(2022·新高考Ⅰ卷)It was the day of the big cross-country run.Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old.His usual big toothy smile was absent today.I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened.“I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably.“I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration (懊恼).I knew the coach meant well — he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid.He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team.It just took him longer — that's all.David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
2.故事双线:明线:take part in the big cross-country run 暗线:love and respect the disabled
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. He hung his head, trying to avoid eye contact with me. Having thought it over, I mentioned some events which won people's praise for his determination and perseverance. Then I quietly said,“David, if you don't want to run today, no one is going to make you do. But if you're not running because you're afraid of being laughed at, that's not a good enough reason. The real question is whether you are going to let those few people stop you from doing something you really want to do.” Then he looked at the field and slowly rose to his feet.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. David stood firmly in his position, ignoring anything around. But he had only gone a few metres before he tripped and fell flat on the ground. My heart sank. Luckily, the spectators burst into thunderous cheers and applause. Inspired by the enthusiasm and encouragement, David quickened his pace in high spirits. It turned out that he crossed the finish line eventually. Seeing his confident smiles, I sighed in relief. With the power to conquer himself, he can conquer anything on the way to a promising future.

It was one of those days when nothing seemed to go right.I dragged myself out of the bed and all of the routines began early.I dropped my two older children at school with relief and unwillingly headed to the supermarket to buy groceries with my youngest.I wasn't feeling any sense of appreciation for my comfortable home or lovely family.
I was getting mad this early day, and my son, just four years old at that time, was difficult.I raced around to pick the items without regard to cost, while trying to control my naughty child whose behavior had added to my complete displeasure.Yes, I was that mother, threatening, and roaring at a small child.
We eventually made it to the checkout and stood in the queue waiting for our turn. After a short time, I noticed that someone had joined the line behind us.I turned and saw an old man.He wore a dirty overcoat. His shoes were worn out, and his trousers tapped around sockless ankles on this cold, wet day.In his hands he just carried a small box of long-life milk.
I had too many groceries.I asked him if he'd like to go ahead of me.It wasn't an act of kindness on my part, also not my automatic reaction.Perhaps I just did so out of a sense of guilt, or I just wanted him to go.After all, his presence made me uncomfortable. In the same way, I felt uncomfortable and avoided eye contact when passing a homeless person.
He didn't respond to me as if I had said nothing to him.I looked at him and repeated my words. This time, I was sure that he had heard what I said.

He looked surprised and uncertain.
I had to find him and give back the change.
He looked surprised and uncertain. He asked me quietly,“Madam, I possibly couldn't do it.Are you sure?”“Sure!” I confirmed, nodding at him unwillingly. He went ahead slowly, paid for the milk, and took his change. Then, to my amazement, he turned to my child and pressed the change into his hand.Without any more words, he turned around and disappeared into the crowds.Seeing this, a sense of guilt flooded into my mind.I looked around anxiously, hoping that he hadn't walked away.
I had to find him and give back the change.Out of the supermarket, an old man with a dirty overcoat and sockless ankles caught my attention.I ran to him quickly, pressing back the change into his hand with a big bag of bread for his kindness.I hurried away before he expressed his thanks. At this moment, my guilt gave way to the relief. Also, I felt comfortable about my home, family and even my life, rather than being mad.A gentle breeze softly kissed me.I went home with my lovely child happily as well as gratefully.

It was eight o'clock on a May morning, and Micah, my 17-year-old daughter, was in our bonus room upstairs. It had been her temporary eleventh-grade classroom ever since schools had moved to remote learning due to the pandemic.
From the kitchen, I listened for the sound of her tapping on her laptop.I resisted the urge to check on her.Frequently Micah was texting friends and commenting on their posts about the fun they were having together. We'd barely left the house for 10 weeks straight.
“Mom, everyone is hanging out today!” Micah's voice came from upstairs.“Why can't I?”
I went up the stairs.Micah was lying on the floor wearing pajamas (睡衣), with her laptop, school iPad and cellphone in front of her.“It's not fair,” she said.“I have no one I can be with.I can't wait until I'm 18 when I can do what I want.”
We'd had this conversation before.Still, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her.I was sick of having to stay at home, too.Even though Micah and I were at home together more than we had been in years, we might have been living in separate worlds.“Wanna watch TV later?” I asked.“No, thanks.” Micah shook her head.
“In a few weeks you'll be going to sports camp,” I added.“That's something you can look forward to.” I closed the door.I was used to Micah's rejection, but it still hurt.Teenage independence is healthy, but I worried if I couldn't find a way to bond with my girl soon, I might never be close to her again. She'd be 18 in the fall and had already convinced herself she didn't need me anymore.Maybe she was right. No matter what I did, I couldn't seem to reach her.

That evening, I was surfing the Internet and saw a friend's children playing with their new cat.

That evening, I was surfing the Internet and saw a friend's children playing with their new cat. An idea hit me.“Why not get her a pet?” I thought to myself.Acting on a sudden inspiration, I logged in a pet shelter website and went straight to Micah's room.“Sweetie, I've gotten a surprise for you.” I showed her the pictures of those cats that she could adopt. With her mouth wide opening, she simply couldn't take her eyes off those cute creatures. Finally, she pointed to a baby cat with yellow spots on the head.
“This is the one I want,” she said, smiling. We paid online and the next day the little cat was delivered to our house.Micah gently scooped it up into her arms and buried her face in the soft fur and then Micah smiled at me with a tender look, “Thank you, mom.” A huge wave of warmth flooded all over my body and it seemed like the wall between us was torn down.My silence drew her attention and she looked at me again, throwing herself in my arms, and said,“I love you, Mom.”
