Rush hour traffic is a problem in many big cities around the world.Commuters(通勤者)rush to and from their jobs in cars, buses, subways, trains, and even on bicycles.Large cities in the United States have two rush hours-one in the morning and one in the evening. But in cities in other parts of the world, there are four rush hours. In Athens and Rome, for example, many workers go home for lunch and a nap. After this midday break, they rush back to their jobs and work for a few more hours.
In Tokyo, there's a big rush hour underground. Most of the people in Tokyo take the subways. The trains are very crowded.Subway employees called packers wear white gloves and help pack the commuters into the trains when the doors place. They make sure that all purses, briefcases, clothes, and hands are inside the trains.
In Seoul, many commuters prefer to take taxis to get to work,To hail_a_cab,many people stand at crossroads and raise two fingers. This means they'll pay the cab driver double the usual fare. Some people even raise three fingers! They'll pay THREE times the normal rate.
Streets in Rome are very crowded with automobiles and mopeds(摩托自行车)during rush hours. The city can't make its streets wider, and it can't build new highways, because it doesn't want to disturb many historic sites in the city, such as the Forum and the Colosseum. It took the city fifteen years to construct a new subway system.Construction had to stop every time workers found old artifacts and discovered places of interest to archaeologists(考古学家).
In many big cities, there are special lanes on highways for carpools. These are groups of three or more people who driver to and from work together. They share the costs of gas and parking and take turns driving into the city.
Getting to work and getting home can be difficult in many places around the world.Rush hour traffic seems to be a universal problem.

Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉)can cut highway crashes.Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75% using a simple optical illusion.Bent stripes, called chevrons(人字形),painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are,and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C.is planning to repeat Japan's success.Starting next year, the Foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.
Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the Foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the Foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards(危险)are the greatest-curves,exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can at first cut the average speed of drivers in half.
However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bar.
Chevrons, scientists say,not only give drives the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.
35.The passage mainly discusses ________.

Wildlife faces threats (威胁) from habitat destruction, pollution, and other human actions.Although protecting wildlife may seem too hard at times, even small actions in your own neighbourhood can help protect many different animals. Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions.

Fourteen-year-old Richie Hawley had spent five years studying violin at the Community School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles when he took part in a violin contest.Ninety two young people were invited to the contest and Hawley came out first.
The contest could have been the perfect setup for fear, worrying about mistakes, and trying to impress the judges. But Hawley says he did pretty well in staying calm.“I couldn't be thinking about how many mistakes I'd make-it would distract(干扰)me from playing,”he says.“I didn't even remember trying to impress people while I played. It's almost as if they weren't there.I just wanted to make music.”
Hawley is a winner. But he didn't become a winner by concentrating on winning. He did it by concentrating on playing well.
A characteristic of high performers is their intense, pleasurable concentration on work, rather than on their competitors or future glory or money, says Dr.Charles Garfield, who has studied 1,500 achievers in business, science, sports, the arts, and professions.“They are interested in winning, but they're most interested in self-development,testing their limits.”
One of the most surprising things about top performers is how many losses they've had and how much they've learned from each.“Not one of the 1,500 I studied defined losing as failing,”Garfield says.“They kept calling their losses‘setbacks’.”
A healthy attitude toward setbacks is essential to winning, experts agree.
“The worst thing you can do if you've had a setback is to let yourself get stuck in a prolonged depression. You should analyze carefully what went wrong, identify specific things you did right and give yourself credit for them.”Garfield believes that most people don't give themselves enough praise. He even suggests keeping a diary of all the positive things you've done on the way to a goal.
43.Hawley won the contest because ________.
A.he put all his mind to his performance
B.he cared much about the judges' feelings
C.he worried about making mistakes.
D.he paid close attention to the people around
44.High performers is that they tend to concentrate on ________.
A.glory B.wealth
C.pleasure D.work
45.The passage tells us that“praise”in times of trouble ________.
A.helps people deal with their disappointment
B.makes people forget their setbacks
C.makes people regret about their past
D.helps people realize their goals
46.It can be learned from the passage that top performers are not ________.
A.interested in winning
B.free of losses
C.accustomed to failures
D.concerned about setbacks

The opera house in Santa Fe,New Mexico,is one of the most beautiful in the United States. It is small and open, with one roof over the stage where singers perform and another roof over part of the audience. This opera house in the mountain is one of the best in the country, which may seem surprising because performances are only given during the seven weeks in summer, and because Santa Fe is a very small city.
One reason why the Santa Fe Opera is so good is that it attracts many excellent young singers. They all hope to sing in famous opera houses like Metropolitan in New York someday, and they work hard to become well-known during the summer. The musicians and directors are experts who come from the best orchestras(管弦乐队)and operas in the country during their vacations.
They enjoy working there because they like to live in Santa Fe,which is near both the mountains and the desert. It is very beautiful there in summer.
The state government of New Mexico advertises the Santa Fe Opera in newspapers all over the country, and a great many tourists come to New Mexico because of the opera.Still, most of the audience does come from Santa Fe and other nearby cities, and all the seats in the theater are sold for every show.
There is only one thing that some people do not like about the Santa Fe Opera, and that is the cold weather.Because the theater is open, performances cannot start before it gets dark at nine o'clock in the evening, and then the mountain air becomes very cool.Sometimes people complain about the cold air,but because the operas are good, these people come back again wearing warm coats.

A.a mountain city B.young musicians
C.an opera house D.the tourism in Santa Fe

A.it is only a very small place
B.it is between the mountain and desert

In many countries today, laws protect wildlife. In India, the need for such protection was realized centuries ago.
About 300 B.C.an Indian writer described forests that were somewhat like national parks today. The killing of beasts was carefully supervised (监视).Some animals were fully protected.Within the forest, nobody was allowed to cut wood for building, burn wood for fire, or catch animals for their fur.Animals that became dangerous to visitors were caught or killed outside the park so that other animals would not become uneasy.
The need for wildlife protection is greater now than ever before.About a thousand species of animals are in danger of extinction,_and the speed at which they are being destroyed has increased.Taking mammals (哺乳动物) for example, the speed of extinction was about one species every fifty years from A.D.1 to 1800, but now it is about one species every year.Everywhere, men are trying to solve the problem of protecting wildlife and caring for the rapid growth of the world's population.

China's giant panda shows the achievement of the international effort to save animals that are now in danger. In television programmes we often see pandas playing funny games.Children have panda toys and beautiful cards with pictures of lovely pandas in them. They often visit the giant pandas in the zoo on their holiday and have a good time there.
However, scientists are worried about the future of giant pandas. They know only about 1,000 giant pandas remain alive today. They think the giant panda will die out in 30 years if the present conditions are not improved.
It is reported that the giant pandas have a very low birthrate.About 115 pandas live in zoos and research centres mainly in China, but during the past ten years they produced only 34 young pandas that are still alive.Survival rate for giant pandas in the wild are probably the same or lower. There are several reasons for the low birthrate. The main reason is that male pandas can make love with females in a very short season, only a few days a year. When they do have babies, females often produce two pandas, but the mother is usually not able to care for both of them. The new-born pandas weigh only a few grams each. They are too weak to live without special care.In the zoo, scientists can help the mothers care for the young pandas, but those living in the wild do not get enough help.It is very difficult for mother pandas to bring up their young pandas.
Conditions for the giant pandas have been worse in recent years.Pandas in China continue to reduce in number. We know pandas live on bamboos. But sometimes all the bamboos in one area die.The pandas there have nothing to eat and die of hunger.
Giant pandas now live in thirteen separate protected areas in China.Several years ago the Chinese government and the International Wild Life Organization agreed on a project of protecting giant pandas in the wild.We hope it could be helpful.

Several months ago,CCTV broadcast a documentary(纪录片)film about criminals(罪犯).I remembered one criminal clearly:he had killed his girlfriend just because she wanted to leave him.The journalist asked him,“Do you regret killing your girlfriend?”“No.”“Why?”“It's useless to regret,”the man answered calmly.
The journalist was silent. At that moment,I felt very angry. This man had made such an unforgivable mistake but he still wouldn't say he was sorry.
Is regret really useless?
Of course, regret is an emotion linked to the past and this feeling cannot turn back the clock. But I think people who say regret is useless ignore(忽视)two points. One is that regret is useful for the future and to one's soul.Look up the word“regret”in a dictionary:there are many expressions, such as“repent(悔悟)”,“chagrin(悔恨)”and so on.All these are used to tell people not to make similar mistakes after they have realized their fault. If you don't regret, how can you repent? On the other hand, for those such as murderers, who have already lost their future, regret is still a bap-
tism(洗礼)for the soul.A murderer won't leave the world at peace with himself unless he understands what regret is.
I have no doubt that regret is a virtue.Just like a light in the darkness,it can offer people the ray of hope they need.No matter what you have done wrong, people will always respect you for showing regret and a willingness to correct your mistakes. In this way, regret is a special feeling.Correcting mistakes is better than complaining;it makes you feel good about yourself. So why not show some regret after doing something wrong?
5.The writer felt very angry because of ________.
A.the criminal's crime
B.the criminal's short answer
C.the criminal's not feeling sorry
D.the criminal's not knowing law
