Ⅲ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
As a parent you might never guess all the ways a good imagination benefits your child. It helps a pre-schooler (学龄前儿童).
Develop social skills
As children play pretend, they explore relationships between family members, friends and co-workers and learn more about how people interact. Playing doctor, they imagine how physicians care for their patients. Playing house, they learn more about how parents feel about their children. Imaginative play helps develop empathy (同情) for others. If children can imagine how it feels to be left out of a game or to lose a pet, they are better able to help those in need. They become more willing to play fair, to share, and to cooperate.
Build self-confidence
Young children have very little control over their lives. Imagining oneself as a builder of skyscrapers (摩天大楼) or a superhero defending the planet is empowering to a child. It helps them develop confidence in their abilities and their potential.
Boost intellectual growth
Using the imagination is the beginning of abstract thought. Children who can see a king's castle in a mound (堆) of sand or a delicious dinner in a mud pie are learning to think symbolically (象征性地). This skill is important in school where a child will have to learn that numerals symbolize groups of objects, letters symbolize sounds, and so on.
Practice language skills
Kids who play pretend with their friends do a lot of talking. This helps boost their vocabulary, improve sentence structure and promote communication skills.
Work out fears
Playing pretend can help children work out their fears and worries. When children role-play about the big,bad monster under the bed, they gain a sense of control over him and he doesn't seem quite so big or so bad.Imaginative play also helps kids vent (发泄) confusing feelings they might have, such as anger toward a parent or compete with a new sibling (兄弟姐妹).
To encourage your youngster's imagination, read to him every day. Books offer children the opportunity to visit other worlds and create new ones of their own.
For generations children have enjoyed reading the story of Peter Pan because Peter takes them on fascinating adventures.Reader's Digest Young Families offers a beautiful typical Disney edition of Peter Pan, which is an iParenting Media Awards winner. Click here to find out how you can get this classic story
along with 2 free books—Bambi and Pinocchio.
36.What's NOT the advantage of children having a good imagination?

D.Helping them form a good habit of reading story.

Employees are being flooded with too much information that has little to do with their work, according to a new survey.
On average, white-collar workers spend 51 percent of their work time receiving and processing information.Only one third of it was relevant to their work, the survey found. Information overload for white-collar workers has become a global issue. The huge amount of information has already affected their efficiency in management as well as their performance at work.
Buried with e-mails
Every morning, a secretary at the human resources department of an auto parts company opens her e-mail box, only to find it crammed with at least 50 unread mails. For her, even scanning through these e-mails every day takes at least half an hour. Some of her colleagues are not so lucky—they have to read at least 100.
Bothered with calls
Telephone calls are also causing a problem. More than 40 percent white-collar workers choose mobile phones as the preferred way to communicate important and urgent business matters. Talking saves time and energy over the clicking, reading and replying to
e-mails, but phone calls are also more distracting (分心的). While answering a call, a clerk is likely to put
away a much more important task at hand and start the business being talked about on the phone.
Solution? Not yet
Many companies start with providing staff with better computers, better Internet access and more advanced gadgets(小装置). For example, staff members above a certain level in one company will be provided with a blackberry phone for easier access to their e-mails. The company has also organized many lectures on efficient ways of e-mail management. Yet most white-collar workers think their companies can do more.
40.What does the new survey find about white-collar workers?
A.They spend 51 percent of their work time on meetings.
B.Only half of the information they receive is useful.
C.Over 60 percent of them prefer to use the telephone.

A.They start to give staff a pay rise.
B.They plan to employ more people.
C.They provide employees with more advanced
equipment.
D.They organize lectures on how to reduce stress.
43.What is the major issue discussed in this text?
A.Poor management leads to inefficiency at work.

overload.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver,I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas.I stopped at a gas station (加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款台),I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took_off,but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car.I stopped and wondered what I should do.A car pulled up behind me.It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's.We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car,the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me.Soon afterward,I received a Christmas present from them.Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later,I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day,and the battery (电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door.I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?”I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it.They would accept no payment;so when I got home I wrote them a note to say thanks,I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you,and it meant a lot,he said.
“Thank you”—two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

Winning the lottery (彩票) is not the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for many past winners. Sad stories do exist in large numbers for the past lottery winners and that's why some financial experts say “70 percent of lottery winners will squander away (乱花) winning within a few years.” Some end up losing all within two years, family relationships destroyed or
even worse. Wayne Schenk was an old soldier diagnosed with lung cancer. When he won a million dollars in a lottery he thought his troubles were over and he would get the advanced medical treatment that might save his life. But lottery officials refused to pay him the total sum in a single payment and they said they could not make an exception to the regulations. When Schenk died in 2007, he'd only received one payment of $ 34,000.
Another lottery winner, Billy Bob Harrell, Jr. killed himself two years after winning 31 million dollars in the Texas lottery in 1997. He'd spent large amounts of money and given large amounts away, but he didn't find that expected peace that should have come with the freedom of money.
Other lottery winners have ended up in prison for crimes. Many suffer bankruptcy (破产) after the big jackpot (头奖) is spent and given away, including some of the eight people who won the 365 million Powerball in 2006.
The examples given paint a sad picture of what can happen if you win a big lottery jackpot, but fortunately, these examples don't tell the stories of all jackpot winners.
47.What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.Most lottery winners use up the money quickly.
B.Most lottery winners don't really end up well.
C.Winning lottery means relationships destroyed.
D.Financial experts are against the lottery industry.
48.Why did lottery officials refuse to give Wayne Schenk the million dollars in one payment?
A.He was diagnosed with lung cancer.
B.He was unwilling to give away his money.
C.They had to observe the official rules.
D.They didn't want to disturb his peace.
49.The author supports his main idea by________.
A.giving examples B.making comparisons
C.listing numbers D.stating reasons
50.In the following paragraph, the author will probably talk about________.
A.advice given by financial experts
B.happy stories of the lottery winners
C.conclusion drawn by the author
D.regulations about lottery winning

Is_a_Training_Class_or_Family_Teacher_Necessary?
More_and_more_middle_school_students_are_going_to_all_kinds_of_training_classes_or_having_family_teachers_at_the_weekend.There_are_two_different_viewpoints_about_it.
Some think it necessary.Firstly,it's more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves.Secondly,it can strengthen what is learnt in class.Besides, they can learn a lot more.Others think it unnecessary. For one thing, students can easily form the habit of dependence. For another, students need time to relax from time to time. What's more, the purpose of many training classes and teachers is to make money.
In my opinion, whether a training class or family teacher is needed just depends. If you are really very weak at or interested in a certain subject, maybe it's OK for you.But be sure to choose a good and suitable class or teacher, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money.

Extra-curricula (课外课程) in high school are a great benefit to students,so it is important to find time for at least one. They're a great way to have fun, make new friends, learn about yourself, and open the door to possible future careers. However, sometimes it can be hard to make decisions about extra-curricula.Keep these suggestions in mind.
Part of the fun of clubs, activities, and sports is the thing itself. If you love to write, then working on the school newspaper or magazine will give you a chance to express yourself and develop your skills.Do something because you simply enjoy it.
Maybe your mom was a cheerleader and has always dreamt of her little girl on the squad (班,小队),or your dad wants you to be part of the newspaper staff because he's a reporter himself. If this is happening to you and you're not sure whether you really want to do it,have a try and give it up if you really don't like it.
Just as important are the friends you'll make by taking part in these activities. It can be hard to make friends in your regular classes or the lunchroom, but taking part in a club or team is a great way to meet kids who have the same interests.By spending time together and working for the same goal, you'll have the chance to form lasting friendships.
However, try to avoid joining an activity simply because your friends are doing it.This might get you stuck in something you're not that into,or keep you from exploring new hobbies and sports.

Reply from the Highlights Editors
Your classmates are probably just excited about your trip. Most likely they don't expect you to buy gifts for everyone.Sending a few postcards to the entire class during your trip would be a wonderful way to share your experiences. The pictures on the cards and your words of description will be the best gift of all.
Dog Begging
My dog always begs for food at the dinner table. I really want to feed him, but my mom says I can't. I'm afraid he won't like me anymore. What should I do?
Reply from the Highlights Editors
Your dog loves you for many more reasons than just for what you feed him. You can show him that you care
about him by playing with him, by petting him and speaking kindly to him, and by making sure he has fresh water. It might be best if your dog is not near the dinner table while you are eating. You could teach him to stay in another room.
Being Bilingual (会说双语的)

It is a great gift to have someone in your family who is willing to take the time to teach you another language. It's good way to keep family traditions alive, and it helps to develop your language skills. Your ability to use both English and Tagalog will help you learn a third and fourth language later in life. So it sounds like a great idea !

Ⅲ.阅读理解
A
Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and get answers. In the light of these he put further questions, and so on.
For most of the time this “conversation” goes on below the level of consciousness. At times, however, we become aware of it.This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occurring between expectations and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.
Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page; others take off imaginatively from words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension that is written in the text, while the latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers.
There is another conversation that from our point of view is important, and that has not to do with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a “process” conversation as opposed to a “content” conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in reading. If we are skilled readers, our ability to hold a content conversation with a text is usually pretty well developed. Not so our ability to hold a process conversation. It is just this kind of conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.

When I was asked to speak at the Community Book Club lunch party, I thought about several topics that might be of interest to a group of readers, and I considered doing a book review or discussing the life of a well-known literary figure, but I thought I would break with tradition today in order to share some anecdotes from the life of a man, who, like you, enjoyed reading.
In spite of the fact that Thomas Alva Edison had almost no formal education, spending only three months in school, his mother taught him to read at quite an early age. Between the ages of nine and twelve, he read such difficult volumes as Homers' History of England, Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and Neon's Principia.
As a young man, Mr.Edison decided to read all of the books in the Detroit public library, systematically (系统的) shelf by shelf. After finishing the first fifteen feet, he decided to reconsider the task.
A few years later, in Cincinnati, his love for reading almost cost him his life. Having stayed at the library until very late, Mr.Edison started home with a pile of old magazines for which he had paid the large sum of two dollars. Suspecting that he might be a thief, a policeman ordered him to stop. But Mr.Edison was too deaf to hear the order. The policeman shot, and missed.
In addition to the electric light, Thomas Edison is known for inventing the photograph, microphone, mimeograph, electric storage battery, and photographic film. Whenever he was paid for an invention, he used the money for his two loves—more experiments and more books.
A friend described Edison's life in those busy days: “I went to visit Tom,” he said,“and I found him sitting behind a pile of books five feet high which he had ordered from New York, London, and Paris. He studied them night and day, eating at his desk and sleeping in his chair. In six weeks he had read all of the books and had performed more than two thousand experiments using the formulas that he had studied.”
5.The reason why the speaker chose to talk about Thomas Edison is that________.
A.he was a well-known scientist
B.he was a famous literary figure
C.he liked to read very much
D.he is one of the author's best friends
6.What did Mr.Edison do with the money that he earned from his invention?
A.He built schools for the poor children.
B.He spent it on books and doing experiments.
C.He gave the money to the public library.
D.He offered the money to his mother for further education.
7.Which one of the following is TRUE about Edison according to the passage?
A.He ever stole some magazines from the library.
B.His ear was shot by the police and went deaf.
C.He received most of his education from reading.
D.He never received any formal education at all.
8.The BEST title for this passage is“________”.
A.Thomas Edison—a great inventor
B.Thomas Edison and his inventions
C.Thomas Edison—a great reader
D.Thomas Edison and the Book Club
