Have you ever seen people dance? Some dances are fast and others are slow.People's feet always move when they dance. They keep on moving until the music stops.
People have enjoyed dancing for a very long time. This story is of a different kind of dance. It is the dance of bees.
If you have ever watched bees, you know that they are very clever. They also work hard looking for food and bringing it back to their home.
Bees live on food from flowers.Have you seen bees flying around a flower garden? When a bee rests on a flower,it tries to go to the centre of it.There it takes in as much food as its body can hold. Then it flies to take the food back to the hive. Then they fly away for more food.
How do the bees know where to find the best food in the sweetest flowers? One bee acts as a guide. When it discovers good flowers,it flies back to the hive and tells the others. It does this by dancing for them.
The bee dances on one side. This tells the other bees which way to go to find the flowers. But that is not all.The bee dances for some time. And the length of its dance tells the other bees how far they must fly to reach the flowers.
When the bees see the dance, they know where the flowers are. They fly away and return with more food for the hive.
Sometimes we hear the music of the bees as they fly around. But few people have ever seen them dance.Yet without that dance we might never have sweet honey to eat.

Everyone needs at least 8-hour sleep to recover from tiredness and the hurt caused by hard work in the daytime.

Parents are often amazed at how fast their child grows and develops. New research has determined that the ability to quantify may develop much sooner than most parents realize.
Kristy vanMarle, professor of the University of Missouri, has determined that contrary to what previous studies have shown, infants(婴儿) are able to quantify substances(物质)—like sand or water—as early as 10 months. As long as the difference between the two substances is large enough, infants will choose the larger amount, especially when it comes to food.
With the assistance of her team researchers, vanMarle tested the quantifying skills of babies by presenting them with two cups: one containing a small amount of food, and one containing a larger amount. Consistently, the babies chose the larger amount.
“Several studies throughout the last 15 years have shown that infants are very good at telling how many objects they see; however, infants don't seem to count things like water or sand,”vanMarle said.“What we're saying is that they can quantify substances; it's just much harder. The infants can see how much food goes into each cup and compare that in their memories. They decide which amount is larger, and they almost always select the larger one.”
This information further refutes(驳斥) the long-held idea that babies “know nothing of the world”,vanMarle said.
“Since psychologists have begun studying infants with sensitive measures, we've discovered a lot of early abilities. I think for parents, it should be exciting to know that there's somebody in there that has some fundamental and basic knowledge of the world, and that knowledge is guiding their development,” vanMarle said.
In the future, vanMarle says this kind of study could be linked to a child's progress in math-related skills, although programs marketed to increase those abilities, such as “Baby Einstein”, still have mixed reviews when it comes to academic study.
44.The quantifying ability refers to the ability to________.

Beginning in October more than 13,000 McDonald's restaurants in America will use a new variety of cooking oil. McDonald's aims to make its French fries and other fried foods healthier.
The change will not affect the taste or the number of calories in the food. But by changing the cooking oil, McDonald's says, it hopes to cut by nearly half the amount of trans fatty acids(反式脂肪酸)in French fries and reduce the amount of saturated fats which raise cholesterol(胆固醇)levels and increase the risk of heart disease.McDonald's new step is important because McDonald's is an industry leader and other fast-food chains and food processors may follow the lead.
For McDonald's, the action comes at a time when Americans are becoming more and more concerned about obesity(肥胖)and are increasing pressure on food companies to offer healthy and nutritious foods to consumers.
After three years of study, McDonald's officials say they are switching oil that is lower in saturated fats and trans fatty acids. McDonald's says the change will not cause higher costs for consumers.

It is in memory of his favorite wife, Arjumand Banu Bagam, known as Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631.The building, which was completed between 1632 and 1638, was designed by a local Muslim architect(建筑师) Ustad Ahmad Lahori. The whole building, with gardens and gateway structures, was completed in 1643.The Taj Mahal stands at one end of the garden tomb with marble(大理石) path. The room is softly lighted by the light that passes through double screens of carved marble set high in the walls. The building now is kept in good condition. The Taj Mahal took 22 years to build.Shah Jehan planned a similar building, but in black instead of white,to lie on the other side of the river. But before it could be built,Shah Jehan was imprisoned(监禁) by his son and buried next to his wife in the Taj Mahal.

White Sands National Monument is one of the largest sand dune fields in the United States. The bright white sand dunes are always changing, always moving, like waves on the ocean. Driven by strong winds, the sand moves and covers everything in its path. It is like a huge sea of sand.
The sand dunes have created an extreme environment. You may wonder how anything can live in this extreme environment of a white sand desert. There is not much rain. The heat in summer is intense. The sand lacks nutrients(养料).
Yet almost four-hundred kinds of animals live in White Sands National Monument. Many of them are birds or insects. There are also twenty-six kinds of reptiles, including rattlesnakes and lizards(蜥蜴). And there are more than forty kinds of mammals. They include rabbits, foxes and coyotes(山狗).
Scientists know that plants and animals often change to be able to live in extreme environments. For example, they change color to protect themselves from enemies. Many of the animals that live in the sand dunes have become white. So it is difficult to see the animals in the sand.
There is another reason why you may not be able to see the animals. Many of them remain underground during the day when it is very hot. They come out at night when it is cooler. You may be able to see their footprints.
Plants do grow in the White Sands dune field. But even plants that grow in most deserts have trouble surviving. A major reason is that the dunes bury(掩埋) any plants in their way as they move across the desert. Yet, a few plants have developed techniques to avoid being buried by moving sand.
For example, some plants grow taller and their roots grow deeper into the sand. The soaptree yucca(丝兰花) plant can make its stem grow longer to keep its leaves above the sand. The plant grows up to thirty centimeters a year.
5.Which is NOT the reason that the sand dunes of White Sands National Monument have created an extreme environment?
A.There is not much rain.
B.The heat in summer is intense.

According to experts, the word Hutong originated from Mongolian language meaning“Well”.In ancient times, people tended to gather and live around wells. So the original meaning of Hutong should be “a place where people gather and live”.
Another explanation says that during the Yuan Dynasty, about 13th century, residential(住宅的)areas in the city were divided into many divisions.Between the smaller divisions were passageways for people to travel through. And those passageways also functioned as isolation belts against fire risks. In Mongolian language, passageways of this kind were called Hutong. But no matter what Hutong exactly means, one thing is for sure, that is,Hutong first appeared in Beijing during the Yuan Dynasty.
In the early 13th century,a Mongolian tribe from the north became very strong.Led by Genghis Khan, the Mongolian occupied Beijing, the capital of the Jin Dynasty. In the year 1271,Kubla Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, founded Yuan Dynasty and set Beijing as the capital city in the following year.Unfortunately, the old city was completely destroyed during the war.So they had to rebuild it.At the time, there was a clear definition for avenue, street and Hutong. Most of today's Hutong were formed during the Ming and Qing Dynasties that followed.Nobody knows exactly how many Hutongs there are in nowadays Beijing.
Today you can find various Hutongs with different shapes, lengths or directions. The shortest one is only 40 centimeters wide, which means a person like me has to walk sideways to get through. And some Hutongs have more than 20 turns. With the growth of the population, many old Hutongs have disappeared to make way for high-rise apartments.
1.According to the text,a Hutong was NOT used as________.
A.a place for people to gather and live around
B.a passageway for people to travel through
C.an isolation belt to prevent fire
D.a place for people to get water

A.During the Jin Dynasty.
B.During the Yuan Dynasty.
C.During the Ming Dynasty.
D.During the Qing Dynasty.

A.Genghis Khan set Beijing as the capital of the Yuan Dynasty.
B.Most of the Hutongs that can be seen now were built only during the Ming Dynasty.
C.Hutongs differ in shapes, lengths and directions.
D.Hutongs will be forever kept although there are many high-rise apartments.

Michael Greenberg is a very popular New Yorker. learn from向……学习;cheer for为……
2.D 根据后文第五段第二句中的many poor New Yorkers know him...
He looks like any other businessman(他与其他商人看上去一样)以及空前的But(表转折)可知,此处应填different(不一样的)。
5.A 联系后面的定语从句who look at the sidewalk and __6__ the street可知,look at及6空都是路人的动作,所以选act。
keep off远离……;cross over穿过(道路等)。
其他三个选项的意思是:hold up举起;阻碍;hang out闲逛;turn around转身。
11.C 联系前文我们知道Mr.Greenberg发放手套给穷人,所以此处为give away(赠送,发放)。其他三个选项的意思是:search for寻找;store up贮存;put on穿上,均与语境不符。
be sorry for为……遗憾;be satisfied with对……感到满意;be proud of以……
18.B 根据后面的Michael's father always helped the poor...
与make a big difference相对,选small。

City residents often say the constant noise, traffic and crowds of the city would drive them mad. Well, they might be right, according to the latest research.
City residents are more likely to develop mental illnesses such as schizophrenia(精神分裂症) than those who live in rural areas, a study has found.
Researchers from Cardiff University examined the lifestyles of more than 200,000 people in Sweden and found that those who lived in urban areas were more at risk from psychosis(精神病) than people who lived in villages.
The experts don't know exactly why this is but they suggest that town and city residents are more likely to be rejected by those around them. They will experience discrimination(歧视) if they do not fit in, which can lead to them feeling anxious and even developing mental illnesses.
Dr Stanley Zammit, who led the research published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, said,“Urban areas have a higher influence of schizophrenia than rural areas.”
He also added that people living in towns and cities were more likely to develop other mental illnesses that result in personality changes—a condition known as non-affective psychosis. It is not the first time researches have shown that country life is healthier.
Earlier this year an official report found that village residents lived an average of two years longer than those living in towns and cities. According to figures from the Office of National Statistics, men who live in the country are likely to live to between 78 and 79 years, while those in towns can expect to live to an age of 76. Women on average live to their 81st birthday in towns, but live to between 82 and 83 in the country.
