerful and can help with healing, so a rested, relaxed mind is able to help the body heal better, ”said Withers.
Psychologists confirm the value of vacations for the mind. “The impact that taking a vacation has on one’s mental health is great, ”said Francine Lederer, a clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who specializes in stress and relationship management. “Most people have better life perspective and are more motivated to achieve their goals after a vacation, even if it is a 24-hour time-out. ”The trips could be good for their health, good for their family and good for their businesses.
The online travel agency Expedia conducted a survey about vacation time in 2010, and according to their data the average American earned 18 vacation days—but only used 14 of them. France topped the list, with the average worker earning 37 vacation days and using all but two of them. Americans’ responses may not be surprising in a culture where long hours on the job often are valued, but that’s not always good for the individual, the family or the employer.
Psychologists have also found that people who don’t take enough time to relax may find it harder to relax in the future. “Without time and opportunity to do this, the nerve connections that produce feelings of calm and peacefulness become weaker, making it actually more difficult to shift into less-stressed states, ” Mulhern said.
63. How did the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By making comparisons.
B. By giving an example.
C. By raising questions.
D. By providing data.
64. According to Natasha Withers, vacations can .
A. weaken reaction system
B. cure serious diseases
C. reduce the level of well-being
D. decrease the risk of heart disease
65. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. One should never wait to relax.
B. Work and rest go against each other.
C. Time and opportunity wait for no man.
D. A relaxed mind determines everything.
66. What is mainly talked about in the text?
A. Ways to relax in one’s free time.
B. The benefits of taking time off.
C. Different opinions on holidays.
D. The Hostetlers always on the go.

(原创)Two students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)have managed to develop a banana piano. Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum were looking for a way of turning everyday objects into keyboards. They have developed a piece of equipment called MakeyMakey that can turn fruit, animals and even humans into keyboards. Mr Rosenbaum told the BBC the idea behind the equipment was to enable people to “see the world around them as a collection of kits(配套元件). ”
When asked about safety concerns, Mr Rosenbaum said the amount of electric current used in the equipment was very small and harmless to the human bodies or animals. He said fuses(保险丝)had been included into the board as well as the USB port to ensure safety.
Mr Silver said many things in our daily life can be used in their experiment. Even his cat became part of the experiment. According to Mr Rosenbaum they have managed to turn two of his friends into sound machines, a beach-ball into a game controller and have used a cup of milk to make music.
Around 150 pieces of equipment have been made available to test-users and AnnMarie Thomas, lived in Minneapolis, was among the first to try it. She says even her four-year-old daughter has managed to use the equipment without any help. “My kids love it. My daughter was able to plug it in and set it up. She has tried many other toys and has even managed to turn herself into the keyboard. ”
Ms Thomas, a former professor of engineering, trains future engineering teachers and thinks the equipment has a lot of potential for use in schools. “It is a great way to engage kids with science and technology, ”she said. “It helped my daughter understand how science and technology may change the world. ”

Text 10
Good morning, everyone. ?Today I’d like to give a lecture on cycling tours. Well, for anyone who is considering going on a tour, ?the first and the most important thing to consider is safety. So it’s very important indeed to consider what you wear. Wear something that can easily be seen, red jackets, for example. You know many accidents happen because drivers simply fail to see the cyclists.
Second, don’t try to ride too far, too quickly. Take your time, and if you feel tired, stop and rest. Remember the joy of cycling tours is not the riding itself. Get close to nature and see things you wouldn’t normally see if you were traveling by car or bus.
And if you’re planning your journey in the summer, take plenty of water. You are advised to drink at least one liter of water every hour. ?If the weather is not very warm, make sure you take some warm clothes. And put them on when you stop riding. Even in cold weather you can become very warm when you are riding and then it is very easy to catch a cold or even get a fever when you stop.

Helping others is considered a treasured virtue of humankind, which definitely brings us tremendous happiness. Whoever lives in the world depends on others’ help, which is necessary and important.
I’ve received a lot of help from other people, which enables me to overcome the difficulties and troubles in my way. I once failed an important exam, as a result of which I almost lost heart. It was the encouragement and comfort of my classmates that cheered me up. Not until then did I realize what help really meant. From then on, I began to do what I can to help others in need, which benefited me as well as others.
As the saying goes “Roses given, fragrance in hand. ”We should always be ready to give others a hand in return for their help. Only in this way can we truly live in a world of love.
