A
Some unusual words describe how a person spends his or her time. For example, someone who likes to spend a lot of time sitting or lying down while watching television is sometimes called a couch potato. A couch is a piece of furniture that people sit on while watching television.
Robert Armstrong, an artist from California, developed the term “couch potato”in 1976.Several years later, he listed the term as a trademark with the United States government.Mr.Armstrong also helped write a funny book about life as a full-time television watcher. It is called the “Official Couch Potato Handbook”.
Couch potatoes enjoy watching television just as mouse potatoes enjoy working on computers.A computer mouse is the device that moves the pointer,or cursor, on a computer screen. The description of mouse potato became popular in 1993.American writer Alice Kahn is said to have invented the term to describe young people who spend a lot of time using computers.
Too much time inside the house using a computer or watching television can cause someone to get cabin fever.A cabin is a simple house usually built far away from the city.People go to a cabin to relax and enjoy quiet time.
Cabin fever is not really a disease. However, people can experience boredom and restlessness if they spend too much time inside their homes. This is especially true during the winter when it is too cold or snowy to do things outside.Often children get cabin fever if they cannot go outside to play.So do their parents. This happens when there is so much snow that schools and even offices and stores are closed.
Some people enjoy spending a lot of time in their homes to make them nice places to live. This is called nesting or cocooning.Birds build nests out of sticks to hold their eggs and baby birds. Some insects build cocoons around themselves for protection while they grow and change.Nests and cocoons provide security for wildlife. So people like the idea of nests and cocoons, too.
The terms cocooning and nesting became popular more than twenty years ago. They describe people buying their first homes and filling them with many things. These people then had children.
Now these children are grown-up and have left the nest. They are in college.Or they are married and starting families of their own far away. Now these parents are living alone without children in their empty nest. They have become empty nesters.
36.Which of the following was first used?
A.Couch potato. B.Cocooning.
C.Mouse potato. D.Nesting.
37.________refers to a person who spends much time on computer.
A.A couch potato B.A nester
C.A mouse potato D.An empty nester
38.Why can most people easily get cabin fever in winter?
A.Because they are addicted to computer games.
B.Because they would like to play outside.
C.Because it is so cold that they couldn't go outside.
D.Because they are too busy at work or school.
39.What's the passage mainly about?
A.How to get rid of cabin fever.
B.How people become nesters or empty nesters.
C.How to spend your leisure time.
D.The origin of some words.

(2013·陕西高考)About 30 years ago,I left Cuba for the United States with my son. After getting settled finally in Brunswick, New Jersey, I enrolled(注册) my son in kindergarten. Several weeks later,my son's teacher asked me to meet him at his office.
In the teacher's office, an exchange of greetings was followed by his questions: “Is your son mentally retarded (弱智的)? Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?”
Was he talking about my wonderful Scola? No, no, it can't be. What a helpless, lonely moment! I told him that Scola was a quiet, sweet little boy, instead. I asked him why he was asking me all these questions.
My son could not follow the teacher's directions, he told me, and thus, Scola was disrupting the class. Didn't he know my son did not speak English yet?
He was angry: “Why hasn't your son been taught to speak English? Don't you speak English at home?”
No,I didn't speak English at home, I replied. I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months, and I didn't want him to forget his native language. Well, wrong answer! What kind of person would not speak in English to her son at home and at all times? “Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country, never wanting to be a part of this society?”
Needless to say, I tried to tell him I was not one of “those people”. Then he told me the meeting was over, and I left.
As I had expected, my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over. He went on to graduate from college and got a job, earning close to six figures. He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted, contented life. And he has benefited from being bilingual(双语的).
Speaking more than one language allows people to communicate with others; it teaches people about other cultures and other places—something very basic and obviously lacking in the “educator” I met in New Jersey.
40.The teacher asked the author to his office________.

B.to get Scola enrolled in kindergarten
C.to find a language partner for Scola

So there you can on the phone, you ask a question, and suddenly there's silence. What is this, the phone's gone dead, the person you're talking to is dead?Possibly. But there could be another reason—the other person could be Finnish,or Japanese.
According to a handy new booklet from British Telecom(BT)for business people,in countries such as Britain and Italy “conversation is a form of entertainment. There is a continuous flow of talk...”.But in other countries especially Finland and Japan,“it is not only impolite to break in,but listeners will think over what has been said in silence.”
It also points out that English, when spoken by foreigners,it likely to include plenty of “false friends”,where word-for-word translation fails. If a Frenchman says something is “interesting”,he probably means it's profitable. If he“demands” something,he's actually just asking. If an American says your proposal is “quite good”,you should be pleased, because “quite”means “very”.But if he tells you to “table” a proposal, then things are not good at all.Whereas an English person would understand tabling a proposal as putting an idea forward,to an American it means shelves it.
According to the booklet British people are not “explicit” like the Americans, the Dutch, the Germans or the French.“If a Dutchman says an idea is interesting, he means that it is interesting. If an Englishman says it is interesting, you have to deduce (推论) from the way he says it whether he means it is a good or bad idea.”
The Japanese, the Russians and the Arabs on the other hand, live in the land of true diplomatic subtlety (微妙的). “If they say an idea is interesting, it may simply be out of politeness”.
It is safest to stick with plain speaking whenever possible,BT advises its British readers. And whatever you do,be careful to limit the use of the famous British sense of humor.

Since my retirement(退休)from teaching music in 2001,I have spent a good deal of time painting as an artist.I actually began drawing again in the summer of 1995 when my father died,so perhaps I was trying to recover from the loss of my father,or maybe it was just that it brought back memories of him.In any case,I drew pen and ink animals and landscapes(风景画)much influenced(影响)by Krenkel and St.John for five years.
For some strange reason,I had been waiting until my retirement to start doing watercolors again, but as soon as I walked out of the school door for the last time I picked up my brushes and rediscovered Andrew Wyeth, who quickly became my favorite artist.I had looked through all the art books I had on my shelves and found his watercolors to be the closest to how I thought good watercolors should look.So I painted landscapes around Minnesota for three years and tried out many other types of painting. However, watercolors remained my first choice, and I think I did my best work there, showing my paintings at a number of art exhibitions.
Art is now together with my piano playing and reading. There is a time for everything in my world, and it is wonderful to have some time doing what I want to do.As Confucius once said,“At seventy I can follow my heart's desire.”
52.What is the text mainly about?
A.Learning to paint in later life.

A.he hoped to draw a picture of his father

D.started his retirement life at the age of seventy
55.How does the author probably feel about his life as an artist?
A.Very enjoyable. B.A bit regretful.

resemble看起来像;so what?
evident“明显的,明白的”;apparent“显然的,显而易见的,明白易懂的”;absolute“绝对的,完全的”。
3.C keep sb.informed“告知某人”。
There is no point in doing sth.“干某事是没有意义的”。
sign up“跟……签合同”;hold up“阻滞,抢劫”;take up“占据,开始从事”;put up“搭起,张贴”。
on purpose“为了”,作状语;for the purpose of“为了……”。
10.A 表示“某人不在或缺席”时,用in one's absence或用时间状语从句when/while he is away/absent均可。
A项只能是agree to do;B项应为permit sb.to do;C项应为let sb.do。
A as well as B作主语时,遵循“就前原则”,也就是说谓语动词要和A保持一致。也可以理解为本句的主语是A而不是B,所以本题谓语动词的数要和the famous musician保持一致,用was invited。
A项which“哪一个”;B项where“哪儿”;C项how“怎样”;D项what“什么”。
16.C 接下来的such as your job or your studies是对填空部分的列举,据此可知答案为C项。
or perhaps或许。故选D项。
18.A 根据语境可知,所填词语与接下来的films or music并列,被of a different country修饰,films or music为文艺方面,故选A项。
have a knowledge of掌握,了解,熟知。
21.D 根据空格后的内容an environment where...
22.C someone who's good at the language对于学习者来说应是“指导”其学习,而不是“控制”、“命令”或“强迫”。under the guidance of在……
24.B 根据接下来的regularly...long...take years等词语可知,学习语言需要时间。
故选A项。
worry about担心,故选A项。hesitate about对……犹豫不决;think about考虑;quarrel about就……
when learning=when they are learning a language。
But with some work and devotion,you'll make progress.
35.A 用their指代主句中的some people。故选A项。
36.A 由第二段第一句“Robert Armstrong,an artist from California,developed the term‘couch potato’in 1976”知,couch potato是在1976年第一次被使用,因此A项正确。第三段第三句“The description of mouse potato became popular in 1993”告诉我们mouse potato在1993年才流行,倒数第二段告诉我们cocooning和nesting是20多年前才开始流行的。
37.C 由第三段第一句“Couch potatoes enjoy watching television just as mouse potatoes enjoy working on computers”可知答案。
38.C 由第五段第三句“This is especially true during the winter when it is too cold or snowy to do things outside”可知答案。
从文章第一段最后一句“Several weeks later,my son's teacher asked me to meet him at his office.”和第二段中老师问的两个问题“Is your son mentally retarded(弱智的)?Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?”
由前面的“My son could not follow the teacher's directions”可知作者的孩子听不懂老师的指示,因此“干扰”了课堂,所以该词的意思为“disturbing”。
从文章倒数第三段中的“Needless to say,I tried to tell him I was not one of ‘those people’,”和文章倒数第二段中的“And he has benefited from being bilingual(双语的).”
由第一段倒数第三句话...and that he'd be happy to lend it to her.
由第二段第二句“...she was floored to see her own name and address inside the cover.”
由文中第二段中间“at a concert back in Montreal,Emma had met a Californian”可知,其中要注意back in Montreal是定语后置,修饰a concert。
由文章倒数第三句“The man opened up a book he was carrying in his backpack...”
原文信息:“...so perhaps I was trying to recover from the loss of my father,or maybe it was just that it brought back memories of him.”
原文信息:“...rediscovered Andrew Wyeth,who quickly became my favorite artist.”
56.establishing/building/developing/forming
57.including 58.Suggestions 59.hesitation
60.aware 61.sure 62.avoid 63.regularly

Nowadays,with_the_development_of_the_Internet,there_came_a_kind_of_language_called_Web_language.Some people even speak Chinese mixed with English words. This is a phenomenon worth thinking about.
Some people think it kind of ridiculous. In their opinion,it makes no sense in helping people communicate or learn English.Besides,it will ruin the Chinese language. However, others, especially the youngsters, are fond of this way. They think it of special help in expressing themselves. What's more,it may make the language more versatile.
In my opinion.it's not a good practice to use the kind of language. It may be fashionable as some think, but you may also get your idea confusing, leaving the other person at a loss as to your meaning.Of course, the kind of Web language sometimes may be very expressive.

There is no clear advice on how to use your body language. What you do might be explained in several ways, depending on the surroundings and who you are talking to.You'll probably want to use body language differently when talking to your boss compared to when you talk to a girl you're interested in.The following are some effective ways to improve your body language.
First,to change your body language you must be aware of your body language.Notice how you sit,how you stand, how you use your hands and legs, and what you do while talking to someone. You might want to practice in front of a mirror. It might seem silly but no one is watching you. This will show you how you look to other people and also give you an opportunity to practice a bit before going out into the world.
Another tip is to close your eyes and visualize how you would stand and sit to feel confident, open and relaxed or whatever you want to communicate.See yourself move like that version of yourself. Then try it out.
You might also want to observe friends, role models, movie stars or other people you think who have good body language.Observe what they do and they don't and take bits and pieces you like from them.Try using what you can learn from them.
Some of these tips might seem you are pretending something. But pretend it till you make it a useful way to learn something new.And remember, feelings work backwards, too. If you smile a bit more you will feel happier. If you sit up straight you will feel more energetic and in control. If you slow down your movements you'll feel calmer.

Greeting Gesture-bowing is the traditional form for both greeting and departing.Western and Korean male friends usually greet with both a slight bow and shaking hands. When shaking hands, both hands are sometimes used.Women usually do not shake hands, especially with men,but usually just nod lightly. The senior person offers to shake hands first, but the junior person bows first.
Avoid hugging and kissing when greeting.Long direct eye contact is considered impolite. When saying good-bye,the traditional gesture is the bow.
Touching Gestures
Generally speaking, the Koreans are not a touching society. So avoid touching or any long form of body contact.
You seldom see public display of affection. On the other hand, you may note people of the same sex walking hand-in-hand,which is simply a gesture of friendship.Don't worry about a bit of pushing in stores or when groups board public buses or trains.Apologies are neither offered nor expected.
Beckoning Gestures
The open hand or the middle finger is used for pointing:To beckon (招手) someone, the palm (手掌) faces downward and the fingers are moved.Using the arm and hand up,with palm toward the face,is used only for calling dogs or children.
Other Gestures
Respect is always shown to elderly people,so it is common to stand up when a person, especially an elderly man enters the room. However,an elder may not give up a seat for a young boy.Men generally have priority (特权) in Korea:go through a door first, walk ahead of women, and women may help them with their coats.

The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare's time is estimated to have been about five million. Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms.
In fact, it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate working knowledge of English in addition to their own languages. The purpose for English learning and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms an adequate working knowledge for each situation.
The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its present day importance as a world language. Besides serving the infinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of the most important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers. It is a widely used for such purposes as meteorological(气象学的)and airport communications, international conferences, and the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and entrance to the scientific and technological developments in the West.

keep up保持;keep away from远离;go on with继续,with后接名词或名词性短语;keep on继续。

on the other hand另一方面,符合句意。in other words意为“换句话说”;for one thing意为“首先”;as a matter of fact意为“事实上”。
