Have you ever dreamed of visiting a planet in the Milky Way(银河系)?While the trip sounds exciting,it would take years to reach your destination. So in the future, bedtime for astronauts may be more than a few hours of regular shut-eye.They would have to sleep for years.
European researchers are now conducting hibernation experiments. The study may help them understand whether humans could ever sleep through the years it would take for a space flight to distant planets.“If there was an effective technology,it could make deep-space travel a reality,”said Mark Ayre of the European Space Agency last month.
What seems like a science fiction is not completely unlikely.Researchers have been able to use chemicals to put living cells into a sleep-like state where they don't age. They have now moved on to the small,non-hibernating mammals like rats.
A major challenge is the fact that cells can be very simple systems, whereas body organs are far more complex.“It's like moving from a simple Apple computer to a supercomputer,”said Marco Biggiogera,a hibernation researcher at University of Pavia in Italy.Just like bears and frogs, the hibernation of human beings would cause a person's metabolism(新陈代谢)to lower so they would need less energy.
Medical research, however,is just half of a space flight hibernation system. There is a challenge of designing a suitable proactive shelter.Such a shelter would provide the proper environment for hibernation, such as the proper temperature. It would also have to monitor life functions and serve the physiological needs of the hibernator.
According to Ayre, the six-person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission(使命)to Jupiter's moon(木星的卫星)Callisto could be an opportunity to use human hibernation. The mission aims to send six persons on a five-year flight to Callisto, where they will spend 30 days in 2045.

(2013·福建高考)Your glasses may someday replace your smartphone, and some New Yorkers are ready for the switch. Some in the city can't wait to try them on and use the maps and GPS that the futuristic eyewear is likely to include.
“I'd use it if I were hanging out with friends at 3 a.m. and going to the bar and wanted to see what was open,” said Walter Choo,40,of Fort Greene.
The smartphone-like glasses will likely come out this year and cost between $ 250 and $ 600,the Times said, possibly including a variation of augmented (增强的) reality,a technology already available on smartphones and tablets (平板电脑) that overlays information onto the screen about one's surroundings. So,for example,if you were walking down a street, indicators would pop_up showing you the nearest coffee shop or directions could be plotted out and come into view right on the sidewalk in front of you.
“As far as a mainstream consumer product, this just isn't something anybody needs,” said Sam Biddle, who writes for Gizmodo.com.“We're accustomed to having one thing in our pocket to do all these things,” he added,“and the average consumer isn't gonna be able to afford another device (装置) that's hundreds and hundreds of dollars.”
9to5Google publisher Seth Weintraub, who has been reporting on the smartphone-like glasses since late last year, said he is confident that this type of wearable device will eventually be as common as smartphones.
“It's just like smartphones 10 years ago,”Weintraub said.“A few people started getting emails on their phones, and people thought that was crazy.Same kind of thing. We see people bending their heads to look at their smartphones, and it's unnatural,”he said.“There's gonna be improvements to that, and this a step there.”
40.One of the possible functions of the smartphone-like glasses is to ________.
A.program the opening hours of a bar
B.supply you with a picture of the future
C.provide information about your surroundings
D.update the maps and GPS in your smartphones

C.available to people worldwide
D.expensive for average consumers
43.We can learn from the last two paragraphs that the smartphone-like glasses ________.
A.may have a potential market

Who would have thought that millions of people would buy a product containing living insects?A businessman named Milton Levine did.He created the Uncle Milton Ant Farm more than half a century ago.Today, grandchildren of the first ant colony owners are watching ants working hard on the farm.Milton Levine was not trained in the study of insects, also known as entomology. But he knew a lot about ants, and he designed an appealing way to share his knowledge.
Mr.Levine began his career as a maker of unusual toys after World War Ⅱ.He had returned to his birthplace in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after serving in the United States military. He got the idea for his future career from a business newsletter, which suggested that the best chances for jobs at the time were in toys.He decided to make toys. They understood that American society was about to change. The huge population increase known as the Baby Boom was beginning. There would be a huge demand for children's toys.
One day,he saw ants parading around a swimming pool. The sight made Mr.Levine remember how much he had liked watching ants as a boy on his uncle's farm. Those thoughts gave him the idea for the Uncle Milton Ant Farm.
Milton Levine developed a narrow, green plastic container. The top looked like a farm, showing a farmhouse,a barn,a bridge and a windmill(风车).Under those images was a divider that separated the ants' underground and above-ground areas.Under that was the sand where people could watch the ants digging passageways.
The first Uncle Milton Ant Farms were an immediate success. They were sold in 1956.Two years later, two million of the educational toys had been sold.
Through the years the toys continued to attract ant-watchers.People buy Uncle Milton Ant Farms from stores and order from websites.During his life,Mr.Levine saw the sale of more than twenty million of his ant colonies.
The Uncle Milton Ant Farm tells far more than how to care for the ants. For example, people receiving an Uncle Milton Ant Farm learn that the little insects are strong. Some can carry loads fifty times heavier than they are.A writer remembers owning an Uncle Milton Ant Farm when he was about five years old.He says he became very good at numbers by counting the ants.

If there is one thing I'm sure about,it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity.Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a newspaper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives-the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same.I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It's already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因)engineering. In the future,I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do-as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It's quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送)electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home.In fact,I'm pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体).They actually feed_off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn't happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound in the air.And as for the Internet,it's never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

B.newspapers will stay with us together with other media
C.television will take the place of newspaper
D.the writer believes some media will die out

A.depend on B.compete with

You are what you eat so maybe it's time you started eating sensibly.Experts at the first Chinese Students Nutrition and Health Festival in Kunming last week singled out(挑选)several bad eating habits.
●Watching television while having meals or snacks(零食).
Doing this means you don't pay attention to your food, forget how full you are,and so overeat. It can also cause digestion(消化)diseases. One way to avoid this is only to eat in certain areas of your home.
●Replacing meals with snacks.
Many students think that eating small snacks can help them diet. But it often results in overeating and health problems related to a lack of vegetables, carbohydrates(碳水化合物), proteins and vitamins.Snacking only works if it is well planned and includes healthy foods such as nuts, vegetables, fruit and yogurt.
●Having drinks rather than water.
Fizzy(起泡的)drinks and fruit juice are usually high in calories and sugar, which can cause weight problems.Water is important in making your brain cells and every organ in your body work properly. For your body to burn fat,it needs at least eight glasses of pure water a day.Liquids like soda and coffee actually take water away from your body.
●Choosing meat and certain vegetables over others.
Different foods provide different kinds of nutrition. If you don't have a balanced diet, this can result in malnutrition(营养失调)and a weaker body.
●Eating throat tablets(润喉片)as if they were sweets.
If you eat throat tablets when you have no throat disease, they may affect the bacteria(细菌)in your mouth and cause real throat problems.

49.D 细节理解题。由第一段中“people's constant voices”“the howling winds”“the fearful whimpers(呜咽声)of his little dog”和“the uncomfortable sounds of his mother”可判断,环境是嘈杂的,故选D项。
50.C 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“the uncomfortable sounds of his mother anxious in her room next door”和第三段中的“Troy rushed to Donald and sat anxiously on the edge of his bed.He did his best to calm his mother”可知,暴风雨来临之初,Troy(Donald的母亲)是忧虑和害怕的。
根据文章第二段“I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though.”可推知此题答案为C项。
54.B 细节理解题。根据文章第一段第三句“Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a newspaper only on Saturday or Sunday.”可推知此题答案为B项。
55.A 词义猜测题。作者上一句说人们错误地认为各种不同的媒体相互竞争,而下一句作者又说“They actually feed off each other.”(注意句中actually一词),再结合所给的四个选项,可知选A项合适。
56.habits 57.health 58.water 59.bacteria
60.Digestion 61.Weaker 62.Advice/Suggestions 63.Plan 64.Drink 65.necessary

Ⅳ.阅读理解
Japan is pretty serious about robotics(机器人技术).If the droids are going to fit in,they probably need to learn the Japanese custom of serving tea.
Fortunately, researchers at the University of Tokyo are exploring just that.In a show this week,a humanoid with camera eyes made by Kawada Industries Inc.poured tea from a bottle into a cup.
Then another robot on wheels delivered the cup of tea in an experimental room that has sensors embedded in the floor and sofa as well as cameras on the ceiling to simulate life with robot technology.
“A human being may be faster, but you'd have to say ‘Thank you’,”said Professor Tomomasa Sato from the University of Tokyo.“That's the best part about a robot. You don't have to feel bad about asking it to do things.”
Sato believes Japan,a rapidly aging society where more than a fifth of the population is 65 or older, will lead the world in designing robots to care for the elder, sick and bedridden.
Already, monitoring technologies, such as sensors that automatically turn on lights when people enter a room, are becoming widespread in Japan.
The walking,child-size Asimo from Honda Motor Co.greets people at showrooms.NEC Corp.has developed a smaller companion robot-on-wheels called Papero.A seal robot available since 2004 can entertain the elderly and others in need of fuzzy companionship.
Sato says his experimental room is raising awareness about privacy questions that may arise when electronic devices monitor a person's movements down to the smallest detail.
On the bright side, the tea-pouring humanoid has been programmed to do the dishes.

Scientists have created a “human-like robot”that can dance and do the housework.
“Mahru”has been developed to imitate humans and can move its lips, eyebrows and pupils(瞳孔).The machine can also move its upper and lower body freely and automatically(自动地)stop itself when walking.
In addition,it has been programmed to give out two kinds of pleasant smells to match its emotions. The 1.5m tall robot was produced by researchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and is the first South Korean-developed machine of its kind.
“‘Mahru’ will open the way for the commercial use of humanoid robots doing housework,”You Bum-Jae,leader of the development research team, said,“‘Mahru’ can dance while walking on its legs and is able to work in place of a human.”
