Marco decided to join them for their next trip.It took them more than three years to travel the 9,000 miles to Shangtu, capital of the Mongol Empire. The great Khan gave them a warm welcome and they stayed in his huge marble palace.Soon young Marco became a great favourite of the Emperor and was one of his most trusted friends.Marco quickly learned the Chinese language and customs because he travelled around and talked to many people. Before he reached the age of thirty he was made Governor of Yangchow Province. The rest of his time was spent either at the emperial court or on long tours of the outlying regions, gathering information for the Emperor.
After nearly seventeen years in the East,Marco and his father prepared to return home. The first part of their journey was by sea, then they continued by land from the Persian Gulf. When they finally arrived back in Venice their family and friends were surprised to see them again. They had been away for almost 25 years and everybody thought that they must have died a long time before.

Children who spend more time reading with their parents have a greater chance of becoming better readers than those who don't.With the help from their parents, children can learn techniques to improve their reading skills.
“A lot of parents think after their child learns to read, they should stop reading to them,”Donna George said.“They are sadly mistaken.”
George offers her services to parents at the Title I Learning Centers. She said reading aloud to children may be the most valuable thing parents can do.“It is better for children to hear things at a higher level than where they are,”George said.“Parents are their child's first teacher.”Parents help their children build listening, phonics(语音), comprehension and vocabulary skills when they read aloud to them.
Before parents can identify reading problems, they should escape the enemy-television and limit the time their children spend watching television.George suggested not allowing kids to have a TV in their bedrooms, setting a schedule of when kids can watch or keeping a list of how many programs children watch.Louise Joines said while her 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son enjoy reading, the television sometimes becomes a distraction. So she tries to build the situation by suggesting books the entire family will enjoy reading together, like the Harry Potter series.
Parents who do not read themselves should not count on their children being enthusiastic about it.If parents would read to their children at least 15 minutes every day, children would not have so many problems in school. It is the parents' job to help build that desire in their children, and of course to know what kind of books to read is also important.

There are lots of sights to see on the Big Island of Hawaii. The island is filled with lush foliage (叶子),tropical wildlife, and natural views. There are things such as volcanoes, pineapple farms.
Visitors get to see things that many tourists never even know exist.Visitors are kept safe and secure by using an experienced guide company.Sightseeing can be completed by many means of transportation. There is something for everyone;they just have to decide the time they have and the amount of energy they wish to expend(花费).

What the tourist gets to see and do is directly affected by the choice they make in moving about the Hawaiian Islands.Helicopters can show the entire Big Island in one trip, but the tourist does not get to see anything up close and personal.Seeing the island by air, offers a view that is unequaled(无可比拟的)by any other method.
An eco-tour is more than the thing for people who wish to get up close and personal with the land and nature in the Big Island.Hiking, biking, kayaking, and more are the order of the day. However, these tours offer unbelievable experiences.Participants get to interact with nature.

Outdoor Survival Provides Adventure Worldwide
Although there are no state controlled survival courses in Britain or the United States, there are various independent organizations offering similar activities.
Students can take part in outdoor training courses through university clubs and societies.Anyone can register(登记,注册)with such groups, which then organize courses, training and trips for all members.
One of the most popular outdoor training programmes in both the US and Britain,is Outward Bound(户外训练).It was founded in 1941 in Wales and attracts hundreds of thousands of adventurous types every year.
The courses are intended to broaden minds through experiences that build confidence,self-esteem(自尊)and character. As well as specialist courses such as canoeing, leadership skills and sailing, participants can take part in week long adventure training camps which include a host of sports and survival training education skills.
Michael Williams,an American student, took part in an Outward Bound course last year.He said:“We learned lots of first aid skills, lots of natural history, lots of environmental facts, and took part in a wildlife preservation programme.Beyond that,my favourite skills learned were sailing and rock climbing.”
Courses can last up to 40 days and are open to anyone over the age of 14.Students must be in general good health, but do not need to be experienced in outdoor sports. There is no selection process;everyone is welcome, although new participants are advised to pick a course matching their physical capacity(体力).
Most of the British courses take place in the Brecon Beacons in Wales.Another similar organization is the UK Survival School, which includes courses on learning to live with the environment, sailing and winter survival. On a basic survival weekend students will learn how to get water and food, how to make fire and cook with it,to find and build a shelter, control survival life support, how to cross rivers, send off a distress signal, and to use compasses by day and night.
According to the leaders, such adventures are“an awakening,an exploration into the unknown”.Outward Bound believes that participants will“use mind and body traveling some of the Earth's roughest wilderness areas.”

Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us deal with culture shock, is the way our brain and our personality reacts to the strange new things we meet with when we move from one culture to another.
Culture shock begins with the “honeymoon stage”.This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from “jet lag” but we are thrilled to be in the new environment. You see new sights, hear new sounds and language and eat new kinds of food. This honeymoon stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are involved in some kind of great adventure.
Unfortunately, the second stage of culture shock can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life,we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family. This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival rejecting or pulling away from the new culture. This “rejection stage”can be quite dangerous because the visitor may develop unhealthy habits. This stage is considered a crisis in the process of cultural adjustment and many people choose to go back to their homeland or spend all their time with people from their own culture speaking their native language.Almost all the little problems that everybody has in daily life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when faced within a foreign culture.
The third stage of culture shock is called the “adjustment stage”.This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture.Your sense of humour usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place.Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!
The fourth stage can be called “adaptation stage”.Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.If you meet someone from your country who has just arrived, you can be the expert on life in the new culture and help them to deal with their culture shock.
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don't know about. This is called “reverse culture shock”.Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home.Life is a struggle!

3.A make sb.do结构变成被动必须加上不定式符号to。
4.A 此处carry on a conversation意为“进行对话”。keep on继续;go on继续;hold on坚持,不挂断。
so as to一般不置于句首。
6.A take advantage of表示“利用”。
get away脱身,逃离;外出度假;drop in顺便拜访;check out检查,核实;hold on坚持。根据but可知后面的wasn't able to________与前面的had hoped to take a holiday构成转折关系,故get away符合题意。
when completed是when it is completed的省略。
be connected with... 其他选项中介词的搭配有误,B、C两项中的to应改为with,D项中的with应改为to。
14.A tired of...
21.D 依据下文“This year there would be __32__ play!”
23.C play
24.D “but at once tense again”

35.B light up“点燃;照亮;容光焕发”。
文中提及了“Marco decided to join them for their next trip.”
由最后一段的最后一句“of course to know what kind of books to read is also important”暗示了下一段应该讲孩子应该读什么书。
第五段通过Michael Williams的现身说法,举例说明了参加户外生存训练课程的好处,他最后说“my favourite skills learned were sailing and rock climbing”。
56.another 57.Honeymoon 58.what/all/everything 59.homesick/lonely 60.danger 61.own 62.survived 63.helpful 64.unknown/unfamiliar 65.changes

When I was a child,I stayed with my grandmother a lot of the time while my mother was at work. One day some money problems started to appear for my grandmother and grandfather. They needed a little more income so she decided that she was going to sing at the nearby retirement home(养老院).
So I had to go with her.I wasn't sure about it at first, but as soon as my grandmother actually convinced me to get on stage and start singing,I loved it.I just loved seeing that sparkle in those people's eyes. They would stand up and dance and clap to the beat of the music. In the end,we were singing at many of the homes in the surrounding area 5 out of 7 days a week.
Ever since then, making other people happy has always made me happy. And during that experience I even discovered my gift for singing. My grandma still sings to those people 15 years later, only for no charge now.I moved to North Carolina when I was 13 leaving my grandmother in Florida, but I still carry on her effort and try and go out of my way to do something kind, even if very small, for at least one person every day. There is no better feeling in the world than the one you get when you hear appreciation in someone's voice.

There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother's body and was gone.Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.

In 1997,a group of twenty British women made history.Working in five teams with four women in each team, they walked to the North Pole.Apart from one experienced female guide, the other women were all ordinary people who had never done anything like this in their lives before. They managed to survive in an environment which had defeated several very experienced men during the same time period.
The women set off as soon as they were ready.Once on the ice, each woman had to ski along while dragging a sledge(雪橇)weighting over 50 kilos. This would not have been too bad on a smooth surface, but for long distances, the Arctic ice is pushed up into huge piles two or three meters high, and the sledges had to be pulled up one side and carefully let down the other so that they didn't become damaged. The temperature was always below the freezing point and sometimes strong winds made walking while pulling so much weight almost impossible. It was also very difficult for them to put up their tents when they stopped each night.
In such conditions, the women were making good progress if they covered fourteen or fifteen kilometers a day.But there was another problem.Part of the journey was across a frozen sea with moving water underneath the ice and at some points the team would drift back more than five kilometers during the night. That meant after walking in these very severe conditions for ten hours one day, they had to spend part of the next day covering the same ground again.Furthermore, each day it took three hours from waking up to setting off and another three hours every evening to set up the camp and prepare the evening meal.
So,how did they manage to succeed? They realized that they were part of a team.If any one of them didn't pull her sledge or get her job done, she would endanger the success of the whole expedition.Any form of selfishness could result in the efforts of everyone else being completely wasted,so personal feelings had to be put to one side.At the end of their journey, the women agreed that it was mental effort far more than physical fitness that got them to the North Pole.

When I first got an e-mail account ten years ago,I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues,Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail,I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all.If we want e-mail to continue to be useful,we need specific laws that make spamming(发送垃圾邮件)a crime.
If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much worse.Computer programmes allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products, individual e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails.Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?
This problem is troubling individuals and companies as well. Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company.Companies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other.Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively.Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are,in the end, passed on to the consumer.
For these reasons,I believe that lawmakers need to legislate(立法)against spam.Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people.E-mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.
